Murphys Boxing is proud to announce that the next recipient of the Warrior’s Code Award will be New England boxing legend, ‘Iceman’ John Scully.
The Hartford, Connecticut based Scully was one of the most popular fighters in the region during the 1990s and he went 38-11 in a professional career in the light heavyweight division that included challenging for the world title against Henry Maske in Germany.
After his professional career, ‘Iceman’ achieved fame calling rebroadcasts of fights for ESPN Classic as well as writing a popular column in the British magazine, Boxing News.
However Scully has achieved his most success as a trainer being instrumental in helping take fighters like Jose Antonio Rivera and Chad Dawson to world titles.
Scully is now a co-trainer of the Russian, now Canadian based, undefeated light heavyweight world champion, Artur Beterbiev, who defends his title this Saturday in California live on ESPN.
In addition to his work as a trainer he has been an passionate advocate and champion for the rights and well being of retired fighters.
“I’m extremely honored to receive this recognition and I really appreciate Murphys Boxing for thinking of me.”, says the 51 year old Connecticut resident.
“It’s particularly special because it will come in the city of Springfield where I spent the majority of my amateur boxing career training at the old Central City Gym at the X under Coach John Tynan. I’m looking forward to a great night.”
Murphys Boxing founder, Ken Casey explains the promotion’s decision to name Scully as the latest recipient of the award named after one of the Dropkick Murphy’s signature songs, “The Warrior’s Code” which is a tribute to another New England boxing hero, Micky Ward.

“John’s career in boxing, from being a world class fighter to his work as an analyst to his success as a trainer, is inspirational. It shows young fighters there is opportunity for them in the sport after their in ring career is over. Murphys Boxing is honored to acknowledge and celebrate John Scully’s many achievements in the sport.”
Scully will be third recipient of the award established this year by Murphys Boxing to celebrate those fighters who contributed to the rich and diverse history of boxing in New England. Scully joins 2019 International Hall of Fame Inductee, Tony DeMarco and decorated Massachusetts’ amateur, Mike D’Ampolo who received the first awards at Murphys Boxing’s last event in Melrose, Massachusetts this past March.
The presentation of Murphys Boxing’s Warrior’s Code Award will take place during Murphys Boxing’s UFC Fight Pass debut event next Friday, May 10th which features NABA Super Featherweight Champion, Abraham Nova (14-0, 10 KOs) vs. Mario Ezequiel Sayal Lozano (18-2-1, 9 KOs) in the 10 round main event as well as a packed undercard of undefeated fighters from the Murphys Boxing stable including WBC South American Middleweight Champion, Carlos Gongora (15-0, 12 KOs), NABF Jr. Super Featherweight Champion, William Foster III (9-0, 6 KOs), Venezuelan Olympian, Luis Arcon Diaz (6-0, 6 KOs), Boston based amateur standout, James Perella (2-0, 2 KOs) and more.

Coming off the heels of the sold out 4th Annual St. Patrick’s Day Clash which has amassed over 225,000 online views, Murphys Boxing is proud to announce the creation of the Warrior’s Code Award to celebrate the achievements of New England’s most legendary boxers.
The award’s first recipients will be 2019 International Boxing Hall of Fame inductee,Tony DeMarco and one of Massachusetts’ most decorated amateur boxers, Mike D’Ampolo.
Both fighters will be presented with their awards next Friday, March 29th at the Murphys Boxing event at Memorial Hall in Melrose, Massachusetts.
At 87 years old,Tony DeMarco holds the distinction of being boxing’s oldest living world champion and has been a beloved figure in the Boston sports world for over half a century.
Known as ‘Nardo’, the Boston fighter of Italian descent, turned pro unbelievably just a few years after the end of World War II. In a 14 year career, DeMarco went 52-12-1 while fighting during boxing’s golden age. His legendary battles with Hall of Famers like Carmen Basilio and Kid Gavilin made DeMarco a star and he won the welterweight world title in 1955 against Johnny Saxton at the original Boston Garden in a fight that was voted one of Boston’s Top 10 Sports Moments.
DeMarco, who still can be found ringside at Murphys Boxing events and whose statue resides in Boston’s North End where he still lives, will receive the long overdue honor of joining the International Boxing Hall of Fame as a 2019 inductee this June.
“Murphys Boxing has always been very welcoming to me and my family.”, explains DeMarco.
“They have a true respect for boxing’s history. It’s an honor to be given their first ever award just months before entering the International Boxing Hall of Fame. I am looking forward to the evening.”
Joining DeMarco will be Melrose’s own, Mike D’Ampolo, who is considered one of the most successful amateurs ever to come out of the state of Massachusetts.
D’Ampolo was a New England Golden Gloves Champion, a 3x New England AAU Champ, a 2x Eastern Regional Champion and participated in the 1984 Olympic Trialsbarely missing a spot on the legendary 1984 USA Olympic Team with his weight class ultimately being represented by none other than Evander Holyfield.
On advice from his father, D’Ampolo made the decision to not enter the professional ranks and went onto become a successful businessman with his company, M&L Transit Systems based out of his hometown of Melrose, Massachusetts.
“I’m humbled. Back when we were fighting, there wasn’t much recognition or credit given to amateurs.”, says D’Ampolo.
“I used to be in the paper back then but it’s been a long time and I’m just very grateful to Murphys Boxing for remembering and honoring me here in my hometown.”

MEDF0RD, Mass. (October 27 2015) – More than 125 amateur boxers – ranging from open class to novice, masters and Junior Olympians – have already registered to compete in the upcoming 130th annual USA Boxing New England Championships which will be hosted by Quietman Sports Gym at two Massachusetts venues.
Quietman Sports Gym in Medford (MA) is owned and operated by two-time world heavyweight boxing champion John “The Quietman” Ruiz, the first and only world heavyweight champion of Hispanic heritage.
The quarterfinals will be held Saturday, November 7, followed by the following Saturday’s (Nov. 14) semifinals, both at Chelsea High School. Semifinal winners will qualify for the championship finals scheduled, Saturday, Nov. 28 at Plymouth Memorial Hall. Winners in each weight class will advance to the USA National Championships. Doors open at 5:00 p.m. ET with the first match scheduled to start at 7:00 p.m. ET.
