Santa Cruz will be making the first defense of his featherweight world title while Ceja puts his 122-pound title on the line after earning the vacant belt with a fifth round stoppage of Ruiz in an exciting back-and-forth fight in August.

Esto es lo que los combatientes tenían que decir Jueves:

LEO SANTA CRUZ

“Headlining a televised card has been my childhood dream. I could have never imagined I was going to get this far. And Here I am, on my second main event, defending my title on a premium network. I’m so psyched. I cannot believe it.

“The first time I put the gloves on, I knew that I had found my craft, and I also knew that it was not going to be an easy road. I knew that I had to work hard to become a champion. Así, I trained the hardest and I fought the hardest, and with my father by my side I got here, where I’m at today. I owe him everything.

“I remember watching all the great Mexican Champions and day dreaming about being like them one day. It felt unreachable. I thought it was impossible to get where they were. But I worked hard, really hard from the beginning.

“The most important thing is that the fans leave happy and get their money’s worth. I’m glad that Kiko has come prepared because we’re ready for a great fight.

“People are saying that I should walk through Kiko Martinez, but I don’t listen to that. I look at Kiko the same way I look at any other opponent. When we step inside the ring, we are equals.

"Al final del día, the winner will be the fighter who has prepared more and who has imposed his will on the other man.

Kiko Martínez

“I have faced much stronger boxers than Leo and come Sábado, all of those who did bet on me for this fight, I am going to make you a lot of money.

“I am excited and proud to know that Sergio Martinez will be present en sábado supporting me. His guidance and presence

“My trainer could not be here, but we have not taken one day off in training camp and I have been pushed to my limit to prepare me for this fight. I’m thankful to Robert Garcia for being in my corner en sábado.

“I know this is a great opportunity to fight Leo Santa Cruz and I will make the most of it. I’m going to leave everything inside the ring so that the fight fans enjoy a great championship matchup.

“I feel that Leo Santa Cruz is a great fighter, he has beat some incredible fighters. He’s a great athlete and boxer. Sometimes people will try to make him out to be more than he actually is but they are mistaken with what they see in me. I am not to be mistaken as the underdog here.

JULIO CEJA

“As Hugo mentioned, we have both trained even harder than last time and we’re more prepared physically and mentally.

“I’m going to give everybody a great fight just like last time. I’m walking into the ring knowing my opponent very well. We’ve been to war. I know what to expect from him. I know about his punch and I know how to counter it.

“I’m going to be alert and ready. I’ll be a little more intelligent, because I know that he’s coming well prepared and he’s coming for the world title, but he’s not going to get it.

“There are going to be no surprises in this fight. Hugo Ruiz said that he was training harder this time. But I am too. I’ve trained very hard.

“The key for me to win this fight is to keep my hands up and to not give him one inch. I cannot be careless. I’ll be strategic and use my wisdom. I cannot come in with my hands down because I know I’ll pay for it. But nothing to worry about, we have rectified those issues in training camp. Estoy listo. He’s not taking my belt away from me.

“I’m glad that he says he is better prepared this time because I am better than ever. My team has been instrumental in preparing me for this matchup.

“The winner will be the man who is more prepared physically and mentally. But the real winner will be the fans at Honda Center because this is an amazing card and we’re going to put on an amazing fight.”

HUGO RUIZ

“If you liked the first fight between us, then you are going to love this one.

“I’m excited to be fighting once again in Southern California. I’ve trained very hard and I have prepared myself for this world title opportunity.

“I’m looking forward to putting on a grand show for all my fans en sábado noche ".

JOSE SANTA CRUZ, Santa Cruz’ Father & Entrenador

I hear Kiko has a great trainer on his corner. Robert Garcia is really good, but I have news for Kiko, his trainer is not going to fight for him.

Once a fighter steps into the ring, he’s alone in there. There are no trainers and no great promoters that can fight for him.”

