WASHINGTON, D.C. (April 20, 2016) – Austin Trout (30-2, 17 KOs), the former super welterweight world champion, is ready to collect his second world title on Saturday, May 21 when he meets IBF Junior Middleweight world champion Jermall Charlo in a 12-round match live on SHOWTIME (10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT) from The Chelsea, a one-of-a-kind 40,000-square-foot venue inside The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas.

 

“It’s my time,” said Trout. “My focus is amplified 10-fold.  I’m the confident, happy Austin that fans know, but trust me, when it’s fight time I’m ready for any dogfight that comes. You’ll see Austin bring out and defeat the ‘Lion’ in him because at the end of the day I’m taking that belt.”

Born in El Paso, Texas and raised in Las Cruces, New Mexico, Trout is trained by Barry Hunter and Louie Burke of Headbangers Gym in Washington D.C. Having started boxing at the age of 10, his natural talent and the ability to grow into the sport took Austin across the United States and Latin America in the amateur divisions and then into the pros. Known as one of the fiercest gentlemen competitors in the sport, he beat the likes of Miguel Cotto, Rigoberto Alvarez and Delvin Rodriguez, before losing his title to Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez. Trout comes into May 21 looking to claim a title in a division he’s been a true threat within for his career.

 

You’ve said you’ve been led to this fight, why is it important?

“Coming off of four consecutive wins, I’m not just on a comeback streak but I’m taking a full step forward. Charlo is the champ, this fight is about no more half stepping. It’s about taking on the best. Isn’t that what it’s about, being the best?”

 

How is camp going?

“I physically feel great. I’m really comfortable with Barry, it’s my fourth camp with the Headbangers team; Luis is there as well.  Luis helps me with pre-camp and then I shift to D.C.

 

“I was already in D.C. getting camp started when the rumors about this fight came true. I had been at the gym at home for pre-camp for a month and a half before hitting D.C. I was working out five times a week, running every day just getting the program going. As I said, no half-stepping. I’m already sparring, doing the work, getting right. I’m not walking through it but running and trotting through it. I’m 30, I’m at my physical peak, my talent couldn’t be any better.”

 

Talk about the fight and what to expect?

“Neither one of us is going out without a fight, so I don’t see this being a boring fight. It’s time for people to remember me. I’ve earned this championship shot against an undefeated bull like Jermall Charlo but I will take his belt. “

 

Your first professional loss was against ‘Canelo’ Alvarez in San Antonio in 2013.  What are your thoughts on that fight?

 

“I had a good, competitive fight with Saul – it felt like a unification bout – I was WBA champion and he was WBC champion. The open scoring was more detrimental to my game plan thea the judges! During the fight when I was told that I wasn’t winning on anyone’s cards I had to change my game plan.  It was a dogfight.  Canelo never had to box and move that much before in a fight.

“But, live and learn. Instead of walking into a fight like that I listened to those around me. No more surprises. This Charlo fight is a fight I want, a fight my team wants and we’re ready. I’m a more mature, focused champion who’s coming back. I’m dangerous – I have experience, talent and God on my side.”

The 25-year-old Charlos are aiming for history against stiff opposition from a former champion in Trout and the Olympian from the Virgin Islands in Jackson.

