El Paso, Texas (July 18) – Undefeated Irish star Carl “The Jackal” Frampton (21-0, 14 KOs) showed massive heart and determination, as he successfully defended his junior featherweight title against Alejandro Gonzalez Jr. (25-2-2, 15 KOs) at the Don Haskins Center in El Paso and live on PBC on CBS. Fighting in his U.S. debut. Frampton was knocked down twice in the first round, but bounced back in impressive fashion to win via unanimous decision (116-108 twice and 115-109).

In the televised opener, heavyweights Chris “The Nightmare” Arreola (36-4-1, 31 KOs) and “Big” Fred Kassi (18-3-1, 10 KOs) fought a close 10-round bout ending in a majority draw.

 

Gonzalez Jr. came out swinging and hit Frampton with a hard straight left jab less than a minute into the fight, sending the Northern Ireland-native to the canvas for the first time in his career.  Frampton was knocked down again with less than 15 seconds left in the as first, when Gonzalez hit Frampton with a sharp right hand behind his ear. Gonzalez was deducted a point in the third round for a low blow and again in the 11th.

 

“The Jackal” lived up to the lofty expectations of his U.S. debut by throwing and landing 100 more punches than Gonzalez Jr., including nearly triple the amount of jabs. Gonzalez Jr., threw more power punches, however, Frampton was more accurate with his power shots.

 

“I didn’t feel great in the first round. I got up from two flash knockdowns though and recovered well. The kid could punch very well,” said Frampton. “The ring canvas was very soft. I couldn’t get up on my toes and that’s my best attribute. I got up and showed courage. I came back and won most of the rounds and gave excitement.”

 

Frampton continued, “I wanted to win by knockout. It didn’t happen. I’m disappointed, but I’ll re-evaluate and move on; onwards and upwards. He hit me low so many times, but you’ve got to deal with that and carry on and that’s what I did.”

 

“I definitely won the fight, I was much more effective,” said Gonzalez. “I want a rematch and I’m happy to do it in his hometown. I’ll take whatever fights are best for me either at 118 or 122.”

 

“The ref overreacted to the low blows, I was just doing my body work,” Gonzalez continued. “I’m not a dirty fighter, I play by the rules and this was disappointing. He’s a good fighter but I’m the best he’s ever faced.”

 

In the opening bout of the telecast, Arreola prepared to make a statement that he was ready for another world title shot, yet was unable to deliver the performance he had hoped due to Kassi’s solid game plan and heavy-hitting fists. The scores were 96-94 for Arreola and 95-95 (twice).
“It was a good decision.  It was just a tough fight,” said Arreola. “Fred came to fight and he’s a survivor.  He held right, he moved right.  He came here with a good strategy and he got a draw out of it.”

 

Arreola continued, “I know if I get Deontay (Wilder), I’d be in much better shape and a lot better prepared.  Not that I wasn’t prepared for Kassi, but he came here with a good fight and was prepared.”

 

Kassi did not take anything away from Arreola, but clearly felt that he won the bout.

 

“I’m not happy with the decision,” said Kassi. “I feel that I won every round of the fight. I showed tonight I was the better fighter. I take nothing away from Chris. I’ve been his friend for years. People don’t know me, so I just wanted to show the world I could do it. I proved that I belong in the heavyweight division. I showed my heart. I‘ve been training hard for many years and I showed it tonight.”

EL PASO, TX (July 14, 2015) – Mexican-American heavyweight star Chris “The Nightmare” Arreola, (36-4, 31 KOs) will face “Big” Fred Kassi, (18-3-0, 10 KOs) on Premier Boxing Champions on CBS, Saturday afternoon, July 18 from the Don Haskins Center at the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP). Televised coverage on CBS Sports starts at 4 p.m. ET/2 p.m. MT/1 p.m. PT.

 

Featured on the undercard is a trio of undefeated prospects as Mario Barrios (14-0, 5 KOs) takes on Jose Esquivel (9-2, 2 KOs)in a six-round super featherweight bout, Ryan Karl (7-0, 5 KOs) faces Rigobert Flores (7-1, 2 KOs) in six-rounds of super lightweight action and Steve Lovett (12-0, 10 KOs) battles Jinner Guerrero (8-4, 6 KOs) in an eight-round light heavyweight attraction

 

Also featured is the 10-round middleweight clash between 26-year-old unbeaten Ivan Golub (8-0, 6 KOs), fighting out of Brooklyn by way of Ukraine, and 26-year-old Lukasz Maciec (22-2-1, 5 KOs) from Lublin, Poland.

