Also in attendance was lightweight Ivan Redkach, who trains with Santa Cruz and will compete in an undercard bout on Outubro 14.
Aquí está o que os participantes tiñan que dicir Martes:
LEO SANTA CRUZ
Now we both get another fight first, I’m pretty sure we will both win and the fans win by seeing us again as well.
I always train the same way. I train really hard. I go out there like I’m going to fight the best opponent possible. My focus is there. You can never underestimate any fighter. Especially someone like Avalos. He has nothing to lose and everything to gain by beating me.
Fighters like that are the most dangerous. They come really prepared and I can’t afford to lose. I am going to be focused coming into Outubro 14.
If we both get the win, I want the rematch with Abner in the beginning of the year. That is going to happen so I’m not concerned about both of us taking a fight first.
I feel great and will be ready and prepared to fight 12 hard rounds on Outubro 14.
I know this will be a tough fight, every fight at this level is a tough fight.
I am coming off of two hard fights and I wanted my body to rest, but I am always ready to get in the gym and prepare to do my best. I will never take a fight lightly and I won’t on Outubro 14.
The rematch will be a very tough fight like the first, it’s better for Abner and I
to each have a fight in-between.
IVAN REDKACH
I’m very excited to fight in Southern California on a big show against a tough fighter. Estou preparado para October 14th.
This is my third fight training with the Santa Cruz family and I love training with them. They’ve taught me a great deal about defense and about throwing combinations. I feel like it’s more of a ‘Mexican Style’ para min. I feel like they have helped me become a more entertaining fighter.
This is really like a double hometown fight for me. I’ve lived in Southern California for eight years and I’ve been on a lot of Leo’s cards, so I will be in my second home with my second family.
JOSE SANTA CRUZ, O pai de Leo & Adestrador
Avalos is a very tough fighter, if we fight Mares we want a tough fight first to get ready.
I know Mares and Leo will put on a great fight and both need to be prepared for the rematch.
We’re working on tighter defense and better ring generalship in this camp.
In the first Frampton fight Leo wasn’t quite ready, we don’t want to make the same mistake again.
TOM BROWN, Presidente da TGB Promocións
Leo just went 24 action-packed rounds with the 2016 Loitador do Ano [Carl Frampton]. He has been in nothing but slugfest fights with 3 out of his last 4 fights ending in a majority decision, and don’t count out Chris Avalos one bit because he can crack. That is the last thing you want. Avalos is motivated and he needs a win.
“”When Steve Farhood [of SHOWTIME Sports] did his 2016 10 best one-punch knockouts in the history of ShoBox, Chris Avalos was on there because he has that one-punch knockout power.
Avalos has one punch knockout power and that’s the kind of guy you have to be very careful with.
Three of the last four ‘Fight of the Yearmatches have taken place at the StubHub Center, and they weren’t always ‘Fight of the Yearcandidates going in. Something just happens there and fans won’t want to miss this.

