Palicte split decisions Cantu in classic Gallimore stops Baez in 1st round

Aston Palicte (R) won a 10-round split decision over “Lil”” Oscar Cantu
LAS VEGAS (Rhagfyr 17, 2016) – Tonight’s final round of the 2016 “Knockout Night at the D” series ended in typical style as “Mighty” Aston Palicte won a 10-round split decision over previously undefeated “Lil'” Oscar Cantu in a terrific super flyweight match from start to finish inside the Downtown Las Vegas Center Digwyddiadau indoor facility.

The Palicte vs. Cantu main event, as expected, was a classic match-up of contrasting styles between a dangerous puncher (Palicte) and consummate boxer (Cantu). There was surprising non-stop action from the opening bell. Power punching Palicte (22-2, 18 Kos) pressed the action as the clear aggressor, but Cantu stood in the pocket, hefyd, as the technician used his defensive skills to make things difficult for his world rated Filipino opponent.

Galiimore (pictured above in green), who fights out of Chicago, dedicated the fight to his stablemate, y diweddar Ed Brown (20-0), who was murdered earlier this month. “I saw a tape of him (Baez) and knew he backed up to the ropes,” Gallimore explained the finish. “I practiced that shot in the gym and I’m very happy with the outcome. I told all my teammates back in Chicago that I was dedicating this fight to Ed Brown.”
Los Angeles junior middleweight Flavio Rodriguez (6-0, 5 Kos) kept his undefeated record intact against previously unbeaten Mexican fighter Dilan “El Tremendo” Loza(5-1, 3 Kos) in the television opener. Rodriguez, who one point during his 4 1/2-year hiatus from the ring weighed 90 pounds more than he entered the ring tonight, won by way of a third-round technical knockout. Loza was hurt by an accidental shot to the base of his head in the third and he was later dropped in the same round by the heavy-handed Rodriguez. Canolwr Jay Nady halted the bout after the third round.

“Ar gyfer y rhan fwyaf,” Rodriguez said, “he didn’t do anything different. I thought I controlled the fight with my jab. My boy, Lion (Santa Cruz, friends from LA), was a world champion and I want to get to his level.”

RJJ-promoted fighters, junior lightweight Randy “Y Matador” Moreno (8-0, 7 Kos) ac Pwysau Bantam Max “The Baby-Faced Assassin” Ornelas (7-0, 3 Kos), were both successfully showcased on the undercard.
Fast moving Moreno won his eighth fight in nine months, rhoi'r gorau i “Arian” Mike Fowler (5-4, 2 Kos) yn y bedwaredd rownd. Moreno improves each fight, showing incredible poise for a 21-year old boxer, and he legitimately rates as a national prospect to watch.

Ornelas dropped Jorge Perez (6-5-1, 3 Kos) in the second round on his way to a shutout decision over four rounds. The 18-year-old Ornelas recorded the seventh win of his 6-month pro career.

Cantu vs. Palicte will be contested for two belts as Cantu defends his North American Boxing Federation (NABF) super flyweight championship, in addition to the vacant World Boxing Organization (WBO) Inter-Continental super flyweight title.
Rated No. 4 gan Gyngor Bocsio Byd (CLlC) as a flyweight, the 25-year-old Cantu (14-0, 1 KO) will face the toughest test of his 4+-years professional career in the heavy-handed Palcite, but he’s excited to be headlining this nationally televised show from Las Vegas.

Wilmington, DE (Rhagfyr 2, 2016) David Feldman Promotions will announce that former four-division champ and Boxing Legend Roy Jones, Jr. will square off against former world title challenger, and Bare-Knuckle Legend bobby Gunn ar Dydd Gwener, 17 Chwefror 2017 for the Vacant WBF World Cruiserweight Championship.

The fight will be announced at the official press conference on Dydd Mawrth, Rhagfyr 6, 2016 yn 2 PM at the Chase Center on the Riverfront, 815 Justison St, Wilmington, DE 19801.
In attendance will be Roy Jones, Jr, bobby Gunn, Promoter David Feldman, WBF Representative James Gibbs, undercard fighters Joe Tiberi, Henry Stewart, ac yn fwy.

During his twenty-seven year professional career, Jones Jr. (64-9, 46 Kos) has secured world titles in four different weight categories – Canol, Super Canol, Light Heavyweight and Heavyweight – and is the only boxer in history to start his career as a Light Middleweight and then go on to win a Heavyweight Championship.

In winning the WBA Heavyweight title by beating John Ruiz by unanimous decision in March 2003, Jones Jr. made history by becoming the first former middleweight champion to win a heavyweight title in 106 flynyddoedd.

Jones Jr. has victories over former world champions Bernard Hopkins, Antonio Tarver, Vinny Panzienza, James Toney, Mike McCallum, Virgil Hill, Felix Trinidad and John Ruiz.

Jones Jr. said of the bout, “I know Bobby Gunn is coming to bring it. He’s a hard-nose, tough fighter that comes right at you, but I’m going to show him why I’m one of the best that ever did it and he doesn’t belong in the ring with me.”

Ar Chwefror 17, Jones Jr’s opponent will be the former IBA Cruiserweight World Champion and the current Bare Knuckle Heavyweight Champion, Bobby “The Celtic Warrior” Gunn.

Gunn, internationally known for being a Bare-Knuckle legend, will put the gloves back on to battle ring legend Roy Jones, Jr.

Like Jones Jr, Gunn has a fearsome record in gloved boxing – 21 ennill (18 KO) 6 colledion, one draw, and one no-contest – and an even more impressive undefeated Bare Knuckle record of 72-0 gyda 72 KO).

