GCP Signs Louisiana Lightweight Mason Menard to a Promotional Contract

Greg Cohen Promotions proudly announces the signing of lightweight “Rock Hard Mighty” Mason Menard to a promotional contract.

Menard (29-1, 21 KOs) from Rayne, Louisiana, started boxing at the age of eight and had 82 amateur fights. He took a Bronze Medal in the 2007 U.S. Nationals and participated in the 2008 Olympic Trials at 132 pounds before turning professional in 2007.

In the paid ranks, Menard has already captured the Louisiana State Lightweight Title, the All American UBO Lightweight Title, and the UBO World Lightweight Title.

“I believe I’ll be able to receive big opportunities because GCP does televised fights and that’s exactly what I need, for someone to get me seen nationwide/worldwide,” said a happy Menard about the deal. “I am very fortunate to have signed with GCP, it will give me the outlet I need to be seen, to become a boxing superstar. It was all in God’s timing!”

Cohen, who also handles murderous punching Ismael Barroso, Australian buzz saw Josh King, Ghana’s undefeated Rafael Mensah and Canadian sensation Tony Luis, says Menard will make a welcome addition to his stable of world-class lightweights.

“I like what I see in Mason Menard,” said Cohen. “I’m looking forward to working with him and his manager, Chad Broussard. So far in his career, Mason has been sensational fighting in his home state. We are going to introduce him to the rest of the world and help him become a world champion.”

The former middleweight champion will take on fellow Mexican brawler Marcos Reyes (33-2, 24 KOs) in his first fight with renowned trainer Robert Garcia in a 10-round super middleweight bout.

Douglas, 23, Odom, 22 and Lopez, 24, appeared on the Lub peb hlis ntuj 13ShoBox from Westbury, N.Y. Douglas, making his third start on the network, registered a sixth-round TKO over Thomas LaManna; Odom, in his second ShoBox start, scored a first-round TKO over AndrewHernandez; and Lopez won his ShoBox debut with a second-round knockout over Pablo Cruz.

 

“Part of the strength of Shobox is watching fighters develop after multiple viewings,’’ ShoBox expert analyst and boxing historian Steve Farhood Hais. “In the cases of Douglas, Odom and Lopez, they’re at different stages of their careers but we’ve seen them before and we’re anxious to see how they develop.

 

“Douglas seems the furthest along of the three, but he survived a roadblock when he drew with Michel Soro [an eight-rounder that was part of the 200th ShoBox telecast on July 25, 2014] and he’s rebounded strongly. He remains one of the most exciting prospects to watch.

 

“Odom is a legitimate puncher. In his last fight he erased the one blemish in his career and at 22 years old he’s in the infancy of what promises to be a top-level career.

 

“Lopez looked polished in his ShoBox debut and we’re all looking forward to seeing him grow.’’

 

Douglas was a top-notch amateur who made it to the 2011 U.S. Olympic Trials. He’s been extremely active since going pro in October 2012. He fought twice in 2012, nine times in ‘13 and six times in ‘14.

Douglas pitched a shutout in his 12th pro start, winning his ShoBoxdebut and knocking out one of his opponent’s teeth in an entertaining but one-sided eight-round decision over previously unbeaten Marquis Davis (8-0-2 going in) in January 2014. He’s won four in a row since boxing a 10-round draw with former world title challenger Soro (23-1-1 going in) on July 25, 2014, rau ShoBox.

 

An excellent boxer-puncher with good skills, movement and punching power, Douglas has gone the full 10-round distance one time, the full eight-round distance one time and six full rounds four times.

 

Wise beyond his years due to a tough upbringing, Douglas grew up in Washington D.C., the product of a broken home. He moved around various foster homes in his early years. “I come from a troubled childhood, born prematurely to a drug addicted mother,” he said. “They told my mom I wouldn’t grow to be a fully functional human, I wouldn’t be able to walk, talk, move or speak.’’

 

Douglas didn’t see much of his father, who flitted in and out of his life.

 

Szili, 32, is making his United States and ShoBox debut. A five-year-pro has fought the majority of his fights in Switzerland, Italy and Hungary. He captured the Universal Boxing Federation middleweight title with a sixth-round TKO over Mathias Zemski in his last fight on Aug. 30, 2014, in Switzerland.

 

A multiple medalist during a longtime amateur career (1997-2005), Szili turned pro in October 2009. A determined, well-conditioned sort who is best known for his left straight shot-right hook combination, he sums up his life in and out of the ring simply:

 

“What I do, I do it in 100 percent and I never give anything up,’’ he said.

