ATLANTIC CITY (Jan. 21, 2017) – In a stunningly one-sided affair, Danny “Baby Face Assassin” Roman scored an upset ninth-round TKO over previously unbeaten Arama Lopez in a WBA Super Bantamweight Title Eliminator Rāmere i roto i te hui matua o ShoBox: Ko te Generation New on SHOWTIME from Bally’s Atlantic City Hotel and Casino.

 

Lopez’s trainer, renowned Ronnie Shields, decided his boxer shouldn’t take any more punishment and asked the referee to stop the contest after nine completed rounds.

It’s a bittersweet for us, for Lopez. We know him well. It’s going to take a while for him to come back.”

 

In the final three rounds, Roman out-landed Lopez 107-27, a 84-20 in power punches. In the final session, Roman landed more punches (43) than Lopez threw. It was a merciless beating followed by a merciful stoppage. Roman landed 54 ōrau o ngā tītere mana, whai wāhi 67 percent in the final round.

“Adam Lopez is a great and tough fighter,” said Roman. “He came prepared, but I came out with the victory.

“I started hurting him with uppercuts. I dropped him twice the fourth. I felt I was going to stop him there, but the bell saved him.

“My plan was to break him down little by little, and I felt that was starting to take effect as he was losing his steam in the third round, but he kept on going.

“I knew he would have one last stand, but I knew I would stop him. Even if they didn’t stop it in the corner, I knew I would get him out of there.

"Na, I am going to go back to the gym. I have to start working on the basics again and begin to prepare for my title shot. I’m very excited.”

Lopez, who left the ring promptly after the stoppage, was not happy with his performance.

“He was the better man te po nei,” he said as he sat with his head down in the locker room. “I kept trying to catch him with uppercuts and I got caught every time. I was trying to get on the inside, but it was hard.

“I thought I was clawing my way back into the fight, but my eye started hurting. It was the first uppercut that knocked me down in the fourth that got me right in the eye. It was hard to keep on going with my eye like that.

“When I got back to the corner after the ninth round, Ronnie told me he had seen enough and he stopped the fight.”

In the co-main event of the evening, undefeated super middleweight Ronald “Flatline” Ellis took a unanimous eight-round decision in a messy-grappler-type affair overChristopher “Ice Cold” Brooker i nga tatau o te 79-73 rua me te 77-75.

“Ellis-Brooker was an ugly fight,'' Na ka mea a Farhood. “Brooker didn’t really have any answers. Ellis won clearly but he didn’t shine, mostly because of his opponent’s style.”

 

Ellis (14-0-1, 10 Koó), o Lynn, Mass., established the tone of the fight with an explosive first round in which he went 27-of-90 overall—both high totals for the fight—to Brooker’s 8-of-45. Ellis won the body shots battle (64 ki 31) and landed sharper combinations during the rare moments the fighters were at distance.

In the final three rounds, Ellis continued applying pressure with accuracy.

“I am back and I want some more,” said Ellis. “That was a good fight. I fought smarter today than in my last ShoBox ahua. I’m not going to lie, he was tough and came at me very hard, but I maneuvered. Ko ahau rawa hari ki toku mahi.

 

“He was big and strong and was holding a lot, but my boxing skills took over in the fight. He was trying to get on my nerves, but I knew that my skills would get me the win.”

 

Brooker (11-3, 5 Koó), who was very unhappy with the judges’ scorecards said, “I don’t know what these judges are looking at. I had the better ring generalship, aggressiveness and I brought all the pressure.

 

“I feel that because he was undefeated, the judges must have put him on a pedestal. Even though I have a couple losses, look who I have fought and defeated. I am an elite-level fighter as well, and I should get that same respect. That’s why SHOWTIME has me on.

 

“At the end of the day, I just fight. It is up to fans who watch, they are the real judges for me.”

In the telecast opener, tūturu super Kōmāmā Kenneth “Bossman” Sims Jr. ringa Emmanuel “Renegade” Robles the second loss of his career in a closer than the scorecards reflected eight-round unanimous decision. It was scored 79-72 rua me te 78-73.

“Kenneth Sims Jr. is the typical ShoBox amanaki,'' Na ka mea a Farhood. “He showed a lot of good skills. He fought a different fight than the one we expected. He was more aggressive than we thought he’d be. With his amateur background and now the exposure on TV, I think he is a potential star.”

 

Sims (11-0, 3 Koó), o Chicago, Mate., who went past the sixth round for the first time in his career, began the fight with an overwhelming high-volume attack highlighted by vicious body shots.

Robles (15-2-1, 5 Koó), o San Diego, Calif., Heoi, picked up the pace and took advantage of Sims slowing his pace in rounds four through six. Robles upped his work rate and out-landed Sims 78-66 whānui. Referee Bengy Estives took a point way from Sims in round six for dropping his mouthpiece.

Sims gritted his teeth and caught his second wind in the seventh and eighth by out-landing Robles 49-34 overall and 46-24 power to grab a wider-than-expected decision.

