Simply the best….. Roy Jones, Refresh.

USA Boxing Alumni Association, Sehlopha sa 2018 Inductee

Colorado Springs, Lap. (September 6, 2018) – Living legend Roy Jones, Refresh., universally recognized as one of the greatest pound-for-pound boxers of all-time, leads a celebrated quintet of Class of 2018 inductees into the USA Boxing Alumni Association Hall of Fame.

The second annual USA Boxing Alumni Association Hall of Fame reception, held in conjunction with the 2018 USA Boxing Elite and Youth National Championships and Junior and Prep Open, December 2-8, will be held Dec. 7, at the Radisson Hotel (215 S. Temple St.) in Salk Lake City, Utah.

Ho phaella moo ho Jones, le Sehlopha sa 2018 also includes two U.S. Olympic gold medalists and world (setsebi) champions, Andre Ward le Claressa Shields, as well as former USA Boxing National Director of Coaching Emanuel Motsamaisi ea and veteran USA Boxing official Tom Cleary. The latter two will be posthumously inducted.

The charter class inducted last year included Muhammad Ali le Evander Holyfield, as well as veteran coaches Roosevelt Sanders le Tom Coulter.

I am honored to be selected for induction into the USA Boxing Alumni Association Hall of Fame,” Jones commented, “especially as a member of this great class with my fellow inductees.

Amateur boxing gave me the chance to learn life skills as well as face every other possible scenario inside of the ring.

Jones, makatsang, got into boxing at the age of 11 because of Ali. “I saw Ali vs. (Joe) Frazierand just felt as though Ali and I had the same mental concept on life,” Jones explained.

Jones went on to become one of the best amateur boxers in the world, compiling a reported 121-13 rekoto, including gold medal performances at the 1984 National Junior Olympics and 1986 & 1987 National Golden Gloves Tournaments.

A le 1988 Olympics in Seoul, South Korea, Jones reached the championship final of the light middleweight division against Park Si-Hun, of South Korea. Jones suffered arguably the worst decision in boxing history, losing 3-2, despite outpunching his opponent, 86 ho 32 landed punches, and he was forced to settle for a silver medal. Even his opponent admitted that Jones won their fight, leading the AIBA to later suspend the three judges who selected the hometown fighter as the winner.

How disgraceful was this decision? Jones was selected as the Val Barker Trophy winner as the best boxer of the 1988 Olympics and, due to controversy, the scoring system for Olympic boxing was changed, replacing the 20-point must system with electronic scoring.

I was angered,” Jones admitted, “yet promoted to prove that I was the best fighter there, and in the world, at that time.

Jones made his professional debut May 6, 1989, at home in Pensacola, Florida, in a scheduled eight-round bout, in which RJJ stopped Ricky Randall ea bobeli ho pota-pota. His long, glorious journey has produced a remarkable 66-9 (47 Kos) pro record, highlighted by nine major world titles in four different weight classes.

A 2003, Jones defeated John Ruiz by way of a 12-round unanimous decision to become the first former world middleweight champion to become world heavyweight title holder in more than a century.

The possessor of exceptional hand and foot speed, athleticism, movement and reflexes, Jones went undefeated through his first 34 lan lintoa, 22-3 (14) a lefatše tlotla ho tlisa lintoa. Against former, present or future world champions, Jones was 19-9 (8 Kos) and included among his victims were greats such as Bernard Hopkins, James Toney, Mike McCallum,Vinnie Pazienza, Virgil Hill, Antonio Tarver le Felix Trinidad.

Kajeno, the 49-year-old Jones, technically speaking, is still an active fighter. He also has two promotional companies and gyms, located in Pensacola and Las Vegas, trains several pro boxers and serves as a color commentator for HBO Boxing. He recently opened gyms in South Africa.

For the past two years, Jones has hosted theFuture Stars of Boxing Tournament” ho la Las Vegas, showcasing some of the best amateur boxers in the world.

Hosting the tournament in Las Vegas gives me the opportunity to give back to amateur boxing,” Jones explained. “It’s a great experience for the boxers and it reminds them that who they may have or still look up to, are watching them as well.