 

Webster, 6-foot-4, 33-year-old, hails from a fighting family. His uncle,Tim Witherspoon, is a former heavyweight world champion and his cousin, Chazz Witherspoon, was a former heavyweight contender. This will be his debut on ShoBox.

 

A highly touted southpaw, Webster got a late start in boxing and had limited amateur experience. He won his pro debut on a four-round split decision in May 2009 before proceeding to build his career on devastating knockouts and a quick tongue. He’s always willing to hype himself and his fights.

 

Webster’s won two in a row by knockout, including a fifth-round TKO over William Johnson last Tej zaum 29.

 

Magomedov, 22, who recently signed with Kathy Duva’s Main Events, is ranked in the Top 10 tom 160 pounds by the WBA (Tsis yog. 2), WBO (Tsis yog. 6) and WBC (Tsis yog. 8). He’ll be appearing for the first time on ShoBox and this is his third consecutive bout fighting in the United States.

 

A pro since January 2013, he went 8-0 that year and 5-0 nyob rau hauv 2014. In his last outing, the steadily improving Magomedov registered one knockdown en route to a 2:37, first-round TKO over Darnell Boone rauTej zaum 22 in Las Vegas. Last Tim 2, he won his stateside debut with a lopsided eight-round decision over veteran Derrick Findley in Costa Mesa, Calif.

 

Lopez was born in Phoenix but grew up in Los Angeles. An aggressive counter-puncher trained by former two-time world champion Carlos “Famoso” Hernandez, he’s won two consecutive fights since dropping Cruz, unquestionably his toughest foe to date, two times in the second round of a match stopped without a count at 1:35 of the session.

 

This will be the fourth fight of the year and the second scheduled eight-rounder for Lopez, a top amateur before going pro in February 2012. In his last outing a four-fight knockout streak ended when he had to settle for a shutout six-round unanimous decision over Miguel Tamaya lastTej zaum 15.

 

“I’m more of a boxer, a counter-puncher,’’ Lopez said. “I make them miss and I make them pay. But I feel I’ve got good power. I can take a guy out with either hand. But I’m very economical. I don’t really waste punches. I like to make every punch count, and every punch that does count is going to hurt the guy.’’

 

Aquino makes for exciting fights; his slugfests with Jonathan Arias in February 2009 thiab Norberto Jimenez in May 2013 were candidates for Fight of the Year in the Dominican Republic. He’s also making his United States and ShoBox debut after campaigning exclusively in his native Dominican Republic since turning pro in February 2007.

 

A crowd favorite on the Caribbean island because of his Mike Tyson-like bobbing-and weaving attack style, the cocky, confident Aquino has won three in a row, all by knockout, since boxing to a fifth-round technical draw with Jimenez. Aquino’s last seven victories have all come inside the distance.

 

In his last start, Aquino retained his WBC Fecarbox 115-pound title with a third-round TKO over Racci Rosa on Sept. 27, 2014. Aquino was ahead 20-18 on all the scorecards when the bout ended at 1:35.

 

Odom, a top amateur and 2012 National Golden Gloves Champion at 178 pounds, is a big puncher who makes for exciting scraps. He had a 12-fight win streak end on Jan. 9, 2015, when he was disqualified in the fourth round for continuing to punch and land shots after he’d droppedHernandez with a flurry of punches. The crowd booed, but Hernandez was clearly down.

 

In the rematch on ShoBox, Odom hurt Hernandez early with a right behind the ear. He trapped Hernandez along the ropes, continued to land clean shots and the ref stepped in and stopped it at 2:47.

 

In his ShoBox debut, Odom recorded two knockdowns — in the fourth and seventh rounds — en route to stopping previously undefeated Vilier Quinonez (8-0 going in) in the seventh round on July 25, 2014.

 

Clarkson, a 24-year-old southpaw making his ShoBox debut, has won four straight and seven out of eight. He is 2-0 nyob rau hauv 2015. In his most recent fight he scored a sixth-round TKO over Jay Williams last Tim 3. Clarkson’s most noteworthy victory came two outings ago when he took an eight-round split decision over former world title challenger Cedrick Agnew last FEB. 20.

 

A two time Texas Golden Gloves State Champion at 175 Pounds and Police Athletic League National Champion at 175 pounds, Clarkson logged knockout victories in five of his first six fights after turning pro in August 2011.

Greg Cohen Promotions Signs Rob ‘Bravo’ Brant to a Promotional Contract

Greg Cohen of Greg Cohen Promotions proudly announces the signing of undefeated middleweight Rob “Bravo” Brant (15-0, 9 KOs) to a promotional contract.