“I didn’t have my best performance, but I still got the win,” Sims said. “I was trying too hard for a knockout, and that’s not me. He was a durable opponent, but my performance had nothing to do with that.

“I want to talk to my team about my next fight. My speed and feet were the difference in the fight, but I did not use them as much as I should.”

Robles, who was disappointed with the verdict, acknowledged Sims’ speed.

“He was moving a lot and I couldn’t neutralize that,’’ Robles said. “He was slicker than I thought he was going to be. I was putting on a lot of pressure and wanted to work the body, but he was slick and able to withstand what I was doing.

“I just have to get back to training and get better. You’ll see more of me. I will be back.”

NEW YORK (Jan. 9, 2017) – The previously announced matchup between undefeated WBA ranked No 3-ranked super bantamweight Arama Lopez and the WBA’s No. 4-runga Danny Roman has been elevated to a 12-round title eliminator for the WBA (te wā) Super Bantamweight belt held by Nehomar Cermeno.

 

Lopez (16-0-1, 8 Koó) and Roman (20-2-1, 7 Koó) will square off in the most significant fight of their careers in the main event of a ShoBox: Ko te Generation New quadrupleheader i runga i Rāmere, Jan. 20, ora i runga i SHOWTIME (10 p.m. AND/PT, roa i runga i te Tai Te Hau-ā-uru) i Bally’s Atlantic City Hotel and Casino.

Claggett, fighting out of Calgary, Canada, dropped down one weight class. Coming off a disputed 10-round decision loss to Chris van Heerden this past April, also at the Downtown Las Vegas Event Center, Claggett won a 10-round majority decision (98-92, 98-92, 94-96)te po nei for the vacant North American Boxing Association (NABA) welterweight title. His expert body work allowed him to dictate the pace of the boxing match.
“This is a long time coming, Claggett admitted. “I took the loss (vs. van Heerden) in stride, vowing to go back to the gym and make changes. I went down to 140 (lbs.) and it was the right decision. Au kaha. I I really worked hard.
“I landed a couple of shots that hurt him noticeably. Te uaua ia. Robles is a champion in the making. I ahau i te rota o te faatura no ia. Ko toku ora tenei. Te reira (his loss to van Heerden) fueled me. The fire’s back in me. I love fighting in Las Vegas.”
Neeco “The Rooster” Macias (L) stole the show to became a rising star
The co-feature showcased a pair undefeated junior middleweights and from the opening bell it was a real firefight. Macias forced Rolando “Rola” Garza (9-1, 6 Koó), a 3-time Mexican National amateur champion, to fight his fight. Macia’s aggressive style, always coming forward, throwing punches from every conceivable angle, ruled the coop. Garza got caught up in the action and paid for it, although the score after was 39-37, 39-37 for Macias, 39-37 for Garza, entering the fifth and final round. Macia’s constant pressure controlled the action, wearing down Garza, and paid dividends as he dropped Garza in the fifth. Kaitautoko Jay Nady had seen enough, halting the fight at that point as much due to the damage Garza had suffered in the first four rounds as the knockdown.
A rising star was born in Macia, who captured the vacant World Boxing Association (WBC) United States junior middleweight championship. “It’s conditioning, a lot of work,” Macias explained the reason for his non-stop action before crowing loudly in the ring. “I stuck to the game plan. I knew he’d come to fight with a lot of skill to out-box me and get points. My game plan was throw a lot of upper cuts and punches from every angle. It was all about throwing combinations.
“He had a lot pf power, so I used defense to block punches. In the last round, I put punches together. I think the fight was stopped a little early and he could have kept going, but I didn’t see what he saw, and the referee was looking out for the fighters so we can fight another day.”
Jeremy Nichols remained undefeated
In the television opener, flashy Las Vegas welterweight Jeremy “J-Flash” Nichols (6-0, 2 Koó) kept rolling, winning a 4-round unanimous decision over Steve Belmontes (2-1, O KOs). Nichols outworked his opponent, consistently beating Belmontes to the punch with his superior quickness.
“I think it could have been a little flashier,” Nichols admitted. “But give it up to my opponent, he came to fight. With more than 100 runaruna whawhai, he could take a punch but he kept coming. My goal was to take everything from him and make him fight my fight. His hands were a little slower and he took a lot of good body shots and counters.”
Marina Ramirez (R) was a crowd pleaser
Idaho junior flyweight Marina “Rocky” Ramirez (40-36, 40-36, 40-36) pitched a 4-round shutout, hinga Rachel “The Black Widow” Sazoff (0-2) e tatau o 40-36 puta noa i te poari. “I landed a lot of shots,” Ramirez noted. “I respect her, she was tough. The game plan worked and we got the win.”

Twenty-year-old Randy Moreno (4-0, 3 Koó) turned in the best performance of his young career, stopping Australian junior lightweight “12” Gaige Ireland (2-1-2, 2 Koó) i roto i te toru o tawhio. Moreno fights with the poise of a much older fighter, effectively counter punching from the opening bell. “Mana'o te reira nui,” Moreno commented. “I wouldn’t be here today if it wasn’t forGil Martinez (upoko kaiwhakangungu). He is notorious for his training methods and it’s paid off. I’ve been with him 10 tau. Fighting here at home means the world to me.”

