J Russell Peltz reflects on his favorite fights in Atlantic City

ATLANTIC CITY – Pebrero 20, 2018 – Boxing in Atlantic City has been prevalent for more than 45 taon. One man who has been in the center of a lot of the action on the boardwalk has been International Boxing and Atlantic City Boxing Hall-of-Fame promoter and matchmaker J Russell Peltz.

The Philadelphia legend, who has promoted scores of cards in the shore town, is making matches for the Pebrero 24 card at The Showboat Hotel that will feature Thomas “Cornflake” LaManna vs. Gabriel “Tito” Bracero in a 10-round battle for the WBC Fecarbox Welterweight championship.

“I did my first fight in 1973,” said Peltz, who has run shows in just about every property in Atlantic City.

It is only fitting that Peltz is the matchmaker with promoter Rising Star Promotions in the South Jersey based promotional outfit’s effort to bring Atlantic City back to prominence as the the premier fight destination on the East Coast.

Peltz is hoping LaManna-Bracero is added to the memorable bouts that Peltz has been involved in Atlantic City:

1. Agosto 31, 1981 at The Sands Hotel–Frank Fletcher vs Ernie Singletary.(PRISM)

“The fight was televised by local cable channel PRISM (Jim Barniak and Bob Wright, both deceased, did the commentary) and it was for Fletcher’s USBA middleweight title.

“This was the most brutal fight I ever saw, even more brutal than Matthew Saad Muhammad-Marvin Johnson I. This was a closet classic since few saw it on PRISM. The fight was toe-to-toe for seven rounds, no knockdowns, until ringside doctor stopped it between the seventh and eighth round. They could have fought this one in a phone booth.

“Singletary was taken to hospital after fight.

“Mamaya, when we couldn’t find Fletcher, we broke into his hotel room, and he was out cold on the floor. We couldn’t get an ambulance so we (Marty Feldman and I) put him in the back of a police wagon and rode with him to the hospital where the doctor told us if we hadn’t found him he would have been dead.

“Singletary kept saying in the pre-fight buildup that no 12-2 TV fighter was gonna beat him. This was a reference to Fletcher getting into the first ESPN tournament and winning while Singletary had been plying his trade for years (24-2 pagkatapos) and never got that kind of exposure, just on PRISM. Talaga, Fletcher already had been on NBC once, beating Norberto Sabater.”

2. Setyembre 9, 1980 from Resorts–Mike Rossman vs. Al Bolden (PRISM)

“Ex-WBA light-heavyweight Rossman was getting beat up every round for 8 1/2 rounds against Al Bolden, of Pittsburgh, PA, and finally found a little light late in round 9 and came on to knock Bolden out at 2:32 of the 10th round and salvage the win. Bolden took the second knockdown in the 10th on his knees.”

3. Marso 13, 1983 from Resorts–Jeff Chandler – Gaby Canizalez (Simulain)

“Jeff Chandler, in the most brilliant performance of his Hall-of-Fame career out-boxed, out-punched and out-muscled future champion Gaby Canizales, of Texas, sa ibabaw 15 rounds to defend his WBA bantamweight title for the seventh time by unanimous decision. No one thought he could stand up under Canizales’ body attack but it was Chandler’s body and head attack that kept Canizales at bay for the entire fight. Just magnificent.”

4. Marso 2, 1985 from the Sands Hotel–Gary Hinton vs Aaron Pryor (Simulain)

“Unknown lefty Gary Hinton gave IBF 140 pound world champ Aaron Pryor all he could handle, but a 14th-round knockdown helped Pryor gain a 15-round split decision with Sylvester Stallone in attendance. He was our partner at the time with Pryor. It was Pryor’s last successful title defense.”

5. Nobyembre 19, 2011 from Ballys–Garrett Wilson vs. Chuck Mussachio

“Moving from light heavyweight to cruiserweight, Mussachio appeared to have out-boxed Wilson for 11 rounds in their USBA cruiserweight title fight, but Wilson drilled Mussachhio with a monstrous overhand right 41 seconds into the 12th round for the knockout win.”

JARON “BOOTS” ENNIS STOPS ROBERT HILL FOR THIRTEENTH VICTORY

Piladelpya – Hunyo 27, 2017 – Victory Boxing Promotions’ most talked-about prospect, Jaron “Boots” Ennis, has much to celebrate for his 20th birthday today. The Philadelphia welterweight secured his 13th win at the Durham Armory in North Carolina last Thursday, besting Robert Hill over three rounds.

Burol, a veteran of forty fights, came to Durham just one fight removed from an impressive upset victory over the Dominican Republic’s Eudy Bernardo (21-2, 15KO). After three rounds that included Ennis’ trademark punishment to the body, Hill’s corner declined to send him back into the ring for the fourth round, handing Ennis his 13th victory, and his 11th by stoppage.

