Team USA middleweight Troy Isley was named Most Outstanding Boxer of the night

USA Boxing Announces Rosters for USA vs. IRL Northeast Boxing Tour

Dean Fay, the Central City Boxing and Barbell Gym Founder & Директор, has helped develop the Western New England Golden Gloves franchise into the preeminent power in the six-state region, capturing numerous individual All-New England titles and five consecutive team championships.

Fay is a Springfield police officer who started his program 10 години, last year moving into Central City Boxing and Barbell Gym, primarily to keep kids off the street, teaching them values to become productive citizens.

Golden Gloves has funded a lot of small gyms because many of these kids can’t afford fees. We’ve bridged the gap by hosting shows that raises money and creates fanbases.

Boxing represents life; how to conduct themselves in and out of the ring. Boxing is a small fraternity and boxers walk up those steps and through the ropes, in front of everybody, and confront their fears. Boxing is determined by judges and, in life, you are judged by how you live by laws. Life values are taught through boxing.
“Hosting the USA-Boxing Northeast Boxing Tour gives kids in our program an opportunity to watch up close the top boxers who are representing their country. My kids realize that they could do that someday. They see the best boxers in the country and that’s where they want to be.”

Championships, highlighted by a bronze-medal performance at the PAL Championships.
“I was fortunate to be part of USA Boxing,” Rivera said. “Gaining experience in amateur boxing helped mold me as a person and give me confidence to pursue my dream of becoming world champion as a professional. I started boxing in Springfield when I was 15, before moving to Worcester (М-р), becoming part of Carlo Garcia‘s growing stable of national and regional champions.”
The three-city boxing tour kicks off at Boston’s Royale Entertainment Complex on Март 12 and closes Море. 21 at the Manchester Downtown Hotel in Manchester, N.H. A full roster for both teams will soon be released.

“На крајот на денот,” the 54-year-old Walsh admitted, “it is an unusual situation for me. But I’ve been coaching here two years and Team USA is my team now. I didn’t come here for just a few years. When I eventually leave, Team USA will have developed continuity and a solid program.
“I am a true Irishman who developed through a system that won multiple titles and I was the Irish Team captain for five years. I’m helping develop strong relations between USA and Ireland that can help both programs. Ireland has been among the best of the world – amazing considering the geographical size of Ireland — with its fighters’ great hearts along with their technique and skill. There’s a lot of talent and resources in the states, but amateur boxers have been taught to develop skills more for professional boxing. Here there is a variety of different ethnic groups: Mexicans, African-American and Caucasians, премногу. It’s truly a melting pot and each has a unique style of boxing. We are now providing coaching education for US programs to be sustainable long term.”

Many Irish and Irish-American boxers have fought in the Greater Boston area, some born and others resettling there. The tradition started back in the 19та century with “The Boston Strongboy,” Џон. L. Sullivan (Roxbury, М-р), the first millionaire American athlete, as well as the first “gloves” world heavyweight champion and final “bare knuckles” heavyweight champion of the world. An International Boxing Hall of Famer, Sullivan won 38 на 38 про тепачки, 30 coming by knockout, with only one loss and two draws.
Another Hall-of-Famer from that era, Џејк Kilrain (29-5-8, 17 КО), lived in Somerville and Quincy, both Boston suburbs. Kilrain (1829-1899) also reigned as world heavyweight champion.
Irish boxers from Greater Boston continued this rich tradition through the end of the 19та and beginning of the 20та centuries with world champions and top contenders such as welterweight Paddy Duffy (31-3,16, 18 КО), Lawrence welterweight Mike Glover(Cavanaugh – 30-5-5, 16 КО), and Charlestown welterweight Мајк “Twin” Sullivan(28-6-16, 17 КО), and Newton bantamweight Jimmy Walsh (33-10-20, 14 КО)
In the 1950’s, Woburn lightweight “Ирската” Tommy Collins (61-12, 44 КО) was dropped 10 times at the Boston Garden by world champion Jimими Картер, until he finally succumbed in the fourth round. His gutsy performance, Меѓутоа, earned him an appearance on the popular Ed Sullivan Show.
Arlington heavyweight Том McNeeley (37-14, 28 КО), unsuccessfully fought for the world title in 1961, stopped in the fourth round of his Toronto fight versus defending champion Флојд Петерсон, and McNeeley’s son, Boston-native and later Medfield resident Петар “Ураганот” McNeeley (47-7, 30 КО) famously was stopped in the opening round by “Железо” Мајк Тајсон in the latter’s first fight after his release from prison.
In the 1980’s, Irish boxers made their way to Boston to fight; some returned home after their careers, others relocated in the area. Collins’ younger brother, Packie Collins, also moved to Brockton to fight. He later worked with Irish heavyweight champion Кевин “The Clones Colossus” McBride (35-10-1, 29 КО), who went on to knock Tyson out and into retirement. McBride, who still lives in Dorchester, was a stablemate of former Team Ireland head coach and current Team USA head coach, Били Волш, at the European Games. Another Ireland Olympian, Wayne “Pocket Rocket” McCullough (27-7, 18 КО), moved to Las Vegas from Northern Ireland. Ward’s life was portrayed by another Boston icon, actor Mark Wahlberg, in the award-winning movie, “The Fighter.”
Irish boxers are still coming to Boston to fight. Locally-based Murphys Boxing has promoted numerous shows in Boston featuring world-class boxers such as Гери “Спајк” О'Саливен and undefeated super bantamweight TJ “Моќ” Doheny (18-0, 13 КО), as well as undefeated rising stars such as “Sting” Ray Mayotte and New England & Massachusetts heavyweight champion Niall Kennedy (10-0, 6 КО).
The Irish team will announce its boxers later this month after the conclusion of its National Championships.
