BOUTS WILL STREAM LIVE ON UFC FIGHT PASS® THIS THURSDAY NIGHT FROM CASINO DEL SOL IN TUCSON, ARIZONA AG 10 P.m. E.T. / 7 P.m. P.T.
TUCSON, Arizona (Bealtaine 22, 2019) – Tunisia native and mother of two,Ikram Kerwat, headlines this Thursday evening for her first time in the initial female main event streamed on RJJ Boxing on UFC FIGHT PASS®, ag tosú ag 10 p.m. AGUS / 7 p.m. PT, live from Casino Del Sol’s outdoor AVA Amphitheater in Tucson, Arizona.
Kerwat (9-1, 5 Kos), fighting out of Frankfurt, An Ghearmáin, throws-down with 9-time world title challengerSimone DaSilva (15-12, 6 Kos), na Brasaíle, in the 10-round main event for the vacant World Boxing Council (WBC) female super featherweight championship.
Kerwat vs. DaSilvais presented by Roy Jones Jr. (RJJ) Boxing Promotions and Kerwat is trained by living legend and 10-time world championRoy Jones, Jr.
“Ikram is an exciting fighter with awesome power and good hand speed,” Jones evaluated his protege. “She’s always looking to improve, and I look forward to her next voyage towards a world title.”
The 35-year-old Kerwat is a former WBC International female lightweight champion, who will be fighting in the United States for the fourth time as a pro boxer. “Fighting in the U.S. was always one of my biggest dreams,” she commented. “It’s amazing. I already have a fanbase and they are really awesome. I like the enthusiasm and positive energy of U.S. daoine.
“This is my first main event and I can’t wait to step into the ring. To be live streamed on UFC FIGHT PASS is very important to me, my fans and, ar ndóigh, mo theaghlach. My last fight was also live streamed on FIGHT PASS and it was amazing. I’m happy and thankful for that.
“I want to give a big shout out to my family and my coach and promoter, Roy Jones, Jr, his wonderful wife, Natlyn Jones, agus, ar ndóigh, the RJJ Promotions team for this opportunity and their kindness.” (L-R) Ikram Kerwat & Roy Jones, Jr.
A pro ó 2015, Kerwat first met Jones at the WBC Convention three years ago in Miami. “It’s an honor for me to lean from a legendary boxer like Roy,” she added. “He’s a boxing guru! Before I met Roy, I was a brawler, more of an aggressive fighter. Anois, I’d say I learned to skillfully box. I’ve made a lot of improvements and I developed more, boxing-wise. I grew mentally, which is the most important part in boxing and life.”
Da Silva may have fought in nine world titles fights, but Ikram doesn’t feel that she’s at a disadvantage because of her opponent’s edge in quality experience. “My opponent is experienced, but this means nothing to me,” she remarked. “I fear nobody, but I respect all boxers who step in the ring. I do not underestimate anyone, nothing more, and nothing less. I don’t look at her, I look at myself. This is only thing I have control over. I do my job, live my dream, and I have fun doing it. I enjoy every single minute of it. This next step is very important for us. Every single fight brings me a step closer to my goal, which means that every single fight is significant for my career. Fights like this even more so.”
Although she had only three amateur matches, including a gold medal performance in the Berlin Championships and taking bronze in the German Championships, Ikram is positioning herself for a world title fight in the not too distant future, assuming she gets past Da Silva.
“I trained myself (mar amaitéarach) and that wasn’t easy for me, because I really wasn’t a trainer, but I wanted it so bad and now even more,” Kerwat concluded. “I have two kids and I used to say boxing is my third child. And it’s the oldest. I protest and love it, making sure that I progress and develop, getting better and better.”

