The long-awaited, highly anticipated matchup between mixed martial arts legend Ken Shamrock (28-16-2) and bare-knuckled brawler Kimbo Slice (5-2) definitely didn’t disappoint. The energy from the packed crowd at Scottrade Center in St. Louis was palpable, as fans from all walks of life had waited since 2008 to see the two enter the cage, with Slice claiming victory by TKO at 2:22 in round one.

When the opening bell sounded, the founding father of MMA looked to shoot for the takedown on Slice immediately, maneuvering into a position to secure a win with a rear-naked choke. But as promised, Slice refused to tap.

Before the crowd could blink, the two fighters were upright and exchanging blows. Slice was able to land a lethal right hook that stunned Shamrock, sending him immediately to the canvas. Just as Slice moved in to land additional blows on the defenseless Shamrock, referee John McCarthy quickly stepped in and stopped the fight.

After the bout, an exuberant Slice acted as if this victory was long overdue. “I’ve been in this position before,” said Slice. “I trained my ground game very well. Tapping was not an option.”

Shamrock, who looked to be in top shape coming into the fight, was full of class in defeat. “When you come into a fight and you get beat you have to show respect,” said Shamrock. “I’m frustrated, I had the submission but I didn’t take my time with it. I lost my position. I tried to scramble, but I wasn’t that fast and I got caught.”

In the night’s co-feature and potential comeback “Fight of the Year,” current Bellator Featherweight World Champion PatricioPitbullFreire (24-2) retained his title against Daniel “Weasel” Weichel (35-9) with a beautiful left hook knockout 32-seconds into round two.

In the first round it looked like Bellator would have a new 145-pound champion, as the German international immediately came forward with pressure, catching the Brazilian with multiple jabs.

Just when it looked like referee McCarthy would stop the action, the first round bell sounded just in the nick of time to save Freire from a stunning first-round knockout.

After the fight, a seemingly stunned “Pitbull” didn’t seem to lose any confidence. “My opponent was very tough, but I can go to war,” said Freire. “I am very happy to still be the champion. I’m here, if you want my belt you can try to come get it.”

“I believe the bell saved me,” Freire continued. “He hit me with a hard punch on my chin but I stayed calm going into the second round because I knew I needed to win the fight. I saw an opening after he punched me and I hit him with my best shot.”

A visibly distraught and emotional Weichel knew he let a golden opportunity slip away. “I started the second round slowly,” said Weichel. “I didn’t want him to recover after the first round. I started on the offensive in the second round and unfortunately I got caught.”

In heavyweight action, Bobby “The Dominator” Lashley (13-2), of Coconut Creek, Fla., made quick work of DanThe ManCharles (9-3), dominating the 29-year-old with a great ground and pound, an arsenal that including multiple suplexes. Referee McCarthy stopped the fight at 4:14 in the second round resulting in a TKO for the three-time NAIA amateur wrestling champion and his third straight win under the Bellator banner.

Charles, who took the fight on two weeks’ notice after James Thompson dropped out due to injury, was overmatched by the considerably larger Lashley, who kept himself in great position to eventually vie for the heavyweight title.

The 38-year-old referenced his esteemed wrestling background as a major factor in claiming victory. “You always go back to your basics in a fight and wrestling is my background,” said Lashley. “I need to keep moving forward, the heavyweight division is wide open. I need to keep my eyes open.”

Daniel Straus (23-6), of Coconut Creek, Fla. looked like he has fully rebounded from his title shot loss to Pitbull Freire, convincingly beating Henry Corrales (12-1) of La Mirada, Calif. via submission (guillotine choke) tom 3:47 mus muab ob tug.

Straus looked like he came into the fight to make a statement, quickly attacking Corrales with consecutive blows to the head that had the Californian staggering backwards on multiple occasions.

“I’m still dominating people,” said Straus. “This is what I do. Win or lose I come in here to beat up my opponent.”

Straus seemed confident that he would have no issues reclaiming his belt. “Whoever wins the featherweight belt hmo no,” exclaimed Straus. “I am coming to beat you up.”

It was a valiant effort by Corrales, who was making his Bellator debut, but it was obvious that he was a step behind Straus from the opening bell. The loss was just the first in Corrales’ career.

In the night’s first main-card contest, lightweight and hometown favorite Michael Chandler (13-3), of High Ridge, Mo., made quick work of Derek “The Stallion” Campos (15-5), needing just 2:17 secondsto score a submission (rear-naked choke) win.

Coming off three straight losses, Chandler clearly looked relieved following the fight. “Derek Campos is a tough guy, he hit me in my mouth and bloodied me a bit,” said Chandler. “I was excited to fight this guy. I’m not in this sport to tip toe and find easy fights.”

