“We’re warriors up here. Devon is not going to like me much come Februari 17 and I know I won’t like him much. This is business, because I’m here for the victory.
“I’ve been counted out many times in this sport. I’m not going to take any shortcuts in training, I’m just going to keep listening to what my coach wants me to do so I can be at my best.
“Being on this stage is very significant for me. Thankfully I have people who don’t stop believing in me. I’ve seen both sides and been in the middle. Op dit punt, the only place I’m focused on going is up. It’s all in front of me.
“We have mutual respect for each other. He’s a tremendous fighter just like me. Everyone knows it will be two warriors stepping into the ring on Februari 17. We’re going to go all out. I’m going for a victory just like him.
“I’m going to keep coming forward until my hand is raised in victory. One day I will be the champion again and it starts Februari 17 in El Paso.”

“Both of us are very good, skillful boxers and that should make for a great matchup. Everyone knows we both come to fight and have been world champions so it’s going to be exciting on fight night.
“This is going to be an excellent fight. I’ve known Victor for a long time, but this is going to be business on Februari 17. I think I’m the best fighter in the world, and I have to go prove that.
“Boxing is what I love to do. This is what I was born to do. I’m so thankful to my coach, Kevin Cunningham, for sticking by me these last few years and helping get me back to this point.
“I’m excited about this fight and I know Victor is too. The fans in Texas are always fantastic and they should expect an action packed night. It’s an awesome feeling to be able to showcase my talent. This is what I’ve been working hard for.
“I’m an all-around good fighter and I think my speed and quickness will be the difference. No one can hit me when I’m at the top of my game.
“I don’t see this one going the distance. We’re both very hungry. We know that a loss puts us at the back of the line and neither of us can afford that.
“I’m really thankful to El Paso for hosting this fight. It’s going to be a great night and I’m happy to be the main event. Everyone should come out for a great show. It’s going to be lots of fire and fury. Victor and I are really coming to fight.”

“I’m looking forward to fighting close to home. Many of you know I was born here in El Paso and grew up right across the road in Las Cruces, New Mexico. To be here again is surreal and it’s even more special being on a great card like this.

Ortiz (32-6-2, 25 KO), a former 147-pound champion, has split time between boxing and acting throughout his recent career and brings a certain flare every time he steps into the ring. The 30-year-old native of Garden City, Kansas who now lives in Ventura, Californië, has faced some of the top names in the 147-pound division during his career. Ortiz won the welterweight title with unanimous decision victory over Andre Berto on April 16, 2011. Vijf maanden later he lost the title to Floyd Mayweather, Jr. door knock-out. Ortiz, 30, suffered a knockout loss to Andre Berto in 2016 on FOX and bounced back with a knockout victory over Saul Corral in his last fight on Juli 30 op FS1.
“I’m ready to give all I have to defeat Devon Alexander and get my crown back,” Said Ortiz. “My priority is to make a strong comeback and putting myself in a position to have my straps once again. Alexander (27-4, 14 KO) emerged on the scene with a unanimous decision victory over Randall Bailey for the welterweight title in 2012. He defended the title once before losing it to Shawn Porter in 2013. Sindsdien, the 30-year-old Alexander of St. Louis, Missouri has been on a mission to regain the title. After losing to Amir Khan and Aaron Martinez, Alexander suffered another setback when he sought treatment for an addiction to painkillers. Fully healthy for the first time in drie jaar, Alexander returned to the ring with a unanimous decision victory over Walter Castillo on FS1 on November. 21.
“I’m excited to get back in there against a fighter like Victor Ortiz,” zei Alexander. “We’ve known each other a long time but never fought in the amateurs, so this should be interesting. My speed, quickness and smarts will win me this fight. Victor checks out sometimes when he can’t hit you, so my skills will be the difference. I’m ready for any challenge that’s brought my way. Plant (16-0, 10 KO) won eight of his first nine fights by knockout, demonstrating power in both hands to go along with his boxing abilities. The 25-year-old climbed into the top ten of the 168-pound rankings with his last victory – a unanimous decision over Andrew Hernandez in Las Vegas on Zeven. 8. Medina represents a major step up for Plant and will give him an indication of just where the Ashland, Tennessee native stands in the division as he looks to become a mandatory challenger for the IBF title.
The 29-year-old Medina (38-8, 32 KO) has squared off against some of the toughest boxers in the division, including current champion David Benavidez and former champions James DeGale and Badou Jack. Fighting out of Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico lost by knockout to Benavidez on Mei 20, and bounced back with a knockout victory over Daniel Eduardo Yocupicio on Zeven. 1.
The FOX prime time broadcast will kick off a full night of boxing, leading into a doubleheader on SHOWTIME that features two-division world champion Danny Garcia versus Brandon Rios and 168-pound champion David Benavidez defending his title in a rematch against Ronald Gavril from Las Vegas.