 

Rounding out the day of fights is 21-year-old Justin Deloach (9-1, 5 KOs) out of Georgia, Louisiana who faces 29-year-old Detroit-native Lauro Alcantar (9-3, 1 KO) in a six-round super welterweight battle, while 24-year-old Josh Taylor (0-2) from Scotland will enter the ring against Houston’s Randy Gibson (0-1) for a six-round super lightweight bout.

 

These exciting fights will support the PBC on CBS main event pitting undefeated Irish superstar Carl Frampton (20-0, 14 KOs) in a world title defense against Mexico’s Alejandro “Cobrita” Gonzalez Jr. (25-1-2, 15 KOs).

Making his first start in El Paso, the 34-year-old Arreola is anxious to fight in front of the passionate West Texas boxing fans. On the March 13 PBC card he was victorious against Curtis Harper in an outstanding slugfest that featured excellent two-way action throughout. A native of Riverside, Calif., Arreola has challenged the top heavyweights over the last decade and is regarded as one of the most feared punchers in the division.  

 

Born in Cameroon but fighting out of New Orleans, the 35-year-old hard-hitting Kassi will be looking to upset Arreola and make an impact on a huge stage. Kassi has delivered knockouts in five of his last eight fights and will make his first start of 2015 on July 18.

 

Fighting in his home state and representing San Antonio, Barrioslooks for his third knockout victory of 2015 on July 18. The 20-year-old hopes to build on his momentum and continue to grow his fan base in his home state when he takes on the 25-year-old Esquivel from Mexico.

 

An undefeated prospect representing Houston, Karl had an excellent amateur career that ended with him ranked third in the nation in the 141-pound division. The 23-year-old has already won twice in 2015 and most recently defeated Alfred Hall on May 9. He faces the 32-year-old Californian Flores.

 

Representing New South Wales, Austraila, Lovettturned pro in 2010 and has yet to drop a fight in his first 12 bouts. The 30-year-old takes on the 32-year-old Guerrero from Ecuador.

LAS VEGAS (June 21, 2015) – Rances “Kid Blast” Barthelemy (23-0, 13 KOs) dominated and dropped Antonio DeMarco (31-5-1, 23 KOs) on his way to a wide unanimous 10-round decision on Premier Boxing Champions on CBS Sunday afternoon at the MGM Grand Garden Arena as promoter of the event and President of Mayweather Promotions Floyd “Money” Mayweather watched from the first row.

 

Barthelemy was strong in his 140-pound debut, landing with his left hand from every angle, including a straight left that knocked DeMarco down in the fourth round. Barthelemy controlled the fight, never allowing the southpaw DeMarco to ramp up the pressure or land anything significant.

 

Despite being deducted a point in the ninth round, Barthelemy won by the score of 99-89 on all three judges’ scorecards.

 

In the televised opener, Sammy “The Sergeant” Vasquez (19-0, 13 KOs) was too quick and busy for the heavy fisted Wale “Lucky Boy” Omotoso (25-2, 21 KOs) as he won a unanimous 10-round decision by the scores of 98-92 on all the scorecards.

 

Vasquez got off to a fast start winning the first three rounds by using an aggressive southpaw style to deliver numerous combinations to the head and body. Omotoso was eventually able to slow down Vasquez a bit with an increased offensive output and strong counters.

 

Despite blood pouring down over his face, Vasquez finished strong to pull away. .  Vasquez out-landed Omotoso 162-134 while landing 50 percent of his power punches, per CompuBox.

 

RANCES BARTHELEMY

 

“I worked very hard with my trainer to prepare for this fight and that preparation helped me catch DeMarco in the fourth round and I dropped him.

 

“My left helped me a lot tonight. I stayed true to the Cuban boxing school, and when I saw an opening I threw the other hand to keep him guessing.

 

“I’m blessed to be in this position. Coming from an impoverished upbringing in Cuba to fighting on a PBC card on CBS is unbelievable.

 

“I want Omar Figueroa next. It would be like a modern day version of Diego Corrales vs. Jose Luis Castillo.”

 

ANTONIO DEMARCO

 

“I was waiting to counter and he landed a strong left in the fourth when I went down.

 

“I fought my fight and my style. One has to learn how to handle losing, and he was just the better fighter tonight.

 

“This was a great opportunity on CBS, but unfortunately we weren’t able to accomplish our objective.

