Ward, 52, is the pride of Lowell, Massachusetts, where he is a living legend. A three-time New England Golden Gloves champion as an amateur boxer, Ward fought professionally between 1985-2003, registering a 38-13 (27 Kos) record as a junior welterweight throughout his pro career. He is best known for his epic trilogy with the late Arturo Gatti, in which he became the first fighter with double-digit losses to earn a $1-million purse (ka makhetlo a mabeli).
An all-action, crowed-pleasing fighter, Ward was involved in three Fight of the Year honors, the first and third of the Gatti trilogy, along with a memorable match with Emanuel Augustus. Ward was the winner in two (first Gatti and Augustus) of those classic fights.
Boston-native Mark Wahlberg portrayed Ward in, The Fighter, a movie about Micky’s life that won two Academy Awards.
To be honorary captain of Team USA means a lot to me,” Ward said. “It’s great having elite amateur boxing back in Boston with the national teams from the United States and Ireland. It’s especially exciting for me as an Irish-American.
The 44-year-old McBride was born in Clones, Ireland. O ne a e leng setho sa 1992 Ireland Olympic Boxing Team at the age of 19, competing in the Olympic Games in Barcelona, Spain. Two years earlier, he represented Ireland at the European Championships and one of his teammates was Billy Walsh, Team USA’s current head coach of Team USA and former chief trainer for Team Ireland.
Like other Irish boxers, McBride came to the United States to enhance his professional career, landing in the predominately Irish neighborhood of Dorchester, a working-class section Boston, back in 1999. Le 6′ 6″, 285-pound McBride started training in Brockton, MA with Goody Petronelli, who had trained Babatsehang Marvin Hagler, and later Packy Collins, the brother of another Petronelli-trained fighter, lefatše 'mampoli Stevie Collins.
McBride fought professionally between 1992-2011, retiring with a 35-10-1 (29 Kos), highlighted by his shocking sixth-round knockout of Tyson in 2005, driving theBaddest Man on the Planetinto ring retirement.
I feel good about being honorary captain of Team Ireland,” remarked the still thickly Irish-brogue McBride, who still lives with his family in Dorchester. “I’m honored to be carrying the Irish flag for these fighters. I’m not sure how many of them remember me as the man who beat Tyson. I know some of the Irish coaches and I still support boxing in Ireland as well as America. I just love boxing. And it’s always a pleasure to be with my friend, Micky Ward. He’s a good lad.

I am a true Irishman who developed through a system that won multiple titles and I was the Irish Team captain for five years. I’m helping develop strong relations between USA and Ireland that can help both programs. Ireland has been among the best of the worldamazing considering the geographical size of Irelandwith its fightersgreat hearts along with their technique and skill. There’s a lot of talent and resources in the states, but amateur boxers have been taught to develop skills more for professional boxing. Here there is a variety of different ethnic groups: Mexicans, African-American and Caucasians, le eena o. It’s truly a melting pot and each has a unique style of boxing. We are now providing coaching education for US programs to be sustainable long term.
Boston, ehlile, is known for being Irish friendly, to say the least. The Mayor of Boston, for example, ke Marty Walsh. Coach Walsh has only been in Boston once, 10 years ago with his wife for a short holiday.
I didn’t do or get to see too much,” Walsh added. “but I know that there’s a lot of Irish history in Boston. Boston is a home away from home for the Irish. I have some friends and family there. I even joke that the mayor is my cousin. I understand that there are a lot of Irish in Springfield and Manchester, hammoho. I’m looking forward to going to all three cities on this tour.

Fightin’ Irish” boxing history

Many Irish and Irish-American boxers have fought in the Greater Boston area, some born and others resettling there. This rich tradition continues next month in a different way when the three-city 2018 USA vs.. Ireland Northeast Boxing Tour kicks-off Mantaha, March 12, at the newly renovated Royale Entertainment Complex in Boston’s famed theater district. The Boston stop, which is being presented by Budweiser, will have general admission tickets for $20.00 and a limited amount of $30.00 reserved tickets go on sale today (Mantaha, Feb. 12) ka 12 p.m. LE are available to purchase online here.