“Kiko speaks about this prestigious trainer and thinks that by mentioning him, he is going to intimidate us. He has something else coming. The trainer won’t fight for Kiko. Roberto Garcia has trained my son and knows Leo very well but that does not give Kiko the upper hand.”

TOM BROWN, Head of TGB Promotions

“Southern California favorite Leo Santa Cruz returns to bring his action style to the ring. He will be opposed by a tough former world champion in Kiko Martinez who is sure to make this a tremendous fight.

“The first fight between Ceja and Ruiz was a true back and forth war. Should this pick up right where it left off, we will have a great fight to start the telecast.

“I’m looking forward to a great night en sábado night in front of the fantastic Southern California boxing fans.”

TIM RYAN, CEO & President of Honda Center

“I’m so thankful to everyone for helping to bring boxing back to Orange County. It’s hard to believe that Julio Cesar Chavez fought here in 1996, because it seems like yesterday.

“We have a great arena and a great fan base that loves boxing here in Orange County. La tarjeta en sábado is wonderful. I know these guys will be ready and I’m looking forward to an action-packed night on the 27º.

CHRIS deBlasio, Vicepresidente, Sports Communication Showtime Networks

“This is a fight fan’s fight card and we are looking forward to some explosive action. I think everyone knows that the lighter weight classes, especially at the championship level, produce exciting fights. My favorite examples include the epic series between Israel Vazquez and Rafael Marquez, which are available on SHOWTIME platforms and should wet your appetite for what we will see en sábado noche ".

“60 MINUTES SPORTS” CAPTURES THE EXCITEMENT AND SPIRIT OF NAVAL ACADEMY BOXING ON THE 75TH ANNIVERSARY OF THIS ANNAPOLIS TRADITION, Martes, MARZO 1 EN SHOWTIME®

Cameras Will Be Following the Fighters At The Brigade Boxing Championship Este viernes Noche

NUEVA YORK (Febrero. 25, 2016) - 60 MINUTES SPORTS will offer a window into one of the most time-honored traditions in America’s military when it presents a segment on the U.S. Naval Academy’s boxing program and its annual Brigade Boxing Championship. The feature builds up to the 75º championship this Friday, Febrero. 26, in Annapolis, Md., and correspondent Jack Ford and 60 MINUTES SPORTS will be in the arena to record the action for the men’s and women’s bouts. The report will appear on the next edition of 60 MINUTES SPORTS, Martes, Marzo 1 en 9 p.m. Y/PT, por SHOWTIME.

Boxing has been practiced at the nation’s second oldest military institution for 150 año, and midshipmen have vied for the Brigade Boxing Championship since 1941. Along the way to this year’s 75ºanniversary, the academy has made learning to box a requirement of graduation from the U.S. Academia Naval.

The man who teaches the “sweet science” to midshipmen – male and female – is Head Boxing Coach Jim McNally. It’s about future leaders facing fear. “We use boxing…as a laboratory…an environment of controlled stress, physical fear,” says McNally. “We want them to learn a lot about themselves and how they’re going to react to those situations,” he tells Ford.

60 MINUTES SPORTS shot the story in Annapolis in the fall and last January to show the process and tell the stories of three midshipmen who will be in the ring este viernes fighting for a championship. One of them, Samantha Glaeser, has a chance to make academy history. There have been only 19 at Annapolis to win the crown all four years at the Naval Academy, and none was a woman. Glaeser has a chance Viernes noche.

Ford also speaks with Glaeser’s foe, Stephanie Simon, another midshipmen with pugilistic talents who has a National Collegiate Boxing championship under her belt. She has not been able to defeat Glaeser, sin embargo, in their two previous meetings for the brigade championship.

Ford also talks to Midshipman Jourdan Looney, whose two brigade championship titles are testament to what boxing means to the Academy. He had no boxing experience before he entered the Naval Academy. “Boxing…fighting is one of my biggest fears. I conquer that one fear, I’ve conquered any other fear that I could possibly have.” He’ll be in contention for his third brigade title Viernes noche.

