Banner Promotions re-signs former world title challenger and Boxcino 2014 champion Willie Monroe Jr.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Philadelphia, PA (July 12, 2016)–Banner Promotions is pleased to announce the re-signing of former world title challenger and Boxcino 2014 Middleweight champion, Willie Monroe Jr. to an exclusive promotional agreement.
Monroe of Rochester, New York has a record of 20-2 with 6 knockouts and is coming off a 10-round unanimous decision over fellow former world title challenger and Boxcino champion, John Thompson on June 11th in Verona, New York.
The 29 year-old Monroe turned professional in 2008 and won his first 10 bouts.  Monroe won the 2014 Boxcino Middleweight tournament with wins over Donatas Bondorovas, Vitally Kopylenko, and Brandon Adams.
Those wins catapulted him into a bout with WBA/Interim WBC Middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin.
Monroe performed admirably in the bout, which took place on May 16, 2015 at The Forum in Inglewood, California.
“I’m excited to re-sign with Banner Promotions. Artie has been nothing but great to me, and he’ll put me in position to fight against the Danny Jacobs and Canelos of the boxing world,” said Willie Monroe Jr.
“It feels good to have a fresh start over. I am coming off of a huge win on Showtime vs. John Thompson, and I now have a great team watching my back with my brother, Trent Monroe, TJ Nolan and Adrian Clark as my Strategic Partner.”
“Doing what was best for Willie was the focal point in negotiations. We put our heads together and structured a great deal for Willie with Banner Promotions. I am looking forward to working with Artie to map out things for Willie,” said Adrian Clark, Monroe’s Strategic Partner.
“We are excited to have Willie back in the fold,” said Banner Promotions President, Arthur Pelullo.
“Willie has showed not only in the Boxcino tournament, but in his fight against Golovkin, that he is one of the top middleweights in the world.  He had a great performance against John Thompson, and now he is ready for any challenge in the division.  We will be actively pursuing all of those opportunities for Willie.”

Erislandy Lara Talks Future Plans

HOUSTON, TX (May 24, 2016) – WBA and IBO Super-Welterweight Champion, Erislandy “The American Dream” Lara (23-2-2, 13 KOs) is focused on breaking the record for most consecutive world title defenses at 154-pounds if he can’t land a big fight.  The record, which was set by Gianfranco Rosi with 11 defenses of the IBF title, has stood strong since January of 1993.
If potential showdowns at middleweight with champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin or a rematch with Saul “Canelo” Alvarez can’t come to fruition, then Lara will happily defend his titles with honor.
“I’m ready to step up and fight anyone in my division or if a big fight can be made at middleweight I’m willing to be great.” said Erislandy Lara. “My first choice is to fight GGG.  My next choice would be to have a rematch with Canelo.  If either fight can’t be made, then my focus will be to put my name in the record books.  All the fights at this level are tough so to break the record for most consecutive title defenses at super-welterweight would be unbelievable.”
“I’m ready to fight anybody between welterweight and middleweight.” said Erislandy Lara. “My first choice is to fight GGG because I feel he’s the toughest opponent and would be a fight that would solidify my legacy.  My next choice would be to have a rematch with Canelo because we all know there’s unfinished business with lots of controversy.  If either fight can’t be made, then my focus will be to put my name in the record books and defend my titles 12 times to break the record and unify them all at the same time.”

KAZAKH BROOKLYN BRAWLERS NIYAZOV, EYUBOV EAGERLY AWAIT GGG’S RETURN TO THE GARDEN

BROOKLYN, N.Y. (Oct. 14, 2015) – When undefeated middleweight titleholder Gennady Golovkin stepped into the ring at Madison Square Garden last May and knocked out Daniel Geale – logging what was at the time his 17th-straight TKO victory – many New Yorkers took notice of the Kazakh boxing champion for the first time.

Now, when GGG tilts with David Lemieux this coming Saturday at “The World’s Most Famous Arena,” he brings with him a global following. And for at least two of his Kazakh countryman and boxing colleagues who now make their homes and train in the Borough of Brooklyn, instead of saying, “I told you so,” or “He’s all ours, we knew him first,” they’ll simply be beaming with pride among the thousands of spectators at “The Mecca of Boxing” this weekend.

