MIKE HANSEN: FACING FEAR HEADFIRST

Mike Hansen

Lewiston, Maine (Jen 15, 2016) – Fighting anyone, nenpòt kote, anytime and under any circumstances has become Mike Hansen’s calling card with New England Fights.

No surprise, Lè sa a,, that the 30-year-old father of three from Rumford, ME will gladly entertain the idea of a mixed martial arts contest … against an opponent about whom he admittedly knows precious little … on the eve of Father’s Day.

Hansen (4-4) will take on Robert Laroski in a heavyweight clash at “NEF 24: Promised Land” on Samdi, Jen 18 at Androscoggin Bank Colisee in Lewiston.

There is no fear of the unknown in a man who has carved out his reputation confronting substantially bigger foes since his days as a state champion wrestler at Mountain Valley High School. During his relatively short time in NEF, Hansen has fought as a middleweight, light heavyweight and heavyweight.

“When I took the fight (at NEF 23 in Massachusetts) against Brendan Battles, people were saying, ‘You’re crazy! He’s going to bust your head!’ I understand why the weight classes exist, and I respect that it’s about safety and all that, but I’ve always felt that a fighter should be ready to fight anybody, pa gen pwoblèm sa,” Hansen said. “In high school, I would drink two gallons of water and put lead in my uniform just so I could get to the minimum weight for the unlimited class.”

That’s the attitude of a fighter whose skill and talent level far exceed his current record as a professional.

Hansen’s docket includes a stoppage win over former NEF “Fighter of the Year” Crowsneck Boutin. His record also includes TKO losses to Battles and Cody Anderson and a choke-out at the hands of Zach Elkins.

When he reflects upon his unique life story, Hansen, who fought twice for the World Fighting League as a 20-year-old college student, marvels that he ever got back into the cage at all.

“I started the winter of 2004-05. I started training because I had gone from 187 to 242 pounds in a few months. I was seeing stretch marks,” Hansen recalled. “I was pretty upset with myself for allowing that to happen. I started doing Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu two nights a week to get in shape. Then I went home for the summer and ended up with my first fight in August. My friends got me the fight without my coaches knowing about it. They told me it was a good thing I won, or they would have kicked my butt.”

Hansen kept a promise to his father to quit the sport after a knockout loss to Alexander Chianurashvili in 2006. He was studying at Massachusetts College of Pharmacy, with intentions to enter the medical field.

He was stabbed and attacked with a baseball bat by three men in a case of mistaken identity not long thereafter. “I walked out of the hospital the next day, and all three of them were still in there from the beating I gave them in self-defense,” Hansen said proudly.

That dogged determination served Hansen well in the United States Army, where he studied in the elite Combatives program.

“They ask you ‘Who wins the fight?’ and the answer is, ‘Whoever’s buddy gets there first to help him clean up.’ That’s what Combatives taught me: How to survive that extra 30 to 60 segonn,” Hansen said. “Work ethic is what it taught me. It helped me grow and do things I might have questioned mentally whether or not I could do. Not many people find that extra little motivation. The Army taught me how to find it and utilize it.”

A few years later, Hansen found that inner fire again. Even as he returned to coaching wrestlers in his hometown, his own physical fitness suffered as work and fatherhood took precedence.

Hansen vividly describes sitting in a bean bag chair, eating snack food, watching TV at 2:11 a.m. when his phone rang. He assumed it was a friend in trouble.

“It was (NEF co-owner) Matt Peterson. Our families grew up maybe 200 yards apart. My high school wrestling coach had called him, unbeknownst to me, to tell him he needed to get me back in the cage,” Hansen said.

Three weeks later ak 20 pounds lighter, Hansen dispatched super heavyweight fixture Artie Mullen at “NEF 16: New Blood Rising,” and the comeback was on.

Nan la 15 months that have followed, Hansen has been instrumental in launching Berserkers MMA and building his reputation as both a fighter and an instructor.

Life is blossoming at home, also. Hansen is the father of two girls, laj 5 ak 2, and a boy of four months. His older daughter, Kaydn, often accompanies Dad to the gym at Greater Rumford Community Center. He returns the favor by chaperoning field trips for her kindergarten class.

“She and her friends will be on the playground practicing boxing stances and stuff,” Hansen said. “Her teacher says it’s adorable. Hopefully she is learning to take care of herself so I don’t have to.”