Tūturu amanaki Kōmāmā Ismail “Sharp Shooter” Muwendo, fighting out of Minneapolis by way of his native Uganda, pai ake ki 18-0 (12 Koó), taking a one-sided six-round unanimous decision from Eliseo Cruz (9-2-1, 6 Koó). “I think I did well, I was out of the ring a long time,” Muwendo commented. He’s a tough guy who was ready.”
Max Ornelas (R) opened the show in grand style
Las Vegas favorite Max “Baby Face Assassin” Ornelas (4-0, 2 Koó) remained unbeaten by way of a 4-round unanimous decision over Honatana “Johnny Boy” Quiorz (6-5, 1 KO). “I was confident (of winning the decision,” the 18-year-old Ornelas said. “I was out-boxing him. I love fighting here. I have a lot of support from family and friends; I’m motivated when I hear them.”

The 10-round main event pits unbeaten junior welterweights Emmanuel “Renegade” Robles (15-1-1, 5 Koó) a Steve “The Dragon” Claggett(23-4-1, 16 Koó),promoted in association with Bobby D Presents, for the vacant North American Boxing Association (NABA) – United States junior welterweight championship.
Garza and Macias (12-0, 6 Koó), who will be fighting for the vacant WBC – US junior middleweight championship, are exact opposites in and out of the ring. The winner will advance to the next level of competition in the 154-pound division.
A technically sound boxer, Garza had an extensive amateur background as a member of the Mexican National Team, finishing with a 120-12 record, before turning pro September 29, 2012. The quiet, unassuming fighter 24-year-old was impressive in his last fight, also at the DLVEC this past Pipiri 10, in which he dominated previously unbeaten Erasmo Garcia (5-0-1) on his way to an 6-round unanimous decision (59-54, 59-54, 58-56) wikitoria.

In the other corner, the non-stop Macias relies on conditioning and an aggressive, always coming forward approach to break down his opponent. The 25-year-old Macias, fighting out of Palm Desert, California, unlike Garza, who now lives and trains in Austin (TX), had only 30 amateur bouts having started boxing at the relative advanced age of 21. He did win gold medals at the National Blue & Gold Tournament, as well as Central California Golden Gloves and Desert Showdown. Macias is a showman, playing to the crowd before, during and after fights, crowing like a rooster, always with a broad smile on his face.

Macias’ last fight, also at the DLVE this past April 16, resulted in an action-packed fight against Limberth Ponce(10-2). Never tasking his foot off the pedal, Macias rolled to a win by 8-round unanimous decision (79-73 X 3), earning him a legion of new fans who were in attendance or watched the fight on CBS Sports Network.

“Fighters don’t really care who they fight, they just want to fight,” Macias explained why his risking his undefeated record against an opponent who has never loss. “I had a fight fall through so, instead of waiting for another fight, when the opportunity to fight a 9-0 guy came, my coaches watched film of him and we agreed that I’m ready. This is the first time I’m fighting on the ‘B’ side, but we’re using that as motivation. I take one fight at a time but I know I’m fighting on TV and need to look good. I want to show everyone that all the hard work has paid off.
“I see this fight as my opponent probably having more skill, he’s technically sound and sets up his shots. But our plan is to take him out of his game plan, wear him down and have some fun doing it. My last fight was my first in Las Vegas and first time fighting on national television. It got a lot of notice. I’ve been through all of that now and will be even better prepared for this fight. The 28-year-old Robles is a former WBC Latino super lightweight champion, as well as a 2008 National PAL gold medalist. The gifted southpaw has reeled-off 11consecutive victories since his 2012 draw with 7-0 Adrian Vargas. NABA No. 1 contender Robles’ signature win to date was last year’s second-round stoppage of Leon Spinks III, grandson of former heavyweight champion and Olympic gold medalist Leon Spinks, who left the ring on a stretcher. Claggett, 27, is coming off of a disputed 10-round majority decision loss to Chris Van Heerden (23-2-1) last April at the DLVEC. Fighting out of Calgary, Alberta, Claggett is dropping down one weight class in order to challenge junior welterweight Robles for the vacant NABA – United States title.

In a rare battle of unbeaten prospects, Roland “Rola” Garza (9-0, 6 Koó) meets popular California junior middleweight Neeco “The Rooster” Macias (12-0, 6 Koó) in the 8-round co-feature.
Garza, 24, was an outstanding amateur boxer in Mexico, where he compiled a 120-12 record, earning a spot on the Mexican National Team. Tenei Pipiri mua, Garza won a thrilling 6-round decision over previously unbeaten Erasmo Garcia (5-0-1) at the DLVEC.

The always entertaining Macias, 25, who crows like a rooster in the ring before and after fights, had fans on their feet in his last fight, which was a non-stop brawl at the DLVEC with Limberth Ponce this past April, ending in a unanimous 8-round decision for Macias.