BROOKLYN (Bealtaine 19, 2019) – WBC trom Domhanda Champion Deontay “An Bomber Chré-” Wilderdelivered the 40úknockout of his career in devastating fashion Saturday night, sending mandatory challengerDominic “Trioblóid” BREAZEALEflat on his back with a trademark right hand in front of a raucous crowd at Barclays Center, baile BROOKLYN BoxING™, in imeacht curtha i láthair ag Premier Boxing Champions. Successfully defending his belt for the ninth time, Wilder joins illustrious company alongside Hall of Famers Joe Louis, Muhammad Ali, Mike Tyson and more and becomes the 10th fighter in history to make nine or more consecutive successful heavyweight title defenses. Watch HERE: https://s.sho.com/2Hp0AEh
In the buildup to tonight’s world championship bout, Wilder (41-0-1, 40 Kos) repeatedly promised that the fight would not last long. The towering Tuscaloosa, Ala. native kept his word, scoring the 20úfirst round knockout of his career and his 15úknockdown as heavyweight world champion. BREAZEALE (20-2, 18 Kos) was able to withstand Wilder’s first early onslaught, but could not beat referee Harvey Dock’s 10-count when Wilder connected flush with the most dangerous right hand in boxing later in the opening round.
“Everything just came out of me tonight”, Said Wilder. “I know it’s been a big buildup, there’s been a lot of animosity and a lot of words that were said and it just came out of me tonight. That’s what makes boxing so great.
“I just told Breazeale I love him and of course I want to see him go home to his family. I know we say some things, but when you can fight a man and then you can hug him and kiss him, I wish the world was like that. We shake hands and we live to see another day and that’s what it’s all about.”
As the attention of the heavyweight division turns to what’s next, Wilder insists that a fight with Tyson Fury, the only man he has faced and not defeated, or Anthony Joshua remains on the table and in the works.
“I understand what Fury did,” Said Wilder. “When you get dropped on the canvas like that I understand you have to get yourself back together. But the rematch will happen, like all these other fights will happen. The great thing is all these fights rare in discussion. The big fights will happen. I just want you to have patience.”
BREAZEALE, whose only two defeats have now come against both Wilder and Joshua, was disappointed he wasn’t allowed to continue the fight.
“I think the ref stopped it a little early because I could hear him saying seven and eight, but that’s boxing,” Said BREAZEALE. “He did his job and kept us safe for our next fight.
“I got on my feet and had my legs under me. It’s the heavyweight division so there’s going to big shots from guys with power. This was a situation where he landed the big right hand before I did. I thought I was going to come on in the later rounds. I’ll be back and go for the heavyweight title again.”
Sa an comh-gné, WBC featherweight Domhanda Champion Gary Russell Jr. (30-1, 18 Kos) put on yet another professional display to defend his belt for the fourth time against a valiantKiko Martinez (39-9-2, 28 Kos). Due to a gash that opened up over Martinez’s left eye, referee Ricky Gonzalez stopped the fight in the fifth round upon the advice of the ringside physician, resulting in a technical knockout.
Russell, who was fighting for the first time in a year, showed no signs of ring rust and displayed his full skillset including his trademark lightning quick hands. The 30-year-old Capitol Heights, Md. native was dominant from the opening bell and landed on a remarkable 40% de chuid punches chumhacht. In an all-action fight with little downtime, Martinez did more than enough to play his part. The Spaniard constantly came forward but Russell continued to target the cut that opened up over his eye after a right hook in the second round. The ringside official called for the stoppage of the fight at 2:52 of round number five.
“I did pretty good,” Dúirt an 2008 U.S. Olympian Russell to SHOWTIME ringside reporter Jim Gray. “We stayed behind the jab and he couldn’t get past it. We knew that intellect over athleticism would get it done.
“We want [WBA featherweight Champion] Leo Santa Cruz,” Russell continued while wearing a shirt that read ‘Leo Next’. “We want to make this fight happen. The fire is all the way hot on this side of the field. You will get burned. I would love for that fight to happen this year. Let’s make it happen.”
“It was a good stoppage for a very tough fight,” said the former world champion Martinez. “I’m definitely a visual fighter so the cut made it tough. Gary was in great physical condition and it was a very hard fight.
“I’m going to rest a little bit now, but I’ll be back. I thought I had some good moments and had a good division. I think I’ll drop back down to 122-pounds to win a world title there.”
Sa oscailteoir teileachraolta, ionchas undefeated Juan Heraldez (16-0-1, 10 Kos) agus iar curadh domhanda Argenis Mendez (25-5-2, 12 Kos) fought to a highly competitive majority draw. Two judges scored the fight 95-95, while a third had Mendez winning 97-93.