 

“Right now I just want to go home to my family. I don’t know what’s next. I’m going to think hard about whether to retire or continue fighting.”

 

SAMMY VASQUEZ

 

“Wale’s a tough competitor. Obviously I haven’t tested like this previously.

 

“My objective was just to box him, move around and not let him hit me because I know he has the power that his record shows. He does hit kind of hard, but it’s not anything I haven’t seen before.

 

“I knew I had him hurt in the ninth when I connected on a solid body shot.

 

“I carry Pittsburgh and Monessen on my back. I’d like to be fighting there, but Las Vegas is the mecca of boxing and all the greats have fought here.  I have an exciting fighting style and I like to bring that to my opponent like I showcased today. I hope that I created some more fans that want to follow me.

 

“With everyone watching on CBS this was an incredible opportunity for me and my career. I want to thank all the fans that watched for helping me grow my fan base.

 

“It’s awesome to fight on Father’s Day. My dad has been my backbone from the very beginning. I started boxing because I was getting bullied. We’ve had some struggles in this game, and everything I’ve been through with my two tours of Iraq. He’s always been my backbone and I’m just so blessed to have him in my corner.

 

“I don’t know what’s next yet. I don’t have a specific opponent in mind and I don’t want to call anyone out. Beating Wale was great, but we’ll go back to the drawing board and consider who’s out there for me.”

“I thought it was a closer fight, but that’s the judges’ job. It was a good fight for sure.

 

“I was hurting him with the left jab and some hard rights. That’s why he was bleeding.

 

“He caught me with a good right, but I wasn’t really hurt. He’s sharp with his left though and kept me a little off balance.

 

“This was a great opportunity for me. It was great exposure and people will know me now.

 

“I’ll fight anybody they want to put in front of me.

 

“I want to wish a Happy Father’s Day to all the fathers out there and a Happy Father’s Day to my son. I love him so much.”

LAS VEGAS (June 18, 2015) – An animated Adrien “The Problem” Broner held court for several minutes Thursday, as a calm “Showtime” Shawn Porter delivered his own strong message in advance of the exciting weekend of Premier Boxing Champions action at MGM Grand.

In a different role than his usual one as boxing’s pound-for-pound king, President of Mayweather Promotions Floyd “Money” Mayweather helped run the press conferences alongside Mayweather Promotions CEO Leonard Ellerbe.

On the Saturday, June 20 PBC on NBC show, Broner (30-1, 22 KOs) will take on Porter(25-1-1, 16 KOs) after Errol “The Truth” Spence Jr. (16-0, 13 KOs) battles Phil “The Italian Sensation” Lo Greco (26-1, 14 KOs). Televised coverage on NBC begins at8:30 p.m. ET/5:30 p.m. PT.

Also at Thursday’s press conference, main event participant on the Sunday, June 21 PBC on CBS card Antonio DeMarco (31-4-1, 23 KOs) vowed to bring home a victory for his cancer-stricken sister in Sunday’s PBC on CBS main event showdown against former world champion Rances Barthelemy (22-0, 13 KOs) .   Sunday’s co-feature showcases a welterweight matchup between Sammy Vasquez (18-0, 13 KOs) and Wale Omotoso (25-1, 21 KOs). Televised coverage begins on CBS Sports at 4 p.m. ET/1 p.m. PT.

Also in attendance on Thursday were rising stars from Mayweather Promotions who will be competing on both Saturday and Sunday.

“With all the media here talking to him, it’s obvious that Adrien is doing something right. He’s entertaining and people like it.

“There’s no limit to how far Adrien Broner can go in this sport. He can fight. I’m in the gym with him and he’s boxing top guys. He’s pushing himself.

“I feel great, it’s a good day. I’m just counting down until fight night.

“I’ve been working on everything in camp. I have a lot of speed, power, quickness and the whole nine. It’s going to take everything to win this fight.

“He’s got good speed, so we’re preparing for him to use a lot of that. We’ll make adjustments as we go along but the key is definitely taking care of his speed with our speed.

“It’s so sweet to be fighting at MGM Grand, this is what you want as a fighter. It’s my time now. I’m so excited about this opportunity.

“Number one, we have to take care of business. We know that if we take care of business it’ll be a great Father’s Day on Sunday.”

ERROL SPENCE JR.

“I just have to stay focused and put on a spectacular performance on Saturday night. Hopefully next time I’ll be the main event. It’s a process but I’m getting there.

