TITLE CONTENDER JONES SPITTING FIRE AHEAD OF MAIN EVENT WITH UNDEFEATED HARVEY

Bangor, Maine (Janvier 27, 2019) – Similar to his scheduled opponent in the February 1st main event of New England Fights’ “NEF 37: SUB ZERO,” card at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor, Maine, Bill “Jonesi” Jones is known as a hardworking entrepreneur that is focused on getting ahead in life.

As Jones himself recently stated bluntly: “I’m on a mission to get rich.”

Jones’ opponent for Friday night, undefeated hammer Josh “Hook-On” Harvey, is also known within the Penobscot County region where he resides as a sun-up to sun-down grinder that doesn’t stop until he crams 25-hours worth of work into a 24-hour day.

That is where their similarities end, cependant.

In the lead-in to their fight, Jones has been vocal in his predictions that he will finish Harvey quickly by knocking him out in the first round if the fight stays standing.

Harvey, d'autre part, has been relatively quiet before their five-round Featherweight Championship bout.

Jones was at it again recently when he joined Craig Allen onFight Night Picks to talk about his upcoming showdown with Harvey.

“I think Harvey likes to look good,” Jones stated. “I think he likes to protect his face and look pretty. Si, I think when I start smashing on him, he’s going to cover up and bail out really quick.”

The lone blemish on Harvey’s record-to-date came back in November when he fought to a draw withThe Ultimate Fighter finalist Joe Giannetti at a show in Massachusetts. Many in attendance felt that Harvey won the bout.

Jones, pendant ce temps, saw the fight and wasn’t impressed with Harvey’s performance.

"[Harvey’s fight with] Giannetti was more of a hugging match,” Jones told Allen. “Two guys just kind-of hanging on to each other for 15-minutes, no damage done. I’m going to throw down and fire until there’s no more bullets to come out. It’s going to be exciting, J'ai hâte. "

At 40-years old, Jones knows that age eventually gets the better of every combat sports athlete and that, de façon réaliste, he’s looking at his final few fights. Fully aware of this, Jones is pleased to be finishing out his career back home with New England Fights.

“It’s good to bring it back home toward the end of my career,” Jones stated. “It will be nice to bang out Harvey here and maybe get that fight with Lacey, like they were talking about, and close it out with him. We’ll see where it goes.”

“It’s not about the money for me anymore—it’s not about the sponsors. It’s about the competition,” Jones concluded. “I want to go out there and kick some more ass. I make plenty of money doing my day job, so it is what it is—let’s go beat people up.”

CONTENDER BILL JONES ON JOSH HARVEY: “HE’S A PRETTY BOY THAT DOESN’T WANT TO GET HURT”

Bill “Jonesi” Jones has seen and done it all during a decorated mixed martial arts (MMA) career that spans back more than a decade. Sur Février 1st, he’ll look to add another noteworthy accomplishment to his deep fight resume when he faces highly touted, undefeated prospect Josh “Hook-On” Harvey for the New England Fights (NEF) professional Featherweight Championship in the main event at “NEF 37: SUB ZERO” in Bangor, Maine. Jones recently discussed his storied record and his upcoming championship bout with Ryan Jarrell and Bryan Stackpole on the Between Rounds Radio Podcast.

Jones made his MMA debut in September 2007. Over the course of more than 20-bouts, he fought and defeated a who’s-who of New England’s top-tier combat sports athletes, including multiple opponents that went on to compete in the world’s largest promotions such as the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), Ligue des combattants professionnels (formally known as WSOF), et Bellator. Jones holds wins over UFC veterans Matt Bessette and Tateki Matsuda. It’s this experience against high-level competition that Jones believes will give him an edge over Harvey on February 1st.

“I’ve won fights and I’ve lost fights in the Northeast, but a good portion of my fights were top contenders at 155 or 145,” Jones told Jarrell and Stackpole. “Harvey’s never really fought—other than his last fight that he fought to a decision and he didn’t really show anything in—he’s never fought anybody to the caliber of the guys that I’ve fought. Si, I feel really good about that going into this fight.”