Santa Cruz Stops Chris Avalos in Round Eight & Abner Mares Earns Technical Decision over Andres Gutierrez in Premier Boxing Champions on FOX & FOX Deportes Action from StubHub Center in Carson, Calif.
Former Champion Antonio DeMarco Shocks Previously Unbeaten Eddie Ramirez By Controversial First Round Stoppage

CARSON, CALIF. (Oktober 14, 2017) – Featherweight world champions Leo Santa Cruzen Abner Mares were both victorious in their Premier Boxing Champions on FOX and FOX Deportes fights Saturday night from StubHub Center in Carson, Calif. and officially set up a world championship rematch between the two popular southern California champions in early 2018.
“I want Abner Mares,” zei Santa Cruz. “I said if we both win; we’re going to fight. I’m ready to fight him in Los Angeles in the beginning of next year.”
“I’m a totally different fighter now since I started working with Robert Garcia,” zei Mares. “We’re going to keep showing that when we fight Leo Santa Cruz.”
In het main event, Santa Cruz (34-1-1, 19 KO) took care of business and defended his title by stopping Chris Avalos (27-6, 20 KO) in de achtste ronde.
“He was very tough and I was fighting the wrong fight,” zei Santa Cruz. “I wanted to please the fans and give them a brawl. Once my dad told me how I could stop him easily, I boxed him more and got the stoppage.”
Santa Cruz used his length effectively and set up his jab while firing straight right hands to Avalos’ hoofd. Avalos stayed tough, but was in trouble in round four when Santa Cruz connected with a left hook that stunned Avalos in the corner.
Avalos originally retreated but as Santa Cruz came forward he was forced to brawl through the remainder of the round and took a great deal of punishment. Always game, Avalos continued to fight back and landed punches as Santa Cruz attempted to walk down his opponent.
“I thought I had him in the fourth round,” zei Santa Cruz. “I gassed out a little bit but I got my air back later. I thought the ref was going to jump in during that round but he let him continue.”
Eindelijk, in de achtste ronde, after several more flurries of punishment, referee Thomas Taylor jumped in and stopped the bout 1:34 in de ronde. Although he was out landed 282-169, Avalos believed he could have continued in the fight.
“I’m very upset with the stoppage,” zei Avalos. “We were fighting the whole time. There was no reason to stop this fight. I wasn’t hurt like the referee thought. I want to fight for the title again.”
Het co-main event zag Moeders (31-2-1, 15 KO)make the first defense of his title by wearing down and eventually earning a technical decision over Andrés Gutiérrez (35-2-1, 25 KO).
Referee Jack Reiss called on the advice of the ringside physician midway through the 10thronde, who determined that Gutierrez was unable to continue due to a cut. Although the cut was originally opened by a punch, the commission determined that a series of accidental fouls caused the cut to worsen to the point that the fight was ended, and a final verdict would be decided by the scorecards.
Mares was sharp from the outset, using the jab to get to Gutierrez and teeing off with combinations. The right hand was a weapon all night long and in the second round he connected with the shot that opened up the cut under Gutierrez’s left eye.
“I told everyone that I was here to make a statement,” zei Mares. “I had a tough opponent and he showed how good he is. It took a lot of punches and a lot of big punches. It was just a matter of time before I stopped him.”
Gutierrez continued to put up a strong effort and never stopped throwing punches, using his jab to try to keep Mares at bay. Echter, as the cut worsened throughout the fight, Mares had an easier time landing thudding right hands to Gutierrez’s face.
“I didn’t feel like the fight should have been stopped,” zei Gutiérrez. “I was hurting him as much as he was hurting me. My cuts did not bother me. I want to fight him again or have another shot at the title. I was prepared to fight to the final bell.”
“I thought they could have stopped it earlier,” zei Mares. “He’s a young guy who was too brave for his own good. I was happy with the decision. I deserved the stoppage but I’m happy I got the win.”
It was the accumulation of punches that eventually forced the referee to stop the fight. At the time of the stoppage all three judges had the fight in favor of Mares, door scores van 100-90 en 99-91 tweemaal.
The opening bout of the telecast saw an action-packed opening round that ended in controversy as former world champion Antonio DeMarco (33-6-1, 24 KO)score a first round stoppage of previously unbeaten Eddie Ramirez (17-1, 11 KO) in their super lightweight affair.
The fighters disagreed on the decision to stop the fight by referee Gerard White to stop the fight.
“That stoppage was way too early,” said Ramirez. “I was not hurt. I was fighting back and I felt like I was recovering. I want an immediate rematch if possible.”
“I think it was a good decision from the referee,” zei DeMarco. “He was taking a lot of solid punches and I felt like I had him.”
Ramirez came out aggressive early and pushed DeMarco against the ropes, looking to punish him with combinations. Midway through the round however, DeMarco connected with a straight left hook that stunned Ramirez and sprung DeMarco onto the attack.
As DeMarco stalked Ramirez around the ring, he caught him in the corner and forced Ramirez’s knees to buckle. Ramirez was able to stay on his feet and appeared to be throwing back, but the referee jumped in and stopped the bout 1:56 in de eerste ronde.
“I’m very thankful to Ramirez for taking the fight,” zei DeMarco. “I think big things are coming for me. I’m going to talk to my team and see what is next. I think this performance will erase a lot of doubts about me.
“I’m an experienced fighter and I stayed patient. I had great preparation and waited for the right moment. I feel great right now.”