Here is what the participants had to say Tuesday:
LEO SANTA CRUZ
Hopefully I can come out victorious and then face all of the big names. I want to rematch Mares and Carl Frampton then unify the division. I’m going to be ready to face anyone.
Some fighters when they take long layoffs feel a little bit rusty. I wanted to get in there and test my body and see how I feel heading into the bigger fights in the future.
Chris Avalos is a tough fighter. Ten 20 knockouts so I’m not going to underestimate him. Up there in the ring anything can happen. I’m going to be smart, be patient and do what I have to do to win the fight.
I’ve known Avalos since the amateurs. I beat him the one time we fought but it was a really good, close fight. We went toe-to-toe. He definitely thought he had won the fight. They’ve wanted a rematch since the amateurs.
I’m very happy to be back fighting here in Southern California. I owe all of this to me team and all the fans who make this possible. I love fighting here and I’m going to give you a great show.
A lot of people think this will be easy for me, but I don’t see it that way. I’ve been in there with him so I know. I’ll never underestimate an opponent. Anyone who gets in that ring with me is dangerous.
Avalos has good power that I have to be prepared for. I’m really focused on beating him. We both like to come forward so I’m thinking it’s going to be a war.
If I can get the win, I’m going to rematch Abner Mares. It was a really close fight the first time and I think the fans will really enjoy the rematch, especially now that he’s working with Robert Garcia.
CHRIS AVALOS
I’m not a big talker but I’m ready for this battle. Vai ser unha loita boa. Esta vai ser unha guerra. I like going toe-to-toe and so does he.
I think fighting close to home is exciting, but it doesn’t matter where the fight is. I think there is certain motivation to do better. I have been working hard in this training camp for this fight.
My last world title fight I wasn’t really focused. I was running around with the wrong crowd. I am more focused. I stopped talking to everyone I used to. I am a new person. I am a new fighter. Seeing this opportunity in front of me is a blessing. Estou realmente animado para esta loita.
We did spar in the past and I’ve been wanting to fight him. We aren’t enemies by any means, but it has been forever that I have been waiting for this opportunity.
I have a lot of tactics on how to fight him strategy wise. It is going to be a good fight and I appreciate they gave me the opportunity.
We are going to see the best Chris Avalos. I am going to bring the best. It is going to be a fight to remember.
Abner Mares
Andres Gutierrez is a tough fighter and he’s only got one defeat. He’s no tune-up fight. He’s going to give me a good fight. I’m going to learn a lot and try to make the best of it and put on the best performance that I can.
Leo and I have two tough opponents in front of us. My opponent was ready to fight Carl Frampton and Richard even said that he thought Gutierrez was going to win that fight. I’ve been training hard for this fight because we all know that young fighters like Gutierrez are warriors.
Gutierrez is no easy test, but he doesn’t have the talent that I have. He doesn’t have the heart that I have. He doesn’t have the corner that I have. I’m going to come out victorious and give the fans a good fight.
I’m excited to be back fighting in Southern California to perform in front of my fans. I think that Robert Garcia brought the best out of me and we’re going to continue to shine on October 14.
Having the new relationship with Robert Garcia has really changed my career and given me a whole new outlook. It’s made me a better fighter. I’m more mature and I still feel fast and strong.
I’m excited to show-off a new Abner Mares. I say this before most of my fights but it’s really true. I’m always learning more and you will be able to see it in the ring when I defend my title.
I’ve been sparring a lot of young guys and it’s got me feeling great in the gym. I can still hang with the 18 and 19-year-olds coming out of the amateurs. So I’m feel rejuvenated heading into this fight.
Richard Schaefer, Presidente & CEO de Ringstar Sports
This is a great fight card on October the 14 de StubHub Center, en Carson, California. Los Angeles has clearly become the fight capital of the world. Not only do we have several world champions making Los Angeles their home, but we really have some of the best venues and the absolute best fight fans.
This is a great doubleheader. Double trouble I have been calling it. Two of the most recognized names in the sport. Two Mexican-American world champions defending their world titles. This is going to be a special night for fight fans.
This is amazing to have these two fights live on a major network like FOX, and also on FOX Deportes. The StubHub Center is nicknamed theWar Groundsand I really can’t remember a bad fight at the venue. It truly brings out the best of the fighters.

