Though New York Rules May Have Changed Giorgi Gelashvili’s Hunt for a World Championship Continues

Former Amateur Standout Faces Detroit’s Larry Ventus Qhov no Saturday at ‘Detroit Brawl

You can’t blame undefeated super lightweight prospect Giorgi Gelashvili for feeling like the rug was pulled out from under him a little.

In search of notoriety and success in the American boxing universe, the 22-year-old from Kutaisi, Georgia, moved his home base to Brooklyn, New York, last year only to have heavy-handed new laws in the state derail his plans temporarily.
The bill, that went into effect in August, dramatically increased mandatory insurance premiums promoters must pay to put on a show in the state — los ntawm $10,000 rau $50,000 for general coverage per fighter and $1 million minimum, per-fighter, in the event of brain injury. The result is that smaller shows in New York State are basically impossible to justify financially.
It is disappointing that I can’t fight in New York,” said Gelashvili. “My first three fights were on Salita’s Brooklyn Brawl series. New York has lots of people from my country and I was building a fan base in the community.
But like any true champion must, Gelashvili has since picked himself up and moved his fighting base to Detroit, Michigan, where a new group of fans have welcomed him warmly.
Gelashvili (5-0, 3 Kos) will face Detroiter Larry Ventus (6-11-1, 3 Kos) in a six-round showdown on Salita Promotions latest “Detroit Brawl” event at the Masonic Temple in Downtown Detroit, rau Saturday, Kaum Ib Hlis Ntuj 12.
Daim pib rau “Detroit Brawl” will be priced at VIP $123, Lub Rooj Zaum Rooj $100, Ringside $93, $63, $38, thiab $28 and available at all Ticketmaster outlets and Ticketmaster.com.
I had my last two fights in Detroit and it’s becoming my new boxing home,” he continued. “I know that the city is rebuilding because very time I visit, it’s nicer. New buildings are going up. Detroit has a great positive energy and it’s home to many great fighters and the world-famous Kronk Gym. I get lots of respect from the fans here. They know boxing and they most definitely love a good fight. They know I come to fight and put my heart and soul on the line. Like Detroit, I am climbing up the ranks for worldwide respect and positive recognition.
Extremely strong and powerful for a fighter his size, Gelashvili had over 120 amateur fights winning 110 while becoming a five-time Georgian National champion. Still he maintains he’s training hard to face Ventus, who is known to pull a surprise or two out of his veteran bag of tricks.
I know Larry Ventus is a good fighter. He has a bad record, but he has fought many top fighters and in his last fight I heard fought a very close fight with Dorin Spivey. I know he has been training for a long time for this and he is from Detroit, so he’s got the hometown advantage. I trained hard and I am ready.
Gleashvili says many of his New York-based fans are making the trek to watch him no hnub vas xaum in Motown and that he is still very happy so far with search for fame and fortune overseas.
I have been with Salita Promotions for a little over a year they keep me very busy and help me with transition to the US and professional boxing. I believe that they will take me to the top of my division. I am working hard and taking on all comers. Kaum Ib Hlis Ntuj 12 nyob rau hauv Detroit… Kuv tsis tau tos!”

Ed Williams, Nephew of Former World Champion Duane Thomas, Will Appear on Salita Promotions‘Detroit Brawl

As a kid, watching his uncle, former WBC World Super Welterweight Champion Duane Thomas fight on TV, Detroit’s Ed Williams used to dream of becoming a boxer.
That’s where he and his mother disagreed.
I always wanted to box,” laughs Williams, “but my mother wouldn’t let me fight until I was older. My uncle even came and tried to sneak me to the gym a few times, but my mom would never let me. She just wouldn’t let me train.
When Williams turned 17, he was finally able to box and made the most of it, mus 57-9 as an amateur and winning two State Championships, the Ringside Nationals and two Detroit Golden Gloves before turning professional in 2007.
Williams won his first two fights before leaving boxing to obtain a B.Sc degree in Industrial Engineering at Eastern Michigan University. But after working in the field a few years, Williams felt the pull once again that he’d felt since childhood.

Williams is, admittedly, not your typical fighter.
I have a boxing style that is awkward. It’s not a traditional style at all. I fight with an off-beat tempo that throws you off. And I’m tall and long, so I box you and use my jab and then I set up shots.
While Williams says he has no regrets with his decision to pursue fighting, someone in the family does have a few
My mom now says she wishes she would have let me do it sooner. But I understand. She didn’t want me to get hurt and was just being protective. Now she’s my biggest fan.

