BETHLEHEM, PA. (June 29, 2016) – Former title challenger Edner Cherry (35-7-2, 19 KOs) defeated contender Lydell Rhodes (23-2-1, 11 KOs) by unanimous decision (98-92, 97-93 X 2) in a 10-round super featherweight main event of Premier Boxing Champions TOE-TO-TOE TUESDAYS on FS1 and BOXEO DE CAMPEONES from Sands Bethlehem Events Center in Bethlehem, Pa.
Cherry, of Wauchula, Fla. who trains out of St. Pete Boxing Club with welterweight champion Keith Thurman, got off to an early lead in the second round, landing a left that stumbled Rhodes briefly.
A former football standout and wrestler in high school, who has competed in both boxing and mixed martial arts professionally, Oklahoma City’s Rhodes made the fight physical and ugly early.
Rhodes said, “He held and a lot which made it tough to get in a rhythm.”
“He was slick,” answered Cherry. “So I held because I didn’t want him to get in those quick shots.”
A sloppy round five saw both fighters slip to the canvas, but neither was ruled a knockdown. What became a wrestling match continued rounds six through 10, with clinching and grappling throughout.
Moments before the final bell, Cherry stunned Rhodes, cementing what would become his unanimous victory.
Cherry said, “I thought it was a great fight. I was in a tough fight tonight and I am glad to come out with the victory.”
A discontented Rhodes expressed, “It was a heck of a fight. I wanted to back him up in the later rounds but he was strong. It was an ugly fight, but I believe I won. I don’t agree with the decision. Nothing more, nothing less.”
Cherry concluded, “Training and sparring with Keith (Thurman) was great. He’s so strong and it helped me in this fight. We were both training for big fights at the same time and it helped me increase my strength and pick up this win tonight, without a doubt.”
Televised coverage kicked off with unbeaten Omar “Super O” Douglas (17-0, 12 KOs) stopping Cuban Alexei “The Hurricane” Collado (19-2, 17 KOs) in the seventh round of their scheduled 10-round super featherweight bout.
A fast-rising star out of Wilmington, Delaware, Douglas jumped out to an early lead, controlling the action in the first frame. Douglas continued moving Collado around the ring in round two, forcing a frustrated Collado to clinch, which resulted in both fighters awkwardly stumbling to the canvas.
The Miami native Collado came out aggressive in rounds three and four, outworking Douglas and winning him the pair of rounds on all three judges’ scorecards.
However, Douglas settled in throughout rounds five and six. His jabs to the body proving an effective deterrent to Collado’s aggression and furious pace he displayed in the earlier rounds.
The end came in the seventh round as Douglas landed a left hook to Collado’s head that stumbled Collado, forcing him to take a knee and never get back up.
“I noticed that he has his head in the middle and that is unusual for a tall guy,” said Douglas. “So I was focusing on the right hand up the middle. I was able to finish him with a hard right, left, right combination.”
Collado acknowledged, “He hit me with a good left hook and that broke my nose. I feel it was a close fight though, and I was in the fight up until he got me, but he is a good fighter.”
Douglas agreed with Collado’s assessment of the competition adding, “It was a tough fight, but I had a great camp and that showed tonight. I think I need one or two more of these kinds of fights and I will be ready for a title shot.”
The second televised bout showcased unbeaten prospect Antonio Russell (7-0, 5 KOs) securing a unanimous decision (60-54, 59-55 X 2) victory over Jamaica’sRudolph Hedge (10-4-3, 4 KOs) in a six-round super bantamweight showdown.