Leo Santa Cruz and Abner Mares are two of the best featherweight champions in boxing and to have them both fighting on the same card is a treat for boxing fans,” dixo Tom Brown, Presidente da TGB Promocións. “Against Avalos, Santa Cruz will have the opportunity to demonstrate why he’s considered one of the most skilled and durable fighters in the division and in his first defense since winning the title Mares can expect a rugged challenge from Gutierrez, who has only lost once in his career and by a close decision.
This is going to be a jam-packed afternoon of can’t-miss action for boxing fans in Southern California,” dixo Richard Schaefer, Presidente & CEO de Ringstar Sports. “StubHub Center brings out the best in fighters and I expect that to continue when Leo Santa Cruz and Abner Mares defend their titles against two hungry challengers in Chris Avalos and Andres Gutierrez. Chamada Star Sports, along with TGB Promotions, are looking forward to putting together an exciting card full of future stars and compelling bouts for the great fans at StubHub Center and watching on FOX and FOX Deportes.
Santa Cruz (33-1-1, 18 Kos) established himself as one of the top featherweights in the world in matches against Mares and Carl Frampton. Cruz lost a close decision to Frampton in 2016 and avenged the loss with a decision victory on Xan. 28 en Las Vegas. The 29-year-old was unbeaten in his first 33 pro fights on his way to world titles at 118, 122 and 126-pounds. With a victory over Avalos, Santa Cruz, que loita fóra dos Ánxeles, will cement his hold on featherweight supremacy and stay on the path to that showdown with Mares.
I’m excited to get back in the ring,” dixo Santa Cruz. “I’ve been working hard in camp and it’s great to be back in the gym. Chris Avalos is a tough contender who’s fought the best in the division. I love my fans and I’m planning on giving them a great show. I never overlook any opponent, but my plan is to put on a great performance, and then give fans more exciting fights against Abner Mares and Carl Frampton. I’m ready to prove I’m the best featherweight in the world.
Fighting out of Lancaster, California, Avalos (27-5, 20 Kos) will be vying for a featherweight title for the first time. He came up short in his other world championship bout, losing the 122-pound world championship Carl Frampton via knockout in 2015. Na súa loita máis recente, Avalos scored a TKO victory over Miguel Flores when the fight was stopped on cuts in the fifth round on Xullo 18 in the main event on FS1 and FOX Deportes.
I grew up with Leo Santa Cruz, so I know how to fight him,” said Avalos. “We did a lot of sparring wearing headgear as amateurs, and I put a hurting on him back in the day. I’m not scared. Estou preparado para loitar. I know in the back of his mind, he’ll be thinking about that. I know I’m the underdog, but I’m not scared. I have a game plan and I know I’m going to win. I’ve fought two champions and lost to Carl Frampton and Oscar Valdez, but I’m a much better fighter and I’m more focused now than I was for those fights. I’ve got the opportunity I’ve been waiting for and I’m going to take full advantage of it.
Nais (30-2-1, 15 Kos) has fought some of the best competition between the 118-126 pound divisions and has claimed world titles in three different weight classes during his pro career. The 31-year-old climbed back into the championship ranks in December of 2016 by dropping featherweight Jesus Cuellar in a hard-fought, narrow decision victory. Nacido en Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico and fighting out of Robert Garcia’s gym in Riverside, Calif., Mares has taken down former champions Daniel Ponce De Leon, Joseph Agbeko and Anselmo Moreno in a career that dates back to his time representing Mexico at the 2004 Xogos Olímpicos.
I’m excited to be getting back in the ring on October 14 at StubHub in Los Angeles on FOX and FOX Deportes,” Mares said. “My fans will once again see the boxing style and strength that won me my WBA Featherweight title in December. Eu son máis forte, faster and committed to keeping that title and taking the others. My opponent is a strong challenger and we will bring an action filled fight for boxing fans. I am the people’s warrior and a boxer they can believe in. You don’t want to miss this fight.
The 24-year-old Gutierrez (35-1-1, 25 Kos) suffered the first loss of his career when he dropped a narrow decision to tough veteran Cristian Mijares last year. That interrupted a 16-fight win streak that included nine knockouts and began after he fought to a draw with Jesus Ruiz in 2011. Gutierrez, de Guadalajara, Jalisco, México, was set to fight Carl Frampton in a title eliminator in July, but the fight was called off when Gutierrez fell in his bathroom in Belfast, Ireland and broke his nose, lost two teeth and cut his chin.
I am coming to destroy Abner Mares,” said Gutierrez. “I am in great shape and I’m very hungry to get in the ring and prove I’m one of the best in the world. I will be world champion and reach my dreams onOutubro 14.”