The 32-year-old Lara is a slick boxer with the ability to deliver punishment while taking very little of it in return.  Lara has notched victories over Alfredo Angulo, Austin Trout, Ishe Smith and Freddy Hernandez. As an amateur, Lara won numerous titles including a national championship at welterweight and also participated in the 2007 Pan-Am games. The fighter originally from Guantanamo, Cuba dominated Delvin Rodriguez in June of last year and followed that up with a third-round stoppage of former champion Jan Zaveck.
Born in Armenia, but fighting out of Glendale, Calif., Martirosyan represented the U.S. at the 2004 Olympics. As a professional, he won his first 32 fights before fighting Lara to a draw in 2012. The 29-year-old suffered a narrow defeat by split decision in his first world title shot against Demetrius Andrade, but has rebounded with solid victories over Mario Lozano, Willie Nelson and most recently Ishe Smith.
A newly crowned champion at 25-years-old, Charlo grabbed his title with a dominant third-round stoppage of Cornelius Bundrage in September 2015. Residing in Houston, Charlo built up his resume in 2014 with dominant triumphs over Hector Munoz, Norberto Gonzale, Lenny Bottai and Michael Finney. In his most recent outing, he successfully defended his title with a fourth-round stoppage of Wilky Campfort in November.
In 2004, Trout won the U.S. National Amateur welterweight championship and after climbing up the ranks as an elite pro boxer, he won a super welterweight world championship in 2011 by defeating Rigoberto Alvarez. He went on to make four successful defenses, including a career-best, dominant victory over Miguel Cotto in New York. He is currently on a four-fight win streak after knocking out Joey Hernandez in September to set up his world title opportunity.
Younger-by-one-minute than Jermall, Jermell Charlo is a highly ranked young fighter looking to get one step closer to a world title shot. A tall fighter for his division, the 25-year-old earned his shot at a world title with victories over Gabriel Rosado, Charlie Ota and Mario Lozano in 2014 and Martirosyan and former world champion Joachim Alcine in 2015. He impressed last time out by disposing of Alcine in the sixth-round of their fight in Houston in October.
Since representing his native Virgin Islands in the 2008 Olympics, Jackson has put together an impressive pro career. The St. Thomas-born fighter won his initial 13 fights after making his debut in January 2009. The 27-year-old earned the No. 1 spot and the title shot with a shutout victory over Dennis Laurente in August. Jackson comes from a fighting family; his father Julian Jackson was a world champion and feared power-puncher while his brother, Julius, is a contender in the 168-pound weight class.

MIAMI (November 25, 2015) – Super welterweight world champion and Cuban sensationErislandy “The American Dream” Lara (22-2-2, 13 KOs) successfully defended his title against former world champion and Slovenian Jan Zaveck (35-4, 19 KOs) in a Premier Boxing Champions on ESPN show from Miami’s Hialeah Park Racing & Casino.
Due to weather in the area, the main event was moved up to ensure the fight happened. From the opening bell, Lara controlled the action by landing heavy blows. In the third round, the ref stopped the action with Zaveck against the ropes, unable to continue. The ref called a stop to the fight at :41 into the third round.
In the second televised fight of the evening, Puerto Rican undefeated bantamweight prospect Emmanuel Rodriguez (14-0, 10 KOs) dealt a seventh round knockout toElicer Aquino (17-2-1, 11 KOs) from the Dominican Republic.
In a contest that saw great action out of both corners, Rodriguez ultimately proved to be too much for Aquino. The official stopped the fight at 2:44 into the seventh round.
Here is what the televised fighters had to say about their performances tonight:
ERISLANDY LARA
“I think I handled the pressure well tonight. I stayed in the pocket and fought my fight. This was a great win for me. (Zaveck) is a former champion and he’s never been knocked out until tonight.
“I’m very happy to be back fighting in the Miami area. This is my first time fighting back here since 2009 and I’m glad I was able to put on a good show for the fans. I’m very thankful for the way they showed up to support me tonight.
“I hit (Zaveck) with a great shot to the chin and froze his whole body. He was complaining about pain in his ear and his leg, but the bottom line is I got the win.
“I’ll face anyone they want to put in front of me at 154 lbs, unless it’s Canelo (Alavarez) or (Miguel) Cotto. Then we’ll go up to 160 lbs.”
JAN ZAVECK
“I currently have a sharp pain going from my neck to my shoulder on the right side.
“I knew I could try to fight on and land a lucky punch, but that was a small possibility and it was probably better to stop and fight another day.
“I felt good in there before that. I tried to surprise him by fighting him in close, but I was taking too many punches and he has very good power.
“I have never been injured like this before. It is very strange. The pain is surging.”
EMMANUEL RODRIGUEZ
“As the fight started I could tell Aquino was a strong fighter, but once I started boxing him I knew I could end the fight in the later rounds.
“The plan was to take him into deep waters and make it a long fight. In the seventh round my corner told me to end it and I listened.
“I agree with the stoppage. He was taking too much punishment in there.
“Being a part of a PBC card on ESPN helps take my career to the next level. I’m grateful for this opportunity.
“I’ll fight whoever my promoter and manager tell me to. I’m ready for anyone.”
ELICER AQUINO
“(Rodriguez) was better tonight. It’s nothing more complicated than that. He was a better fighter than me. I take nothing away from him.
“I was never hurt during the fight. He was strong, but I held my ground and was never in trouble. I hit him with some good shots too. He just landed more than I did. That’s my fault.
“I wasn’t frustrated. I just ran into a great fighter and tonight was his night. I will be back. It’s just one fight and a lesson learned.”