“I’m ready for anybody in the welterweight division, I’m ready for any kind of step up in competition period. I’m not the guy to shy away from anybody.

“Porter and Broner are a little more seasoned that me, but skill wise I think I’m right on par with them. Skill for skill I can match anybody in boxing.

“A lot of guys aren’t in the position that I’m in to get the opportunities that I have. This is my third year as a pro and it’s all been coming pretty fast. It’s all about timing. I’m enjoying the process.

“You’re going to be looking at the future of the sport come Saturday night.”

PHIL LO GRECO

“There’s no such thing as the right moment. The perfect fight is when you want it to be. I got the call and decided that this is the perfect timing.

“It took me about 30 seconds to decide to take this fight. When you know why you fight, it makes these decisions easy.

“A year ago there was no way I thought I’d be on this stage. Now I have real opportunities and we’re here now.

“Win, lose or draw, I’m going back to the gym next week.

“I’m a pressure fighter. I like to engage and give the fans what they want to see. This is a great opportunity. Saturday is going to be fun.”

RANCES BARTHELEMY

“I’m feeling good moving up in weight. Everybody knows Antonio DeMarco is a very, very tough fighter. He’s one of the best I’ve ever fought. His record who he has faced proves that. He’s experienced, but so am I. 

“I want to be the best Cuban fighter of all-time and I’m on my way.

“I’m in tremendous shape and I’m ready to go. I want to showcase my skills on Sunday to show the world how I can fight.

“Who do I want to fight? I’ll fight anyone they put in my way. I’ll fight Godzilla if he’s there.

“I don’t do predictions but this is going to be an entertaining fight. Unlike past Cuban fighters, I have power and can knock people out. In the amateurs you don’t need power. But in the pros, that’s what it’s all about.” 

ANTONIO DEMARCO

“This is going to be a tough fight, a difficult fight, but I have a great responsibility. My 15-year-old sister told me that if I win, she will beat cancer. She was diagnosed with bone cancer last November – and it was life-threatening. But her last chemo treatment was yesterday.

“From a ring standpoint, I am really looking forward to Sunday. I am very prepared, I am relaxed and ready to go. Besides for my sister, my other main motivation is that this is a chance to get my career back on track. A victory and I can get back to where I was and in position to challenge the best.

“I am treating it like another fight, but of course it is much more. Exposure-wise, you can’t get better than network television.

“I know Rances is going to be a difficult opponent. He’s a great fighter. But I have the experience to come up with a game plan to win. From a career-standpoint, this is a very important fight and I’m ready for it.”

SAMMY VASQUEZ

“It’s an honor to be here in this building among some of the greatest fighters in the world. Omotoso has never fought anyone like me before.

“I’m here to restore the greatness of Pittsburgh boxing. Everyone knows ‘The Pittsburgh Kid’, Paul Spadafora, but we all carry the torch differently. “Omotoso is tough. His record speaks for itself at 25-1. His only loss was to Jessie Vargas who’s fighting for a world title. I don’t take anybody lightly. I’ve trained hard for this and I don’t think he’s fought anyone as fast as me or hits as hard as me with both hands.

“I’m going to throw a lot of punches and it should be fun to see. It will be an entertaining fight. The main goal is to win. If the opportunity presents itself to knock him out then I will. I’m not going to go in there trying to knock his head off or anything. I have to box smart.

“In this game it’s all about longevity and the less you get hit the longer you can fight so I don’t want to get hit. That’s my goal.”

Mayweather made the most of his time at the gym, staying for nearly two hours to talk with the media, give the fighters insight and advice and sign autographs for fans.

 

Fighters who worked out at the event that are featured on Saturday’s Premier Boxing Champions on NBC card included Adrien “The Problem” Broner (30-1, 22 KOs),“Showtime” Shawn Porter (25-1-1, 16 KOs) and Errol “The Truth” Spence Jr. (16-0, 13 KOs). “My dad ‘Pops’ was the first person to take me to the boxing gym and that is where we met Coach Mike [Stafford]. My dad just knew that he wanted me to box and he took me to the right place.

 

“Everyone calls my dad ‘Pops’ because he’s like a dad to everyone around me – my friends, fighters in the gym…everyone.  He’s always been there 100 percent of the time.

 

“Me and my dad are both a little crazy. We are similar people. We are both cut from a different cloth, we like to have fun and work hard. We mesh.

 

“My dad usually comes to camp the last two weeks, so he is at the gym everyday leading up to the fights. When he’s not with me in the gym, he is working on cars as a mechanic in Cincinnati.

