On his recent training camp with Virgil Hunter:
“Virgil Hunter and I had a great final few days of training camp. All the sparring and training is finalized and now we are focused on making weight. My body feels rejuvenated and I’ll be at my best going into this fight.”
On facing former world champion Chad Dawson:
“Chad Dawson is a very skilled fighter who has won at the elite level. He’s a former world champion who’s been in the ring with the best fighters in the division. I know he will be a difficult challenge, but I’m confident I’ll be victorious.”
On the long layoff since his last fight:
“I felt it was a good thing to take some time off after my fight with Joe Smith. I was able to reflect on my performance, and make the move to start training with Virgil Hunter. I incorporated Pilates into my training regimen and I feel great. My mental focus is sharp. Everyone will see the improvement in my performance.”
On the current state of the light-heavyweight division:

Former Undisputed Welterweight Champion to Provide Unique Insight as Garcia and Thurman Join Boxing Royalty in 147-Pound Unification

NOVA YORK (Febrer. 28, 2017) – Boxing Hall of Famer and former undisputed welterweight world champion Sugar Ray Leonard will join the SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING on CBS broadcast team on Saturday, Març 4 for GARCIA vs. Thurman. The event will be headlined by the welterweight world championship unification bout between undefeated champions Danny García i Keith Thurman. GARCIA vs. THURMAN is presented by Premier Boxing Champions and will take place at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center, home of BROOKLYN BOXING.

 

The live broadcast will be produced by SHOWTIME Sports® for the CBS Television Network and will air live on CBS from 9-11 p.m. I / 6-8 p.m. PT. García vs. Thurman will be the first world title unification bout in any weight division on live network television in over two decades and just the second primetime boxing presentation on CBS in nearly 40 any. The first was headlined by a thrilling welterweight world championship fight between Thurman and Shawn Porter, 1 2016 Fight of the Year candidate and one of the most watched boxing events of the year.

 

With SHOWTIME boxing analyst and active prizefighter Paul Malignaggi scheduled to fight in London that evening, the broadcast seat opened up for Leonard. He will join SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING host Brian Custer, play-by-play voice Mauro Ranallo, International Boxing Hall of Fame analyst En Bernstein and Sports Emmy® Award-winning reporter Jim Gray en dissabte.

 

Leonard made his professional boxing debut on CBS in 1977, less than one year after he won gold at the ‘76 Olympics in Montreal as part of what is considered the greatest American boxing team in Olympic history. He served as a boxing analyst for the network in the early 1980s during a temporary retirement, calling fights alongside CBS boxing announcer Tim Ryan and Hall of Fame trainer and analyst Gil Clancy, before eventually resuming his professional boxing career. La Març 4event will reunite Leonard with former CBS producer and current SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING Executive Producer David Dinkins Jr.., and director Bob Dunphy, the son of legendary boxing broadcaster Don Dunphy.

“When Ray and I last spoke in January, we’d reminisced briefly about our work in boxing together and we’d promised to get together soon,” said Dinkins. “Who knew it would be to work on the biggest fight scheduled for 2017? "García vs. Thurman is a battle of undefeated champions,” Dinkins continued. “The winner of this fight will be the No. 1 welterweight in the world. Ray has been there. His classic battles with Wilfred Benitez, Roberto Duran and Thomas Hearns at welterweight made him a legend. It is only fitting that he will be ringside when a new star is born.”

 

Leonard was down on the scorecards when he knocked out Hearns in the 14º round of the 1981 lluita. It was only the second world championship unification match in welterweight history. Garcia and Thurman will face off in the 10º unification in division history, and only the third between undefeated world champions.

 

After the Hearns fight, Leonard made one more defense of his welterweight belts before eventually moving up to challenge Marvin Hagler en el pes mig. Leonard has served as a TV personality and boxing analyst since retiring from the ring in 1997, including a stint on CBS.

A tall fighter for his division at more than six feet, the 21-year-old Barrios picked up seven victories in a jam-packed 2015 in which he stopped five opponents inside the distance. The San Antonio-native turned pro in 2013 and is on the fast track towards a world title shot as he defeated Devis Boschiero in a 12-round bout in July 2016 and followed it up with a second round knockout of Claudio Rosendo Tapia in December. He will be challenged by the 22-year-old Suarez of Sinaloa, Mexico who picked up five wins in 2016 and stopped Christian Valverde in the fifth-round of his last bout.

