Smith burst onto the boxing scene in 2016 when he defeated, top rated light heavyweight, Andrzej Fonfara on NBC in Chicago, and again later that year, when he knocked living legend Bernard Hopkins clear out of the ring, becoming the first person to ever KO the former multi-division world champion and future Hall of Famer.

Reis floored Braekhus once, but she lost a 10-round decision. The former WBC and UBF World middleweight champion will meet former world title challenger PATTY “LA ELEGANTE” RAMIREZ (11-5, 5 KO), van Mexico, op Augustus. 30 in Mohegan Sun.
Six New Englanders are scheduled to provide support on the undercard, inclusief 2016 GEEN VAN BEIDE. Golden Gloves kampioen “ACTION” ANTHONY LAUREANO (7-0, 3 KO), van Oost-Hartford (CT), in a six-round junior welterweight match against Mexican knockout artist JUAN de la cruz RODRIGUEZ (8-9-1, 6KO). FRISCO, TEXAS (Juni 16, 2018) – Errol Spence Jr. verdedigde zijn IBF Wereldkampioenschap weltergewicht met een knock-out in de eerste ronde van de voorheen ongeslagen verplichte uitdager Carlos Ocampo in een thuiskomstgevecht zaterdag op SHOWTIME in Ford Center in The Star. Een uitverkochte zaal van meer dan 12,600 fans pakten Ford Center in The Star in Frisco in om getuige te zijn van Spence's eerste thuiskomstverdediging als kampioen en zijn eerste gevecht in Dallas sindsdien 2015. De consensus top-5 pond-voor-pond-jager stelde niet teleur, Hij beukte het lichaam vanaf de openingsbel met zijn kenmerkende lichaamsaanval en voortreffelijk ringgeneraalschap.

Na het gevecht, SHOWTIME Sportverslaggever Jim Gray, die afgelopen zondag werd opgenomen in de International Boxing Hall of Fame, vroeg Spence wat hij vervolgens zou willen doen.

 

 

 

“Ik wil het beste vechten,' beloofde Spence. “Danny Garcia en Shawn Porter vechten met elkaar (voor de WBC-titel) en ik wil er absoluut een verenigend gevecht van maken. We hebben allebei hetzelfde management, we vechten allebei op SHOWTIME. Waarom zou u dat niet laten gebeuren?? Ik wil zeker dat gevecht wanneer het beschikbaar is.

De kampioen Romein (24-2-1, 9 KO) was de snellere en scherpere jager vanaf de openingsbel. Romeins, die de tweede verdediging van zijn riem van 122 pond maakte, sloeg herhaaldelijk op het lichaam 12 rondes, verbindend op een duizelingwekkende manier 50 procent van zijn lichaamsschoten. Bloemen (25-1, 17 KO), die er niet in slaagde aan te komen voor het titelgevecht en de riem niet kon winnen, moe in de tweede helft van het gevecht en was grotendeels een stationair doelwit voor Roman 12 rondes.

 

 

 

Beide vechters gooiden meer dan 1,000 stoten, toch was het Roman die de effectievere bokser was, aansluiten op een indrukwekkend 42 procent van zijn power shots.

 

 

 

‘Ik probeerde hem te boksen. We hebben geprobeerd een slim gevecht te voeren,zei Romein. “We hebben geprobeerd hem eruit te halen, maar helaas konden we dat niet.

 

 

 

“Ik zou graag willen verenigen. Ik zou graag een van de kampioenen willen uitdagen. Ik zou graag Rey Vargas of Isaac Dogboe tegenkomen. Ik vind het ook niet erg om terug te gaan naar Japan.”

 

 

 

“Ik weet dat ik het tijdens de training verprutst heb,'Zei Flores. “Ik heb het gewicht niet gehaald, maar ik wilde nog steeds optreden en alles geven wat ik heb.

 

 

 

“We sloegen elkaar allebei veel. ik raakte (Romeins) met enkele goede schoten, Ik kon hem gewoon niet afmaken. Ik was waarschijnlijk in de buurt 60 procent op energiegebied. Vanaf de vijfde ronde moest ik gewoon met puur hart vechten.

 

 

 

"(Romeins) een geweldige show neer te zetten voor de fans, en dat is wat mij een geweldig gevoel geeft. Dat is alles wat ik wilde, een goed gevecht leveren.'

 

 

 

In de opening aanval van de Showtime Championship Boxing uitzending, Javier Fortuna liep een blessure op toen hij door de touwen viel als gevolg van een accidentele duw in de vierde ronde en zijn duel van 140 pond met Adrian Granados werd als 'No Decision' bestempeld..