“I’m going to bust ass and smash through this guy,” Jones added.

Bill made his highly anticipated debut with NEF in April 2018, finishing Matt Denning in the second round via technical knockout.

“Beating Denning pretty decisively the way I did—it felt good to get back in the win column, but it still doesn’t show me,” Jones said. “I feel like I should have beat him in the first round, not the second round.”

The win set-up Jones for a title match showdown with Aaron Lacey for the vacant professional featherweight championship in November 2018, but the bout was scrapped when Lacey sustained an injury that forced him to withdraw.

“When he backed out, I was super, extremely disappointed,” Jones explained. “I was extremely disappointed… Lacey’s more of a 145-pound fighter. Harvey, if he makes weight at 145, he is going to have a really rough night because it’s just going to be a lot of weight for him to cut. Après le premier tour, if he makes it out of it, it’s going to wear on him.”

“In my brain, I knew he [Lacey] wasn’t going to make it out of the first round with me—it was a win,” Jones continued. “It was just one of those fights where you knew, you walked in there, and you walked out victorious. I know it’s a tougher fight with Harvey, but in my mind, it’s the same fight.”

With Lacey currently on the sidelines, Lacey’s teammate, fast rising Josh “Hook-On” Harvey, agreed to step in and put his 5-0-1 record on the line against Jones in the feature fight for NEF’s 2019 return to Bangor.

“Every fight that I’ve watched him [Harvey] lutte, it seems like he comes out and tries to stand with them, but then as soon as they start throwing back, I feel like he gets nervous and shoots,” Jones said. "Donc, he flashes off like he’s a standup fighter, but then as soon as they start to attack, he instantly shoots. So that, dans mon esprit, makes me feel like he’s a pretty boy that doesn’t want to get hurt. He doesn’t want to get hit.”

“I feel like he’s going to crumble under the pace that I put on him. I’m a more of an attack, in-your-face fighter and I feel like he’s going to fold under that.”

When “Jonesi” and Hook-On” face-off on February 1st, it will be in the heart of winter in Maine, hence the title of the aptly named event, “Sub Zero.” Unlike many combat athletes that try to avoid cutting weight over the long holiday season, Jones, who works full-time during the day as a roofing foreman supervising a crew of 12 laborers, prefers competing during the winter months.

“Wintertime is always a good time for me to train,” Jones explained to Jarrell and Stackpole. “I get out of work fairly early in the wintertime. We work dark-to-dark in the summer, so I don’t get home until 6, 7, 8 o’clock—so it’s hard to make it to the gym. So winter time is a real good training schedule for me.”

Jones, who normally walks around at 155-pounds despite the admission that he normally “eats out of gas stations” when he’s not in fight camp, predicts no problems whatsoever in terms of making the championship scratch weight limit of 145-pounds. When asked, cependant, on whether he thinks his opponent will make the weight, he couldn’t express the same confidence.

“I have trouble seeing Harvey making weight for the fight,” Jones said. “I’m going to fight him either way, whatever weight he walks in at. Mais, I believe that Lacey is really the one that is in line for it. Je veux dire, Harvey hasn’t made weight for a fight at 45 dans un moment. The fight he just had with Joe-Joe [Gianetti] that he just kind-of held on to the whole time, he missed weight by four or five pounds…. He’s going to have a tough time making that weight.”

Regardless of the weight, Jones is unwavering in his belief that he has the tools to put the first loss on Harvey’s record. Harvey, not known for losing frequently in any combat sport, was also a multiple-time state champion wrestler.

“I think he’s going to try to wrestle me,” Jones said. “I think he’s going to try to take me down and win by wearing me out… If he lets it stay standing, I’ll probably knock him out in the first round.”

Having kicked a 25-year smoking habit a few years ago, Jones feels revitalized and better than ever and ready for the challenge in front of him on February 1st.