 

“[On being a father] I love being with my kids. I like to do fun things with them and give them more than I had as a kid. I love when they come to the gym and come to my fights.

“My dad has always been there from sports to school and has helped me through all of it. He is an anomaly because he was always there as a single father. You don’t really find that too much in the African American community – a single dad that wants to be there for his children the way my dad has been there for me and my brother.

“My dad got me started in boxing. He was a truck driver, so he used to drive overnight, and then he’ll get home 12:00 p.m. or later then take me to the gym.  Then after that he’d come from the gym, it was like 5:00 or 6:00 p.m., and he would rest for one or two hours and go straight to work.

 

“At the time, I didn’t really think about it, but as I got older and a little bit wiser, realizing all the sacrifices that he sacrificed for me to be able to box and go to all these national tournaments and all these tournaments out of state and stuff.  He had to pay for the hotel, pay for food and stuff like that out of pocket.  We didn’t have any sponsors and stuff like that.

“I am proud to be named after my dad and I thank him for believing in me and pushing me to be the best I can be.

 

“He plays a big part of my boxing career.  He’s my supporter.  That’s my mentor.  That’s like my best friend.  For Father’s Day, I’m going to get him a win, and it’s going to be an impressive win that he’ll be proud of and he’ll love.  He played a big part in my career.  Without him, I know I wouldn’t be boxing. My dad will be in my corner Saturday night.”

 

 

RANCES BARTHELEMY

 

“Father’s Day is very special to me because my wife and daughter, who are my world, treat me like a king for the day. Being a father is very important, and in today’s society, not enough fathers are there for their children. It’s great that there is a day to honor the good fathers that take care of their families.

 

“My father, Emilio Barthelemy, was always there for me and my brothers. He got us into the sport of boxing. When I left Cuba it was very difficult for me because me and my dad were very close. I love him very much and I want to wish him a happy Father’s Day as well.

 

“I remember when we were little, me and my brothers would take my father out to breakfast on Father’s Day. It was a very special time and we all enjoyed the moment. My wife and daughter love to spoil me on Father’s Day. Last year they took me to my favorite Cuban restaurant and I enjoyed a wonderful meal with both of them.”

A multi-sport athlete growing up who has competed in both boxing and mixed martial arts professionally Oklahoma City’s Rhodes looks to remain unbeaten on June 21. The 27-year-old is fighting for the second time in Las Vegas and the first time in 2015. He last fought in Nov. 2014 when he won a unanimous decision over Miguel Huerta. He takes on 32-year- Robinson out of Sumter, South Carolina.

 

Born in Chicago but fighting out of Las Vegas, Tabiti has a perfect knockout percentage as a pro and is looking for his third knockout at MGM Grand. The 25-year-old last fought in Dec. 2014 and will face the 30-year-old Ashland, Kentucky-born Hanshaw.

 

A 28-year-old Romanian fighting out of Las Vegas, Gavril bounced back from his first defeat by out-boxing previously unbeaten Oscar Riojas in April. He will square off against the experienced 28-year-old Nicklow from Baltimore.

 

Nicknamed “KO” because of his considerable power, the 29-year-old Bellows looks to build on his six fight winning streak on June 21. The Las Vegas-native takes on the 34-year-old Upshaw out of Jacksonville.

An accomplished amateur who won Irish national championships in 2005 and 2009, plus a European Union Juniors silver medal in 2007, the 28-year-old Frampton has had major success leading to his U.S. debut on July 18.  From Belfast, Northern Ireland, United Kingdom, Frampton won his world title in Sept. 2014 with a dominant unanimous decision over Kiko Martinez. His most recent fight was a title defense in February of this year in which he blasted Chris Avalos on the way to a fifth round stoppage.

 

The son of a former world champion, the 22-year-old Gonzalez Jr. is looking to make his mark in this nationally televised fight. The Tijuana, Mexico native was impressive in his previous bout on U.S. soil, knocking Leopoldo Gonzalez down three times on his way to a first round TKO in El Paso. He returns to El Paso looking to build on his three fight win streak which has seen him take down Javier Franco, Alem Robles and Gonzalo Garcia.

 

The 34-year-old Arreola defeated Curtis Harper in a thrilling heavyweight showdown onMarch 13 in Ontario, Calif. Born in Escondido, Calif. but fighting out of Los Angeles, Arreola has long been one of the most feared punchers in the heavyweight division.