The tradition started back in the 19go th century with The Boston Strongboy,” John. L. Sullivan (Roxbury, MA), the first millionaire American athlete, as well as the firstglovesworld heavyweight champion and finalbare knucklesheavyweight champion of the world. An International Boxing Hall of Famer, Sullivan won 38 ea 38 lan lintoa, 30 coming by knockout, with only one loss and two draws.
Another Hall-of-Famer from that era, Jake Kilrain (29-5-8, 17 Kos), lived in Somerville and Quincy, both Boston suburbs. Kilrain (1829-1899) also reigned as world heavyweight champion.
Irish boxers from Greater Boston continued this rich tradition through the end of the 19go th and beginning of the 20go th centuries with world champions and top contenders such as welterweight Paddy Duffy (31-3,16, 18 Kos), Lawrence welterweight Mike Glover(Cavanaugh – 30-5-5, 16 Kos), and Charlestown welterweight Mike “TwinSullivan(28-6-16, 17 Kos), and Newton bantamweight Jimmy Walsh (33-10-20, 14 Kos)
In the 1950’s, Woburn lightweight “Irish” Tommy Collins (61-12, 44 Kos) was dropped 10 times at the Boston Garden by world champion Jimmy Carter, until he finally succumbed in the fourth round. His gutsy performance, leha ho le joalo, earned him an appearance on the popular Ed Sullivan Show.
Arlington heavyweight Tom McNeeley (37-14, 28 Kos), unsuccessfully fought for the world title in 1961, stopped in the fourth round of his Toronto fight versus defending champion Floyd Patterson, and McNeeley’s son, Boston-native and later Medfield resident Petrose “Leholiotsoana” McNeeley (47-7, 30 Kos) famously was stopped in the opening round by “Tšepe” Mike Tyson in the latter’s first fight after his release from prison.
In the 1980’s, Irish boxers made their way to Boston to fight; some returned home after their careers, others relocated in the area. A 1984, Ireland-native Sean Mannion (42-14, 13 Kos), who had moved to the Dorchester section of Boston, lost a 15-round decision in Madison Square Garden to Mike McCallum for the World Boxing Association (WBA) Super Middleweight World Championship.
Steve kekana “Celtic WarriorCollins (25-2-1, 18 Kos) moved to Everett, later to Brockton, to work with Goody le Pat Petronelli, who handled Babatsehang Marvin Hagler throughout is Hall of Fame career. Collins captured the World Boxing Organization (WBO) middleweight and super middleweight world titles before moving back to Ireland.
Collinsyounger brother, Packie Collins, also moved to Brockton to fight. He later worked with Irish heavyweight champion Kevin “The Clones ColossusMcBride (35-10-1, 29 Kos), who went on to knock Tyson out and into retirement. McBride, who still lives in Dorchester, was a stablemate of former Team Ireland head coach and current Team USA head coach, Billy Walsh, at the European Games. Both were also Ireland Olympians, ka ho latellana, a 1988 le 1992.
Another Ireland Olympian, WaynePocket RocketMcCullough (27-7, 18 Kos), moved to Las Vegas from Northern Ireland. The luck of the Irish wasn’t with him in Boston in 1997, when he lost his World Boxing Council (WBC) bantamweight title at Hynes Convention Center, by way of a 12-round split decision to Daniele Zaragoza.
Arguably the most famous and popular Irish-American boxer, outside of Sullivan and Jack Dempsey, is Lowell junior welterweight “Irish” Micky Ward (38-13, 27 Kos), who was involved in three Fight of the Year award winners, two from his epic trilogy with Arturo Gatti, and the first boxer with more than 10 career losses to earn a $1-million purse. Ward’s life was portrayed by another Boston icon, actor Mark Wahlberg, in the award-winning movie, “The Fighter.
Irish boxers are still coming to Boston to fight. Locally-based Murphys Boxing has promoted numerous shows in Boston featuring world-class boxers such as Gary “Spike” O'Sullivan and undefeated super bantamweight TJ “Matla a” Doheny (18-0, 13 Kos), as well as undefeated rising stars such as StingRay Mayotte and New England & Massachusetts heavyweight champion Niall Kennedy (10-0, 6 Kos).
The Irish team will announce its boxers later this month after the conclusion of its National Championships.

Ellis (14-0-1, 8 Kos), ea Lynn, Boima., and Brooklyn’s Younan (13-0, 9 Kos) will clash in the 10-round main event of a four-fight telecast that features eight fighters with a combined record of 113-3-3.