Los Estados Unidos. Naval Academy Superintendent, Vice Adm. Walter Carter, sums up the importance of boxing to America’s future naval officers for Ford. "[Boxeo] is that moment where no matter how well you think you have planned out your couple minutes in the ring, you’re going to learn something new, because that plan is going to have to be different….”

Here’s what Frampton, Quigg and their trainers and promoters had to say in Manchester on Thursday:

CARL FRAMPTON:

“I’m better in every department, simple y llanamente.

“Because of the magnitude of this fight, everything had to be perfect. I’ve done everything right this time,"

“This means so much; there is a lot at stake. It’s more than titles – it’s pride and bragging rights. It’s proving who is the best. Reputation is a big deal, so there is so much on the line.

“I’m prepared to do whatever it takes to win. I’ve punching power to KO him in any round and I’ve the boxing brain to win on points.

“I’ve spent 17 weeks in camp, the longest ever. I missed my son’s first steps and both my kids’ birthdays. I did that because this could be my toughest fight. I’m not going to let Scott Quigg make all that be for nothing.”

“Va a ser una gran pelea, one for the ages. Ganaré. It doesn’t matter how, KO or clear points decision.

On the home-team dressing room:

“I’m contractually the A-side. It’s a question of principle.”

SCOTT QUIGG:

“Nobody does what I do in terms of dedication to the sport. I’ll win because of boxing brain and ability.

“It’ll mean everything to win. Since the age of 15, all I have done is eat, sleep and train.

"Sábado is my moment of destiny and, créame, Voy a ganar esta lucha. I’ve put in too much for anyone to stop me.”

“Tune in for a great fight. I’m going to prove I’m the best super bantamweight. I’m going to win by knockout.

On the home-team dressing room:

“It’s my arena, I’m the home fighter. I want the home dressing room.”

SHANE MCGUIGAN, Entrenador de Frampton:

“They are two legitimate, world class fighters and there is maybe only 2 percent difference at the top level – Carl has that extra percent.

“As a trainer you are only as good as your fighters and I’m lucky to have Carl.”

JOE GALLAGHER, Quigg’s Trainer

"Él (Shane McGuigan) was a nutritionist a few years ago who asked to help Gerry Storey. He’s only famous because of his dad.

“They are underestimating Scott’s boxing brain and being disrespectful throughout the build-up.”

BARRY MCGUIGAN, Frampton’s Promoter

“There has never been a bigger super bantamweight fight of this magnitude in Europe. It’s got a Barrera-Morales feel to hit and is going to be a magnificent occasion.

“I think Carl will have too much for him, but it has the potential to be a great fight.”

EDDIE HEARN, Quigg’s Promoter

“It’s bigger than Froch vs. Groves, because it is a global event.

“I’m proud to have made the fight happen. This can ignite the sport and keep it alive.

“The atmosphere and passion will eclipse all that has gone before. It just doesn’t get any bigger than this.

“I can’t see anything other than a great fight. With two fighters this talented, so much on the line and so much passion from teams and fans, you’re going to get something very special.”