Gunn has been in the ring with top fighters Enzo Maccarinelli, Glen Johnson, Tomasz Adamek, and James Toney, so he is no stranger to sharing the ring with boxing’s elite. “Iceman” John Scully’s 4th Official Amateur Boxing Reunion

This will be my 4th official amateur boxers reunion, with the first three having taken place in Las Vegas (Rhagfyr 2014), Dinas Efrog Newydd (Mehefin 2015) and Foxwoods Casino in Connecticut (Gorffennaf 2015).
Boxers who have attended previous reunions include the likes of four-time world champion Roy Jones Jr., three-time world champions Mike “The Body Snatcher” McCallum and Iran “The Blade” Barkley, WBO heavyweight champion Lamon Brewster, former WBC light heavyweight champion Montell “iâ” Griffin, 1988 U.S. Olympic coach Kenny Adams.
I’ve had this idea to bring my former amateur peers together for many years and in December of 2014 at the Rival Boxing Store in Las Vegas I finally had my first amateur boxers reunion and it was a tremendous success. Since then I’ve had two more (at Jimmy’s -Glenn- Corner on W. 44th St. in NYC and at Foxwoods Casino in Connecticut)successful gatherings that have seen everyone from local amateurs, regional Golden Gloves champions, National AAU champions, pencampwyr y byd, Olympians and every other possible level of amateur boxer.
I had originally planned to have boxers from my Olympic trials class (1988)gather for a reunion but changed it to any era or level. On that end we’ve had boxers ranging from 1976 A.A.U. National champion Bret Summers from Washington State and 1976 Jamaican Olympian Mike McCallum all the way up to 2004 U.S. Olympaidd Jason Estrada.
Basically it’s a chance for us to get together, reminisce, tell stories, see old friends, meet people we’ve never met before. Maybe the best example of what my reunions entail came at the 2015 event at Foxwoods when I had Hartford’s Luis Ortiz and Lawrence Clay-Bey meet for the very first time since they boxed each other as young kids at Marc Anthony’s in Hartford way back in 1977!

Before a sold-out crowd, Hernandez (12-4-1, 4 Kos) pounded world-rated middleweight Magomedov (17-1, 10 Kos), winning a unanimous 10-round decision (100-89 ddwywaith, 98-91) for the vacant USNBC middleweight title. Hernandez hurt Magomedov in the third and seventh rounds, finally dropping the tough Russian (WBA #2, WB) #3, WBA #5 and IBF #14) yn y 10fed.
“This fight changes everything for me,” Hernandez proclaimed. “He’s very good and deserves all of the accolades he’s received but I now have my head on straight and I’m focused. My jab was very important tonight. He’s very strong but I wanted to fight him inside because I knew he couldn’t take it from me. Oeddwn yn barod iawn. I think I may have broken my ankle in the fourth round but I kept going. I wanted to finish him, get the knockout, but he’s a very tough fighter. He has heart and showed why he has all of those accolades.”
Four weeks ago, Hernandez was preparing to fight as a cruiserweight. He lost 40 pounds to make weight for this middleweight fight in what turned out to be one of the biggest upsets of the year.

Southpaw super welterweights John “The Phenom” Vera (14-0, 9 Kos), of Fort Worth, and Phoenix’ Joey “Boxer” Ruelas (10-2-1, 4 Kos) went toe-to-toe from the opening bell and they never let up in the co-feature. Vera exploded in the round of this firestorm, battering the game Ruelas around, tan ganolwr Jay Nady halted the action in the sixth round. Vera remained undefeated and retained his NABA-USA title.
“I knew eventually he’d put his hands down and I’d catch him,” Vera explained. “I thank him for the opportunity to fight. He’s helluva fighter, I give him that, but I know I’m a warrior. I took some shots but gave ’em, hefyd. I broke him down and just kept throwing those lefts.”

In the TV opener, boxing prodigy Devin “The Dream” Haney (6-0, 4 Kos) made history as the 17-year-old – a junior in high school – became the youngest American professional boxer to fight on national television. Y Floyd Mayweather, Sr.-trained Haney, fighting out of Las Vegas in front of his rapidly growing fan-base, showcased his vast skills against previously undefeated Mexican invader Jairo “El Leon” Vargas (Fernandez), unloading 14 unanswered punches for a 4fed round technical knockout victory. Nady stopped the fight without counting when a badly hurt Vargas (4-1, 3 Kos) hit the deck hard.
“I happy that I put on a good performance for my fans,” Haney commented after the fight. “My team put together the strategy to use my jab and breakdown his body. I picked up my combinations did what I was told to do.”

In a battle of Texas junior welterweights, Tony Lopez (11-1, 4 Kos) dropped previously unbeaten Jerren “Hardknocks” Cochran (11-1-1, 4 Kos) twice with lefts in the opening round and finished him off in the second, knocking him out cold with a punishing right.
“Two mores seconds and I would have finished him off in the first,” Lopez remarked. “My corner told me that, after the lefts, come back with a right. They gave me the game plan and I executed.”

Yn yr ornest agoriadol, Las Vegas favorite Jeremy “J-Flash” Nichols (4-0, 2 Kos) dominated Puerto Rican welterweight Gorffennaf “El Indio” Santos (2-3, 1 KO) on his way to a win by unanimous 4-round decision.
“I know I could have done a little better, throwing more combinations and jab,” Nichols said. “He came in trying but he couldn’t fight. I sent him back to Puerto Rico with a loss.”