“I really want to win that belt,"Il a dit. “I’m 40-years old. Life moves on and I don’t know how many more years I got to push into the sport, but it’s a good time for me.

“I don’t look at it as a job like everybody else, or something that I dream to do,” Jones explained. «J'aime à se battre. I love the atmosphere of it, I love the competition of it.

“I want to end my career on a high note.”

ZAC RICHARD RELISHES UNDERDOG ROLE IN UPCOMING FIGHT WITH FRED LEAR

Bangor, Maine (Décembre 10, 2018) – It has been a meteoric rise through the New England Fights enterprise for Zac Richard, who will celebrate one year since he started training in the sport by fighting for the featherweight title on February 1st.

Richard, a state champion high school wrestler with three first-round stoppages to his credit since he transitioned from the mat to mixed martial arts, will face former bantamweight champion Fred Lear for the vacant 145-pound strap at NEF 37: “Sub Zero.” The fight will be held at Cross Insurance Center in Bangor.

In a recent interview with Ryan Jarrell and Bryan Stackpole for theBetween Rounds Radio Podcast, Richard noted that MMA has given him balance and structure after a tumultuous time in his personal and family life. Richard’s last fight, a 51-second stoppage of Chris Lachcik by rear naked choke, took place one day before the six-year anniversary of his sister Lacy’s death from cancer.

“Every year around this time, I always found myself making bad decisions or being down in the dumps. This year I had something to take my anger out and have all those people come out and support, so it was pretty awesome. It’s the best mindset I’ve ever been in for a fight, ce est sûr,” Richard said.

NEF co-owner and matchmaker Matt Peterson knew he had a fighter on his hands the moment Richard signed with the organization.

Anyone who thinks the opportunity is being extended too soon probably isn’t familiar with the fighter, his background or his disposition.

“After watching Zac wrestle for almost a decade, I knew that his aggressive, go-for-broke style against the toughest competition that he could find would translate well to the mixed martial arts cage,” Peterson said. “He welcomes a challenge, and he never hesitated for a second when I offered him the opportunity to face a decorated veteran, Fred Lear, for the featherweight championship.”

A graduate of Massabesic High School in Waterboro, Richard said he started training in 2018 as part of a new year’s resolution.

That journey took him an hour away to Nostos MMA in Somersworth, New Hampshire, where his dogged determination and raw talent caught the eye of none other than Devin Powell, the former NEF Lightweight Champion and current UFC (L'ultime tournoi de combat) competitor.

“On the weekends after work, I did nothing. I might go to the bar or something. I kind of felt like I was wasting my time. I used to wrestle, and that was all I did. I didn’t want to go to college and wrestle, because there was nothing I wanted to go to college for,” Richard said. “I was like, ‘I’m going to try mixed martial arts.I just walked in, started slamming people and stuff, not tapping, and after a while Devin was like, 'Hey, who are you?’ And then we kind of just hit off and started training.”

Richard said friends and family, d'abord, didn’t believe him when he told them of the connection to the local celebrity turned worldwide fighter.

“It’s crazy, telling people. They think I’m joking. Then I’ll post pictures with (Powell) on Instagram and Facebook and people start hearing about it,” Richard said. “It’s good to know you can make it. It’s good to have a coach who’s living it in the UFC. He’s fighting his heart out, getting hurt and still going. He makes some good media, so it’s pretty cool.”

Richard recently relocated by renting an apartment across the street from the gym, providing further evidence of his commitment.

Working with Powell has its privileges, but it also comes with a lighter side. Richard elicited a few laughs on the program when he relayed the story of his mentor adopting a baby pig. It’s a free-range animal, he reported, wandering the gym right along with Powell’s fighters.

“He loves that thing. When we went to Las Vegas, he was talking about it and said, ‘I’m gonna get a pig.And I’m like, 'OK, Devin. Then one day I went on Instagram and watched his story and I’m like, ‘No, he didn’t.I’d like to follow some of his footsteps, but not the pig one,” Richard said. “I’m pretty sure it’s like a teacup pig, but it’s kind of big, so guess we’ll just have to see. Hopefully he didn’t get lied to. He’s going to be kind of upset when there’s a full-grown pig running around Nostos every day.”