Fighting in front of his mentor Floyd Mayweather, Las Vegas’ Heraldez controlled many of the early rounds by setting the pace and establishing his jab. Heraldez outlanded Mendez 126-108 in total punches and 70-30 in jabs throughout the 10 babhtaí. Falling behind early, Mendez, a seasoned veteran and 2004 Dominican Republic Olympian, used his experience to grow back into the fight. The tempo picked up in the fifth round, as both fighters landed several heavy blows but the momentum shifted towards Mendez. The 32-year-old Mendez, who has fought seven current or former champions, closed out the fight exceptionally strong, winning the final round on all three judges’ scórchártaí. Sin é a dhéanamh, Mendez would have lost the fight.
“Shíl mé gur bhuaigh mé an troid,” said a disappointed Mendez. “He didn’t do anything to me. How did he win the fight? If I have to prove I beat him in a rematch, I’ll be ready. I won’t leave it up to the judges.
“My speed and my power made it difficult for him. I thought my counterpunching was really good. He tired toward the later rounds and that let me get a little closer to him to get my offense going.”
Mar an gcéanna, Heraldez thought he did enough to win the fight which he viewed as a potential coming out party.
“I thought I won a close decision,” Heraldez said. “I didn’t think it was a draw. He didn’t do anything that hurt me at any point.
“He wasn’t really engaging with me. He was just trying to move around and pick his shots, but it wasn’t anything I wasn’t ready for. I’ll either take the rematch with Mendez or move forward toward my goal of a world title.”
Preceding the telecast, SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING COUNTDOWN featured three undercard attractions streamed live on the SHOWTIME Sports social platforms. A battle between heavyweightsRobert Alfonso (18-0-1, 8 Kos) agus Iago Kiladze (26-4-1, 18 Kos) ended in a split-draw after eight rounds of action. While one judge scored the fight 77-75 for Alfonso, another had it 77-75 do Kiladze, with the third judge scoring it 76-76, resulting in the draw.
Also entering the ring was 2016 U.S. Cluichí Oilimpeacha Gary Antuanne Russell (9-0, 9 Kos), the younger brother of the featherweight champion Gary Russell Jr., a thitMarcos Mojica(16-4-2, 12 Kos) twice to earn a stoppage 2:13 isteach sa tríú babhta. Rounding out the action was Brooklyn-native and 2016 Haitian sna Cluichí Oilimpeacha Richardson Hitchins (9-0, 5 Kos), who scored a TKO ofAlejandro Munera(4-2-3, 4 Kos) after Munera was knocked down in round three and unable to continue despite making it to the final bell of the round.

Seo an méid a bhí le rá ag rannpháirtithe na preasagallamh Déardaoin ó Ionad Barclays:
DEONTAY WILDER
“Téann na trodaithe seo i gcruth iontach i gcónaí agus ceapann siad go bhfuil an plean cluiche acu chun mé a bhualadh. Ceapann siad go bhfuil siad chun mé a ghabháil. Níl sé ag dul a bheith ag obair. Ní dhéanfaidh aon ní a d'ullmhaigh an fear seo dó dul ag obair.
“Tá súil agam go dtabharfaidh sé a chuid is fearr is féidir leis. Níl i gceist anseo ach cluiche dornálaíochta. Táim paiseanta faoin rud a dhéanaim. Tá sé seo le fada ag teacht dom féin agus do Dominic. D'iarr sé seo, agus gheobhaidh sé.
“Oíche iontach a bheidh ann domsa, agus oíche bhrónach dó. Is mór an fhreagracht é bheith ina laoch trom. Ní dhéantar gach duine a bheith ina chraobh. Tá sé níos mó ná a bheith glamorous nó iompar timpeall an crios mór le rá.
“Tá traenáil níos deacra agam ná mar a d’oiligh mé riamh. Spreag sé mé mar a bhí mé i gcoinne Bermane Stiverne. Ba mhaith liom a ghortú Breazeale chomh dona. Coinneoidh mé mo shuaimhneas go dtí go dtiocfaidh an t-am sin oíche Shathairn.
“Ní chreidim Breazeale nuair a labhraíonn sé. Tá mé sa chluiche seo le fada an lá. Níl duine éigin cosúil leis chun mé a bhualadh. Is é an rud is gaire dó chun an crios seo a bhaint amach ina aisling.
“Tá an fhoireann ar fad liom ón gcéad lá. Thosaigh muid le chéile agus táimid chun dul an bealach ar fad le chéile. Rith iontach a bhí ann domsa. Thosaigh mé mo ghairm bheatha ag an mbun agus d'oibrigh an bealach ar fad go dtí an pointe seo.
