USA Boxing Announces Rosters for USA vs. IRL Northeast Boxing Tour

(מאַרץ 7, 2018) — USA Boxing announced today the tentative rosters for the three-city USA vs. IRL Northeast Boxing Tour that is kicking offמאַרץ 12 ביי באָסטאָן ס רויאַל ובידור קאָמפּלעקס. All three stops will showcase top USA boxers that have won numerous international medals.
Boston’s stop, which is presented by Budweiser, will feature three World Championship medalists, אַרייַנגערעכנט 2017 Elite World Championship bronze medalist Troy Isley (Alexandra, וואַ.), who just earned a silver at the 2018 Strandja Tournament in Sofia, Bulgaria last month, ווי געזונט ווי 2016 Youth World Champions Delante Johnson (קליוולאַנד, אָהיאָ) און 2016 Youth World Championship bronze medalist Richard Torrez (Tulare, קאַליף.). Headlining the women is Virginia Fuchs (Kemah, טעקסאַס), who won four international gold medals in 2017 and began her 2018 with a bronze at the Strandja Tournament.
Team USA’s second dual at Springfield’s MassMutal Center on מאַרץ 15 will be headlined once again Isley and Johnson, as well as their 2017 World Championship teammate Quinton Randall (Humble, טעקסאַס) will join them on this leg of the tour, צוזאמען מיט 2017 National Champion and Continental Championship silver medalist Oshae Jones (Toledo, אָהיאָ). Dean Fay, the Central City Boxing and Barbell Gym Founder & דירעקטאָר, has helped develop the Western New England Golden Gloves franchise into the preeminent power in the six-state region, capturing numerous individual All-New England titles and five consecutive team championships.

From a storied past at the nearby Holyoke Boys & Girls Club, Dean and his young boxers have a new home at MassMutual Center in Springfield, which will host the second stop of the USA Boxing USA vs. Ireland Northeast Boxing Tour on דאָנערשטיק, מאַרץ 15. Fay is a Springfield police officer who started his program 10 יאר צוריק, last year moving into Central City Boxing and Barbell Gym, primarily to keep kids off the street, teaching them values to become productive citizens.
“Our program, ערשטער, is youth development and second, באָקסינג,” Fay explained. “We use boxing as a vehicle for valuable teaching lessons, embodying the same values of boxing: competition, cohesiveness and integrity. Springfield has had a long history in boxing. The Golden Gloves were held in Holyoke, one city over from Springfield, פֿאַר 50 years before coming here. Golden Gloves has funded a lot of small gyms because many of these kids can’t afford fees. We’ve bridged the gap by hosting shows that raises money and creates fanbases.

“I was fortunate to be part of USA Boxing,” Rivera said. “Gaining experience in amateur boxing helped mold me as a person and give me confidence to pursue my dream of becoming world champion as a professional. I started boxing in Springfield when I was 15, before moving to Worcester (מאַ), becoming part of Carlo Garcia‘s growing stable of national and regional champions.”

“Granite Chin is excited to be back in New Hampshire,” co-promoter Chuck Shearns האט. “The town of Derry and the local businesses have already started to support the event. We are looking forward to having professional boxing in the area. Some of the fighters on the show gave us some great fights last time around and we certainly expect more on this show.”

New England cruiserweight champion Chris Traietti, an Iraq War veteran from Quincy, מאַ, will headline the event in a non-title, eight-round co-featured event. Traietti is also the co-promoter of “Fight Night at The Zone.”
Dorchester, MA lightweight Gabriel Duluc (11-2, 3 קאָס) will be showcased in an eight-round fight. (פעברואַר 26, 2018) – One of boxing’s most beloved boxer of all-time, “איריש” מיקקי וואַרד, and the Irishman best known for knocking out legendary מייק טיסאָן into retirement, קעווין “The Clones Colossus” McBride, have been selected as honorary team captains, ריספּעקטיוולי, of Team USA and Team Ireland for the first leg of the three-city 2018 USA ווס. אירלאנד נאָרטהעאַסט באָקסינג טור.
The tour commences מאָנטיק, מאַרץ 12, at the newly renovated Royale Entertainment Complex in Boston’s famed theater district. The Boston stop, which is being presented by Budweiser, have general admission tickets for $20.00 and a limited amount of $30.00 reserved tickets on sale and are available to purchase online here.
קעסטקינד, 52, is the pride of Lowell, מאַססאַטשוסעטץ, where he is a living legend. A three-time New England Golden Gloves champion as an amateur boxer, Ward fought professionally between 1985-2003, registering a 38-13 (27 קאָס) record as a junior welterweight throughout his pro career. He is best known for his epic trilogy with the late אַרטוראָ גאַטטי, in which he became the first fighter with double-digit losses to earn a $1-million purse (צוויי מאָל).
An all-action, crowed-pleasing fighter, Ward was involved in three Fight of the Year honors, the first and third of the Gatti trilogy, along with a memorable match with Emanuel Augustus. Ward was the winner in two (first Gatti and Augustus) of those classic fights.
Boston-native Mark Wahlberg portrayed Ward in, The Fighter, a movie about Micky’s life that won two Academy Awards.
“To be honorary captain of Team USA means a lot to me,” Ward said. “It’s great having elite amateur boxing back in Boston with the national teams from the United States and Ireland. It’s especially exciting for me as an Irish-American.”
The 44-year-old McBride was born in Clones, ירעלאַנד. ער איז געווען אַ מיטגליד פון דער 1992 Ireland Olympic Boxing Team at the age of 19, competing in the Olympic Games in Barcelona, ספּאַין. “I feel good about being honorary captain of Team Ireland,” remarked the still thickly Irish-brogue McBride, who still lives with his family in Dorchester. “I’m honored to be carrying the Irish flag for these fighters. I’m not sure how many of them remember me as the man who beat Tyson. I know some of the Irish coaches and I still support boxing in Ireland as well as America. I just love boxing. And it’s always a pleasure to be with my friend, מיקקי וואַרד. He’s a good lad.”