Esto es lo que los combatientes tenían que decir Miércoles:
Kiko Martínez
I’m very happy to have Robert Garcia in my corner. He has led so many fighters to world titles. I’m excited and I’m anxious to get things going. I’m ready to collaborate and I think we’ll do great things Sábado.
The people who doubt that I will take this title only make me stronger and more dangerous.
Training camp has been extremely tough with lots of demands due to facing a champion like Leo Santa Cruz because he’s an excellent boxer who I admire. I have completely devoted myself to training for this fight.
En Sábado everyone will get to see the best Kiko Martinez. I am going to be bringing the pressure and giving you all a great fight with power punches to disarm Santa Cruz and take the title.
I hope that fans will change their mindset of seeing me as the underdog and support me because I am here to show something else.
I am very happy to be here and have the opportunity to fight in the United States again.
I love this California weather, it reminds me of the weather of El Canario where I was training and I am feeling great.
“Estoy listo. Now all there is left is to wait. We’ve got the weigh-in ahead of us and I’ve already made weight. I will be working up a sweat just to remain active and distracted because I am ready to jump in the ring and start the best fight of my life.
I have won a world title in the United States and became a world champ here and I am expecting to become the world champ here once again. That fight was how I became known here, now this fight will be the biggest fight of my career.
I’ve been studying [Santa Cruz] for quite some time now, since I’ve been waiting to fight him previously, now it has come to this point in this time of my life. I have grown and learned so much since then that I truly feel that I have learned from my mistakes and grown to the best of my life yet.
“Afortunadamente [trainer Gabriel Sarmiento] has been training me up until this point. We’re on the same team and we have each other’s backs and he is still fully supportive. I have him in my heart and I know that he will be supporting me all the way.
I am not worried about what anyone is saying. All I want is to get in the ring comeSábado and demonstrate that Leo and I will put on a huge fight and the audience will not be bored for a single minute.
JULIO CEJA
We have had a long and very intense camp. We are prepared and know what is on the line here because we know that Hugo comes at it with everything he’s got. This is a prestigious opportunity that I have been presented with and we can forecast that it will be an all-or-nothing fight.
This will be a toe-to-toe fight because we both know each other’s strengths and having fought before we know this rematch will be explosive.
From the second we knew there would be a rematch, we immediately started training. We knew going in to this again that it will be a tough fight and this one will be better than the first. It will be more dangerous and more of a fight than the last because of what the rematch represents.
I have trained very hard because I know what is on the line and I am not going to allow Ruiz to take that title from be so easily. It is going to be an all-out battle.
Hugo has reach and height on me but all I know is that once I hear that bell, none of that matters. There’s a reason why they call me the champ and I am confident in my skill to show that.
I am looking to show up and give the fans an entertaining show. I will be looking for a fight all throughout and keep it exciting for the fans who are coming out to see a good fight.
I devoted my life to becoming the champion and my life dream was always to be a champ, so this is something that I will fight to the end for.
I became a champ here in the United States and now that I am blessed with the opportunity to get a rematch here. I’m ready to take full advantage of this chance to give it 100 por ciento.”
GERALD WASHINGTON
I grew up boxing and boxing was always my passion as a kid. I used to go to the local Boys & Girls Club as a kid and I’ve been in love with it since. It’s always been a part of me and I’m glad I can do it again and take over this division.
There are lot’s similarities in football and boxing. You watch film, break your opponent down. We take everything from sparring and practice and take them out to the game.
“Esto va a ser una gran pelea. It’s always a good battle when you have two undefeated fighters. It’s going to be a night full of action. I look forward to the action. I love stepping up and facing top-flight competition.
Rivas has an extensive amateur background. Él es un gran, strong guy who likes the knockout. He’s going to go for it. I’m prepared for a fight like that. I know the pressure is coming. We’ve worked hard since my last fight.
The jab is the key for everything. It opens up all the other shots and keeps the opponent off balance. I’m going to hammer him with it. It’s a major tool.
It’s a great honor to be fighting here in Los Angeles. My whole life has taken place in this state and everyone who has supported me is coming together en sábado to see it all in action.
Heavyweight boxing is always exciting. We’re the hardest hitters in the game. I can’t wait to show everyone the hard work I’ve put in and give a great performance.
I’m going to be smart and disciplined in the ring. But you also have to have a strong will and have the determination to keep moving forward. You have to step to the guy and apply the pressure.
My height and reach is always to my advantage but it’s not that. It’s the legs, the mind, the combinations. Lo es todo.
You will see a smart and aggressive style from me en sábado and I’m going to take that into the next level of my career.