A two-time Olympian representing the Dominican Republic, Diaz Jr. won a gold medal at his second Olympic games in 2008 in Beijing. Now fighting out of the Bronx, the 32-year-old increased the level of his competition with victories over Emmanuel Lartey, Adrian Granados and Gabriel Bracero before giving former champion Lamont Peterson all he could handle in losing a majority decision last October.
Ghvamichava will look to rebound from a defeat in his last bout after riding a five-fight win streak that had dated back to 2013. The 30-year-old took down previously unbeaten fighters Jonathan Garcia and Chris Singleton in 2014 and followed it up with triumphs over Cameron Kreal and Cosme Rivera in 2015. Originally from Poti, Georgia, Ghvamichava now trains out of Hayward, California.
Fighting out of Long Beach, California, McAllister turned pro in December 2014 and has knocked out every opponent he’s faced. The 25-year-old stayed busy in 2015 as he picked up five victories before making his 2016 debut with a third round knockout of Tyrone Selders in January. He takes on the Goias, Brazil-native Pereira who will make his second start in the U.S. and most recently stopped Humberto Conceicao in March.
A 22-year-old from Milwaukee, but now fighting out of Las Vegas, Hill turned pro in August 2014 and has yet to be defeated. He began 2016 by defeating Tavorus Teague in a six-round bout in February. He takes on the 23-year-old Hernandez who turned pro in 2013 and has also yet to taste defeat. The Fresno-native picked up three victories in 2015.

Cherry, of Wauchula, Fla., is a former world title challenger who is 10-1 since 2009.  His only blemishes since 2007 are losses to Timothy Bradley and Paulie Malignaggi at 140-pounds and his title challenge last October against Jose Pedraza in which he dropped a split decision. Cherry, who was born in the Bahamas, owns victories over Vicente Escobedo, Monte Meza Clay and Wes Ferguson and will look to take down a contender on his way to another title shot.
A multi-sport athlete who has competed in both boxing and mixed martial arts professionally, Oklahoma City’s Rhodes looks to rebound on June 28 from his first blemish at the hands of unbeaten Sergey Lipinets. The 28-year-old recorded four victories in 2014 including triumphs over Miguel Angel Huerta and John Nater before fighting to a draw in 2015 with Jared Robinson in addition to the fight with Lipinets.
An undefeated fighter out of Wilmington, Delaware, Douglas impressed in the TOE-TO-TOE TUESDAYS main event in December 2015 when he defeated contender Frank De Alba in a step up fight. The 24-year-old had already beaten Daniel Attah in 2015 and previously took down veterans Anthony Napunyi, Jean Javier Sotelo and Osnel Charles and he will again fight strong competition as he seeks a world title shot in the near future.
Fighting out of Miami but originally from Cuba, Collado turned pro in 2008 and was victorious in his first 18 pro bouts before a decision loss in 2014. The 28-year-old owns victories over veterans Edgar Riovalle, Franklin Varela and Jose Saez and most recently stopped Gyci Lorenzo in February.

SAN ANTONIO (May 29, 2016) – Former world champion Miguel “Titere” Vazquez (36-5, 13 KOs) defeated Ecuador’s Erick Bone (16-4, 8 KOs) in a 10-round battle that headlined Premier Boxing Champions on FS1 and FOX Deportes Saturday night from the Dancehall in San Antonio.
The former champion from Mexico worked behind a strong jab and brought the fight to Bone throughout the main event. Bone was able to return fire and was effective at times when countering.
The jab of Vazquez eventually led to success with the right hand that was able to hurt his opponent and keep the battle-tested Bone from building momentum.
Both fighters landed at a nearly identical rate as Vazquez connected on 22 percent of his punches while Bone landed 21 percent. However, it was Vazquez with the advantage in punches landed at 94 to 74.
The fight featured many close rounds, which was reflected by the varied scores of the judges. In the end, all three had the fight for Vazquez by scores of 99-91, 97-93 and 96-94.
In the co-main event, rising featherweight Miguel Flores (20-0, 9 KOs) kept his record perfect as he defeated Mexican veteran Ruben Tamayo (26-9-4, 18 KOs) in their 10-round bout.
Facing a southpaw for the first time as a professional, Flores had some trouble early with the game Tamayo who was able to penetrate the defense of the 23-year-old with left hands while also opening a cut with an accidental head butt in round two.
As the fight went on Flores showed improved movement and a variety of effective punches that allowed him to take control of the fight. Most notably, Flores used a bruising left hook to the body that left Tamayo marked up and slowed down his offense.
Both fighters threw over 550 punches but it was Flores who out landed his opponent 175-121. The judges rewarded the still undefeated fighter with the unanimous decision by scores of 100-90 and 98-92 twice.