“Ní rushed muid rud ar bith. Fiú sna Cluichí Oilimpeacha, Bhí mé fós ag foghlaim sa phost. Thraenáil muid le bheith i do churadh fadtéarmach, ní curadh gearrthéarmach, agus bhaineamar é sin amach. Táim buíoch as chomh fada agus a tháinig mé agus as gach rud a tháinig leis. Íocann obair chrua as.
“Beidh mo ghníomhartha ag labhairt níos airde ná mo bhriathra. Tá mé an chuid is fearr. Is mise an duine roghnaithe. Is féidir sé a rá cad ba mhaith aige. Is troid iontach a bheidh ann chomh fada agus a mhairfidh sé. Tá mé chun an pian a thabhairt. Oíche Dé Sathairn, tá gach duine i do chóireáil.”
DOMINIC BREAZEALE
“Tá mé ar bís Super chun troid. Bhí campa iontach ag Virgil Hunter agus mé féin. Bhí sé ar cheann de na cinn is fearr de mo shaol. Tá mé dírithe ar mheabhrach agus ceart go fisiciúil.
“Tá sceitimíní orm a bheith ar ais agus bua eile a fháil. Is é gach rud domsa an crios WBC sin a fháil. Is é seo mo Super Bowl.
“Is é bua dom Dé Sathairn gach rud. Níl a fhios ag Wilder cad atá á dhéanamh aige féin. Tá sé ag troid. Is fearr a bheith muiníneach as a chumas, mar gheall ar oíche Dé Sathairn, beidh sé sa troid is deacra dá shaol.
“Tá mé chun Deontay a bhualadh chomh dona sin nach mbeidh sé ag iarraidh go deo na lámhainní a lású arís. Tá spóirt 80% meabhrach. Nuair a bheidh mé críochnaithe leis, tá an ghné mheabhrach chun a bheith buailte amach as dó.
“Táim chun léiriú pléascach eile a chur ar siúl. Tá mé ag brionglóid le bliain anuas faoi éisteacht ‘agus an nua.’ Is rud álainn é agus ní féidir liom fanacht chun é a bhaint amach agus mo lámh a ardú.
“Níor fhorbair Wilder ar chor ar bith le linn a ghairm bheatha. Breathnaíonn sé mar an gcéanna leis an amaitéarach. Caithfidh sé é féin a labhairt le go mothaíonn sé muiníneach.
“Tá mé ró-mheabhrach ó thaobh meabhrach le bheith dírithe ar an méid a deir duine éigin. Nuair a théim i gcomhrac ní bhíonn imní orm faoi cad is féidir le mo chéile comhraic a dhéanamh, ach faoi cad ba mhaith liom a dhéanamh agus conas is féidir liom a fhorghníomhú.
“Ní chuireann aon cheann d’fhocail Deontay isteach orm ar chor ar bith. Leanfaidh sé ag tafann agus beidh mé ag fanacht. Tá mé chun é a chur ina thost oíche Shathairn.”
GARY RUSSELL JR.
“Tá ocras orm agus táim réidh. Tá duine ar bith a bhfuilim sa bhfáinne leis ag seasamh sa bhealach ar mo chuid spriocanna. Aon duine ag iarraidh stop a chur orm, i riocht contúirteach.
“Táimid chun iarracht a dhéanamh luas an troid le mo jab a rialú. Ní dóigh liom go n-éireoidh sé thar an jab. Tá sé chun iarracht a dhéanamh a bheith garbh agus fisiciúil. Is é an plean atá agam ná na coigeartuithe a theastaíonn uaim a dhéanamh chun an bua seo a fháil.
“Is caidreamh teaghlaigh é i gcónaí leis na Russells. Bogaimid mar aonad agus déanaimid barr feabhais mar aonad. Is é mo theaghlach an áit a dtarraingím mo chuid fuinnimh ar fad. Ní haon seachrán é riamh. Tugann siad dom an breosla a theastaíonn uaim.
“Sa dornálaíocht ní mór duit muinín agus creideamh iomlán a bheith agat i do chóiste. Níorbh fhéidir liom feisteas níos fearr a shamhlú ná m’athair a bheith agam. Fiú má thugann sé treoracha b’fhéidir nach mbeadh 100% ceart i mo shúile, Tá a fhios agam go mbeidh sé ar an rud is fearr liom.