HEAVYWEIGHT UPSET BREWING IN DETROIT?

Gormley Confident that Undefeated Ruiz Will Taste Defeat at ‘Detroit Brawl’ rau Saturday, Lub Xya hli ntuj 16

, ntawm Masonic lub tuam tsev

Having already experienced being a world-rated TV-level fighter under tremendous pressure to win every fight impressively, Miami-based slugger Josh “Dempsey” Gormley says he much prefers the lowered expectations of being considered the “tus nrog sib ntaus” since coming back to boxing.
There’s a lot of pressure on you as the A-side guy,” explained Gormley. “As an opponent, I’m supposed to lose, so when I win it’ll be that much more dramatic.
Gormley (22-4, 21 Kos) will face WBO #5-, IBF #5-, and WBC #7-rated and current NABF heavyweight champion Andy “Tus neeg rhuav tshem los ntawm Mexicali” Ruiz (27-0, 18 Kos) in a non-title fight no hnub vas xaum nyob rau hauv Detroit. The two bruising heavyweights will meet in the 10-round main event of Salita Promotionslatest “Detroit Brawl” event at the Masonic Temple.
Sponsored by Thomas Magee’s Sporting House Whiskey Bar, daim pib rau “Detroit Brawl” will be priced at VIP $123, Lub Rooj Zaum Rooj $100, Ringside $93, Tshwj tseg $63 thiab $38, thiab sam thiaj $28, thiab muaj nyob rau ntawm tag nrho cov khaub ncaws picketmaster thiab Rhiab.
Gormley says he isn’t prepared to go along with the expected outcome for a 41-year-old fighter taking on a top contender in just his third fight since returning from a 16-year retirement. He’s coming to Detroit to win.
“Nws yog zoo meej rau kuv,” he said of Ruiz. “I feel like I’m fighting the weakest guy in the top 10. He doesn’t punch hard and I won’t have to look for him. He comes forward a lot and he’s not Floyd Mayweather. I don’t think he can handle my power. Now that I’m older, I hit harder than ever and I’m in great shape. I doubt it’ll last the distance. I’ll get him out of there in about five rounds. Even if he does, I’m in great shape to beat him over the distance.
Gormley, reportedly the grandson of all-time-great heavyweight champion Jack Dempsey, muab pro nyob rau hauv 1992 and flirted with world-contender status before suffering a pair of tough losses and retiring in 1999. Txawm li cas los, boxing, like any addiction, eventually lured him back.
I just want to take opportunities and see what I can do,” nws hais tias. “Yeej los yog poob, I’m just carrying on my legacy and seeing what I can still do. My goal is to be champ of the world. But I’m not chasing that dream lie I used to. A long time ago I chased the heavyweight championship dream so hard that every loss was devastating. Tam sim no, I want to take the opportunities as they come and win some of them. And hey, when I beat this guy, I’m back in the top 10!”
Scheduled in support of the main event that night will be Giorgi Gelashvili (4-0, 2 Kos) of Brooklyn via Georgia facing comebacking veteran Eric Hall (8-9-1, 4 Kos) of Durand, Michigan in a super lightweight six-rounder.
Tsis tas li ntawd, Serdar Hudayberdiyev (2-0, 2 Kos) ntawm turkmenabat, Turkmenistan, will face fellow undefeated fighter Steven Andrade (3-0, 2 Kos) ntawm Atlanta, Georgia in a welterweight four-rounder.

Detroit prospect Demetrius Banks (7-0, 4 Kos) is scheduled for a six-round cruiserweight match-up against Niagara Falls, New York’s Eric George (4-11).
Promising Detroit bantamweight Jarico O’Quinn (1-0, 1 KO), a recent Salita Promotions signee, will take on Sergio Aguilar (0-3) of Miami Beach, Florida, in a four-round bout; super bantamweight Zach Shamoun (3-0-1, 3 Kos) Ntawm Royal Oak, Michigan, will face also-unbeaten Jose Elizondo (1-0) ntawm San Antonio, Texas; and so-far perfect undefeated cruiserweight Clarence Dubose (3-0, 3 Kos) of Detroit will look to keep his KO streak intact against Karinn Davis (2-6, 2 Kos) ntawm Jackson, Michigan.
Detroit middleweight Dorell Van Horn Jr. (9-0, 6 Kos) will face Rapid City, South Dakota’s Ryan Soft (3-5-1, 1 KO) nyob rau hauv ib tug rau-rounder.