(September 25, 2017) – Undefeated rising junior welterweight contender Eddie Ramirez (17-0, 11 KO) will step up and take on former world champion Antonio DeMarco (32-6-1, 23 KO) in a 10-round match to open the television broadcast of the Premier Boxing Champions card on FOX and FOX Deportes on Zaterdag, Oktober. 14 van StubHub Center in Carson, Calif.

The 25-year-old Ramirez has made rapid progress this year in a 2017 that saw him jump from prospect to contender. He started the year with a rousing ninth-round TKO over then unbeaten Ryan Karl on Februari. 2 and followed that up with a victory over veteran Erick Bone in June. Fighting out of Aurora, Illinois, Ramirez won three times in 2016, including a knockout victory over then undefeated Kevin Watts.
“I’m trying to make a statement, and if I’m able to take him out, I’ll take him out,” said Ramirez. “But I’m also going to be smart at the same time. He’s a veteran southpaw and a former champion, but his time is up and my time is now. So we’re prepared for whatever comes our way. I’ll do whatever it takes to win. I’ve been in a lot of tough fights, but they’ve all been worth it to get me prepared to become a world champion. I’ve been sparring with some big, tough guys and I’m ready to take on another one to get up there with the top fighters in the division.”
The 31-year-old DeMarco of Tijuana, Mexico has an outstanding resume, which includes matches against Adrien Broner, Rances Barthelemy, Omar Figueroa, Jr., and Jessie Vargas. DeMarco won the lightweight world championship with a TKO victory over Jorge Linares in 2011 and successfully defended it twice before losing it to Broner in 2012. Most recently DeMarco won a unanimous decision over Luis Solis in their 10-round bout in February.
“This is a very important fight at this point for my career,” DeMarco zei. “I’m going to prove that I still have a lot to give in this sport and this wide-open division. Ramirez is a young, undefeated fighter and a very tough opponent, but I’ve been in a lot of big fights and as a former champion, I definitely believe that he has never faced an experienced southpaw opponent like me. I’ll wear him down, round-by-round and if the knockout presents itself, I’ll definitely go for it.

“I know he’s a dangerous fighter, but I’m very calm and confident because of the experience I’ve gained and the camp I’m having. I know the truth about myself, and emotionally and physically, Ik ben 100 percent.”

“Nu krijgen we allebei eerst nog een gevecht, Ik ben er vrij zeker van dat we allebei zullen winnen en dat de fans zullen winnen door ons ook weer te zien.
“Ik train altijd op dezelfde manier. Ik train heel hard. Ik ga erop uit alsof ik tegen de best mogelijke tegenstander ga vechten. Mijn focus ligt daar. Je kunt nooit een vechter onderschatten. Vooral iemand als Avalos. Hij heeft niets te verliezen en alles te winnen door mij te verslaan.
“Dergelijke strijders zijn het gevaarlijkst. Ze zijn echt voorbereid en ik kan het me niet veroorloven om te verliezen. Ik ga gefocust binnenkomen Oktober 14.
“Als we allebei winnen, Ik wil de rematch met Abner begin dit jaar. Dat gaat gebeuren, dus ik maak me er geen zorgen over dat we allebei eerst ruzie krijgen.
“Ik voel me geweldig en zal klaar zijn om te vechten 12 harde rondes aan Oktober 14.
“Ik weet dat dit een zware strijd zal worden, elk gevecht op dit niveau is een zwaar gevecht.
“Ik kom uit twee zware gevechten en ik wilde dat mijn lichaam rustte, maar ik ben altijd klaar om naar de sportschool te gaan en me voor te bereiden om mijn best te doen. Ik zal een gevecht nooit lichtvaardig opnemen en ik zal niet doorgaan Oktober 14.
“De herkansing zal net als de eerste een zeer zwaar gevecht worden, het is beter voor Abner en mij
voor elk een gevecht tussendoor.”

“Ik ben erg opgewonden om in Zuid-Californië te vechten tijdens een grote show tegen een stoere vechter. Ik ben klaar voor 14 oktober.
“Dit is mijn derde vechttraining bij de familie Santa Cruz en ik train graag met hen. Ze hebben mij veel geleerd over verdedigen en over het gooien van combinaties. Ik heb het gevoel dat het meer een ‘Mexicaanse stijl’ is’ voor mij. Ik heb het gevoel dat ze me hebben geholpen een leukere vechter te worden.
“Dit is voor mij echt een dubbel thuisstadgevecht. Ik heb acht jaar in Zuid-Californië gewoond en ik heb veel op Leo's kaarten gestaan, dus ik zal met mijn tweede gezin in mijn tweede huis zijn.”

“Avalos is een zeer stoere vechter, als we tegen Mares vechten, willen we eerst een zwaar gevecht om ons voor te bereiden.”