Kaydn’s parents are making plans to take her to her first live NEF show after she turns 6. Pou kounye a, she is content to watch her Dad’s fights on YouTube.

“If we’re watching TV together,” Hansen said, “we have a thing where I get two shows and then she gets two shows. If I put in a fight tape, she’ll say, ‘Daddy, I know this doesn’t count as one of your shows, because this is your work.’”

FORMER STATE CHAMPION RETURNS TO BATTLE THE KEN DOLL

Lewiston, Maine (Me 16, 2016) - New England Goumen (Nef) returns to Lewiston, Maine on June 18, 2016 with the fight promotion’s next mixed-martial-arts (Mma) and professional boxing extravaganza, “Nef 24: PROMISED LAND.NEF executives have announced the signing of a professional featherweight MMA bout to the card featuring Matt “Ken poupe” Denning (3-2) ak Brandon Bushaw (1-2).

Denning is coming off a huge submission victory over Derek Shorey (3-7) this past weekend atNEF 23” in Hyannis, Massachusetts. The first time the pair met in 2014, it took Denning a mere 2:28 to submit Shorey. Denning topped that performance in the rematch by finishing Shorey in just 37-seconds. The win was a rebound for Denning after back-to-back losses in the NEF MMA cage. Just last month in Lewiston, he was stopped in the first round by Josh Harvey (1-0). Koulye a,, he will look to make it two wins in a row when he takes on Bushaw on June18.
I’d like to thank New England fights for giving me another opportunity to show my skills and how hard I have been working,” di Denning. “This is my third fight in eight weeks. After fighting someone as tough as Josh Harvey, I’m prepared to battle with anyone. I’m going to keep the fight in my hands and dominate on the feet, lit, or if it hits the ground. Bushaw is an experienced fighter and is going to bring it fast. I’m looking forward to it and extremely confident with staying in the win column.

Brandon Bushaw won state championships in wrestling for Westbrook High School in 1998 ak 1999 ak yon dosye konbine nan 73-3 for those two seasons. He went on to wrestle at Michigan State with former Ultimate Fighting Championship (Ch) Light Heavyweight Title Holder Rashad Evans (24-5-1) as a teammate.

Recent years have seen Bushaw relocate from Maine to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina where he trains at Fitness Edge MMA. He has made the trip back home to the Pine Tree State to compete for NEF on four separate occasions. Bushaw’s last appearance on an NEF card was in the fall of 2014 against Elias Leland (2-1). It was Bushaw’s only loss to date in his home state of Maine. The upcoming fight with Denning will see Bushaw move up in weight from the 135-pound bantamweight division to the 145-pound featherweight division.

I am beyond excited to return to my home state of Maine and fight under the NEF banner for the fifth time,” exclaimed Bushaw. “I am making the move up to 145, where I intend to stay for the rest of my career. That is, nan kou, if my sole loss in Maine will accept a rematchI would gladly make the cut to fight Eli Leland again at 135! I am making this trip with ‘The Fearless One,’ ‘The Titanium Warrior,’ Amos Collins! I look up to Amos as a mentor, a friend, and one ballsy motherf$%ker! I can’t wait to put my fist on ‘Ken Doll’s’ figi, and blow him a kiss when he wakes up!”

ALL ROADS LEAD TO MONUMENTAL FIGHT CARD IN LEWISTON

Lewiston, Maine (Mas 31, 2016) - New England Goumen (Nef), Nimewo-yon sèl batay pwomosyon rejyonal Amerik la, pral kenbe evènman pwochen li yo, “Nef 22: Tout wout mennen isit la” sou Samdi, Avril 23, 2016 nan Androscoggin Bank Colisée nan nan Lewiston, Maine. The fight card will feature a mix of mixed-martial-arts (Mma) and professional boxing bouts. Earlier today, NEF announced the full fight card for the event. The fight card is scheduled to feature three professional boxing matches, six professional MMA bouts, and twelve exciting amateur MMA contests.

On the professional boxing side of the card, Northeast Junior Welterweight Champion, and the pride of West Forks, Maine, Brandon “Cannon an” Berry(11-1, 7 Ko) returns to the ring for a six-rounder with Detroit, Michigan’s James Lester (10-9, 4 Ko). Berry, one of the most popular boxers to ever come out of Maine, will look for his fourth consecutive victory since returning from a shoulder injury last year.