 

 

 

Granados (18-6-2, 11 KO) en Fortuna (33-2-1, 23 KO) beiden kwamen zwaaiend uit de openingsbel naar buiten. In een wilde vierde ronde, Fortuna kreeg twee punten in mindering, eerst voor stoten tegen de achterkant van het hoofd, en ten tweede voor vasthouden. Na de tweede puntaftrek, de voormalige kampioen van 130 pond Fortuna bewoog zich agressief naar voren en loste een reeks schoten.

 

 

 

Even later, Granados en Fortuna klemden zich vast aan de touwen bij de hoek van Granados toen Fortuna achterover viel door de touwen, zweepslagen in zijn nek terwijl hij achterover viel. Klagen over pijn en gebrek aan beweging, Fortuna werd gestabiliseerd met een nekbrace en op een brancard uit de ring gehaald, wat later als voorzorgsmaatregel werd beschreven..

 

 

 

Ten tijde van de onderbreking, Grandos leidde op alle drie de scorekaarten van de juryleden.

 

 

 

“Ik heb hem niet geduwd. Ik denk dat hij met zijn eigen is gevallen,' zei Granados. 'Ik denk dat hij een excuus zocht toen hij naar buiten ging. We waren allebei aan het vechten, maar ik wist dat hij voelde dat ik sterker werd. Hij betrapte me met een schot en ik werd er gewoon opgewonden van.

 

 

 

“Eerst en vooral wil ik gewoon bidden dat het goed met hem gaat. Laten we de herkansing doen. Ik snakte naar een gevecht op 140-jarige leeftijd.'

Richard “Popeye” Rivera smokes Jaime Solorio in 8th round

HARTFORD, Conn. (Juni 17, 2018) – Rising Hartford folk hero Richard “Popeye de matroos” Rivera kept his pro record perfect (8-0) intact, knocking out his tough opponent, Jaime “Zarco” Solorio (12-4-2, 9 KO), in the eighth round to capture the vacant ABF Continental cruiserweight title, afgelopen nacht (Zaterdag) in the main event on the “Fight Night at The Capital” pro boxing card, at Xfinity Centre in Hartford.

 

 

 

The reigning UBF All Americas light heavyweight champion, Rivera (8-0, 7 KO) is arguably the hardest pound-for-pound puncher in New England, if not the entire Northeast. After breaking his last opponent’s ankle with the force of his power, the incredibly popular Hartford fighter

 

 

 

Boxing trainer Tony Blanco and his Hartford Boxing Center gym partner, Michael Tran, recently teamed with Rivera to form Hartford Boxing Promotions, which was promoting its first pro boxing event, “Fight Night at The Capital.”

 

 

 

“I’m excited to have promoted our first show here in Hartford and I hope other promoters will follow,” Blanco commented. “I’m happy for all of the fighters. This was our first but not last show. We’re bringing boxing back to Hartford.

 

 

 

“I’m also excited about Sharrad’s pro debut (Collier), who is like a son to me, and Richie, my brother and partner. Everything I do is for them, that’s who I work for them.”

 

 

 

The durable Solorio had only been knocked out once in 17 pro fights going into the ring against Rivera, who has knock out six of his seven victims.

 

 

 

The first was a feeling-out round, but Rivera picked up the pace in the second, landing several hard shots on his game Mexican opponent. The highly entertaining Rivera cruised through the third through fifth, picking his spots better, but it was bombs away in the sixth as Rivera landed a right that sent Solorio to the deck. Solorio was penalized a point in the sixth for unsportsmanlike conduct.

 

 

 

 

In the seventh round, Solorio appeared to be fighting to survive, frequently holding and clinching, but he came forward in spurts as Rivera started loading up for a knockout that finally came in the eighth round. Rivera had never fought more than four rounds, but he was determined to ward off his opponent’s wrestling, landing a right-left-right uppercut combination to close the show with only 30 seconds left in the contest.

 

 

 

“I want to thank everybody for being here and bringing our community together in one house,” zei Rivera. “Happy Father’s Day. I dedicated this fight to my father who I love so much. I told everybody that he was going down in three, but Solorio was tough. I took him in deep water and I’m strong to the finish because I eat my spinach…..toot, toot!”

 

 

 

In an intra-Connecticut clash of junior welterweights, Danbury’s undefeated Omar “Het Beest” Bordoy, Jr. (6-0, 2 KO) uitgeteld Alexander “El Bravo” Picot (2-6-1), van Hartford, with only one second left in the sixth and final round of co-featured event.

 

 

 

Bordoy was hampered by a cut over his right eye, suffered during the second round from an unintentional headbutt, who was fighting in his first scheduled six-rounder. He pivoted and threw a short, straight right that rocked Picot, dropping him forward on the mat as referee Shada Murdaugh immediately waved off the count, calling the doctor into the ring.