Feeling notably confident, Chandler called out current lightweight champion Will Brooks, who happened to be sitting cage side. “I want that belt back,” said Chandler. “Will Brooks, that belt has my name on it, wherever you are.”

OFFICIAL WEIGH-IN RESULTS, PHOTOS AND INFORMATION FROM “BELLATOR MMA: UNFINISHED BUSINESS”

SAINT LOUIS (Rau hli ntuj 18, 2015) After weigh-ins at Scottrade Center on Thursday, Kimbo Slice thiab Ken Shamrock will finally settle their “Unfinished Business.”

“Bellator MMA: Kimbo vs. Shamrock,” which airs live and free on Spike at 9 p.m. LI / 8 p.m. I, features a main event between the aforementioned Slice and “The World’s Most Dangerous Man.” The fight is nearly seven years in the making, after a fluke accident caused the cancellation of their first planned meeting.

In the co-main event, a battle for the featherweight championship will go on as planned when Patricio "Pitbull" Freire (23-2) looks to defend his title against a streaking Daniel Weichel (35-8). On his second attempt, “Pitbull” hit the required mark of 145-pounds.

In a critical heavyweight scrap between two larger than life fighters, Bobby Lashley (12-2) looks to continue his undefeated ways in Bellator MMA against a very game Dan “The Man” Charles (9-2). Lashley was originally slated to face James Thompson, but an injury derailed the tilt.

One of MMA’s most promising prospects Henry Corrales (12-0), looks to keep his record unblemished against former featherweight champion Daniel Straus (22-6), who has only suffered three defeats in his last 22 bouts.

In the opening televised bout of the evening, Mike Chandler (12-3) will attempt to return to lightweight glory when he faces Derek Campos (15-4). The Missouri native has been involved in plenty of legendary wars inside the Bellator cage and if his comments at the weigh-ins were any indication, he plans on making his homecoming nothing short of special.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southern Nevada collaborates with new community partners to launch “Men in Mentoring” initiative, aimed at recruiting men as Big Brothers

The need for men to volunteer is BIG: there are currently over 550 boys waiting for a Big Brother in Southern Nevada.

LAS VEGAS Rau hli ntuj 19th, 2015 If you met 12 year old Ryan, he might be a little quiet at first, but once you get to know him he is funny, talkative and outgoing. He loves basketball, hiking, playing hide and seek with his younger sister Alexia and their two dogs, Zach and Zoey. Ryan has been waiting for a Big Brother for almost 15 months. “I want a guy I can look forward to hanging out with and maybe learn a new sport with,” Ryan tells the program staff at Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southern Nevada (BBBSN) when his mother enrolled him in the beginning of 2014. Ryan’s father left us when he was an infant. I know Ryan would benefit from having a Big Brother mentor to take him to a baseball game or a super hero movie. At this point in his life, I don’t think I am making the same impact as a guy could,” Ryan’s mother tells BBBSN.

BBBSN has hundreds of boys just like Ryan that are waiting for men to step up to the plate and become Big Brothers. “We took a look at our recruiting efforts and determined that we need to place a greater emphasis on targeting men and appealing to their personalities,” said Athena Gould, Chief Program Officer for BBBSN, All it takes is 4 hours per month and an 18 month commitment to our program mus mentor one of our boys waiting and give them the extra push they may need to succeed in life.”

This is where Men in Mentoring comes into play. New community partners to BBBSN including Tuff-N-Uff, a local amateur MMA organization, Vegas Lions and Vegas Outlaws Football teams, Alston Business Consulting, Office Depot, Never Give Up Foundation and the Gianniosis Realty Group have joined forces mus highlight guy-centric athletic and cultural events that will ultimately focus on male volunteer recruitment efforts.

The inaugural event will be held in conjunction with Tuff-N-Uff’s annual “Future Stars of MMA Pack the Mack” night at the Thomas & Mack Center on Saturday, Rau hli ntuj 27th. “We are proud to host the first Men in Mentoring group at our organization’s largest event of the year,” said Jeff Meyer, CEO of Tuff-N-Uff, “Fans will receive a special meet & greet with our fighters beginning at 5PM and will have the opportunity to sit nyob rau hauv ib VIP section when the fights start at 6PM. We hope to encourage our fans and fighters to serve their community as mentors. Anyone interested in joining the Men in Mentoring group at their first outing must RSVP to Kyle Dunlap (kdunlap@bbbsn.org / 774-571-0291) in order to attend the meet & greet and sit in the VIP section reserved for BBBSN.

