Veteran Reporter Joins Former Play-By-Play Announcer Steve Albert As Sixth From SHOWTIME Sports® Od tej doby 2012 To Be Presented With Boxing’s Highest Honor

NEW YORK (Jún 11, 2018) – SHOWTIME Sports® veteran reporter Jim Gray was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame on Sunday in Canastota, New York, joining former colleague and longtime SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING play-by-play announcer Steve Albert in receiving boxing’s most prestigious honor.

 

 

 

Gray and Albert became the fifth and sixth SHOWTIME Sports talent enshrined in the Hall of Fame since 2012. They join boxing analyst Al Bernstein (2012), ring announcer Jimmy Lennon Jr. (2013), analyst and historian Steve Farhood (2017) and play-by-play announcer Barry Tompkins (2017).

 

 

 

In front of a large crowd that included close friends Mike Tyson, Don King, Deontay Wilder, Julius Irving, Jerry Richardson, Stedman Graham, Bob Costas and many others, the 59-year-old Southern California resident Gray reflected on 40-plus years of covering the sport of boxing. “My journey today has been an unlikely one,” Gray said during his induction speech. “The Boxing Hall of Fame immortalized all of these great fighters. So this magnificent honor comes with tremendous humility. How could this happen? I never took a punch.”

 

 

 

Gray, who started with SHOWTIME in 1994, was honored with a Special Individual Achievement Emmy Award – he currently has 12 Emmy’s in total – in 1997 for his interview of Mike Tyson following the heavyweight’s second loss to Evander Holyfield, the infamous “bite fight.” The National Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association also named that interview the “Sports Broadcast Story of the Year.” Ďalej, the American Sportscasters Association has voted Gray “Sportscaster of the Year” v 1998 and ‘99.

 

 

 

Gray chose Tyson to introduce him on Sunday during the induction ceremony. “It’s ironic,” said Gray. “The man who threatened to kill me in public is now inducting me into the Hall of Fame.”

 

 

 

“This award is way, way overdue,” an emotional Tyson said of his good friend. “I’m very proud of you. Well-deserved.”

 

 

 

With this past weekend’s induction ceremony, SHOWTIME Sports now boasts five current Hall of Famers featured on the network: Gray, Bernstein, Farhood, Tompkins and Lennon Jr.

Gray has forged one of the most memorable sports broadcasting careers in recent history, which includes a deep boxing resume. Albert called more than 300 fights during his tenure with SHOWTIME, including Julio Cesar Chavez vs. Greg Haugen in front of 130,000 fans at Azteca Stadium in Mexico City, Tyson-Holyfield I & II and the epic Corrales vs. Castillo series.

“Bojoval som v armáde s Rayom Mercerom, bodol Evandera Holyfielda v sparingu. Môj najlepší boj, hoci, bolelo ma najviac. Bol som taký ostrý proti bojovníkovi z Kronk Gymu, Vincent Boulware, pri mojej tretej obhajobe titulu majstra sveta v tom roku (1993). Boulware vyhral šesť z posledných siedmich zápasov so štyrmi knokautmi a práve som sa stával slušným menom, Ak ho porazím, Mal som bojovať s Tommym Hearnsom alebo Iranom Barkleym, ktorí sa obaja presúvali do krížovej váhy. Odohral som najlepší zápas v kariére, ale nedokázal som prinútiť žiadneho z ostatných majstrov sveta v krížovej váhe, aby so mnou bojoval. V nasledujúcich troch rokoch som mal len štyri zápasy. Prešiel som do ťažkej váhy, pretože tí istí chlapci, ktorých som porazil, keď boli mojim povinným vyzývateľom (Uriah Grant & Nate Miller) sa prepracovali späť do povinnej pozície.”

Po opätovnej licencii Joe bojoval sedemkrát, ale bol bohužiaľ obmedzený, pokiaľ ide o to, kde mohol bojovať, a už nikdy nezískal vznešené postavenie, ktoré mal kedysi. Okrem Jirov, Mesi porazil významné osobnosti ako Monte Barrett, DeVarryl Williamson a Jorge Luis Gonzalez.

 

 

 

“To je skvelý čas pre mňa,” Mesi komentoval svoje nadchádzajúce uvedenie. “Som pokorný a poctený, že môžem ísť do rovnakej siene slávy s veľkými menami, ktoré tam už sú. Momentálne to všetko nasávam.