 

 

 

A star was born in a professional debut as two-time New England Golden Gloves champion “The Special One” Sharad Collier (1-0, 1 KO, fighting at home in Hartford, displayed his vast arsenal of skills, uitspelen van Antonio Castillo, Jr. (1-1) in de eerste ronde.

 

 

 

The 21-year-old Collier showed the poise of a veteran and surprising power, especially considering he fought two full divisions higher than his natural weight class, due to his opponent weighing in as a junior middleweight. Collier decked Castillo early and finished him off with a barrage of unanswered punches until referee Danny Sciavone stopte de actie.

The 21-year-old Rosa dedicated the fight to his cousin, wijlen Luis “KO Koning” Rosa (23-1, 11 KO), who tragically died last January in a car accident at the age of 26.

 

 

 

New Britain, CT featherweight Nathan Martinez (1-0) had another very impressive pro debut, pitching a complete shutout (40-35) Op alle drie de rechters’ scorecards against Henry Garcia (0-2), despite it being an action-packed bout from start to finish. Martinez used lethal body shots, dropping Garcia with a left hook to the liver, and crisp combinations.

Rivalta Inks Puerto Rican Amateur Standout Luis Melendez to Managerial Contract

Fort Lauderdale, Florida-based boxing manager Henry Rivalta proudly announces the signing of 19-year-old featherweight prospect Luis “El Chucho” Melendez to a promotional contract.
A stand-out amateur in Florida and his native Puerto Rico, Melendez will be making his professional debut under the guidance of Rivalta in July.
Born and raised in Bayamon, Puerto Rico, Melendez started boxing at age 11. He went on to have 124 amateur gevechten, winning a number of Puerto Rican and international titles including the Junior Olympics, Olympic Cup, and the Puerto Rican Nationals from 101 lbs. naar 132 lbs.
Melendez says the managerial deal is the culmination of a long association the pair have held. “When I was about 15, I went to spar at the Mike Tyson Gym in West Palm Beach and I was sparring a pro and Henry saw me. He told me he likes what he sees and since then he’s had his eye on me. Now that I’m reaching my dream of going pro, Henry is the right person to help guide my career.”
A throwback fighter with a style more suited for the professional ranks, Melendez calls his style ‘smart aggressive.’
I have a very pro style. I sit down on my punches. I like to throw combinations a lot. I like to break my opponents down. I like to go to the body. Or, depending on the opponent, I can box you. I can also hit and not get hit when I need to.”
Melendez says training at KO Fitness in Hialeah, Florida, with trainer Michael Robles is going well and he’s excited to get started on his professional career. "Ik voel me geweldig. This is my dream. Bernstein was ringside providing expert analysis when Anthony Joshua TKO’d Wladimir Klitschko in the spring of 2017 voor 90,000 raucous fans at Wembley Stadium in London for the IBF and WBA heavyweight world title belts. Bernstein ranks the legendary Diego Corrales vs. Jose Luis Castillo bout as the best fight he has ever covered, followed by Israel Vasquez vs Rafael Marquez 3 en dan, the recent Erislandy Lara vs. Jarrett Hurd barnburner from earlier this year. Juan Manuel Lopez vs. Orlando Salido 1 and the Klitschko-Joshua mega fight round out his top five best SHOWTIME fights.

There have been dramatic upsets along the way during Bernstein’s SHOWTIME tenure, with Nonito Donaire vs. Vic Darchinyan ranking at the top of the list, followed by Ricky Hatton vs. Kosta Tszyu; Orlando Salido vs Juan Manuel Marquez; Austin Trout vs. Miguel Cotto and Andre Ward vs. Michaël Kessler.

Bernstein, who before joining SHOWTIME covered everything from Major League Baseball to the Olympic Games and the NFL Draft, is also an accomplished writer and author. He won the Chicago Newspaper Guild’s Award for best news story in 1975 and published his first book “Boxing for Beginners” in 1978. His most recent work, an enlightening look back at his 30 years in broadcasting (“Al Bernstein: 30 Jaar, 30 Undeniable Truths About Boxing, Sport-, and TV”) was published in 2012. Bernstein has also appeared in a number of movies such as “Rocky V”, “Streets of Gold”, and “Play It to the Bone.”

Bernstein has been recognized by multiple international and state Hall of Fames, but it has not always been about just boxing for Bernstein, or even sports. He serves on the board of directors and is a spokesman for Caring Place, a Las Vegas facility that was co-founded by his wife Connie, which provides free services to those whose lives have been touched by cancer.

Bernstein is also a singer and an expert equestrian. He has performed as a vocalist for the past 30 years doing mostly tunes from the Great American songbook. He has appeared at many casinos in Las Vegas and around the country. Recently he has been performing at the Tuscany Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. As an equestrian, Bernstein participated in a number of celebrity rodeos as both a participant and grand marshal.