The Brooklyn-born Younan is a former amateur standout who was dubbed by The New York Times as “a boxing prodigy” as a 10-year-old. And while he’ll face the toughest opponent of his career on Feb. 2, he’s confident he has the pedigree and talent to become a world champion.

“I love being in that spotlight, putting on a show and hearing the fans,"O ile a re. “There’s nothing like it. I definitely think I can be the face of the super middleweight division.

“After you see me fight, you are going to remember what you saw. Sena ke nako ea ka ke. This might not be a world title yet, but this is my first step.”

He added: “I don’t think there’s anything I can’t handle. 2018 should definitely be an interesting year. This is my breakout year.”

Ronald Ellis Camp Notes

Ellis Faces Fellow Undefeated Super Middleweight Prospect Junior Younan Latelang Labohlano A Main Event Of ShoBox: The New isa molokong o mong

Labohlano, Feb. 2 Live On SHOWTIME® At 10 p.m. LE/PT
From WinnaVegas Casino ka Sloan, Iowa

NEW YORK (Jan. 26, 2018) – Undefeated super middleweight Ronald Ellis is preparing in Los Angeles for his main event matchup against fellow undefeated Junior Younan that headlines a ShoBox: The New Generation quadrupleheader ka Labohlano, Feb. 2, phela ka ho Showtime ka 10 p.m. LE/PT from WinnaVegas Casino in Sloan, Iowa.

Ellis (14-0-1, 10 Kos), ea Lynn, Boima., and Brooklyn’s Younan (13-0, 9 Kos) will clash in the 10-round main event of a four-fight telecast that features eight fighters with a combined record of 113-3-3.

Ellis, who now calls Los Angeles home, has been working hard at the Iron Gym under the watchful eye of Jerry Rosenberg and his father Ronald Ellis Sr.

My camp has been solid. I have been getting good sparring. We have been training for Younan like he is any other opponent,” Ellis said.

In Younan, Ellis has an idea on what his foe will bring to the ring on Feb. 2.

I know he is a young and undefeated fighter,” o ile a re. “I have been reading some things where he says he is going to bring the fight to me. He seems like he likes to talk a lot, but that doesn’t do anything come fight night.

This will be the third ShoBox appearance for Ellis, as he is coming off an eight-round unanimous decision over Christopher Brooker last January. Ellis feels that his big fight resume will be the key against Younan.

My experience will definitely be an advantage,” Ellis said. “I have been here on ShoBox two times before. I will be relaxed and comfortable as we approach the fight. This is his first time. I expect him to be real hyper.

This is a natural progression for me. I went from fighting on the undercard of ShoBox, and now I am the main event. A win will get me world ranked and hopefully catapult me into theMoqebelo night fights on SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING. I know I can’t look ahead. I need to win first.

The event is promoted by GH3 Promotions and Roc Nation Sports in association with Victory Promotions and Ringside Ticket. Litekete li feela $10 general admission prior to the event and $20 ka Feb. 2. For more information call: 1.800.HOT.WINN ext. 7117.

THIRD-ROUND RESULTS: 72nd annual Lowell Sun Charities Golden Gloves Championships

Central N.E. semifinals round action
this Thursday night at Lowell Auditorium
Lowell, Boima. (January 20, 2018) – The 72nd annual Lowell Sun Charities Golden Gloves Championships continued last night with Central New England (Greater Lowell) novice and open class action at historic Lowell Memorial Auditorium.
Novice quarterfinals and semifinals matches were held last night, as well as preliminary bouts in the open division. The female championship bout in the middleweight class was also held last night, in which Amesbury’s (MA) Jessica McFadden edged Brookline’s Samantha Surface, 3-2.
The Fight of the Night was an open-class welterweight showdown between Salem’s (MA) Charlie Espinal and Amesbury’s Kenny Lawson, which Espinal won by a score of 5-0.
It was a good night,” New England Golden Gloves Executive Director Bobby Russo a re. “Good weather helped draw a big crowd, the largest of the season so far. There were a lot of good matches, some open division to go along with the novices. The Espinal-Larson match was the best of the night, a war from start to finish. It was the type fight you didn’t want either fighter to lose. Espinal had a little better boxing and experience that carried him to victory.
The action switches to Labone mantsiboea (Jan. 19) next week at Lowell Memorial Auditorium with more novice and open class matches. See the complete 2018 schedule of events below as well as last night’s complete results.
