“He is a solid opponent with a lot of experience. He has a high work rate that you can tell that by his nickname ‘AK-47’. He is the perfect opponent for me at this point in my career as I start my climb to a world title. I know he’s coming to fight as am I, so there will definitely be some fireworks.”
On filling in to the 140-pound division…
“I have filled out perfectly for this division and working with Virgil Hunter has helped a lot. It is no secret that I have had four fights with Virgil Hunter and each one of them has ended with a knockout. I am stronger than ever, and I feel completely comfortable at junior welterweight. This is the weight class that I’ll be campaigning for a world title at.”
On fighting in his hometown of San Antonio….
“It is a blessing to fight in my hometown. I get homesick sometimes when I train as I think about family, friends and all the places I love to visit back home. The contest will be an eliminator for the No. 2 position in the IBF junior welterweight world rankings.

Broner (33-3, 24 KOs) is one of the most gifted boxers in the sport, having won world titles in four different weight classes by the age of 28. The Cincinnati, Ohio native has won championships at 130, 135, 140 y 147 pounds while facing top competition across the various divisions. Coach Kevin Cunningham is my head coach for this camp, but I did not fire Mike Stafford. I just added to my camp, because I needed the help. Vargas (28-2, 10 KOs), a 28-year-old former welterweight champion who was born in Los Angeles and now lives in Las Vegas, is always up for a challenge. His only two losses have come in welterweight title matches against pound-for-pound greats. He lost a controversial fight to Timothy Bradley, Jr. and dropped a unanimous decision Manny Pacquiao in a world title defense. Vargas won the welterweight title with a TKO victory over Sadam Ali in 2016 prior to the Pacquiao fight. Vargas is coming off a unanimous decision victory over Aaron Herrera in December as he works toward another world title opportunity.

BROOKLYN (Marzo 4, 2018) – Campeón mundial invicto de peso pesado Deontay “El bombardero de Bronce” Wilder retuvo su título del CMB en su séptima defensa con un nocaut en el décimo asalto sobre el retador invicto Luis “The Real King Kong” Ortiz en un emocionante evento principal de SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING el sábado por la noche desde el Barclays Center, la casa de BROOKLYN BOXEO®.

“Fue una gran pelea y me desempeñé bien.,” Ortiz dijo. “Pensé que estaba arriba en la tarjeta de puntuación entrando en la décima ronda, pero es boxeo de peso pesado y nunca se sabe lo que va a pasar.
“Casi lo tengo y creo que lo hubiera hecho si hubiera unos segundos más en la ronda.”
Wilder aterrizó Ortiz 98-87, aunque Ortiz tenía una ligera ventaja en golpes de poder aterrizados, 63-60.
En el evento co-estelar de SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING, José Uzcátegui (27-2, 23 KOs) derrotado Andre Dirrell (26-3, 16 KOs) a través de TKO dos segundos en la ronda nueve, a petición del entrenador de Dirrell, Virgil Hunter. La victoria, lo que convierte a Uzcategui en el campeón mundial interino de peso súper mediano de la FIB, pone al venezolano contundente en posición de luchar por el título de peso súper mediano que Caleb Truax ganó por decisión mayoritaria sobre James DeGale en diciembre.
La pelea del sábado por la noche fue una revancha de la reñida May 2017 fin, en el que Uzcategui fue descalificado por conectar un puñetazo luego de que sonara la campana para finalizar el octavo asalto. En la revancha, Uzcátegui dominó la acción de principio a fin, usando su poderosa mano derecha para preparar el escenario para el asalto fulminante que llevó a la esquina de Dirrell a detener la pelea dos segundos después del noveno asalto. Uzcátegui derrotó a Dirrell 169-141 en golpes totales, incluyendo un enorme 112-51 discrepancia en los golpes de poder aterrizados.
“Me sorprendió un poco que lo detuvieran en el noveno,” Said Uzcátegui. “Dije que sería el tercer asalto que lo noquearía. Tardó un poco más, pero finalmente llegó.

Unbeaten Cuban Faces WBC Heavyweight Champion Deontay Wilder Sábado, Marzo 3 en vivo por SHOWTIME desde Barclays Center en Brooklyn & Presentado por Premier campeones de boxeo
BROOKLYN (Febrero 26, 2018) – When unbeaten heavyweight Luis “The Real King Kong” Ortiz faces WBC Heavyweight World Champion Deontay Wilder Sábado, Marzo 3 en vivo por SHOWTIME a Barclays Center, la casa de BROOKLYN BOXEO ™, he will be looking to make history not just for Cuban boxing, but for all Hispanic or Latino fighters.
Ortiz has a chance to become the first Latino or Hispanic heavyweight world champion born outside of the U.S. and just the second heavyweight of Latino or Hispanic descent to capture the heavyweight world title. The first was Massachusetts’ John Ruiz, whose parents were Puerto Rican and who defeated Evander Holyfield for the WBA Heavyweight World Championship in March 2001.
“This fight is not only important for my family, but for Cuban boxing history,” dijo Ortiz. “My only focus right now is on the strategy I will need to defeat Wilder, but I know this fight has a lot of significance. I’m going to make history for myself and my country when I knock out Wilder on Marzo 3.”
Cuba has had three previous fighters vie for the heavyweight title, with Jorge Luis Gonzalez losing to Riddick Bowe in 1995 and Vitali Klitschko defeating both Juan Carlos Gomez in 2009 Odlanier Solis in 2011. Ortiz hopes to stake his claim to the upper echelon of Cuban heavyweight lore along with heavyweight Teofilo Stevenson, who won three Olympic gold medals and is considered the greatest Cuban fighter of all time, despite never fighting professionally.
The strong boxing tradition of Cuba has continued to this day, with Ortiz looking to become the 18º world titlist from the country. Prominent active Cuban fighters include WBA 154-pound champion Erislandy Lara, who fights Jarrett Hurd in a unification showdown Abril 7 por SHOWTIME, and two-division world champion Rances Barthelemy, who looks to become the first three-division champion in Cuban history Marzo 10 por SHOWTIME.
The history of Hispanic fighters vying for the heavyweight title dates back to the legendary matchup in 1923 between Jack Dempsey and Argentina’s Luis Firpo. The 11-year-old Smith, who recently spent NBA All-Star Weekend in Los Angeles taking part in various activities, will host a health and fitness presentation for the local community youth groups attending the workout before stepping in the ring with Wilder for a special photo opportunity. Kids in attendance will be from Gleason’s Give a Kid a Dream, BOXER Inc. and the Atlas Cops & Kids Program.
Smith has previously interviewed the likes of LeBron James, Stephen Curry, Usain Bolt and other top athletes and entertainers for Instagram and the “Ellen” show.
The open to the public event will being at approximately 3 p.m. Y with Smith’s health and fitness presentation, featuring unbeaten local light heavyweight contender Marcus Browne, set to take place before Wilder’s workout.