LOS ANGELES (Decembro. 10, 2016) - Abner Mares (30-2-1, 15 Kos) scored an impressive, upset 12-round split decision over defending champion Jesus Cuellar (28-2, 21 Kos) to capture the WBA Featherweight World Championship and become a four-time boxing titlist Sábado in the main event of a SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING doubleheader.

In the co-feature from Galen Center on the campus of USC in Los Angeles, Jermall Charlo (25-0, 19 Kos) retained his IBF Junior Middleweight World title with an emphatic fifth-round knockout over previously unbeaten, top-ranked Julian "J-Rock" Williams (22-1-1, 14 Kos). Earlier in the day on SHOWTIME, unbeaten IBF Heavyweight World Champion Anthony Joshua (18-0, 18 Kos) nocauteado Eric Molina (25-4, 19 Kos), de Weslaco, Texas, in the third round in Manchester, Inglaterra. (Esto en vídeo: http://s.sho.com/2hqHTo8)

Nais, de Huntington Beach, Calif., by way of Guadalajara, México, was victorious by the scores of 117-110, 116-111 e 112-115. Judge Kermit Bayless was the lone descender to score the hard-fought match for the Argentine. Mares scored the bout’s lone knockdown in the 11th round. Cuellar, de Bos Aires, had an 11-fight winning streak end. (Esto en vídeo: http://s.sho.com/2hbJayp)

Nais, making his first start en 16 meses and first with renowned trainer Robert Garcia, executed a technically sound game plan and was the more accurate puncher than Cuellar, who was under the tutelage of Hall of Famer Freddie Roach for the first time in his career.

“I feel so good, it’s been a long time. I’m champion, bebé,’’ said Mares, 31, a former WBC featherweight and super bantamweight world champion and IBF bantamweight world champion, who became Garcia’s 10th campión mundial. “We had the perfect game plan.

“I never doubted myself. I felt it in my heart. When I fought León (Santa Cruz) I beat myself because I fought the wrong fight. I fought smart esta noite. I thought it would be a unanimous decision, but at the end of the day I’m champion.’’

Cuellar is known as a devastating puncher, but he was unable to land his power shots or cut off the ring against Mares, who seemingly pocketed rounds with accuracy and a solid left hook. Mares floored Cuellar with a straight right in the opening minute of the 11th, sending Cuellar to the canvas for the third time of his career. The onslaught continued, with a resurgent Mares teeing off on Cuellar until he raised his hands following the final bell.

“They said he was a power puncher, they said he was going to knock me out, but I proved that I have some power, moi,’’ said Mares, who dropped a majority 12-round decision to Santa Cruz in his last fight on Aug. 29, 2015. “I want Leo, Quería (Carl) Frampton, I want anyone. I’m a champion. I’m not afraid of anyone.”

Cuellar stated his case for a rematch afterward.

“I thought the fight was pretty even until he threw me down, and that’s when he took control,", Dixo Cuellar, que facía a súa terceira defensa do título. “He definitely had the boxing skills going today. I would have preferred a rough fight, but Mares had his skills today. Quero un desquite. I gave him the opportunity and now I think it’s fair that he gives it to me.”

No co-main event, Charlo dropped Williams three times, once in the second and twice in the fifth. Williams, who had not lost a round in 10 pelexas consecutivas, went down for the first time in his career from a strong counter left-hand midway through the second round.

Williams, who established his counter right early, performed well for the next two rounds in the first title fight between undefeated 154-pound champions since Floyd Mayweather dismantled Canelo Alvarez en 2013.

But Charlo decked him again with a brutal right uppercut midway through the fifth round that sent Williams collapsing face-forward onto the canvas. Williams got up, but he was clearly in trouble. Charlo floored him seconds layer with a left hook, forcing referee Wayne Hedgepath to instantly halt the contest at 2:06.

Charlo was ahead with scores of 38-37 on the three scorecards entering the fifth round in a highly skilled matchup between two fighters in their prime.

