J Russell Peltz reflects on his favorite fights in Atlantic City

Peltz is the matchmaker for Pebrero 24 card at The Showboat Hotel featuring Thomas LaManna and Gabriel Bracero

ATLANTIC CITY – Pebrero 20, 2018Boxing in Atlantic City has been prevalent for more than 45 taon. One man who has been in the center of a lot of the action on the boardwalk has been International Boxing and Atlantic City Boxing Hall-of-Fame promoter and matchmaker J Russell Peltz.

The Philadelphia legend, who has promoted scores of cards in the shore town, is making matches for the Pebrero 24 card at The Showboat Hotel that will feature Thomas “Cornflake” LaManna vs. Gabriel “Tito” Bracero in a 10-round battle for the WBC Fecarbox Welterweight championship.

I did my first fight in 1973,said Peltz, who has run shows in just about every property in Atlantic City.

It is only fitting that Peltz is the matchmaker with promoter Rising Star Promotions in the South Jersey based promotional outfit’s effort to bring Atlantic City back to prominence as the the premier fight destination on the East Coast.

Peltz is hoping LaManna-Bracero is added to the memorable bouts that Peltz has been involved in Atlantic City:

1. Agosto 31, 1981 at The Sands HotelFrank Fletcher vs Ernie Singletary.(PRISM)

The fight was televised by local cable channel PRISM (Jim Barniak and Bob Wright, both deceased, did the commentary) and it was for Fletcher’s USBA middleweight title.

This was the most brutal fight I ever saw, even more brutal than Matthew Saad Muhammad-Marvin Johnson I. This was a closet classic since few saw it on PRISM. The fight was toe-to-toe for seven rounds, no knockdowns, until ringside doctor stopped it between the seventh and eighth round. They could have fought this one in a phone booth.

Singletary was taken to hospital after fight.

“Mamaya, when we couldn’t find Fletcher, we broke into his hotel room, and he was out cold on the floor. We couldn’t get an ambulance so we (Marty Feldman and I) put him in the back of a police wagon and rode with him to the hospital where the doctor told us if we hadn’t found him he would have been dead.

Singletary kept saying in the pre-fight buildup that no 12-2 TV fighter was gonna beat him. This was a reference to Fletcher getting into the first ESPN tournament and winning while Singletary had been plying his trade for years (24-2 pagkatapos) and never got that kind of exposure, just on PRISM. Talaga, Fletcher already had been on NBC once, beating Norberto Sabater.

2. Setyembre 9, 1980 from ResortsMike Rossman vs. Al Bolden (PRISM)

Ex-WBA light-heavyweight Rossman was getting beat up every round for 8 1/2 rounds against Al Bolden, of Pittsburgh, PA, and finally found a little light late in round 9 and came on to knock Bolden out at 2:32 of the 10th round and salvage the win. Bolden took the second knockdown in the 10th on his knees.

3. Marso 13, 1983 from ResortsJeff ChandlerGaby Canizalez (Simulain)

Jeff Chandler, in the most brilliant performance of his Hall-of-Fame career out-boxed, out-punched and out-muscled future champion Gaby Canizales, of Texas, sa ibabaw 15 rounds to defend his WBA bantamweight title for the seventh time by unanimous decision. No one thought he could stand up under Canizalesbody attack but it was Chandler’s body and head attack that kept Canizales at bay for the entire fight. Just magnificent.

4. Marso 2, 1985 from the Sands HotelGary Hinton vs Aaron Pryor (Simulain)

Unknown lefty Gary Hinton gave IBF 140 pound world champ Aaron Pryor all he could handle, but a 14th-round knockdown helped Pryor gain a 15-round split decision with Sylvester Stallone in attendance. He was our partner at the time with Pryor. It was Pryor’s last successful title defense.

5. Nobyembre 19, 2011 from BallysGarrett Wilson vs. Chuck Mussachio

Moving from light heavyweight to cruiserweight, Mussachio appeared to have out-boxed Wilson for 11 rounds in their USBA cruiserweight title fight, but Wilson drilled Mussachhio with a monstrous overhand right 41 seconds into the 12th round for the knockout win.

Besides LaManna vs. Bracero, a terrific undercard has been assembled featuring undefeated fighters: light-heavyweight Frederick Julan (8-0, 6 Kos), ng Brooklyn, NY; super middleweight Darren Goodall (5-0, 4 Kos), of New Milford, NJ; middleweight Omar Kabary Salem (1-0), ng Brooklyn, NY; super lightweight Jahmal Dyer (4-0, 2 Kos), ng Baltimore, MD.

