Las Vegas (Lub rau hli ntuj 10, 2016) – The heat was on in Las Vegas hmo no, temperature-wise as well as the action inside the ring, for the third installment of “Knockout Night at the D” series, which aired live on CBS kev ua si Network from the outdoorDowntown Las Vegas Txheej xwm Center (DLVEC) nyob rau hauv 90+ degree conditions before another capacity crowd.
An old-time Las Vegas grudge match turned into a highly entertaining boxing war as WBC United States (USNBC) sib champion Demond “Body Shot” Brock(12-3-1, 4 Kos) won a hard fought 10-round decision over former USNBC 135-pound titlist and previously unbeaten challenger Chuy “Hurrican” Gutierrez (14-1-1, 4 Kos).
Lub “Knockout Night at the D” series, presented by lub D Las Vegasand DLVEC, is promoted by Roy Jones Jr. (RJJ) Boxing Promotions.
“What a night we had downtown,” hais tias Derek Stevens, Owner and CEO of the D Las Vegas and DLVEC. “I want to thank the Nevada Athletic Commission for allowing us to do these fights outdoors. I want to shout out to Chuy and Brock,,,..what fighters! Let’s keep this going downtown.”
Brock, fighting out of New Orleans, learned to box in Louisiana State Penitentiary, where he served nearly 15 xyoo, sentenced as an adult at 15 for armed robbery. The determined lightweight controlled the pace and consistently beat hometown favorite Gutierrez to the punch all night. Gutierrez, a tough Mexican who lives in Las Vegas, showed the heart of a champion, albeit in a losing effort to a fresher Brock.
“I think I put on a great performance,” Brock commented after the fight. “I came out to give my best effort. We trained to fight inside to fight Chuy, not box, to make him uncomfortable in a fight he’s not used to. I won this fight on the inside. No backing up for 10 nyuaj rounds. We prepared that way because we knew Chuy was going to come in throwing shots. But he’d never fought anybody of my caliber. I was looking to finish him but I didn’t want to get careless.”
In a battle of unbeaten junior middleweight, Mexican invader Rolando “Rola” Garza (9-0, 6 Kos) thiab U.S. Marine Corps veteran Erasmo “The Reckoning” Garcia (5-1-1, 3 Kos) put on a show in the televised co-feature. All they really needed was a phone booth as the two warriors pounded each other from the opening bell, although Garza got the much better of the action for the first four rounds, buzzing Garcia at the end of the fourth. The game Garcia came back in the fifth, despite suffering a lot of damage from a relentless attack by Garza, who simply outclassed his overmatched opponent with his technical boxing skills. Garza, who was deducted a point for throwing a low blow in the fifth round, won a unanimous 6-round decision in a firefight.
“We worked the body and, ua tsaug rau Vajtswv, yeej sib ntaus,” Garza noted. “He’s a tough, unbeaten guy. We came here and did it. Viva Las Vegas!”
In the television opener, Las Vegas welterweight prospect Jeremy “J-Flash” Nichols (5-0. 2 Kos) dominated previously unbeaten Adam Vasquez (5-1-1). The flashy Nichols dropped Vasquez twice in the final round to win a 4-round unanimous decision by scores of 40-34 peb lub sij hawm.
Nichols won his third fight in the last three months, “I can go next week,” Nichols said after the fight. “He was tall fighter who was undefeated. He didn’t come here to lose. I take my hat off to him because I hit him with some great shots. He is a tough guy with a big heart. I had to do the Ali Shuffle in the first round because he was my favorite fighter.”
Los Angeles heavyweight Johnathan “Johnnie” Rice (4-1, 2 Kos), a former Winthrop College (NC) basketball neeg uas ua ntawv, upset 4-time Mexican National amateur champion Edgar “El Chato” Ramirez (1-1, 1 KO), pitching a shutout for a unanimous 4-round decision.
Las Vegas junior featherweight Max “Baby Face Assassin” Ornelas (1-0, 1 KO de an auspices pro debut, one day after his high school graduation ceremony, one day prior to his 18th hnub yug. Ornelas dropped Robert “Lil’ Rob” Ledesma (1-5) midway through the first round. Ledesma rose but Ornelas hit him with a vicious left hook to the body, hurting Ledesma who turned his back and walked away in pain. Referee Jay Nady stepped in and halted the fight.
Heavyweights Tracey “The Titan” Johnson (4-2-4), ntawm Boston, and Los Angeles’Cashton “Fedia-Tone” Hluas (2-1, 1 KO) set the stage in the opening fight of the evening. They stood toe-to-toe for most of the four rounds as Johnson, who has a Master’s Degree in Physical Education from Emmanuel College, won a 4-round split decision.

Gutierrez is seeking to expand his marquee on a national level, while Spinks attempts to shine on his own terms despite his spotlight catching last name.
Tsib-lub sij hawm, ob faib lub ntiaj teb champion Zab “Super” Judah (42-9, 29 Kos) yuav siv sij hawm nyob rau hauvJosh “Pitbull” Torres (15-4-2, 7 Kos), in the 10-round main event of the inaugural show of the new monthly pro boxing series, “Knockout Night at the D”, airing (8 p.m. PT / 11 p.m. THIAB) nyob rau CBS kev ua si Network from the Downtown Las Vegas Events Center (DLVEC).
Los ntawm lub D Las Vegas and promoted Englebrecht Promotions, lub “Knockout Night at the D” series’ inaugural event Hiav txwv. 12 will take place inside the DLVEC’s 20,000-square-foot tent, located in the heart of the downtown Las Vegas casino district, one block away from the world famous Fremont Street (200 S. 3rd St.).
The 27-year-old Gutierrez (14-0-1, 4 Kos), sib ntaus sib tua tawm ntawm Las Vegas, is ready to make a name for himself and Mar. 12th is scheduled to be his coming out party on a national stage. He’s rapidly become a fan favorite in Las Vegas because of his exciting, aggressive style of fighting. Chuy’s ready to spread his wings, now being showcased fighting on national television, and expand his growing fan-base.
Born in the fertile boxing town of Sinaloa, Mexico, which produced Hall of Famer Julio Cesar Chavez, Sr., cov ntau lwm tus neeg, Gutierrez is making up for lost time. He was a baseball prospect who didn’t box until he was 21. “I played sports in high school, baseball was my first love, and I dreamed of becoming a big leaguer,” Gutierrez said. “Boxing found me. I was attending college at Southern Nevada and working, but the first day I walked into Johnny Tocco’s gym, I fell in love with boxing. I’ve watched so many greats train there and I learned a lot from them.”
“I have a lot of respect for Spinks, but I’m just fighting the man, not his family. His grandfather was world champion, but I’m not fighting his grandfather. I’m excited to be fighting him on CBS Sports Network.”
Spinks (11-3-1, 7 Kos), who fights out of Huntington Beach, XWS LI, is not only the grandson of former world heavyweight champion and 1976 Olympic kub medalist, “Neon” Leon Spinks, his great uncle is world light heavyweight and heavyweight champion, in addition to being a 1976 Olympic kub medalist, Michael Spinks. His familiar last name in boxing has been a blessing, albeit one that has also put a lot of pressure on Leon. “Things have always been that way (siab) because I’m named after my grandfather, ‘Pops,'” Leon III explained. “From the beginning of my pro career, I was put in tough fights because of my name, just tough fights…real wars.
“I got to 8-0 but that hurt me because I couldn’t get good fights. But I’ve always really been my own man. This is a very, heev, very big event for me, my family will be in the house supporting me.”