The USA Boxing Alumni Association gathering was also to promote the 2018 USA ווס. אירלאנד נאָרטהעאַסט באָקסינג טור, which kicks-off מאָנטיק, מאַרץ 12, at Royale Entertainment Complex in Boston’s famed theater district. The New England Tournament of Champions, also known as the All-New England’s, is part of the 72nd annual New England Golden Gloves Championships.
טאַנייט ס individual winning N.E. champions will qualify for Team New England, which will compete at the National Golden Gloves Championship, אָנהייב מייַ 14, 2018 in Omaha, נעבראסקא. Western New England is seeking its fifth straight N.E. team title.

א 1988 Ireland Olympian, Walsh coached the Irish Team from 2003 צו 2015, and he took over Team USA in 2015, capturing the AIBA’s World Coach of the Year the past two years.

“אין די סוף פון די טאָג,” the 54-year-old Walsh admitted, “it is an unusual situation for me. But I’ve been coaching here two years and Team USA is my team now. I didn’t come here for just a few years. When I eventually leave, Team USA will have developed continuity and a solid program.
“I am a true Irishman who developed through a system that won multiple titles and I was the Irish Team captain for five years. I’m helping develop strong relations between USA and Ireland that can help both programs. Ireland has been among the best of the world – amazing considering the geographical size of Ireland — with its fighters’ great hearts along with their technique and skill. There’s a lot of talent and resources in the states, but amateur boxers have been taught to develop skills more for professional boxing. Here there is a variety of different ethnic groups: Mexicans, African-American and Caucasians, צו. It’s truly a melting pot and each has a unique style of boxing. We are now providing coaching education for US programs to be sustainable long term.”

An International Boxing Hall of Famer, Sullivan won 38 פון 38 פּראָ פיגהץ, 30 coming by knockout, with only one loss and two draws.
Another Hall-of-Famer from that era, דזשייק קילראַין (29-5-8, 17 קאָס), lived in Somerville and Quincy, both Boston suburbs. Kilrain (1829-1899) also reigned as world heavyweight champion.
Irish boxers from Greater Boston continued this rich tradition through the end of the 19טה and beginning of the 20טה centuries with world champions and top contenders such as welterweight Paddy Duffy (31-3,16, 18 קאָס), Lawrence welterweight Mike Glover(Cavanaugh – 30-5-5, 16 קאָס), and Charlestown welterweight מייק “Twin” Sullivan(28-6-16, 17 קאָס), and Newton bantamweight Jimmy Walsh (33-10-20, 14 קאָס)
In the 1950’s, Woburn lightweight “איריש” Tommy Collins (61-12, 44 קאָס) was dropped 10 times at the Boston Garden by world champion Jimmy Carter, until he finally succumbed in the fourth round. His gutsy performance, אָבער, earned him an appearance on the popular Ed Sullivan Show.
Arlington heavyweight Tom McNeeley (37-14, 28 קאָס), unsuccessfully fought for the world title in 1961, stopped in the fourth round of his Toronto fight versus defending champion פלויד Patterson, and McNeeley’s son, Boston-native and later Medfield resident פעטרוס “הוראַגאַן” McNeeley (47-7, 30 קאָס) famously was stopped in the opening round by “ייַזן” מייק טיסאָן in the latter’s first fight after his release from prison.
In the 1980’s, Irish boxers made their way to Boston to fight; some returned home after their careers, others relocated in the area. אין 1984, ירעלאַנד-געבוירן Sean Mannion (42-14, 13 קאָס), who had moved to the Dorchester section of Boston, lost a 15-round decision in Madison Square Garden to מייק מקקאַללום for the World Boxing Association (וובאַ) Super Middleweight World Championship.

Collins’ younger brother, Packie Collins, also moved to Brockton to fight. He later worked with Irish heavyweight champion קעווין “The Clones Colossus” McBride (35-10-1, 29 קאָס), who went on to knock Tyson out and into retirement. McBride, who still lives in Dorchester, was a stablemate of former Team Ireland head coach and current Team USA head coach, בילי וואַלש, at the European Games. Both were also Ireland Olympians, ריספּעקטיוולי, אין 1988 און 1992.
Another Ireland Olympian, Wayne “Pocket Rocket” McCullough (27-7, 18 קאָס), moved to Las Vegas from Northern Ireland. The luck of the Irish wasn’t with him in Boston in 1997, when he lost his World Boxing Council (וובק) bantamweight title at Hynes Convention Center, by way of a 12-round split decision to דניאל זאַראַגאָוזאַ.
Arguably the most famous and popular Irish-American boxer, outside of Sullivan and דזשאַק דעמפּסי, is Lowell junior welterweight “איריש” מיקקי וואַרד (38-13, 27 קאָס), who was involved in three Fight of the Year award winners, two from his epic trilogy with אַרטוראָ גאַטטי, and the first boxer with more than 10 career losses to earn a $1-million purse. Ward’s life was portrayed by another Boston icon, actor Mark Wahlberg, in the award-winning movie, “The Fighter.”
Irish boxers are still coming to Boston to fight. Locally-based Murphys Boxing has promoted numerous shows in Boston featuring world-class boxers such as גערי “נאָגל” אָוסאַלאַוואַן and undefeated super bantamweight TJ “מאַכט” Doheny (18-0, 13 קאָס), as well as undefeated rising stars such as “Sting” Ray Mayotte and New England & Massachusetts heavyweight champion Niall Kennedy (10-0, 6 קאָס).
The Irish team will announce its boxers later this month after the conclusion of its National Championships.