Richard and Lear will meet in the middle in terms of weight for their title bout.

Lear, out of Young’s MMA in Bangor hasn’t fought since his victory over Walt Shea for the 135-pound title in August 2017. Richard will come down in weight after tackling his past two outings at 155, not far below his typical walking-around weight of 160 à 165.

It will be a challenge in the cold Maine winter. Richard, who is a mechanic by trade, said his job helps him sweat out the pounds during summer.

“I’m always fluctuating. Knowing that I’ve been fighting at 155 my past two fights, I’ve been eating whatever and lifting, walking around about 165,” Richard said. “I’m used to cutting weight for wrestling. I’d like to see myself at 145 from here on out. I don’t feel the need to cut that much weight for a fight. It’s only amateurs, and I don’t know when I’ll go pro or if I’ll go pro. I just now got a strength and conditioning coach at the Brickhouse in Sanford, so we’ll see where it goes. 145 is where I see myself.”

“I know Zac’s parents, and he comes from a wonderful family. They always did everything that they could to support him, going above and beyond during his wrestling career,” Peterson said. “He’s young and athletic and has the confidence to complement his genetic gifts. Fred is an experienced champion that has faced all manner of fighters over the course of his eight MMA bouts. Both guys know how to wrestle. Both come from respected gyms. It’s a match befitting our return to Bangor in February.”

That shared wrestling background made the fight with Lear (6-2) attractive to Richard.

In addition to being on enemy territory in Lear’s hometown, Richard expects to be seen as the underdog due to the opponent’s previous title fight experience.

“I don’t really care about the noise that much. I always liked being the underdog in wrestling,” Richard said. “I’ve got nothing to lose. If his crowd ‘s there and chanting his name, peu importe. It’s just more noise.”

Richard said he has never been much for watching film of opponents, knowing that tactics can turn on a dime. He has watched two of the bouts in Lear’s archive, bien que, and both expects and craves a battle for the ages.

“I want it to go into deep water,"Il a dit. “I’ve had three fights, and not to sound cocky, but they’ve all been pretty quick. I want a war. That’s why I do it. I train all this time. I want to show my true self and get into a real fight, vous savez? I think Fred and I will be a good fight. Hopefully it lives up to the expectations I have for it.”

Lear’s year-and-a-half of inactivity is in stark contrast to Richard’s rapid-fire approach since gravitating to the sport. The newcomer hopes that won’t be held against him if he comes out on top.

“I think he’ll be fine. I hope he is. I don’t want any excuses,” Richard said. “I want it to be a straight-up fight with some highlight reels on it. Si je perds, I lose, but I’m going to go out swinging if I do.”

CALEB HALL TAKES NO SHORTCUTS IN MIXED-MARTIAL-ARTS CAREER

Bangor, Maine (Septembre 3, 2018) – There’s no evidence that Easy Street exists in the world of professional mixed-martial-arts.

If it did, it’s safe to say Caleb Hall wouldn’t be able to find it, even if he were furnished the most precise global positioning system and the unlimited kindness of strangers.

Hall is wired to fight hard, fight often, and fight against the best available competition to give himself an accurate barometer of where he stands in the sport.

That won’t change this Saturday, Septembre 8e, when he takes on C.J. Ewer in a lightweight bout at New England Fights 35: “Wicked Season.” The card will take place at Cross Insurance Center in Bangor with an opening bell time of 7 p.m.

Salle, 24, a multi-time state champion wrestler during his career at Dirigo High School, isn’t bothered that he’ll be taking on a hometown hero who has been a titleholder for the regional promotion. It seems he subscribes to pro wrestling legend Ric Flair’s mantra: To be the man, you’ve got to beat the man.

“Whoever they offer and put in front of me is who I’m going to take on,” Hall said. “It doesn’t matter to me. It’s a big fight and it’s in his hometown. That definitely makes it more interesting.”