“Níl aon duine sa rannán seo ag iarraidh dul isteach sa bhfáinne liom. Tá a fhios acu an luas agus an chumhacht agus na cumais a thugann mé gach uair a chéim mé isteach an fáinne.
“Bhí Deontay agus mé féin ar an bhfoireann Oilimpeach céanna, móide Dominic agus mo dheartháir beag Gary Antuanne Russell bhí SAM freisin. Oilimpigh. Déanann sé cárta iontach oíche Dé Sathairn.”
MÁIRTÍNÍ KIKO
“Tagaim chun troid agus gheobhaidh mé an teideal sin. Bhí campa traenála an-réidh agam agus mothaím 100 faoin gcéad go fisiciúil.
“Sílim go bhfuil mo thaithí níos fearr. Ceapann sé nach bhfuil ionam ach brú-throdaire, ach ní fhaca sé mé sa bhosca ar an mbealach a rachaidh mé a bhosca Dé Sathairn.
“Seo an deis is mó de mo shaol. Chun a bheith ar an ardán agus a bheith in ann troid ar son na craobhchomórtais an-speisialta. Táim chun an leas is fearr a bhaint as.
“Tá súil agam nach nglacann Russell go héadrom mé mar tá neart cumais fágtha agam. Is troid iontach a bheidh ann chomh fada agus a mhairfidh sé.”
JUAN HERALDEZ
“D’éirigh go hiontach leis an gCampa agus ní féidir liom fanacht le seó a chur ar siúl. Tá mé chun a chur in iúl do gach duine sa rannóg seo go bhfuil mé ag teacht ar a son. Táim chun an nóiméad a thapú agus lántairbhe a bhaint aisti.
“Mothaím láidir agus táim réidh le troid. Nílim ach ag comhaireamh síos na miontuairiscí go dtí gur féidir liom céim isteach sa bhfáinne. Tá sé an-spraoi agus tá mé chun é a ligean amach Dé Sathairn.
“Tá sé ar intinn agam buachan ar bhealach iontach Dé Sathairn. Tá mé chun a thaispeáint do gach duine gur imreoir mé ar 140-punt agus táim réidh do dhuine ar bith is féidir leo a chur os mo chomhair.
“Níl sé beartaithe agam bualadh isteach. Tá mé ag dul amach sa bhosca dó agus bata agus bogadh. Ní bheidh sé in ann teagmháil a dhéanamh liom. Má thagann an deis le haghaidh knockout, Tógfaidh mé é.”
Argenis Mendez
“Tá mé an-tógtha le haghaidh an deis seo. Bhí campa traenála iontach agam agus oíche Dé Sathairn beidh tú chun seó a fheiceáil ag Ionad Barclays.
“Is breá liom an dornálaíocht agus is breá liom an deis seo a bhíonn agam oíche Dé Sathairn. Taispeánfaidh mé mo paisean don spórt le linn an troid seo. Mothaím go hiontach go fisiciúil agus ní féidir liom fanacht le dul isteach ar an bhfáinne.
“Osclaíonn bua oíche Dé Sathairn an doras dom. Tá daoine chun tosú ag féachaint orm mar cheann de na trodaithe is fearr ón Phoblacht Dhoiminiceach.
“Tá sé ag dul a bheith ina troid maith. Tá an luas agus na scileanna agam chun é a chur amach sa bhosca. Is trodaithe an-chliste sinn beirt. Creidim gur mise an trodaire is fearr agus léireoidh sé oíche Shathairn.”
STEPHEN Espinoza, Uachtarán Cláir Spóirt agus Imeachtaí, Líonraí Showtime Inc.
“Tá an rannán trommheáchain spreagúil arís agus baineann go leor de sin le Deontay Wilder. Chabhraigh SHOWTIME leis chomh maith agus ár dtiomantas don rannán. Níl aon líonra eile níos tiomanta nó níos mó infheistíochta sna meáchain throma ná mar a rinne SHOWTIME agus táimid bródúil as sin.