24-year-old Brant, from Oakdale, Minnesota, started boxing in 2007 and by 2009 was already a national champion. He went on to become a member of the US National Boxing Team and win the 2010 National Golden Gloves, among many other distinctions, before turning professional in 2012.

Primarily a boxer, though possessing above-average power, Brant is a technician in the ring with a strong ability to improvise and adjust mid-fight. His strong conditioning allows him to push the pace and break his opponents down, mentally and physically.

You started boxing and quickly became a national champion. Tell me about discovering you were a natural in boxing. When did you realize it?

My father was a Division 1 collegiate football player. I grew up loving football, I won’t say I was stellar, but I got on the field. When I was 15, I started to dabble in boxing. Me and some friends, mainly football players, would meet up at our quarterback’s house to spar. His father, Bob Mitchell, used to be a boxer and would spar with us in the garage or the driveway. I loved every second of it. I found myself going to my friend’s house more and more, even when he wasn’t there, so I could box with his father.

When the weather stopped permitting this, I just had to put it in the back burners, but I realized that it was something I really wanted to do. I started researching boxing gyms and watching a lot of boxing. When I was 16 and got my driver’s license, I went to the White Bear Lake Boxing Club, where I was met with an 87-year-old man by the name of Emmitt Yanez, as well as Larry Goodman who was in his mid-70s. I would, for that entire summer of 2007, be the first person in the gym and the last one out. I attribute my success to those two men, for the next few years they took me to every tournament and every local show in the Midwest. I didn’t turn down a fight and they were willing to drive wherever whenever.

I guess I realized that I had talent when I won the US Men’s National Championship in 2009. Until then, I was always giving myself an excuse for why I had won the tournaments that I won and would focus on those I did not compete against, as opposed to the ones that I did. In the finals of the National Championships in 2009 I beat a man named Siju Shabazz whom in 2007 I watched win the National Golden Gloves on television. I remember thinking he was the epitome of talent. When they raised my arm, it did not set in until a few weeks later, when I realized I was the number one-ranked light heavyweight in the United States.

What made you want to start boxing?

I always loved watching every aspect of a boxing show. The entrance, the matching corner uniforms, the tension of two fighters standing in opposite corners knowing what they are about to have to do, and how once the bell rings, how they approach one another with confidence and caution. When I would go to my friend’s house and box his father, I figured it was something that I might be able to actually do one day and mentally, I committed myself until I could physically take myself to a boxing gym.

Why did you turn pro?

After a short but dense amateur career, I lost in the 2012 Olympic trials. I acquired enough experience to chase what most amateur boxers dream of: to become a professional world champion and have all that comes with it.

How did the deal with Greg Cohen come about?

Greg Cohen did a show boxing show in my home state of Minnesota at the Grand Casino Hinckley. I worked extremely hard in preparation for that particular competition because it was my nationally televised debut as a pro. I feel that I prepared enough and performed at the level that I should have in front of the GCP team. My hard work paid off, Mr. Cohen wanted to continue to work together.

What are your goals in boxing?

Of course, part of my main goal in boxing is to become a legitimate world champion in my division. But deeper than that, I would like to own a home and be debt free by the time I am retired from the sport. I want to make the money that I earned from boxing work for me.

Who is your trainer?

I train four to five weeks before competitions in Dallas, Texas. My head trainer is Derrick James. He was an accomplished amateur as well as an accomplished professional boxer who has trained fighters such as Errol Spence Jr and Anthony Mack, amongst others. My assistant trainer is Nathan Pipitone. Nathan always goes the extra mile for me. He will meet me at the gym at whatever time and solely wants the success of the athletes he works with, a class act. My cut man and my strength and conditioning coach is Jeremy Clark from my home state of Minnesota. He is a player development coach for the Los Angeles Kings hockey team. He pushes me to the next level, athleticism doesn’t impress him, hard work does, and that is what I need.

Where do you train?

I live in Saint Paul, Minnesota, where I do my heavy strength and conditioning with my coach Jeremy Clark at the Minnesota Top Team Gym he owns in Eagan, Minnesota. A month or so out from the fight, I head to Dallas to train with my coaches Derrick and Nathan to sharpen my technique and get the heavy sparring in. Although I constantly am working hard the hardest work is done in Dallas.

What’s next for you?

I will be completing Lub Xya hli ntuj 17 at the Sands Hotel and Casino in Bethlehem Pennsylvania on the non-televised portion of a talent-stacked ShoBox card. I am currently in Dallas preparing for that.