Men in the Las Vegas community are encouraged to participate in future Men in Mentoring events throughout 2015 as well. Future outings include, but are not limited to: behind the scenes with the players of the Vegas Lions football team; train with local MMA fighters at local gyms; and hiking at Red Rock Canyon. Kyle Dunlap, Community Relations Manager and Big Brother with BBBSN, is looking to add more unique and exciting, guy-centric events to the Men in Mentoring roster. Please get in touch with Kyle to inquire about participating in the program, hosting an outing for a group of 20-30 individuals, or about signing up to be a mentor. BOYINGTON GOES HEAD-TO-HEAD WITH RAIO DAYS BEFORE FIGHT: “I’M GONNA GO IN THERE AND DESTROY HIM

NEF_FNVXIII_madeinUSA_FB_final+(1)

Lewiston, Maine (Rau hli ntuj 10, 2015) – New England Fights (NEF), America’s number-one regional fight promotion, will hold its eighteenth mixed-martial-arts (MMA) event, “NEF XVIII: MADE IN AMERICA,” hnub Saturday no hmo ntuj, Rau hli ntuj 13, 2015 at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee in Lewiston, Maine. Recently, headliners BrucePretty BoyBoyington (10-8), the NEF MMA Professional Lightweight Champion, thiab JohnFirst ClassRaio(2-7) joined NEF co-owner and matchmaker Matt Peterson on a specialHead-to-Headedition of the NEF Podcast. Boyington and Raio discussed the upcoming rematch and the controversy surrounding their first meeting in February 2014, among other topics.

The interview quickly turned to the top of the first fight. Raio appeared to apply a rear-naked choke to Boyington on the mat late in the first round. Boyington began waving his hand in the air and referee Jimmy Bickford quickly stepped in to stop the fight. Much has been made of the infamoushand wave. While Bickford saw it as a sign of Boyington’s submission, Boyington has contended that he was merely signaling to his fans in the crowd that the hold was not doing any damage.

I can tell you how that night ended,” recalled Raio of the first bout. “Basically, Bruce had given me his back. When I took his back, I had the hooks in and I had the rear-naked choke across his jaw line. I was trying to pressure it under his throat, and as I grabbed my left bicep and my left hand was going behind his head, the ref stopped the fightI was amazed that he had tapped because, honestly, I knew that I had a lot of pressure on his jawIf in fact he was waving, that sucks for him.

In that situation, I specifically remember Bickford looking at me, I’m face up, he’s going for my neck and I’m waving,” said Boyington. “Everybody starts roaring real loud and I remember Bickford saying, ‘No Bruce, you can’t say that’If you think that I’m submitting or I’m in trouble or can’t breathe, you don’t tell the fighter, “You can’t say that,” you just jump in and you stop the fight. I feel like he made a mistake. I feel like he realizes thatI see a lot of different things that John has said online, and a lot of things other people have said, and that’s when I really started to get bothered by what had happened. I felt like he could’ve handled it better.

Prior to Boyington giving up his back, many felt he had been winning that first round. Indeed, Boyington’s striking seemed to be on point that evening. Peterson asked both competitors to speculate on what would have happened had the referee not stopped the bout at that point.

Inevitably, I think John would’ve been knocked out,” stated Boyington emphatically. “I don’t think I’m gonna submit him, because that would be his best chance with me. He’s strong enough to defend a submission.

I think if the ref didn’t stop at the time, when I was on his jaw with my forearm and I was reaching behind his neck,” Raio speculated, “I believe my arm would’ve slid under his throat and it would’ve ended sometime soon before the round. So, I don’t think it would’ve gone to a second round.

In the days, weeks and months following the fight, both Boyington’s and Raio’s massive fan-followings have been very vocal on social media regarding the outcome of the bout. The heated debate has raged between both sides for well over a year now. With so much at stake for each side atNEF XVIII,” both athletes touched on what the rematch means to them, and what they need to prove this coming weekend.

I just can’t go in there and beat John,” said Boyington. “Even his own fans are expecting thatI can’t just go in there on June 13thand beat John Raio. I gotta go in there and destroy him. Or I still lose out on this fight. I know that, and I’m gonna go in there and make that statement. And I’m gonna do it with one arm, because the other arm isn’t even working right nowI haven’t worried about this date from day one. It’s nothing to do with John Raio. I don’t disrespect the guy. I don’t not like the guy. He’s a good man. I’m just at another level. I need to show up and prove that. That’s what it is to me. It’s not about me beating John. It’s about me showing everybody where I belong.

In regard to Bruce finishing me quickly, and making it easy, and not really worrying about the fight too much, I just find it disrespectful like a lot of things he’s said to me, my family and my friends,” replied Raio. “There were times after the last fight when people were congratulating me (on Facebook) and he’d go on like a one or two paragraph rant on every single comment everyone had put on my page for like three days straight. So, after that I said ‘Bruce and I aren’t really friends anymore,’ so I deleted him. I liked him before that fightbut when people disrespect me like he has it’s hard to like the guy.