“I only got hit one time during the fight,” said Ennis. “I went in there, and had fun like I always do. He backed up the whole time. When I first came, I was touching him to the body a lot, and that slowed him down. He didn’t come out for the fourth round.”

Ennis returns to the ring in the co-main event August 12th at Nations Fight Night at the historic Howard Theatre in Washington DC. Ennis will be the co-feature in what will be his first eight-round bout. “I’m thankful to have been so busy since my debut,” said Ennis. “It keeps me sharp, and I’m excited for my first eight rounder. I’m ready to show more of my talent, and the results of my hard work.”

LaManna sealed the deal in the final round when he landed a flush 4-punch combination that put Velasquez on the canvas.

Anthony Young won a eight-round unanimous decision over George Sosa in an entertaining welterweight contest.
Young was extremely active as he landed hard combinations with Sosa landing an occasional hard shot to the head.

Dan Pasciolla and LeMarcus Tucker battled to a majority draw in a rematch of Heavyweights.

In round one, Pasciolla began to bleed from his nostrils.

Pasciolla took a card 58-56. That was overruled by 57-57 score.

Pasciolla of Brick, NJ ay 9-2-3. Tucker of Batesville, ARK is 4-2-1.

Pham believes he will only get better as his trainer, Chuck Eisenbeis will be back in his corner after being absent from Pham’s last couple of bouts.
“It is good to have him back. He taught me everything that I know,” said Pham. “We have been working on footwork, and my jab. I have seen the improvement everyday. Chuck has been working with some UFC fighters and it is great to have him back.”
In Perez he is taking on a durable fighter, who has faced many top prospects, 13 undefeated fighters and a world champion in Jermall Charlo.
“He is a Puerto Rican. I know he is tough as I am Puerto Rican as well. Siya ay may 27 fights, so that is three-times more than I have. He is experienced and he goes rounds for the most part. I have seen some film where can be slick, so I have to be cautious of that. I have been working hard, so I am confident that I will get the job done.”
With a win, Pham can see himself getting into contention for some regional title opportunities.
“A win will set me up for a step up fight. I will discuss that with my manager after this fight. I am happy where I am at as this will be the 3rd fight this year for me and this is by far the busiest stretch of my career. I am looking to impress the fans and keep doubling the expectations with each fight. This will be a top-shelf performance. I want to stop this guy. I don’t go in looking for it, but if I see that I have him staggered or hurt, I will try to get him out of there.”

Atlantic City, NJ (Hunyo 6, 2017)–Popular native son, welterweyt Anthony “Juice” Bata will look for his 6th consecutive win when he battles hard-hitting George Sosa in the eight-round co-feature ito Sabado night at The Claridge Hotel in Atlantic City.

Young of Atlantic City has a record of 16-2 with six knockouts has won five in a row was given the task of fighting Sosa on two weeks notice. Young was training for an all-New Jersey showdown with Juan “Ang hayop” Rodriguez, JR. but Rodriguez had to pull out due to an injury.
“My camp has been great. Sosa is a late-replacement, but that really does not matter, because I was preparing for whoever,”sinabi ng 29 year-old Young.
Young knows that Sosa is a big puncher, but feels he is a different fighter outside of his home-country of the Dominican Republic.
“Sosa has 15 panalo, and I know he has all of his victories by knockout. But he was matched lightly when he fought in the Dominican Republic. It doesn’t matter what he will bring, because I have been preparing for him like he is Floyd Mayweather.”
Young has been preparing in New Jersey under the tutelage of trainer, Raul “Chino” Rivas. Young is in a camp that includes recent world champion Jason Sosa, top contender Tevin Farmer and lightweight contender Michael Perez among others, and Young feels that the switch of trainers, which mirrors this win streak is no coincidence.
“Chino has fixed a lot of my bad habits. He has me working on the jab, pivoting, and working the body. Since moving to Chino, I have improved with every fight.”
This will be the 10th appearance on the Boardwalk for Young, and he will look to his mark to 9-1 sa Atlantic City (Young is 2-0 at The Claridge).

Sosa of New Jersey has a record of 15-8 with all 15 wins coming via knockout.
Ang 30 year-old Sosa is a six-year professional, who began his career in the Dominican Republic with six consecutive knockouts.
Sosa’s losses have come to fighters who had a combined record of 87-7-1 and they included Three undefeated fighters plus contenders Ray Robinson and Ed Peredes.
Sosa has won two consecutive bouts by knockout as in his most recent effort he stopped Jesus Pascual in three rounds on October 29, 2016 in the Domincan Republic.

LaManna ng Millville, New Jersey will compete in a bout scheduled for eight-rounds.