Undefeated junior lightweight contender Dimash Niyazov of Bensonhurst – a Brooklyn police officer whose story was chronicled by the Wall Street Journal this past August, and whose next Brooklyn Brawl fight is Oct. 29 at the Aviator Sports and Events Complex in South Brooklyn – was born in Kazakhstan and came to New York when he was 13 years old. Like many, Niyazov believes that as big as luminary as Golovkin currently is, as he continues to amass world titles, add to his incredible 33-0 record and increase his stunning 30 KO total, his star can continue to rise to the highest apex of boxing today.

“Right now he’s one of the biggest things in boxing,” said Niyazov, who himself is undefeated as a pro at 8-0-3 (5 KOs). “Boxing people talk about him like he might replace Floyd Mayweather at the top. He’s at least in that neighborhood. I’m very proud because he’s from my country, he’s from my homeland. I’m very proud when someone from my country succeeds in any sport, but especially because it’s boxing and I’m a boxer. It inspires me because I see him and I think I can be the same thing.”

For Bakhtiyar Eyubov – Niyazov’s friend and training partner at Fight Factory Gym in Gravesend, Brooklyn, and a native of Aktobe, Kazakhstan – the connection to GGG runs even deeper. The power-puncher, who improved to 8-0 with eight pro KOs this past Aug. 25 in Coney Island, is considered by many to be the second-hardest Kazakh hitter in contemporary boxing, ranked only behind Golovkin. In a nation with many amateur champions who oftentimes struggle to make the leap into the pro ranks, the boxing squared circle is particularly tight.

“I am certainly a fan of GGG, I was in camp with him when we were amateurs. On BoxRec I am rated second behind him in Kazakhstan,” said Eyubov. “He is a great fighter, I am seven years younger and will carry the knockout torch. I am honored to follow in the Golovkin path. He set the stage for us, a great fighter!”

Perhaps summing up the emotions of a nation, Niyazov concluded, “Whenever he fights, I feel like the whole country of Kazakhstan and everyone with ties to that country is in his corner. GGG is at a level right now where everyone is looking up to him, he carries a whole country on his back. When he wins, I win. We all win.”

“With Golovkin and Wladimir Klitschko dominating boxing right now, many of the fighters in our Brooklyn Brawl series are trying to follow in their footsteps. Dimash and Bakhtiyar are no exceptions,” said boxing champion-turned-promoter Dmitriy Salita. “Many Brooklyn Brawl participants are from former Soviet countries and made their homes in New York City to make a name for themselves in the world center for professional boxing.”

On Thursday, Oct. 29, the Aviator Sports and Events Center in South Brooklyn will serve as the proving ground for many New York City-based rising stars. Niyazov will have his mettle tested once again after improving his record with a six-round Aug. 25Boxing At The Beach unanimous decision victory over local fighter Ariel “Fuego” Duran in a Brooklyn-Queens crosstown rivalry bout.

TUREANO JOHNSON WANTS BIG NAMES AT 160 EYES GGG  & COTTO

NEW JERSEY (June 15, 2015)Gary Shaw Productions’ middleweight contender, Tureano Johnson (18-1, 13 KOs), is looking for the biggest fights in the division. Currently rated WBC #2,WBA #3, IBF #8 and WBO #13, Johnson is riding a 4-fight winning streak with the hopes of landing a world title shot.

Tureano’s only blemish is a controversial TKO loss to Curtis Stevens in which he was winning on all scorecards before the referee stopped the bout in the final round.
“I want all the champions in the middleweight division.” said Tureano Johnson, “GGG, Cotto, bring them on. Both guys are looking for opponents and I’m right here waiting. I’m highly ranked across the board so there’s no reason why these fights can’t be made. I see flaws in both fighters that I know I can exploit. My promoter Gary Shaw is working hard to get me a big fight and I’m confident I’ll be back in the ring against a top level fighter soon.

“Tureano Johnson is willing to get in the ring with any of the current champions,” Gary Shaw said, “GGG and Cotto hold world titles and both of them need an opponent. Johnson has made it loud and clear that he wants to fight either one of them. I will do my best to get him in the ring with either guy as he is deserving of a world title opportunity.”
