Ishe Smith Training Camp Notes

Former World Champion Meets Top Contender Julian Williams in Main Event of Premier Boxing Champions on Bounce Live from
The Chelsea Inside The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas on
Sábado, Noviembre. 18
LAS VEGAS (Noviembre 14, 2017) – El ex campeón del mundo Ishe Smith will look to stake his claim to another world title opportunity when he battles top contender Julian Williams en el evento principal de Campeones Premier de Boxeo en Rebote live from The Chelsea inside The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas on Sábado, Noviembre 18.
Smith knows that Williams provides a steep challenge and the veteran will have to be at his best to hold off the hungry title contender.
Julian Williams is tough, one of the toughest in the division,” dijo Smith. “I don’t overlook his talent and what he brings to the sport. I’ve been in boxing going on 17 año, so I’ve seen a lot. Williams hasn’t been tested in all the ways I have. Unlike my opponent, I’ve been in the ring with all levels of fighters: campeones del mundo, rising prospects and former world champions. I’ve seen it all.
The winner of his last two contests, Smith most recently defeated then once-beaten Frank Galarza last September. En Noviembre 18, Smith looks to prove that his experience and hard work in training camp will make all the difference once the bell rings.
This camp is definitely different than my last one, in the sense that I feel more prepared,” dijo Smith. “I have been conditioning my body to go the distance like I have with all fights. With my experience, coupled with my trainer Rafael Ramos, who has been great in preparing me for any and all curveballs my opponent may try and hand me, Estoy listo.
Training for fights becomes more challenging the longer you stay in the sport, but I’ve always kept it a habit to fine tune my body throughout the year, because at any moment you can get that call. My work and my mindset have improved dramatically and by November 18I’ll be exactly where I need to be.
The Las Vegas-native will fight in his hometown for the 19º time as a professional and as always, the first Las Vegas-born world champion hopes to makeSin Cityproud with his performance.
My city has supported me since day one,” dijo Smith. “It feels great to headline another show in my hometown. Through my up and downs my fans have always been there and supported me and this fight won’t be any different; All I can do is get out there and put on a hell of a show. It’s a special feeling to have home court advantage.

The 39-year-old Smith (29-8, 12 KOs) won his world championship with a majority decision over Cornelius Bundrage on Feb. 23, 2013 to become the first Las Vegas-native to win a world title. He has also challenged top fighters such as Erislandy Lara and Daniel Jacobs and most recently defeated Tommy Rainone and Frank Galarza in his last two bouts.
I took this fight just like I’ve taken every tough fight over the years,” dijo Smith. “I constantly challenge myself to the best and I believe Julian Williams is one of the best in the division. If you look at my resume, all I’ve done is fight the best guys, en su mejor momento, entonces esto no es nada nuevo para mi. I’ve reached the point where I’ve seen it all. This fight will get me exactly where I need to be, closer to a world title shot.
Williams (23-1-1, 15 KOs), one of the top young contenders in the 154-pound division, is working his way back into title contention by taking on a tough former world champion in Smith. The 27-year-old Williams of Philadelphia suffered a KO loss to Jermall Charlo in his first title shot in 2016 and returned to the ring with a TKO victory over Joshua Conley in his last fight on Junio 30.
We’ve been working hard for months and I’m ready to get back in the ring,” dijo Williams. “I could fight mañana. I know this is an important fight for my career. Ishe is a veteran and he is going to bring his ‘Agame to try to prove he’s still got it. I’m not going to give him that opportunity. I will be victorious and show that I’m ready to fight the best in the world.
Lionell Thompson (18-4, 11 KOs) is on the trail of a 175-pound world championship and he hasn’t taken the easy road, having challenge the likes of Sergey Kovalev and Radivoje Kalajdzic in his pro career. The 32-year-old out of Buffalo, N.Y. is coming off a knockout victory over Steve Lovett in his last fight on Febrero. 24. The last time he fought at the Cosmopolitan, he defeated Donovan George by unanimous decision on Sept. 16, 2016.
Unbeaten prospect Earl Newman (10-0-1, 7 KOs) will be taking a big step forward in taking on his toughest competition to date in Thompson. The 26-year-old Brooklyn-native is coming off a split draw against Paul Parker on Siete. 19 after winning his first 10 peleas como profesional.