The fight is a natural pairing for two of Maine’s top pros. Each is eager to get back into the NEF hexagon, for opposite reasons, after their results earlier this year.

Hall handled John Ortolani, a wily veteran with main-event experience on his 20-fight ledger, in an impressive April pro debut. His game well developed from a double-digit total of amateur scraps, Hall earned a submission via the rarity of a Von Flue choke at 2:16 de la manche d'ouverture.

Two months earlier, Ewer sustained his first loss in the pro cage by kneebar against Kemran Lachinov. He’s tough on home turf, cependant, as evidenced by a stoppage of Rumford’s Mike Hansen last summer.

“We have similar styles and similar games,” Hall said, “I try not to think about my opponent too much and just try to fight my fight. He’s a tough matchup no matter who he’s in there against.”

Since making his debut only a month after he crossed the legal age threshold of 18, Hall has carved out a reputation as a relentless, crowd-pleasing competitor who isn’t picky about his opponents.

That’s made life easier for NEF co-owner and matchmaker Matt Peterson, who can always count on Hall being ready for prime time near the top of the bill.

“Caleb reminds me a lot of Devin Powell, our former lightweight champion. Devin most recently won in the UFC, the largest fight promotion on the planet,” Peterson said. “Devin got to where he is through good, old-fashioned diligence – desire, dévouement, discipline and hard work. Caleb’s approach mirrors Devin’s. He’s not looking for the easy path to get where he wants to go.”

Everything else about Hall’s progression in the sport has been measured conservatively.

He toiled in the amateur ranks for more than five years, wanting to make sure that his acumen was developed and his repertoire well-balanced.

“I think I’m pretty well-rounded in every area,” Hall said, “My wrestling is still probably the strongest part of my game, but everything else is starting to catch up, like my submissions and my striking.”

Hall never budged from his amateur weight of 145 until moving up to 155 – historically NEF’s deepest and toughest pro division – for his shot at Ortolani.

He and Ewer are now jockeying for position in a class that provided great success for the likes of Powell, Bruce Boyington, Ryan Sanders, Jon Lemke and Jesse Erickson. Advancing to that fray would have been foolhardy if Hall hadn’t done things the right way physically and nutritionally.

“For me it’s been more about training and putting it on the right way. It wasn’t as hard as I thought it would be. I could still make 145, but this is a lot better for my body,” Hall said. “I was in the same weight class from the time I entered the sport when I was 18. It was a lot of weight cuts, but I was coming right out of high school wrestling where that was all part of it.”

When he fought at 145, Hall said his day-to-day weight when not in training was just shy of 170 livres. He can now comfortably carry 175 à 180 between bouts. Less last-minute dehydration is necessary to reach the lightweight limit.

“He’s on the treadmill every day. He’s logging his training hours with commitment and focus,” Peterson said. “He’s living the lifestyle. It’s guys like Caleb that really get me excited about the sport, because they show us the best stuff that human beings are made of, and they give us a glimpse of what we’re capable of as people. If Caleb Hall hits the heights that he’s set for himself – and I’m confident that he will get there – it will be because he earned it the entire way.”

Hall appreciates the perception that his fight with Ewer is a big one in the NEF title picture and beyond, but as always he is eager to steer clear of the hype.

“I had a lot of confidence going in (against Ortolani), and that hasn’t changed,” Hall said. “I see every fight as your biggest fight, de toute façon. That’s just how I try to approach it. This sport has a small window.”

Three five-minute rounds aren’t much time in the grand scheme, non plus, although it’s a grueling grind when two action fighters such as Hall and Ewer are going at it.

Despite their first-round finishes last time around, Hall won’t be surprised to see this one venture closer to the advertised distance.

“We’ll see what happens. I don’t go in there thinking I’m going to take him out,” Hall said. “I expect it to be a war. It’ll probably go deep into the second and third rounds, and we’ll see who swims.”