 

 

 

“Bol som trochu odstránený z boxu, ale len obchodný koniec. Stále som veľkým fanúšikom boxu a sledujem tento šport. Dnes, Som ženatý, mám tri deti a živím sa predajom zdravotníckych pomôcok. Box je stále mojou vášňou, moja láska, a odkedy som dostal hovor (že ide na NYSBHOF), Premýšľal som o všetkých spomienkach. Chcel by som urobiť viac televíznych hlášok v boxe a, možno raz, pustiť sa do propagácie. Naozaj sa teším na slávnostné uvedenie do Siene slávy v štáte New York.”

David Benavidez is a Mexican-American professional boxer. He has held the WBC Super middleweight title since September 8, 2017 by defeating Ronald Gavril in Las Vegas. David also became the youngest champion in Super middleweight history at the age of 20. He is trained by his Father José Benavidez sr., and he’s also the brother of former world lightweight WBA champion and current top welterweight champion José Benavidez.
About José Benavidez
José Luis Benavidez is a Mexican-American professional boxer and the former WBA lightweight champion. He is currently undefeated with a record of 25 wins and presently competing at the welterweight division. He is the son of boxing trainer José Benavidez Sr. of Arcelia, Bojovník, Mexiko, and the Brother of current WBC Super Middleweight Champion David Benavidez. In the late summer of 2016, José was shot in the leg by an unknown assailant while walking his dog in Arizona. The severity of the injuries sustained to his leg left doubt on his professional career. WORCESTER, Hmota. (Február 11, 2018) – Undefeated prospect richard “Pepek Námorník Man” Rivera zakončená Kevin “The New England Bully” Cobbs v treťom kole, punctuating the night with an lethal uppercut that landed right on the button, headlining last night’s “Nová Anglicko je Future 5” karta, predložila Rivera Promotions Entertainment, The Palladium vo Worcesteri, Massachusetts.

The 27-year-old Rivera (6-0, 5 KO) fought once again in front of his large, traveling fanbase from Hartford, CT, capturing the vacant Universal Boxing Federation (UBF) light heavyweight title in dramatic fashion. The charismatic Hartford boxer ended his third consecutive match with what has become his trademark right-uppercut.

Rivera used his strength, energy and determined will to defeat South Boston’s Cobbs (10-3, 4 KO), whose previous fight had been more than a year ago, when he was stopped in the second round by now world champion David Benavidez.

In only his sixth pro fight, the key question going into the bout was whether Rivera was ready to effectively step up in class to face a more experienced Cobbs. Right from the opening bell, the answer was a resounding, áno, as Rivera pounded Cobbs with powerful shots to the body and head.

Cobbs was dropped three times in the third round, one was ruled a push, and the end came when referee Jackie Morrell halted the action at the 2:51 as a reeling Cobbs was blasted backwards from the Rivera’s previously mentioned uppercut.

Junior welterweight prospect Wilfredo “Sucaro” pohan (4-0, 2 KO) floored veteran Bryan “Tehla” Abraham (6-29-2, 6 KO) with a sweet right-left combination at the end of the opening round. V druhom kole, pohan, of Southbridge, MA., drilled Abraham who went flying across the ring and into the ropes as referee Jackie Morrell halted the bout.

Bridgeport, CT welterweight Joe Goss (1-0) turned in an impressive pro debut, dropping Montreal’s Samuel Vasquez (1-3, 1 KO) in the second round on his way to a four-round unanimous decision.

Puerto Rican junior lightweight Luis “Lobito” Rivera (4-3, 1 KO) overcame a nasty cut over his eye to win a hard-fought four-round majority decision over Carlos Marrero, III (0-2), Bridgeport, CT, in a non-stop action fight to the finish.

Unbeaten Springfield, MA light heavyweight Lúč “pancierová päsť” Graceski (5-0-1, 3 KO) and International Muay Thai fighter, Harford’s pro boxing debuting Pawel Banasiak (0-1-0), fought to a four-round draw in an entertaining brawl.

Puerto Rican super middleweight Jela Garcia (7-0, 6 KO), fighting out of Lynn, MA., remained undefeated but Nathan Schulte (0-5), of Woburn, MA, extended him the full distance for first time as a pro en route to a four-round unanimous decision.