La 2012 Medallista de plata olímpica de Mongoloa, Tugstsogt Nyambayar (8-0, 8 KOs) now fights out of Carson, California. The 25-year-old turned pro in March of 2015 con un nocaut en el primer asalto de Gabriel Braxton. Desde entonces, Nyambayar has stopped every opponent in his path, including most recently scoring a 10ºround TKO over Jhon Gemino in February.
The unbeaten 19-year-old prospect Xavier Martinez (9-0, 5 KOs) will face his toughest test as a pro when he enters the ring on Noviembre 18. Representing Sacramento, Martinez has scored two victories in 2017 having stopped Jesus Aguinaga in September after earning a decision over then unbeaten Prince Smalls in June.

BELÉN, Pensilvania. (Septiembre 19) – Invicto superligero Mario Barrios (20-0, 12 KOs) derrotado Naim Nelson (13-4, 1 KO) via seventh round TKO in the main event of Liga de Campeones de Boxeo MARTES TOE-TO-TOE en FS1 y BOXEO DE CAMPEONES en FOX Deportes desde Sands Bethlehem Events Center en Bethlehem, Papá.
The fast-rising star Barrios of San Antonio started the bout throwing multiple combinations to the head and body of Nelson of Philadelphia. He kept his distance and stayed patient, but did not get to showcase all of the tools in his arsenal as the fight took a turn in the third round when Nelson went to the canvas after hurting his left shoulder by throwing a hook. That was ruled a slip and he dropped to his knees again after throwing another punch, but after being examined by the ringside doctor, it was determined that Nelson could continue.
Barrios was not deterred and continued to move forward, apply pressure and control the action into the fourth round. By the fifth, Nelson’s work rate dropped significantly, which Barrios took advantage of by battering the Philadelphia-native against the ropes. Throughout the sixth, Barrios stalked Nelson around the ring while Nelson tried to work through his apparent shoulder injury, countering with the right where he could. Al final, Barrios sent Nelson to the canvas with a hard left hand causing Referee Gary Rosato to wave off the bout at 1:41 de la séptima ronda. The victory over Nelson marks Barriosfourth straight stoppageall of which have taken place since he started working with renowned trainer Virgil Hunter.
I apologize to the fans of Pennsylvania as I wanted to put on a show esta noche,” said Barrios. “After I caught him, he was trying to survive. He was moving around. I did not concentrate if he hurt his shoulder or not.
I just want to keep moving along and get better. I want to fight again before the end of the year if possible and I know I will put on a show in my next fight.
I was doing well and I had him, but I hurt my shoulder,” said Nelson. “I thought I was doing a good job, but my shoulder just hurt too much. This is a sport and injuries happen.
En la pelea co-estelar, lightweights Thomas Velasquez (9-0, 5 KOs) of Philadelphia and Tyrome Jones (4-2, 1 KO) of South Bend, En. Tyrome Jones fought to a draw in a fast-paced six-round bout. Velásquez, who is mentored by former world champion Danny Garcia, started the fight going to Jonesbody and stuck with that plan throughout. As the fight wore on, Jones turned up the heat and listened to his corner who told him to stay busy and aggressive. Velasquez landed multiple straight left hands in the fourth that stung Jones, but the Indiana-native was able to counter with several straight lefts of his own. The sixth and final round showcased hard-fought action from both pugilists with Jones throwing several hard lefts with Velasquez countering with his own flurries of shots finishing the fight strong. Al final, the judges ruled the bout even 59-55 for each and 57-57.
I had to use the jab in this fight as well as my double-jab and body shots were working well,” dijo Velásquez. “This was a great learning fight and I felt that I won. I can’t wait to get back in the gym, apply what I learned and get back in the ring again soon.
This was a tough fight against an undefeated guy who came in confident,” dijo Jones. “I countered very well and I got to him. I feel that I won the fight, but sometimes the judges don’t see it that way.
The opening bout saw light heavyweights Earl Newman (10-0-1, 7 KOs) de Brooklyn, NY and Paul Parker (8-2-1, 4 KOs) de Toledo, OH fight to an eight-round draw. Parker made it awkward for Newman in the first two rounds by starting out strong, moving forward, diving in and staying busy. Sin embargo, Newman came out of the corner swinging in the third, throwing a left hook that forced Parker to tap the canvas with his glove although it was not ruled a knockdown by referee Benjy Esteves.