That will prove easier said than done with Lester standing in the opposite corner. Lester is a product of the world-famous Kronk Gym in Detroit where world champions like Thomas “Itman” HEARNS (61-5-1, 48 Ko), Oscar De La oya (39-6, 30 Ko), Lennox Lewis (41-2-1, 32 Ko) and Wladimir Klitschko (64-4, 53 Ko) have trained under the late Emmanuel Steward. Lester was ranked number-two nationally as an amateur. He presents a dangerous threat to Berry, one that could very well play the role of “beke” to “Cannon an” and his legion of fans.

After a bloody war of a professional boxing debut at “Nef 21” mwa pase a, NEF MMA regular Crowsneck Boutin (0-0-1) will once again step into the boxing ring, this time facing Brandon Montella (3-0, 2 Ko). Montella, now a resident of Massachusetts, grew up in Maine and served in the United States Marine Corps.

Headlining the professional MMA portion of the fight card will be Izayi “Viking a” Erickson (6-4) ak Devin Powell (5-1) in a lightweight contest. Both fighters are currently on a three-fight win streak.

“I try to focus on what is right in front of me,” said Erickson during a recent interview on The MMA Report Podcast. “I never looked past my opponents but I like to think what the reward is going to be when I beat this guy.

Neither athlete can afford to overlook the other, but a win for either could very well mean a call from one of the national promotions. Erickson has been there before with Bellator. Powell is an all-around talent with some slick finishes to his credit.

This is the type of MMA fight we absolutely love,” said NEF co-owner and promoter Nick DiSalvo. “You have two guys who match up so well. They’ve both been racking up the wins. They’ve faced some of the same opponents. They’re both solid on the mat and on their feet. I expect this to be yet another crazy, wild NEF MMA main event!”

Crazy” ak “wilddo not even begin to describe the grudge that has developed between Josh “Hook OnHarvey (0-0) ak Matt “Ken poupe” Denning (2-1). The bitter rivals will meet at a fight weight of 150-pounds at “nef 22” in an MMA bout. The bout will be Harvey’s professional debut after a stellar 5-1 amateur career that saw him capture the NEF MMA Amateur Lightweight Title, as well as the northeast regions number-one ranking. The well-publicized personal issues between Harvey and Denning will be settled in the cage on April 23rd.

The professional portion of the MMA card will also feature the pro debut of Harvey’s Young’s MMA teammate Arawon “Inplakabl” Lacey (0-0) as he takes on veteran “Enkasabl 2.0” Derek Shorey (3-5) nan yon bout plum. Lacey vacated the NEF MMA Amateur Featherweight Title in order to turn professional.

That title will not stay vacant very long as Kalèb Hall (6-3) ak Erik Nelson (2-2) face off to determine a new champion at the top of the amateur MMA card. Hall is coming off a first-round submission win at “Nef XX” otòn dènye, while Nelson recently picked up a unanimous decision victory at “Nef 21.”

The amateur MMA card will also feature a women’s fight between Angela Young(0-1) ak “Hollywood” Hannah Sparrell (1-0). Young and Sparrell made their respective debuts last year at “Nef XIX.”

WOMEN’S MMA FIGHT CONFIRMED FOR NEF 22 IN LEWISTON

The fight card will feature a mix of mixed-martial-arts (Mma) and professional boxing bouts. Earlier today, NEF announced the addition of an amateur women’s featherweight contest to the MMA portion of the “nef 22” kat batay. “Hollywood” Hannah Sparrell (1-0) ap batay Angela Young (0-1) at a fight weight of 140-pounds.

Hannah Sparrell was introduced to the sport when she began taking her daughter to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) classes. Sparrell soon found herself training at John Raio’s First Class MMA in Brunswick, Maine. She made her in-cage debut last fall against Young’s teammate Kira Innocenti (0-1) nan “Nef XIX” nan Lewiston. Sparrell was victorious that evening, scoring a unanimous decision from the judges after an exhausting three-round fight. She looks forward to representing First Class MMA for a second time atNEF 22.

I’m excited to be entering the NEF cage again, sou April 23rd, against Angela Young,” said Sparrell. “Angela, coming from the school recently named New England’s ‘team of the year,’ has proven to be a heavy hitter, as we saw in her blood-shedding battle at ‘NEF XIX.’ Sa yo te di, First Class has been putting its name on the map, displaying our skilled training, coaches and leadership, and I couldn’t be more thrilled about going head-to-head against Young’s MMA once again. I learned a lot from the experience from my last fight and have used it as a catalyst in my focused training this winter. I will be entering the NEFXXII cage confidently and ready for a good solid fight.