Do you do anything besides boxing?

I feel that when you truly and fully commit yourself to something you do not have a lot of time for other things. That being said, I do try to read as much as I can and I see a lot of movies as well as an avid Game of Thrones fan. The majority of people that I associate with socially are also in combative sports business, keeps me focused.

How did you get the name Bravo?

That is actually a funny story. I had coaches that used to call me ‘Robbo.’ In amateur boxing you see many of the same coaches year after year and lightly converse with them and get to know them through your amateur career.

It wasn’t until my last amateur tournament that I ever did (2012 USA national championship, bronze medal) that a coach from the Bay Area approached my personal coaches and asked where ‘Bravo’ was. My coach in confusion did not understand until said coach described me where he replied ‘Oh, you mean Robbo!’ For years, this coach had thought my name was Bravo when my coach told me the story I smiled and said “that’s it!”

I don’t feel you can give yourself a boxing name, nor have I ever, so it was meant to be that at my last amateur tournament somebody would give me my name.

Tell me something you want fans to know about you.

I love every aspect of boxing. I am not great at receiving the attention because I like being on level ground with everyone and at times I can be put on a pedestal which I do not overly enjoy. I like being regular. I am the most approachable person in the world I feel that everybody is equal. I just happen to have a job that people like to watch.

Derrick Webster Confident of Victory Heading into July 17 ShoBox Battle with Arif Magomedov

Undefeated southpaw Derrick “Take It to The Bank” Webster is not your typical fighter. He’s not your typical anything, really. But with his enormous size, fast, powerful hands and wealth of athletic ability, he just might be something special.

Actor, model, business owner, singer, basketball player, college graduate and a 6′ 4″ natural at the sweet science, Glassboro, New Jersey‘s Webster (19-0, 10KOs) now finds himself on the verge of possibly career-defining opportunity, as he will face also undefeated and highly touted Arif “Mayhem” Magomedov (15-0, 9 KOs) in a ShoBox quadrupleheader, scheduled for July 17 at the Sands Casino in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.

“It’s just another day at the office for me,” said a confident Webster of facing Magomedov. “I’m used to the bright lights. He (Magomedov) is just a straight forward fighter with no defense. If you stand in front of him, or any fighter really, it can be a dangerous night, but the one important thing I know about him is that he’s about to take a loss because he’s fighting Derrick “Take It To The Bank” Webster, the best southpaw around.”

Webster came late to boxing, not starting until age 24 when a gym opened up across the street from his house. He only had 40 amateur fights (38-2) and says the decision to forego a lengthy unpaid career and turn pro immediately came from an unlikely source.

“It was (former heavyweight champion and all-time great) Larry Holmes that sat me down and told me I already had the goods to make a name for myself and not to wait to turn pro. He was commentating a tournament I was fighting in, in Allentown, Pennsylvania, where I had four fights in the tournament and had four first-round knockouts. He told me a lot of guys ruin their careers and waste a lot time waiting for the Olympics, so I turned pro.”

Gifted athletically and intellectually, Webster was a quarterback in high school and played power forward for two seasons for the University of Maryland in basketball while earning a bachelor’s degree Juvenile Criminal Justice. Outside the ring he now owns home-remodeling and construction businesses, among his many business ventures.

While he may not have had much of an amateur background, Webster credits a couple factors for his ring success. First, he’s spent considerable time in training camps, serving as a sparring partner to many of boxing’s elite for the last six years including Roy Jones, Jr., Andre Ward, Jean Pascal, Bernard Hopkins, Amir Khan, Andre Dirrell and on and on. And second, the fact that his size and left-handed stance have made him a nightmare for opponents to face.

“I learned by sparring with the best in the business instead of in the amateur ring and now I’m unpredictable. I even surprise myself. I’m a hell of a boxer, and most guys my height can’t move like I can. My speed is amazing and I have power. I look at like this: I’ve been pro since 2009 and I’ve seldom known who I ‘m fighting because nobody wants to fight a 6’ 4″ southpaw. Most of my career I’ve gone in not knowing who I’m fighting until I got to the ring. That forced me to prepare for boxers and unorthodox guys and pressure guys and heavy-handed guys at the same time and made me an all-around fighter. I won’t say I’m the next Floyd Mayweather, but I want people someday to say they’re the next Derrick Webster. I want to be the best southpaw of this generation.”

The night’s card is being dubbed the Sully Huff Invitational, in memory of Stanley “Sully” Huff, a successful boxer from the Seneca Nation of Indians, who passed away in 2014 at the age of 84. Huff was a Courier-Express Golden Gloves champion in 1950 and later founded the Iroquois Boxing Club. He also served in the United States Army during the Korean War, earning the rank of Sergeant, and later was elected to serve on the Seneca Nation of Indians Tribal Council.