Neman worked his right hand throughout the fourth round, ready to counter Parker’s shots. Newman drove Parker back with a left hook in the fifth and continued to put pressure on the Ohio-native throughout the round. The two-time New York Golden Gloves winner continued to press forward and walk down Parker in the later rounds, but was unable to finish strong enough to be victorious as the judges scored the bout 79-32 (Newman), 77-75 (Parker) y 76-76.
After a year off I felt rusty,” said Newman. “I saw the punches, but I did not react as well as I wanted to. Habiendo dicho eso, I kept pressuring and landed more to the body. I felt I won the fight. Now it is back to the drawing board. I definitely can’t be inactive for a long time again.
“Él es un gran peleador,” dijo Parker. “I listened to my corner and followed the game plan. He caught me with some good punches, but I landed more. I wobbled him and I was busier. I really feel that I won the fight. Quiero una revancha”

Here is what Barrios had to say heading into his September 19 confrontación:
On his recent training camp with Virgil Hunter in California
“Ahora mismo, we are finishing up the final days to training camp. All the sparring is complete and I’m 100% healthy going into this fight. My weight is good and Virgil and I have been working harmoniously since he became my lead trainer a few fights back. This will be our fourth fight together and I’m learning a lot, especially with my jab. The improvement will be evident when I step into the ring on fight night.
On facing Naim Nelson in his hometown
In this sport, sometimes you have to go into someone’s backyard, and battle them on their home turf. I know he’ll have a lot of his fans in attendance, but that has no effect on me and my game plan. My goal is to go into this fight, set the pace from the opening bell and come out victorious. Por el final de la noche, everyone in the building will have respect for me.
On fighting in the main event on FS1 and FOX Deportes
It’s great to be fighting on FS1 and FOX Deportes once again, especialmente en el evento principal. The exposure I get from fighting on a national stage like this is great for my career. I’m just grateful to my team and everyone involved who put this fight together. I always shine on FS1 and Fox Deportes, and this fight is not going to be any different. Estoy listo para llevar mi carrera al siguiente nivel.”
On fighting at super lightweight for the fourth time in his career
The move to 140 pounds has be a tremendous blessing to my career. I feel really strong and I can see myself fighting at this weight class for a few more years. My body is filling out just fine and my power is coming up with me.

LEYENDO, Pensilvania. (Septiembre 10, 2016) – Middleweight world champion Daniel “El hombre de los milagros” Jacobs (32-1, 29 KOs) retained his title and knocked down former world champion Sergio “The Latin Snake” Mora (28-5-2, 9 KOs) five times on his way to a seventh-round TKO in the main event of Liga de Campeones de Boxeo en Espiga Viernes night from Santander Arena in Reading, Papá.
The bout was a rematch of their championship fight last August that saw Jacobs win by TKO despite being dropped in the first round. Mora suffered an ankle injury on the punch that ended the last fight but he was not able to capitalize on his second chance.
Jacobs was in control early and often, attacking the body of Mora and switching between orthodox and southpaw styles to stay in control throughout. Mora was evasive and used good head movement to frustrate Jacobs early but could never get his own offense going.
The champion from Brooklyn stayed the course and in round four he broke through with a left hook to the head that sent Mora crumpling to the mat. Mora recovered but again had a knockdown scored against him in round five.
Sensing his moment, Jacobs came out aggressive in the seventh round as he clearly sought an end to the fight. A left right combo dropped Mora in the corner early in the round before he was dropped from a body shot moments after getting back on his feet.
Referee Gary Rosato let the fight continue but Jacobs put a quick end to the night by smothering Mora and dropping him for the fifth and final time, forcing the referee to stop the bout at 2:08 en la ronda.
In front of a raucous and supportive crowd, invicto estrella en ascenso Robert Pascua (18-0, 14 KOs) earned a narrow split-decision victory over previously unbeaten Richard Commey (24-1, 22 KOs) in a thrilling contest that saw both men grab momentum at different points throughout the 12-round bout.
Easter used his jab and length advantage in round one and appeared to have more success throughout the night when he fought from a distance. The fight vacillated between a tactical battle and a toe-to-toe war by the round and even by the minute.
The Ghanaian Commey was aggressive throughout the fight and had success pushing Easter to the ropes and catching him with big right hands. In round eight, Commey scored a knockdown on one of those right hands, as referee Benjy Esteves ruled that Easter’s glove hit the canvas as a result of the punch.
Easter and Commey both came out firing in round nine, engaging in one of the many exchanges that put the lively crowd on its feet. Easter had great success throughout the night with his right uppercut that consistently caught Commey coming in, but never deterred him completely.