MIGUEL VAZQUEZ
“I wanted to throw the heavier punches because I thought I could win by knockout, but that didn’t happen. There was an overhand right in the eighth round that I thought hurt him badly.
“He was an elusive fighter and survived, so there are still things that I have to work on.
“There was some difficulty adjusting to the late opponent switch, but overall, no problem. I had been sparring southpaws as well as right-handers.
“If I could have followed up on some of the hooks and overhand rights, I could have gotten him out of there.
“I’ve always wanted to fight Adrien Broner. I want to make that.”
ERICK BONE
“Vazquez was awkward and hard to fight. I gave it my all in there.
“I’m thankful for the opportunity and I’m looking forward to getting back in the gym and working on some things before I return to the ring.”

An undefeated fighter from Michoacan, Mexico, but fighting out of Houston, Flores has not lost since turning pro in 2009 at just 17-years-old. The 23-year-old had a big 2015 beginning in May with a victory over German Meraz and followed up by wins against Juan Ruiz, Carlos Padilla and Alfred Tetteh. He started 2016 with a headlining win over Mario Briones at The Dancehall in January. Now he will take on the 27-year-old Tamayo of Sonora, Mexico. The southpaw has wins over veterans including Meraz and Jose Cayetano and he challenged Jesus Cuellar for a world title in 2014.

Bone replaces Felix Diaz, who was forced to withdraw from the bout due to injury. Bone will return to 140-pounds after challenging Shawn Porter and Chris Algieri at welterweight in 2015.

The 29-year-old Vazquez had a successful reign as 135-pound champion and defended his title eight times during his championship run. After beating Ji-Hoon Kim for his title, he would go on to defend it against the likes of Denis Shafikov, Mercito Gesta, Leonardo Zappavigna and Ammeth Diaz. The 26-year-old Bone has fought in the U.S. since 2014 and began his career stateside with victories over Francisco Figueroa, Mahonri Montes and Peter Oluoch. Born in Manabi, Ecuador, Bone won the first 12 bouts of his career. His most recent losses have come at welterweight and against former world champions. Now, he returns to the 140-pound division where he picked up a South American title in 2012.

CARLTON, MN. (May 18, 2016) – Unbeaten cruiserweight contender Murat “Iron” Gassiev (23-0, 17 KOs) scored a sensational knockout victory over Jordan Shimmell (20-2, 16 KOs) in the main event of Premier Boxing Champions TOE-TO-TOE TUESDAYS on FS1 and BOXEO DE CAMPEONES on FOX DeportesTuesday night from Black Bear Casino Resort in Carlton, MN in the Otter Creek Event Center.
Gassiev delivered a powerful left hook that put Shimmell out on the mat and halted the cruiserweight title elimination bout immediately at 2:54 of the first round. Shimmell was able to move effectively for much of the round and had landed an early combination that got the attention of Gassiev.
The Russian fighter, who now trains in California with Abel Sanchez, was able to start working through the defense of Shimmell with his jab as the round wore on. The final blow came after Gassiev imitated a right hand and delivered the critical left hook while Shimmell was caught counter-punching.
The co-main event of the night saw local favorite Joey “Minnesota Ice” Abell (32-9, 30 KOs) deliver a dominant performance in knocking out previously unbeaten Wes Nofire (19-1, 15 KOs) in their heavyweight showdown.
The former title challenger bothered Nofire early and often from his southpaw stance and was successful with his left hand throughout the fight. Abell snuck in a strong right hook in round two that stunned Nofire before he delivered multiple left hooks to score the early knockdown.
Nofire tried to weather the storm but a big right hand from Abell again put Nofire down early in the third round. Nofire almost made it out of the round but Abell’s power in the left hand proved to be too much as a series of strong shots sent Nofire down for the final time before his corner stopped the fight.
Abell could hardly miss as he connected on 42 percent of his punches on his way to the stoppage at 2:12 of the third round.
In the opening bout, St. Louis heavyweight Stephan Shaw (7-0, 5 KOs) earned a shutout unanimous decision over Washington, D.C.’s Danny Kelly (9-3-1, 8 KOs) in their six-round bout.
Shaw controlled the action with superior boxing skills and strong combinations throughout the fight. Kelly had some success targeting the body of Shaw but was unable to maintain a consistently effective attack.
The punch stats were in line with the judges’ scores of 60-54 as Shaw out landed Kelly 95 to 56 while connecting at 34 percent mark to Kelly’s 23 percent.