Angela Young is the wife of Young’s MMA founder and head coach Chris Young. Like Sparrell, Young made her debut in the NEF cage last fall at “Nef XIX.” In a wild, “fight of the nightperformance, Young battled back and forth with Rachel Reinheimer (2-0) of Team Sityodtong. Reinheimer would win the decision on the judges’ performance, but Young would win the respect of the entire New England MMA community with her valiant effort. Sou April 23rd, Young vows to chalk up the first win on her record.

I am beyond ecstatic for the opportunity to fight for NEF again,” deklare Young. “Especially against an opponent as respectful and professional as Hannah. I’ve put the work in, I’ve improved my game and I’m aiming for another ‘fight of the night.’ Fwa sa a,, sepandan, my hand will be raised.

Lewiston, Maine (Fevriye 22, 2016) - New England Goumen (Nef), Nimewo-yon sèl batay pwomosyon rejyonal Amerik la, pral kenbe evènman pwochen li yo, “Nef 22: Tout wout mennen isit la” sou Samdi, Avril 22, 2016nan Androscoggin Bank Colisée nan nan Lewiston, Maine. The fight card will feature a mix of mixed-martial-arts (Mma) and professional boxing bouts. Earlier today, NEF announced the main event of the boxing portion of the “nef 22” kat batay. Northeast Junior Welterweight Champion Brandon “Cannon an” Berry (11-1, 7 Ko) ap pran sou James Lester (10-9, 4 Ko) in a non-title, six-round bout at 140-pounds.

Berry, the pride of small-town West Forks, Maine, has shined since returning from a shoulder injury last year. He has won his last three in a row, including a technical knockout (KI MOUN KI) stoppage of Tollison Lewis (2-1, 1 KO) earlier this month in Lewiston. The upcoming fight with Lester will see Berry return to his native 140-pound junior welterweight division for the first time since his injury. All three of his recent wins have come in the heavier welterweight and super welterweight divisions.

April 23rd will be a big turning point in my boxing career,” said Berry when reached for comment. “This will be my fourth time headlining NEF’s boxing portion of the event, and I want to thank Nick (DiSalvo, NEF promoter), Matt (Peterson, NEF matchmaker) and Pete (Czymbor, NEF Director of Boxing Operations) for the opportunity. I asked for a challenge and to make it back down to my regular fight weight of 140-pounds, and that’s what I’m getting with Detroit’s James Lester. I think the crowd will be very happy and impressed with the talent level James brings. This is a big test for me and I hope that with nine weeks to prepare it’s a test that I can pass. He brings so much to the table that can give me problems in the ring, so me showing up anything less than 100% will be unacceptable.

I know that Tommy (Duquette), Ed (LaVache), Luke (Yetten) and the rest of Boston Boxing will push me to the limit and bring me into the ring prepared. James Lester has been around and fought some very good fighters. He had an amazing amateur career, and has spent years training at one of the most legendary boxing facility’s in the world, the Kronk Gym. Who doesn’t want to see this fight? See you all April 23rd, and as always thank you all so much for the amazing support. The tickets sales are unreal.

As Berry noted, James Lester is a product of the world-famous Kronk Gym of Detroit, Michigan. It was there he honed his craft alongside world champions like Thomas “Itman” HEARNS (61-5-1, 48 Ko), Oscar De La oya (39-6, 30 Ko), Lennox Lewis (41-2-1, 32 Ko) and Wladimir Klitschko (64-4, 53 Ko), nan non yon kèk, under legendary trainer Emanuel Steward. Kòm yon amatè, Lester was ranked nationally at number-two. He competed against the likes of future Olympian Andre Dirrell (24-2, 16 Ko) and future WBC Super Middleweight Champion Anthony Dirrell (28-1-1, 22 Ko) while in the amateur ranks. The bout with Berry will mark the second time Lester has ventured to New England in his professional career. He competed on a card in Worcester, Massachusetts in 2011. Lester looks forward to making his return to the region.

Fighting Brandon will be exciting, and I’m ready for anything he has to bring,” said Lester. “Fighting in New England was awesome a few years ago against Ryan Kielczewski (24-1, 7 Ko). I met some real good people there and can’t wait to come put on a show for them again.