In the night’s televised 10-round main event, Canada’s popular, world-rated and fast-rising lightweight star Tony “xob laim” Luis (19-3, 7 KOs) will fight for a regional championship against an opponent TBA. This past weekend, Luis dropped a controversial decision to Derry Mathews in Liverpool, England (38-9-2, 20KOs), where the two battled for the interim WBA Lightweight title.

Before the highly debatable decision loss for the world championship in mid-April, the 27-year-old Tony Luis, from Cornwall, Ontario, pulled off a dominant 10-round unanimous-decision upset victory over then IBF #15 rated Karl “Dynamite” Dargan in January. Then on Lub ob hlis ntuj 20, he and fiancé Manon Latulippe welcomed the birth of their first child, a son named Miguel. Luis is rated #11 in the world by the WBA and #14 by the IBF.

30-year-old Dennis Hogan was a four-time national amateur champion with over 150 fights in his native Kildare, Ireland. He now lives and trains in Queensland, Australia. Hogan is the current NABA-US Super Welterweight Champion. In his four-year pro career, Hogan has also won the WBA Oceania Light Middleweight, Queensland State Super Middleweight, Queensland State Middleweight and Australian Middleweight Championships.

He has faced several undefeated and top contenders, scoring a late-2012 victory over heavily decorated veteran Dennis Laurente, which is still Laurente’s only loss in the last nine years.

Prior to boxing professionally, 26-year-old Jarrell Miller had a three-year, undefeated (18-0) kickboxing and MMA career. As a boxer, he was a New York Golden Gloves finalist and has worked as chief sparring partner for both Wladimir and Vitali Klitschko.

GCP Signs Fighting Serrano Sisters to Exclusive Promotional Contracts

Greg Cohen of Greg Cohen Promotions, in association with David Schuster’s Winner Take All Productions, proudly announces the signing of Brooklyn via Puerto Rico’s fighting Serrano sisters, Amanda and Cindy to exclusive promotional contracts.

The heavily decorated family duo made boxing history in 2013 when both sisters held Universal Boxing Federation titles in the same super featherweight division.

26-year-old southpaw Amanda “The Real Deal” Serrano (23-1-1, 18 KOs) is a former Staten Island amateur champion, New York City Golden Gloves amateur champion, and Empire State amateur champion. She turned professional in 2009 and has already won the NABF Featherweight, Universal Boxing Federation World Featherweight, Women’s International Boxing Association World Featherweight, IBF World Super Featherweight, Universal Boxing Federation Inter­Continental Super Featherweight, and WBO World Lightweight Championships.

Older sister, Cindy “Checkmate” Serrano (22-5-3, 10 KOs), fought to a draw for the Women’s International Boxing Association World Featherweight Championship in 2005 and has gone on to win the Women’s International Boxing Association International Lightweight, Universal Boxing Federation Super Featherweight International and Universal Boxing Federation Super Featherweight World Championships. The 32-year-old orthodox fighter turned professional in 2003 after winning the 2003 Empire State Games Tournament as an amateur. Cindy Serrano was unbeaten in her first 16 bouts as a professional.

Both Serrano sisters are currently ranked in world’s top ten at super featherweight: Amanda is #1 and Cindy is #8 and both work with dedicated, no nonsense trainer Jordan Maldonado, who has been a key catalyst to their success.

“These are two of the best female fighters to ever lace up the gloves,” said a happy Greg Cohen. “I am honored to be working with them and we’ve got big plans for them. They are a history-making fighting family and both sisters still have plenty of fight left in them. This is a huge acquisition for my company.”

Greg Cohen Promotions (GCP) announces a multi-fight deal with CBS Sports Network to telecast live professional boxing.

“Championship Boxing” will debut on CBS Sports Network on Tim 17 tom 10:00 PM, ET at the Grand Casino in Hinckley, Minnesota. In the 10-round main event, Ireland’s WBA #12- and IBF #11-rated “Nag xob nag cua” Dennis Hogan (20-0-1, 7 KOs) will face Philadelphia’s hard-punching Tyrone “Young Gun” Brunson (22-4-1, 21 KOs) for the WBA Oceana Championship.

In the 10-round televised co-feature, Canada’s world rated and fast-rising lightweight star Tony “xob laim” Luis (19-2, 7 KOs) will make the first defense of his WBC Continental Americas Championship.