MURAT GASSIEV
“I was trying to set up the final punch. I imitated the right overhand so that I could come back with the left hook. It was a combination that we practiced.
“It wasn’t the most powerful punch but I snapped it pretty well. I was ready to keep going but that punch was enough.
“I’ve trained hard and been improving my skills. I’m going to work and get ready for my title shot.
“I am extremely happy he got up and I hope he is okay. I never want to hurt anybody; I just want to win the fight.”
JORDAN SHIMMELL
“I got caught. Gassiev has power. It was a clean shot and I got hit, it is what it is.
“He’s a really good fighter with power. I’ll be back. It was a learning experience.”
JOEY ABELL
“I did this for myself. I wanted so see where I was at. I’m a different fighter when I have time to train.
“I’m going to give it some time to think about the next step. Right now I want to fight for the rest of my life, but if I got beat It would be different.
“This is exactly what I planned. I thought I might get him in the first round but I took my time. My punches were sharp. There were times in the past where I felt my timing was off but I’m in great shape so I wasn’t thinking about getting tired.”
WES NOFIRE
“I just didn’t get the shots I was looking for. I thought I was going to be able to back him up more with my jab. He stayed his distance and lunged in from out of range.
“One of the head butts caught me pretty good and I just couldn’t see what he was coming back with.
“The head butts were giving me problems and he followed up on me after them. He was a little stronger than I expected but I’ve been hit hard like that by other fighters.
“I’m disappointed. I trained really hard for the fight. I’ve never had a problem taking power before. It’s just one of those things that happens in everybody’s career, but I’ll be back.”
STEPHAN SHAW
“I felt great in there. It felt good to be victorious in my first fight on PBC. I fought a guy with a lot of experience and did what I had to do.
“I’m the best kept secret in America. That’s my motto.”
DANNY KELLY
“I started too late. I was working behind my jab but I didn’t do enough behind it. I gave it my all.
“He only hurt me once, with a right hand in the fourth round. I didn’t think he had speed but I should have start earlier.”

The May 17 event is headlined by a cruiserweight world title eliminator between unbeaten knockout artist Murat “Iron” Gassiev and hard-hitting Jordan Shimmell. Televised coverage begins at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT and features a heavyweight showdown between unbeaten Wes Nofire (and former title challenger and Minnesota-native Joey “Minnesota Ice” Abell.

A decorated amateur, Shaw won the 2013 USA and PAL National Championships in addition to being a semifinalist in that year’s National Golden Gloves tournament. The 23-year-old from St. Louis turned pro later that year and has knocked out four of his five professional opponents since then. He takes on the 24-year-old Kelly from Washington, D.C. who enters this fight the winner of three of his last four tilts.

SAN ANTONIO (May 5, 2016) – Olympic Gold medalist Felix Diaz (17-1, 8 KOs) and former world champion Miguel “Titere” Vazquez (35-5, 13 KOs) will meet in a 10-round battle of super lightweight contenders that headlines Premier Boxing Champions(PBC) on FS1 and FOX Deportes from the Dancehall in San Antonio on Saturday, May 28 with televised coverage beginning at 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT. This marks the first Saturday primetime PBC card on FS1 and FOX Deportes and anchors an action-packed memorial day weekend.

A two-time Olympian representing the Dominican Republic, Diaz Jr. won a gold medal at his second Olympic games in 2008 in Beijing. Now fighting out of the Bronx, the 32-year-old increased the level of his competition with victories over Emmanuel Lartey, Adrian Granados and Gabriel Bracero before giving former champion Lamont Peterson all he could handle in losing a majority decision last October. Now he moves back to 140-pounds looking to make noise and grab a world title.
The 29-year-old Vazquez had a successful reign as 135-pound champion and defended his title eight times during his championship run. After beating Ji-Hoon Kim for his title, he would go on to defend it against the likes of Denis Shafikov, Mercito Gesta, Leonardo Zappavigna and Ammeth Diaz.