MARZO 12 BOXING EVENT CANCELLATION NOTICE

NUEVA YORK (Febrero. 24, 2016)—After extensive discussions between DiBella Entertainment, Showtime Networks and Mohegan Sun, la Marzo 12 boxing event has been canceled.

Following the injury to Keith Thurman and the postponement of the Thurman vs. Porter bout, we evaluated several options for salvaging the card, but various factors, including scheduling and programming issues, prevented the parties involved from doing so.

The featherweight bout between fellow three-division world champions Abner Mares and Fernando Montiel will remain paired with the Thurman vs. Porter welterweight world championship event, which is being rescheduled for a later date on CBS. The other bouts on the card will be rescheduled on a date or dates to be announced.

Every effort was made to move forward with the remainder of this excellent card, despite the tight time frame,” dijo Lou DiBella, El presidente de DiBella Entertainment. “Sin embargo, scheduling conflicts and other factors forced us to make the unfortunate decision to cancel the entire event. There are a number of attractive fights on the table and we look forward to presenting all of them to the fans as soon as possible.

Tickets purchased for the Marzo 12 event will be refunded at the point of purchase.

Undefeated 122-pound world champions Carl Frampton (FIB) y De Scott Quigg (AMB) held media workouts el martes en Manchester, Inglaterra, as they finalize preparation for their long-awaited super bantamweight unification showdown this Sábado, Febrero. 27 enManchester Arena.

The massive unification between Frampton (21-0, 14 KOs), de Belfast, Irlanda, and Quigg (32-0-2, 23 KOs), of Lancashire, United Kingdom will be televised live on SHO EXTREME en 5:30 p.m. Y/PT.

La SHOWTIME BOXING INTERNACIONAL® ofrenda del Sky Sports telecast will feature analysis from SHOWTIME Sports®analistas Barry Tompkins, Steve Farhood and guest analyst and WBA Middleweight World Champion Daniel Jacobs.

An encore presentation of the bout will air on SHOWTIME® immediately following Sábado de vivir SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING®telecast headlined by three-division world champion Leo Santa Cruzy el ex campeón de peso Kiko Martínez.

Here’s what Frampton and Quigg had to say as they approachSábado de lucha:

CARL FRAMPTON:

“I have wanted this fight for a long, mucho tiempo. I thrive on the big occasions and there are not many bigger than a domestic super fight.

“I won my world title on a massive stage, Scott Quigg was handed his title after a draw. He has fought on big cards but not as a bill-topper and I genuinely don’t know if he will be able to handle this level of pressure. I’m going to use all of my experience to outbox, outfight and outgun Scott Quigg.

“We’ve been chasing these boys for years. They didn’t want it, end of story. Then all it took was one below par performance from me to convince his team that they should finally take the fight. If that first round in my last fight is what they’re basing their hopes of victory on then Scott is in for a big, big shock.

“I’ve had the best training camp of my career, I’m in the shape of my life and I’m going to become the unified Super Bantamweight World Champion.

“First and foremost I’m doing this for my family. I have two beautiful kids and both Christine (Frampton) and I want the best for them, that’s what drives me and makes me so focused on being the best in the world.

“I am 100 percent dedicated to the sport of boxing, I spend twelve-weeks in training camp in London away from home, only getting to go home a handful of times and I do this so I can be the best I possibly can.

“People have said Quigg trains like a machine. I can tell you I train every bit as hard if not harder, but I’m no machine. I don’t need to be programmed in order to perform.

“Shane (McGuigan) is a brilliant coach, I’ve been saying it all along. But now people are sitting up and taking notice. Shane and I work hard on tactics and techniques when we approach every fight, but we both know that if tactics need tweaking mid fight I can think my way through a contest. Scott Quigg can’t.”

SCOTT QUIGG:

“This is the perfect time now for this fight. We’re both world champions, we’re both undefeated, and I believe this is the perfect time for me to go out there and do a job on him.

“It’s a fight I’ve wanted for a long time. It’s a fight that’s been brewing for a long time. Seeing Carl sign on the dotted line meant that I was one step closer to achieving everything I’ve worked towards; becoming the best.