Televised coverage begins at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT and is headlined by super welterweight world champion Erislandy “The American Dream” Lara (21-2-2, 12 KOs) defending his title against former world champion Jan Zaveck (35-3, 19 KOs).

Undercard action continues with a pair of 10-round contests as Daquan Arnett (14-1, 8 KOs) takes on Yudel Jhonson (17-2, 9 KOs) in a super welterweight showdown while undefeated heavyweight Wes Nofire (18-0, 14 KOs) goes up against Cuba’s Yasmany Consuegra (17-2, 14 KOs).
Also entering the ring, in an eight-round lightweight contest, is 23-year-old Brooklyn-native Dennis Galarza (10-1, 7 KOs) who takes on 27-year-old Mexican brawler Hugo Partida (26-6-2, 16 KOs) while undefeated 20-year-old Chicago-product Jose Quezada (8-0, 5 KOs) faces Tennessee’s Donnell Logan (11-18-2, 6 KOs) in a six-round super lightweight affair.
Rounding out the night of fights is 26-year-old Jeff Souffrant (1-1) of Fort Lauderdale, Florida in a four round welterweight bout against Miami’s Gregory Moore (1-0) and Puerto Rican super welterweight Alex De Jesus (21-1, 13 KOs) in a six-round bout.
At just 23-years-old, Rodriguez has been on a fast track towards a world title fight since turning pro in 2012. On November 25 he makes his U.S. debut after taking down Gabor Molnar, Luis Hinojosa and Alex Rangel in 2015. The Manati, Puerto Rico-born fighter will bring his exciting style into the ring against his toughest test to date when he fights on November 25.
Undefeated in his first 18 pro fights, Aquino looks to bounce back from a narrow majority decision loss to undefeated Adam Lopez in his last outing. The 28-year-old hadn’t gone the distance since 2012 before his last bout, having stopped seven of his previous eight opponents. Born in Higuey, Dominican Republic, he will be fighting in the U.S. for the second time as a professional.
The 22-year-old Arnett was an accomplished amateur who won a 2009 Junior Olympic Championship. Born in Winter Park, Florida, he has taken down previously unbeaten fighters Jeremiah Wiggins, Brandon Quarles and in his last outing, Joshua Conley. He looks to make it four in a row on November 25.
A Cuban boxer fighting out of Miami, Johnson won a silver medal at the 2004 Olympic games. He began fighting professionally in 2009 and won his first 12 pro starts. The 34-year-old took down Norberto Gonzalez and Lenwood Dozier in 2014 and began 2015 with a victory over Pablo Munguia.
A Cherokee-citizen born in Oklahoma and training out of Miami, Nofire will look to make a mark when he faces his toughest test to date on November 25. The 28-year-old has picked up victories in 2015 over Joell Godfrey and Sylvester Barron and has stopped six of his last seven fights inside the distance.
Born in Cuba but fighting out of Miami for several years, Consuegra returns to the site of his last victory, a March triumph over Taurus Sykes. The 31-year-old has picked up victories over veterans Byron Polley, Santiago De Paula and Stacy Frazier since turning pro in 2010.