Kid Chocolate, James J. Corbett, Jack McAuliffe, Sam Taub, Bob & Murray Goodman head new class

NEW YORK (April 9, 2018) – Former world cruiserweight champion Al “leqhoa” Cole le Krrish, No.; 1 heavyweight contender “Baby” Joe Mesi are both extremely honored and grateful to be inducted, hammoho le 21 others in the Class of 2018, into the New York State Boxing Hall of Fame (NYSBHOF).

Ea bosupa ea selemo le selemo NYSBHOF induction lijo tsa mantsiboea tla tshwarwa Sunday afternoon (12:30-5:30 p.m. LE), April 29, once again at Russo’s On The Bay in Howard Beach, New York.

Cole (35-16-3, 16 Kos), who is from Rockland County, fought professional between 1989 le 2011, won his first 15 le 27 ea la hore qalong a 28 lan lintoa. He captured the International Boxing Federation (IBF) Cruiserweight World Championship in 1992, when he won a 12-round unanimous decision over James Warring (14-1). Cole made four successful world title defenses before moving up to heavyweight.

I knew I’d get in one day and I’m honored to be inducted into the New York State Boxing Hall of Fame, especially with this class because I know a few other fighters going in like Lou Del Valle and Terrance Alli.Cole said. “I was known as a crowd-pleasing, exciting fighter, and people who watched me always knew I’d be in a good fight with good exchanges. I did fight in the shadows of (Mike) Tyson and Roy (Jones. Jr.).

I fought in the Army with Ray Mercer, stung Evander Holyfield in sparring. My best fight, leha ho le joalo, hurt me the most. I was so sharp against a fighter from Kronk Gym, Vincent Boulware, in my third world title defense that year (1993). Boulware had won six of his last seven fights with four knockouts and I was just becoming a decent name, If I beat him, I was supposed to fight Tommy Hearns or Iran Barkley, who were both moving up to cruiserweight. I had the best fight of my career, but I couldn’t get any of the other world cruiserweight champs to fight me. I only had four fights in the next three years. I moved up to heavyweight because the same guys who I beat when they were my mandatory challenger (Uriah Grant & Nate Miller) worked their way back into the mandatory position.

Cole grew up in Atlantic City, where he fought 18 linako tse ling, and he got to know a casino owner, Donald Trump. “We hung out,” Cole remembered. “Trump invited me to some of his private parties. I never thought he’d be president!”.

Mesi (36-0, 29 Kos) was so popular in Buffalo, he was considered the upstate New York city’s third sports franchise (Bills and Sabres). A top American amateur, “Baby Joefought professionally between 1997 le 2007, racking up 36 victories without a defeat, yet he never to a world title shot due to a medical issue. Ranked as high at No. 1 ke ea Lefatše Boxing Lekgotla la (WBC) Mesi was suspended by the Nevada Commission, after he defeated former world champion Vassily Jirov by way of a 10-round unanimous decision, due to a head injury (brain bleeds).

Mesi was virtually blacklisted in boxing, losing two full years in the ring, while he pursued legal action to get re-licensed, which he eventually was but only by a few commissions. Joe fought seven times after being re-licensed, but he was unfortunately limited in terms of where he could fight, and he never regained the lofty status he had once held. In addition to Jirov, Mesi defeated notables such as Monte Barrett, DeVarryl Williamson and Jorge Luis Gonzalez.

“Sena ke e khōlō nako hore ke,” Mesi commented about his upcoming induction. “I’m humbled and honored to be going into the same Hall of Fame with the great names that are already there. I’m soaking it all in right now.

I’ve been somewhat removed from boxing, but just the business end. I’m still a big boxing fan and follow the sport. Kajeno, I’m married with three kids and sell medical devices for a living. Boxing is still my passion, my love, and since I got the call (that he’s going in the NYSBHOF), I’ve been thinking about all the memories. I’d like to do some more TV announcing in boxing and, maybe someday, get into promoting. I’m really looking forward to the New York State Boxing Hall of Fame induction ceremony.