“I’ve always wanted the chance to prove I’m the best. Now the fight’s been made, I’m one million per cent confident that I’m going win in spectacular fashion. I can win on points, but I will knock out Carl Frampton.

“No-one expected me to get Kiko out of there early. If I’d have stopped him late or won on points, then Carl had already done that, so the only way I could get credit or show people what I am capable of was KO him early.

“With Carl and his performance in the States, they handpicked (Alejandro) Gonzalez from a list of opponents because they thought that he would be the easiest one. They wanted to go over there and look good in his U.S. debut so the Americans would rave about him – and he nearly came unstuck.

“We respect each other as fighters. You don’t become a world champion by chance, there’s a lot of hard work and a lot of talent involved. But they are in for a shock because they think I can only fight one way. They don’t think I can’t adapt and I’ll just come steaming forward. Maybe I will do that, but if I do come steaming forward, it’s because I am going to KO him.

“People are saying now that because I’ve been knocking guys out quite early that I’ve been going out for the stoppages, but that’s not the case. I’ve been going out and I’ve been boxing.

“If I land clean on any super bantamweight or featherweight in the world, I will knock them out. Así, it’s about just making sure I pick the right time and I open the gaps. And when the gaps are there then I’ll take them.

“I don’t take any notice of whether I’ve got the crowd behind me or whether it is behind my opponent, but I know for a fact that he takes comfort from having a lot of support. When he’s taken away from that, he shows his vulnerabilities. I think that will affect him.

“The Irish are very passionate about the sport and they know their boxing inside-out. They get behind their man and they will create a great atmosphere. The atmosphere is going to go off even more because we’re both at the top of our game and there’s a lot riding on this. There’s a lot of pride at stake – it’s going to be electric.”

“I got into boxing to become world champion. I’ve done that and now I’ve set new goals to reach greater heights because I want to challenge myself every day.

“Ricky Hatton became a crossover star and was a hit in the US. He took 40,000 Brits to Las Vegas and became a global star. That’s the next goal that I’ve set for myself and I can make it if I keep working hard, maintain my dedication and focus.

“Getting this fight now on SHOWTIME in the U.S. is the first step. I’ll go out and do a job on Carl, win in a spectacular fashion and that’s going to give me a boost for my profile in the U.S.

“I am not going to give the WBA belt up. Quiero pelear con los mejores. Guillermo Rigondeaux is next because that’s what the WBA have ordered.

“My focus is on beating Carl. We’ll look at fighting the best out there after that. Siempre he dicho, ‘I’m out to fight the best and beat the best.’ So, I’m obviously going to fight Rigondeaux. I’m not scared of fighting him. I’m not shying away from the challenge. I thrive on that sort of task and fighting Rigondeaux – who’s rightly so ranked No. 1 in the division because of what he’s achieved – would be a huge challenge. I honestly believe that if the time comes and we fight, I can beat him.”

SHANE MCGUIGAN, Entrenador de Frampton:

“There is a lot of debate about who hits harder between Frampton and Quigg. I know Carl Frampton is the hardest punching Super Bantamweight in the world.

“One thing you can’t argue about is who has the better pedigree and who has the better boxing brain. Carl wins hands down in both departments and he is going to show this in brutal and clinical fashion.

“Carl can box off the back foot, he can fight on the front foot and he has devastating one-punch power.”

BARRY MCGUIGAN, Frampton’s Promoter:

“Carl is always so cool when the heat is on him, he steps up to the plate and delivers.

“Even in his last fight when he didn’t get off to a great start, Carl still managed to pull himself together and do what was needed to get the win.

“He’s a natural born winner. I had to work very hard just to be able to compete at world level. I think the same can be said of Scott Quigg, but for Carl it comes more naturally. Couple this with his incredible work ethic and that is why Carl Frampton is the best in the world.”