Afterward a fracas broke out in the ring between the fighters and their cornermen after Charlo wouldn’t acknowledge Williams’ congratulatory hand shake. Williams immediately stormed from the ring. The fans booed Charlo loudly throughout his post-fight interview with SHOWTIME reporter Jim Gray.

“I did what I was supposed to do, Estou moi feliz co meu rendemento, I listened to my trainer,’’ said Charlo, the identical twin brother of WBC 154-pound titlist Jermell Charlo. “I trained hard for this fight, I stayed in the gym the whole time.

“No matter what, people have to respect my accomplishments. He just wasn’t on my level. I told everyone what I was going to do since the fight was announced. I knew I was going to win; he was badly hurt after the knockdown.

“I just want to tell Julian Williams, Sintoo. Leading up to this fight Julian talked, and I held it in. I did what I had to do to become the champion of the world and I deserve my respect. He disrespected me all the way up to the fight. I made the fight happen; I gave the fans what they wanted to see. I stayed at 154 libras, although I do want to move up to 160, just to fight someone the world said I couldn’t beat.

“I said I don’t want your congratulations; I want your apology. I don’t care what they say, I knocked him out. No matter what they say about me I’m going to continue to work hard. I did what my trainer told me to do, I stayed in there and bang the shot came home. I’m never disrespected this dude, Nunca, until I knocked him out.

“Yes, Quero unificar. I want to prove I’m the best junior middleweight in the world, none of them are on my level.

Williams offered no excuses. “I just got caught,’ he said. “I was fine after the second round and kept going. El só me colleu. He wasn’t too big. El só me colleu.

“I didn’t care about any of that [post-fight drama]. I just wanted to win.”

Charlo-Williams was the fourth 154-pound title fight on SHOWTIME in 2016.

In one off the fights streamed earlier Sábado on FACEBOOK LIVE, Sergey Lipinets (11-0, 9 Kos) nocauteado Lenny Zappavigna(35-3, 25 Kos) to become the mandatory challenger for the IBF Junior Welterweight World Title.

After flooring Zappavigna midway through the fourth, Lipinets finished off the Australian with an overhand right in the eighth in a closely contested and bloody affair.

“Yes, this was my toughest fight, it’s bloody and rugged but no problem for me,’’ Lipinets said. “This was an eliminator and now I want my next fight to be for the world championship. Julius Indogo has the IBF title and now I’m the mandatory.

“I’m very happy with my performance. We’ve worked on adjusting during fights and that worked very well for me esta noite. I was hoping for the knockout but my trainer said to keep working and the stoppage will come.”

“I left it all in the ring,’’ Zappavigna said. “I fought my heart out and I came here to give it my best. Even though I’m disappointed with the loss, I am at peace with the result because I know I couldn’t have done anything else.

“I wish Sergey all the best in his world title fight.

“I know my fans are behind me and I’m bringing pride back to Australia. I know I was in control of the fight, but my Australian ‘white line feverkicked in and I tried to take his head off.”

In the opening bout on Facebook Live, talented undefeated middleweight Erickson Lubin (17-0, 12 Kos) knocked out previously once-beaten Juan Ubaldo Cabrera (23-2, 15 Kos) en 2:09 da segunda rolda.

“He was a little awkward in the first round,’’ Erickson said. “I set him up with my jab and I knew I hurt him in the second. That’s when I knew it was time for him to go.

I think that fight definitely proves that I’m in the discussion as one of the top up and comers in the sport, but I don’t feel any pressure. I’m back in the gym o luns.

I want to be undisputed champion. I want all of the belts. Give me the Charlos, Julian Williams, any of them.

I’ll take whoever is in front of me next, but those names and put them in bold letters and you know I’ll be front and center for that Charlo-Williams fight.

The SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING doubleheader and SHOWTIME INTERNATIONAL telecast will re-air on Monday, Decembro. 12, 10 p.m. ET/PT en SHOWTIME EXTREME. The fights were promoted by Ringstar Sports and TGB Promotions and sponsored by Corona.
