71st annual Lowell Sun Charities Golden Gloves Championship Central N.E. quarterfinals results from Lowell

LOWELL, Offeren. (Ionawr 27, 2017) – The red-hot action continued in last night’s quarterfinals round of the 71st annual Lowell Sun Charities Golden Gloves Championship of the Central New England (Lowell Fwyaf) division as men’s and women’s open and novice matches were held in front of another great and exceedingly loud crowd at historic Lowell Memorial Auditorium.
Judges were very busy as all 10 exciting bouts, including a Junior Olympic match and two non-tournament bouts, went the complete distance. Individual standouts included a pair of open division boxers, pwysau welter Michael Fontanez, of Nashua (N.H.), and Methuen (MA) Canol Yarmarco Guzman. A representative of Nashua, PAL, Fontanez is a slick, hard hitting southpaw who shutout, 5-0, a very tough Kenny Larson, of Salem (MA). Guzman, boxing out of Canal Street Gym, looked like a veteran boxer on his way to a 5-0 shutout win over Lowell’s Julien Baptiste.

LOWELL, Offeren. (Ionawr 21, 2017) – The preliminary round of the 71st annual Lowell Sun Charities Golden Gloves Championship concluded last night with 11 exciting Central New England (Lowell Fwyaf) men’s novice matches at historic Lowell Memorial Auditorium.

“We had our second straight awesome show,” Lloegr Newydd Menig Golden Cyfarwyddwr Gweithredol bobby Russo Dywedodd. “There was another great crowd of enthusiastic fans who loved the non-stop action. We switch to Dydd Iau night for this coming week’s quarterfinal round and continue every Dydd Iau night through February until we go Dydd Mercher ac Dydd Iau (Môr. 1 & 2) for the semifinals and final (open class) of the New England Tournament of Champions.”

New England Golden Gloves Championship OPEN CLASS FINALS RESULTS

LOWELL, Offeren. (Chwefror 26, 2016) – Western New England dominated the open class finals of the New England Tournament of Champions, part of the 70fed annual Lowell Sun Charities Golden Gloves Championship, winning seven of 10 matches last night at historic Lowell Memorial Auditorium.
The eight men’s individual open class winners earned spots on Team New England for the 2016 National Golden Gloves Championships, Mai 16-21, in Salt Lake City, Utah. Team New England includes two of the top ranked boxers in the country, pwysau trwm ysgafn Elvis Figueroa and light welterweight Jaime Ortiz Rodriguez (repeat NE champion), both members of N.E. open class team champion from Western NE. Burlington, MA pwysau plu Amanda Pavone captured her sixth NE. teitl.
“In the last 10 flynyddoedd,” explained New England Golden Gloves Executive Director bobby Russo, “we hadn’t been on a good run. Attendance dropped off a little each year. Last year’s horrible weather killed us. Eleni, er bod, the excitement was back and attendance was up 30-percent. There was a younger crowd and many novice boxers had good fan bases, which we need to build up every year. We had a lot of good fights and good boxers this year. Boxing is back in Lowell! We had a great season.
“Team New England will be very strong. We have a young team but many of these boxers have a lot of invaluable experience from Junior Olympics competition, from heavyweight on down. I think we have an impressive team that will do very well at The Nationals this year.”
Team champions were Western N.E. in the open class, Central N.E. in the novice class.

NOVICE CLASS FINALS RESULTS FROM LOWELL
LOWELL, Offeren. (Chwefror 19, 2016) – Fourteen 2016 New England Tournament of Champions winners were crowned last night in the novice class of 70fed annual Lowell Sun Charities Golden Gloves Championship at historic Lowell Memorial Auditorium.
Team Central produced the most individual winners with seven, followed by Team Western with five, and Team Central had two.
The unofficial fight of the night was between Salem, MA pwysau welter Kenny Larson (Team Central) and his Dorchester, MA gwrthwynebydd Jarrod LoMax (Team Southern), in which Larson won a three-round decision, 3-2.
Portland, ME bantamweight Christian Morales (Team Northern) continued his performance run in the tournament, winning a three-round decision, 5-0, over hometown Lowell favorite Marquis Fowler (Team Central) Morales’ impressive showings in the tournament will lead him into an open division spot in next week’s New Englands.
In a Central N.E. (Lowell Fwyaf) heavyweight final rematch, due to a round-time issue, Methuen’s Jesus Flores (Canal Street Bocsio) defeated Haverhill’s John Roche (Haverhill Downtown Boxing) by the same score as their original match in another thrilling, back-and-forth bout ending a in three-round decision (5-0). The crosstown rivalry between the two gyms and boxers led up to another compelling match with Flores qualifying for Dydd Mercher night’s open class semifinals of the New England Tournament of Champions.
The New England Tournament of Champions open class semifinals and finals will be held next Wednesday ac Dydd Iauevenings, yn y drefn honno, at Lowell Memorial Auditorium.
The Outstanding New England Boxer in the novice class will be presented to the winner Dydd Mercher hon night at the N.E. open semifinals.

LOWELL, Offeren. (Chwefror 11, 2016) – Team Central had the edge in last night’s novice class semifinals of the New England Tournament of Champions, part of the 70th annual Lowell Sun Charities Golden Gloves Championship, at Lowell Memorial Auditorium.
Team Central had five individual winners, followed by Team South and Team West with three victories and Team North had two. The novice class finals of the N.E. Tournament of Champions will be held Dydd Iau, Chwefror. 18 at Lowell Memorial Auditorium.
The Fight of the Night was the light heavyweight match of the novice class as Team South’s Henry Ventura (N. Dartmouth, MA) overcame two knockdowns to defeat Team North’s Tyler Jacques (St. Albans, VT) who was dropped once and also had a standing eight count, by way of a unanimous decision (5-0).
Three remaining Central New England (Lowell Fwyaf) open class final matches were also held last night. See all results below, as well as the remaining 2016 amserlen.

LOWELL, Offeren. (Chwefror 5, 2016) – Peter Welch’s Gym in South Boston dominated last night’s Central New England (Lowell Fwyaf) championship final round of the 70th annual Lowell Sun Charities Golden Gloves Championship, open and novice classes, at historic Lowell Memorial Auditorium.
Peter Welch’s Gym had seven winners last night: open – Hyde Park welterweight Jennifer Perella and Brookline light welterweight Abraham Nova; novice – Dorchester lightweightJonathen DePina a canol Brian Lawrence, East Boston lightweight Claire Duffy pwysau welter ysgafn, Boston light welterweight Katie Gregory and Franklin heavyweight Jared Gately.
Lowell West End Gym and Grealish Boston had the second-most winners last evening with two apiece.
Last night, 15 matches went the distance, including several upsets, along with one technical knockout and a two walkovers.
All CNE finals winners qualified to compete in the upcoming New England Tournament of Champions, also held at Lowell Memorial Auditorium, gan ddechrau next Thursday night with the semifinals of the novice division.