 

An accomplished amateur who was born in Kazakhstan but fights out of California, Lipinets turned pro in April of 2014 with a decision victory over Franklin Varela. The 27-year-old recorded six knockouts in a row before stepping up in competition and impressing with a victory over Haskell Lydell Rhodes in March 2015 and a knockout of Levan Ghvamichava in March. He kept the momentum going by stopping established contender Walter Castillo in July and knocking out Lenny Zappavigna in their 140-pound title eliminator in December. He will be challenge by the Keith Thurman stablemate Booth, who fights out of St. Petersburg, Florida and defeated Cesar Soriano in his last bout.

WESTBURY, N.Y. “Aquest és l'esport de la boxa i un cop pot canviar qualsevol baralla. Qualsevol lluitador té la capacitat de fer mal a mi, així que no pas per alt a ningú. Lamanna està invicte. Mai ha perdut, així que no puc veure més enllà del que. Qualsevol cosa pot passar en aquest país.”

Què sap vostè de Lamanna i quin tipus de baralla que esperes?
“Jo sé que ell és alt i té un llarg abast. Jo realment no sabia què esperar. Jo sé que ell tendeix a tancar a tractar de mantenir-se en una posició defensiva. He de prendre avantatge que a l'anar a l'ofensiva.”

Després del que has superat com a jove, es considera vostè un supervivent? Va fer boxa estalviar?
“Jo no em considero només un supervivent. Jo em considero un lluitador. Jo tenia un munt de lluitar per a la meva joventut. Boxa em va ajudar a superar els meus problemes. Es em va donar la instrucció i la disciplina. Al voltant de l'edat de 14 Em vaig prendre el control de la meva vida i em vaig convertir en un home. “Quan jo estava en una llar d'acollida a 14, meus dos guardians es van separar i jo estava en una posició en què havia de prendre la decisió d'escollir el camí per baixar. Jo no estaria en la posició que estic en l'actualitat si no vaig fer la decisió que vaig prendre. No hi havia gent al meu voltant que em assenyali en la direcció correcta, Jo estava en el meu compte. Si hi havia gent que estava recolzat tant a mi, Jo no m'ho esperava. Jo era a la posició que estava prenent la decisió únicament per mi mateix.”

Aconseguir seriós aquí – la seva mare estava en i fora de la seva vida creixent. El que tan lleial a la manté després de tot el que has passat?
“Entenc que el fet que tot el món passa a través de les coses en la seva vida. És fàcil de dir el que han de fer. Es necessita molt per posar a un costat el seu orgull per ser considerat del que la gent està passant. Massa persones es van col·locar primer sobre els altres. Vaig donar un pas enrere i em vaig adonar que tot passa per una raó i mira com em va resultar avui. La meva mare i jo tenim una gran relació ara perquè jo era la comprensió de la seva situació i no prendre res del que va fer intencionadament o pensen que va ser dirigida cap a mi.”

Què va aprendre del seu últim ShoBox lluita contra Soro)?. ¿Vostè ho veu com una cosa positiva o negatiu?
“Veig la baralla amb Soro com una cosa positiva. En aquesta baralla em vaig posar en pes, la més petita que he estat en un temps. Jo estava en 155 en lloc del meu pes habitual de 160. Desfer-se de les seves quilos realment va tenir un gran impacte en la baralla i em vaig adonar que sóc un pes mitjà i em sento còmode en 160.”

Que la lluita Soro va ser cridat un empat majoritari — era que una decepció per a vostè? Com es va assabentar que?
“Va ser una gran decepció per a mi aconseguir un empat, però ara sabem que no fos qualsevol menor que 160. Això és el més important que hem après en la baralla. No hi ha tal cosa com ser massa disciplinat. Les persones van notar el prima que estava per aquesta baralla, però en ser un lluitador disciplinat jo estava decidit a fer el pes. Una gran quantitat d'oponents no hagués pres aquesta baralla, però va ser una oportunitat que jo volia aprofitar. Vaig pensar que era una bona decisió en el moment, però vaig aprendre una valuosa lliçó.”

Vostè va cridar la dent d'un noi en la seva primera baralla ShoBox (Jan. 17, 2014, front Marquis Davis) i la teva mare es va robar el xou en la seva última aparició. Què tens al magatzem per als espectadors en Març 13?
“Vull dir, Estic planejant una gran baralla. Això és tot el que puc garantir. Jo no sóc un supersticions [Divendres La 13a]. Jo només puc garantir que serà una gran baralla.”

¿Quina és la seva major fortalesa? Està buscant el nocaut o vostè creu que pot anar 10 rondes i aconseguir la victòria d'aquesta manera?