Atlantic City, NJ (Hunyo 8, 2017)–Welterweight contender, Thomas “Cornflake” LaManna feels that he is on the brink of a breakthrough win, and he is looking to fight a big name later this Summer that will help catapult himself up the rankings, and on his way to a world title shot.
Ito Sabado gabi sa The Claridge Hotel sa Atlantic City, he first must get through 54-fight veteran Carlos Winston Velasquez in the eight-round main event of a card promoted by Rising Promotions.
LaManna, 22-2 with nine knockouts of Millville, New Jersey, will be looking for his 2nd consecutive win, and a win over Velasquez would set up a coveted fight with highly thought of foe.
I am looking forward to a great fight on Saturday. I am not taking Velasquez lightly as he is a tough veteran who has had 54 fights,” Sinabi LaManna. “After I win, I want something big. Myself and Rising Promotions have regional title bouts in mind. Fights with Zab Judah and Kermit Cintron have been brought up. The ultimate goal is to get world rated, and climb up the ladder with meaningful fights that I would like to take place in Atlantic City.
Because I have two losses, I get calls all the time to be an opponent. I don’t look at myself as being one. I am one of the biggest, if not the biggest tickets seller in New Jersey, with a tremendous fan base, and myself and my Rising Promotions team would like to capitalize on that and move me along like a real promotional company is supposed to move a fighter. Atlantic City is a great fight town, and I think that we can bring the type of bouts back to the boardwalk that made this town the mecca of boxing that it once was. I think a fight with a big name opponent later this Summer would create great buzz in the Atlantic City boxing scene, and it would keep me moving towards my goal of being a world champion.

Atlantic City, NJ (Hunyo 7, 2017)–Super Middleweight Gabriel Pham (8-1, 4 KO’s) will look for his 3rd consecutive victory when he takes on veteran Edgar Perez in a bout scheduled for six-rounds that will be part of a packed undercard ito Sabado gabi sa The Claridge Hotel sa Atlantic City
The show is promoted by Rising Promotions.
Sa pangunahing kaganapan, Thomas “Cornflake” LaManna (22-2, 9 KO’s) tumatagal sa Carlos Winston Velasquez (24-28-2, 15 KO’s) sa isang walong-round welterweight contest
Since suffering his only professional blemish, ang 28 year-old Pham of Atlantic City, New Jersey has stopped his two previous opponents.
Pham believes he will only get better as his trainer, Chuck Eisenbeis will be back in his corner after being absent from Pham’s last couple of bouts.
It is good to have him back. He taught me everything that I know,” said Pham. “We have been working on footwork, and my jab. I have seen the improvement everyday. Chuck has been working with some UFC fighters and it is great to have him back.
In Perez he is taking on a durable fighter, who has faced many top prospects, 13 undefeated fighters and a world champion in Jermall Charlo.
He is a Puerto Rican. I know he is tough as I am Puerto Rican as well. Siya ay may 27 fights, so that is three-times more than I have. He is experienced and he goes rounds for the most part. I have seen some film where can be slick, so I have to be cautious of that. I have been working hard, so I am confident that I will get the job done.
With a win, Pham can see himself getting into contention for some regional title opportunities.
A win will set me up for a step up fight. I will discuss that with my manager after this fight. I am happy where I am at as this will be the 3rd fight this year for me and this is by far the busiest stretch of my career. I am looking to impress the fans and keep doubling the expectations with each fight. This will be a top-shelf performance. I want to stop this guy. I don’t go in looking for it, but if I see that I have him staggered or hurt, I will try to get him out of there.

Atlantic City, NJ (Hunyo 6, 2017)–Popular native son, welterweyt Anthony “Juice” Bata will look for his 6th consecutive win when he battles hard-hitting George Sosa in the eight-round co-feature ito Sabado night at The Claridge Hotel in Atlantic City.
The show is promoted by Rising Promotions.
Sa pangunahing kaganapan, Thomas “Cornflake” LaManna (22-2, 9 KO’s) tumatagal sa Carlos Winston Velasquez (24-28-2, 15 KO’s) sa isang walong-round welterweight contest
Young of Atlantic City has a record of 16-2 with six knockouts has won five in a row was given the task of fighting Sosa on two weeks notice. Young was training for an all-New Jersey showdown with Juan “Ang hayop” Rodriguez, JR. but Rodriguez had to pull out due to an injury.
My camp has been great. Sosa is a late-replacement, but that really does not matter, because I was preparing for whoever,”sinabi ng 29 year-old Young.
Young knows that Sosa is a big puncher, but feels he is a different fighter outside of his home-country of the Dominican Republic.
Sosa has 15 panalo, and I know he has all of his victories by knockout. But he was matched lightly when he fought in the Dominican Republic. It doesn’t matter what he will bring, because I have been preparing for him like he is Floyd Mayweather.
Young has been preparing in New Jersey under the tutelage of trainer, Raul “Chino” Rivas. Young is in a camp that includes recent world champion Jason Sosa, top contender Tevin Farmer and lightweight contender Michael Perez among others, and Young feels that the switch of trainers, which mirrors this win streak is no coincidence.