Both men reached the 12-round limit for the first time in their careers but it was Easter who took advantage of the final stanza by rocking and wobbling Commey with a big overhand right just seconds into the round.
Commey was able to survive on the ropes and by consistently wrapping up his opponent. Both men were lifted to the air in triumph by their trainers after the final bell rang as the crowd cheered the two combatants. In the end the judges scored the fight 114-113 for Commey and 115-112 y 114-113 for Easter.
Esto es lo que los combatientes tenían que decir Viernes noche:
DANIEL JACOBS
I have to take my hat off to Sergio Mora. There was a lot of talking before this fight, pero esto es boxeo. I respect any man who gets inside of this ring.
I want to prove to the world that I’m the best middleweight. If GGG gets the victorymañana, Eso es lo que queremos.
I wanted to go in there to hurt him and keep my knockout streak alive. I did what I said I would.
I didn’t expect to knock him down as much, but I did see the fight ending in a knockout. It took a while because he’s so tricky. I wasn’t able to jab the way I wanted to. That’s what happens when you fight guys who have been in the game for a long time.
The support of my city means a lot. There are guys here that I’ve known since kindergarten. People showed me love across the board and it was tremendous. For them to be on this journey with me, it means everything. I’m living my dream.
This one’s for Brooklyn. We have to spread the love around but I’ll be back home in December headlining at Barclays Center.
SERGIO MORA
The guy punches really hard. I was trying to catch him like I did in the first fight but I couldn’t do it today.
We expected him to fight the way he did. He’s big and powerful. I knew I would have to catch him with a few shots and take him into the later rounds. I think I was doing that until my legs couldn’t recover.
I’m not going to take anything away from his victory, but I never recovered from a shot to the back of the head. They counted it as a knockdown so I’ll have to take a look at the video, but it felt like the back of the head.
This guy is a big overwhelming figure. When he got on top of me I could feel his weight. You really need those legs to wake up when you get buzzed.
The fight was close in my heart. Daniel finally gave me credit. I didn’t feel like I got beat up, he just caught me with good shots. I have a lot left in me. I’m going to look at the tape and see where I’m at.
Robert Easter
It’s been a long training camp. We had an amazing training camp. This fight wasn’t easy at all. We knew it wasn’t going to be easy. Richard Commey is a tough, competidor duro. He made me fight each and every round, but we did it.
The game plan was to go out there and box him and use my length and reach. I made a few mistakes esta noche. One of them was not fighting him early enough. It wouldn’t have been close. En la última ronda, when I needed the round, I went out and got it.
I took everything that I had, todos 16 years in the sport, and I used it to go get that belt.
You always have to stay composed as a professional. I wasn’t hurt at all on the knockdown. I know what happened in there. He threw a shorter right hand and I stumbled. I finished the round tough.
Early in the fight I thought I hurt him with a hook and right hand combo. In the last round I caught him right on the chin. That wobbled him. He held on for dear life.
I knew it was going to come down to a split decision. I felt in my heart that I did enough. He missed a lot of shots.
I want more straps. I want belts. This is huge for my city. Significa mucho. It’s bigger than me. I wanted to give them something to believe in.
All this hard work we had to put in for this fight, we had to dig in deep. I did this for my city and Toledo came out for me esta noche.”
RICHARD COMMEY
I feel like I won this fight. I did everything that I could. I landed the more accurate shots. I come from very far and it’s hard to win here versus an American. I deserve a rematch.
I was very devastated when I heard the scores. I knew it was a close fight. He went down and I didn’t.
I want to be a world champion. Even if he doesn’t want to fight me, I want another opportunity. I can fight at the highest level in the world. We worked so hard to get to this stage. I want to stay at this level. I’ll keep improving.

This is a big opportunity and something I’ve wanted for my whole life. Ever since I was nine-years-old. All the hard work I’ve put in since I was a kid, everyone will see. I will put on a great performance
We already were working hard before we knew we had this title shot. Someone has to pay for the work I’ve been putting in for 16 years in this business. El Viernes night it will be another victory and another man down.
RICHARD COMMEY
I’m very happy to be here and I’m thankful for this opportunity. When I first started boxing this is what I hoped for.
This is all that I have had on my mind. This is what has motivated me for many years.
“Tal Como Viernes night I’m going to be ready to fight and I’m going to be a world champion.
