GLOVER VACATES; A NEW LIGHT-HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION TO BE CROWNED AT NEF 25

It was a bitterly cold night in Lewiston last February when Ryan Glover (3-1) won the New England Fights (NEF) mixed-martial-arts (MMA) amateur light-heavyweight title. The months to come would see Glover accept a new job that would take him up and down the East Coast. With little time to train to defend the title, and in the interest of doing right by the division, Glover recently made the difficult decision to relinquish the championship.

 

NEF executives were quick to act. Eerder vandaag, the fight promotion announced that Victor Irwin (2-0) would meet Nick Shea (2-0) to fill the vacancy. The two undefeated athletes are scheduled to face-off to determine a new light-heavyweight champion at “NEF 25: HEROES & VILLAINS” opSeptember 10, 2016 in Lewiston.

 

Irwin was a standout wrestler at Brewer High School in Brewer, Maine at 195-pounds where he was a Class-A state champion. His love for the sport is so strong that when Irwin attended Eastern Maine Community College (EMCC) and learned the school did not have a wrestling program, he created one himself. As a college freshman in 2014 Irwin went to Nationals and achieved All-American status. He currently trains out of Young’s MMA in Bangor, Maine.

 

“I’ve thought a lot about this fight and I’ve come to the conclusion that it doesn’t matter what I say,” said Irwin, “it matters what I do, and come September 10thyou’re gonna see some serious doing.”

 

2015 was a great start to the MMA career of Nick Shea. In February of that year, he won his debut fight over the much more experienced Jacob Cameron (1-5) via de eerste ronde technische knock-out. Later in the year, Shea would go on to defeat Ruben Redman (0-1) by decision in a hard-fought contest. It would earn Shea a nomination for the “Rookie van het Jaar” in de 2015 NEF Year-End Awards. MacFarlane Displays Phenomenal Ground Game En Route to Submission win Over Ruth

In the second MMA battle of the evening, Ilima-Lei MacFarlane (4-0) was able to continue her rapid ascension to the top of the women’s flyweight division and remain undefeated with an impressive rear-naked choke submission over Rebecca Ruth (6-2). MacFarlane’s remarkable ground game and jiu-jitsu skill set was on full display tonight, forcing the veteran Ruth to tap out three minutes into the second round. For Ruth, the loss is just the second of her career and first since 2014. The win is “The Ilimanator’s” third since joining the promotion and is her first submission victory of the rear-naked choke variety.

Gloria Peritore Takes Split Decision Victory From Denise Kielholtz

 

In the opening kickboxing bout of "Bellator: Dynamite 2,” Gloria Peritore (11-1-1) was able to edge out Denise Kielholtz (44-3), taking home a split decision victory. It was an even battle from start to finish, but in the end it was the judges’ scorecards that read 29-28, 28-29, 29-28 in favor of the Italian. The loss is just the third of Kielholtz’s career and left the Dutch powerhouse completely speechless in the center of the ring. For the 27-year-old Peritore, the win gives her 11 since making her professional debut only two years ago.

Matt Mitrione Ignites Full House in Opening Bout of “Bellator: Dynamite 2”

Matt Mitrione (10-5) was able to absorb an early blow from Carl Seumanutafa (10-7) net 20 seconds into round one and answered with a flash of brilliance 3:22 into the opening frame. The come-from-behind knockout victory is the ninth of that variety and tenth of Mitrione’s career. “Meathead” proved his ability to outlast yet another opponent in what will surely go down as one of the greatest Bellator MMA debuts of all time. Fishgold and Boussif set for Lightweight title challenge

Chris Fishgold (14-1-1) will clash with Adam Boussif (9-3) to contest the Cage Warriors Fighting Championship’s vacant lightweight title at CWFC 77 next month.

The tussle will take place at the Camden Centre in London on July 8; the main card will stream on UFC Fight Pass and will also feature the headline bout for the middleweight title between Jack Marshman (19-5) and Christopher Jacquelin (8-2).

Chris Fishgold is a top ten-ranked domestic lightweight who is an aggressive grappler with a punishing top game. Hailing from Liverpool and training under Paul Rimmer who is also coach to Paddy Pimblett he boasts 12 wins by stoppage – two TKOs and ten submissions.

Op slechts 24 jaar oud, Fishgold is a veteran of the European MMA scene having made his is pro debut in March 2010 clocking up a 10-0 record in four years with three CWFC wins against Steve O’Keefe (CWFC 52), Marcin Wrzosek (CWFC 57), Olivier Pastor(CWFC 62).

An 18-month break from the domestic scene followed due to injury and then a brief spell in Thailand at Phuket Top Team. While in Asia, an under par Fishgold recorded his first loss against Gi Bum Moon by decision in Korea. On his return to the UK he fought Ryan Roddy in an entertaining contest, which was scored a draw. Now Fishgold is riding a four-fight winning streak – his most recent, een 64 second submission at CWFC 75 in April against Jordan Miller.

"I can’t wait to be the Cage Warriors lightweight champion," Fishgold said. “It’s an honour to fight for the belt. I’m looking forward to showing my ever improving skill set.”

Adam “Boa” Boussif has clocked up a five-fight winning streak in the space of 16 months and like his opponent is an accomplished finisher with all of his nine victories coming via stoppage – seven submissions and two TKOs.

The 27-year-old Brit comes to this fight as the underdog but will have a noticeable size advantage – not only is he 6’0 to Fishgold’s 5’8 he has spent part of his career at welterweight although his most recent victory was at lightweight.

Boussif was based at Force MMA but in April 2016 travelled to Thailand and won a one-year sponsored scholarship to train and live at Tiger Muay Thai and be a part of the in-house Fight Team. A month later, as part of their team he traveled to Seoul, Korea where he defeated Jung Min Kang by rear-naked choke in the 2nd round of their bout at Top FC 11.

Boussif who is from Hertfordshire, England said, "Cage warriors has been a great platform for fighters to showcase their skills to a wider audience. I’ve been putting in the work, which will show when I become the Cage Warriors lightweight champion.”

Fishgold and Boussif will be vying for the title that was vacated by Stevie Ray before his move to the UFC

Ian Dean, Cage Warriors Matchmaker comments, “With 21 finishes between them this promising to be another exciting bout on a card full of fighters that leave nothing to chance”.

Dean adds, “Chris Fishgold is deserving of a title shot, he’s a very exciting and aggressive grappler and this is a great opportunity for him. Lewiston, Maine (Juni 18, 2016) - New England Fights (NEF) held the fight promotion’s latest event, “NEF 24: PROMISED LAND” op zaterdag nacht in de Androscoggin Bank Colisée in Lewiston, Maine. The event featured a full slate of professional boxing, amateur mixed-martial-arts (MMA) and professional MMA bouts. Bijna 2,000 packed the hallowed halls where Muhammad Ali once defended the heavyweight championship of the world against Sonny Liston. A special video tribute was presented honoring Ali prior to the beginning of the event.