The 32-year-old Larais a slick boxer with the ability to deliver punishment while taking very little of it in return.  Lara has notched victories over Alfredo Angulo, Austin Trout, Ishe Smith and Freddy Hernandez throughout his career. As an amateur, Lara won numerous titles including a national championship at welterweight and also participated in the 2007 Pan-Am games. The fighter originally from Guantanamo, Cuba most recently dominated Delvin Rodriguez on a June 12 PBC card.
A former world champion at welterweight, Zaveck was a seven-time national champion in his native Slovenia, but has fought out of Germany for most of his career. The 39-year-old won a world title by stopping Isaac Hlatshwayo and went on to defend his title against, Rodolfo Martinez, Rafal Jackiewicz and Paul Delgado. Zaveck enters this fight on a three-bout win streak including his most recent triumph over Sasha Yengoyan in April 2015.

Las Vegas (Sept. 8, 2015) – Eight-time world champion Thomas “The Hitman” Hearns has confirmed that he will appear and have a booth at the Las Vegas Convention Center for the second annual Box Fan Expo that will take place Saturday. Hearns more famously known as “The Hitman,” became the first boxer in history to win world titles in four divisions. He would also become the first fighter in history to win five world titles in five different divisions. Hearns was named Ring Magazine Fighter of the Year in 1980 and 1984 and is best known for his fights with Sugar Ray Leonard, Marvin Hagler and Roberto Duran. He was inducted into the Boxing Hall of Fame in 2012.

PROVIDENCE (July 21, 2015) – The war of words continue between representatives of undefeated World Boxing Organization (WBO) junior middleweight championDemetrius “Boo Boo” Andrade (21-0, 14 KOs) and former two-time super middleweight titlist Anthony “The Man” Mundine (47-7, 27 KOs).

 

Team Andrade issued a press release last Saturday night regarding an agreement it alleged Team Mundine had reneged on for a fight between the two aforementioned fighters next month in Australia. Team Mundine issued a statement yesterday, in which it claimed it had never agreed to a deal, largely because it included a three-fight option on Mundine.

 

Today, Team Andrade countered with a statement of its own to clarify this dubious situation. “Let’s make this perfectly clear,” Andrade’s manager Ed Farris said. “Mundine’s side is bending the facts and hiding the truth in an attempt to back out of the fight. Their recent press release about our side asking for three options on Anthony Mundine isn’t true.  I just discussed this with Demetrius’ promoters (Joe DeGuardia, Star Boxing & Artie Pelullo, Banner Promotions) and there was never a three-fight option on Mundine in the proposed contract.  There was simply a rematch option clause, which to my understanding, guaranteed Anthony Mundine a substantial amount of money with significant minimums. All of the proposed agreements gave Mundine’s people 100-percent of the Australian television market, which is a huge opportunity for additional income beyond his purse. The ball is in their court and it has been for a week now. They have not sent us a counter-offer and that, unfortunately, tells me that his camp simply doesn’t want the fight to happen.”   

 

Farris further added, “As far as statements made by Mundine’s manager (Ben Thompson) that Anthony was offered ‘low dollars’ to fight Demetrius, Anthony Mundine’s purse is paid by HIS promoter, NOT our promoters. We have absolutely nothing to do with that.  I can tell you this, though, Anthony Mundine was offered more money than Demetrius Andrade for this fight. Mundine would have an opportunity to fight for the world title in his backyard for substantially more money than the world champion was getting. How much more does he expect us to give?”

Andrade remains hopeful that Mundine will accept the challenge and sign a contract to fight him as soon as possible. “I think Australian fans would love to see their two-time World Champion fighting the current World Champion in his home country,” Andrade commented. “I want this fight to happen. I don’t care about a rematch clause.  The fact is, if Mundine beats me, he deserves to go fight whoever he wants. I’ve told my promoters to get rid of the rematch option and make this fight happen.

“I’ve made some mistakes in the past – God knows everyone does – but I’m doing everything I can to get back in the ring and give fans what they want.  They’ve been great to me and they deserve to see fights they really want.  Hopefully, they’ll soon get to enjoy watching a great fight between me and Mundine.”