“Táimid bródúil freisin gur throid go leor de na trodaithe ar an gcárta seo go minic ar SHOWTIME. Déanfaidh Deontay a chuid 12ú cuma agus déanfaidh Gary a 11ú háit. Wilder, Sheol Russell agus Dominic a ngairmeacha beatha ar ShoBox, cosúil le go leor trodaithe iontach eile.
“Nuair a fhaigheann tú beirt guys le chéile le haghaidh cluiche grudge súil leis le fada, níl a lán le rá. Is é Deontay an curaidh trom-mheáchain is faide atá ag réimsiú sa spórt. Bheadh sé seo ar an naoú cosaint dó, rud é nach ndearna ach naoi gcinn de thrommheáchan eile i stair na dornálaíochta.
“Bhí dhá cheann de na troideanna trommheáchain is bisiúla ag Deonay le déanaí anuraidh. Maidir le Dominic, is fear mór le taithí láidir é atá ar stáitse an domhain roimhe seo. Throid sé ar son teideal domhanda agus tá sé ag éirí as trí bhua as a chéile. Tá neart cumhachta aige agus chonaiceamar sa troid dheireanach a rinne sé i gcoinne Carlos Negron gur féidir leis an troid a athrú in aon phunc amháin.”
BRETT YORMARK, POF BSE Global
“Is í an rannán trom-mheáchain caint an domhain spóirt le míonna anuas, agus tá sé oiriúnach go gcosnóidh curaidh an domhain a theideal anseo i mBrooklyn i gceann de na troideanna is mó sa spórt i mbliana.
“Deontay, Tá sé ráite agam le fada an lá gurb é seo do theach as baile agus ní féidir linn fanacht go mbeidh tú ar ais. Tá comhraic mór agat an tseachtain seo i Dominic Breazeale. Dominic tá dhá thaispeántas agat cheana féin inár bhfáinne agus tá a fhios againn go bhfuil an lucht leanúna ag tnúth le seó iontach eile.”

WORCESTER, MASS (Bealtaine 16, 2019) – Trí-am, dhá-roinn curadh domhanda “An Gallo” Jose Antonio Rivera is dedicating his 50ú troid pro, the last in his hometown of Worcester, to the Boys & Girls Club in Worcester, Massachusetts. A portion of the proceeds from “Quest For 50,” presented by Shearns Boxing Promotions (SBP) and Rivera Promotions Entertainment, will benefit the Boys & Girls Club.
The 46-year-old Rivera (42-6-1, 25 Kos) faces former WFC championTravis “Sweet Feet” Scott (19-5, 5 Kos), of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, in the eight-round main event at The Palladium in Worcester.
Rivera, a full-time court officer in Worcester, has had a special relationship for more than 30 years with the Worcester Boys & Girls Club and its director of boxing, Carlos Garcia, atá “The Godfather of Worcester Boxing.”
Rivera moved to Worcester from Springfield 30 years ago at the age of 16 to pursue a boxing career, which included being coached by Garcia. Rivera had siblings and other relatives living in Worcester and after living with an aunt for a month, Jose moved into an apartment with another boxer, four-time national amateur championBobby Harris.
“The Worcester Boys & Girls Club helped me stay off the streets so I could focus on my dream of becoming world champion,” Rivera remembered. “It was a place for me and so many others to go and be safe. Kids, not just boxers, can be kids there, where they don’t have to worry about what’s happening in the streets.
“Carlos has played a tremendous part of my life and so many others, influencing us not only to become good boxers, but to be good people in the community. That was always so important to him and he emphasized being a good person. Rinne mé mo dhícheall. He was always fair across the board and gave us all opportunities. He took a liking to me and brags that he never had to throw me out of the Boys & Girls Club. I graduated from high school and went after my dream in 1992 when I turned pro. Carlos is big in amateur boxing, but not so much with pros, because he doesn’t have the time to train pros. I made sure that when turned pro, tough, that he was part of my team. And he’s still a big part of my team and life.”
The number of Worcester youths Garcia has had a positive effect on, life-changing in many respects, is countless. One of those many people is Jose’s longtime friend and his current head trainer, Sean Fitzgerald, who retired as a boxer in 2001 le 29-2-2 taifead pro. “Fitzy” remembers the fir time he read the sign over the door in the gym at the Boys & Girls Club: “Better to seat than bleed.”
Fitzy lived with his father when his parents divorced and at the age of 10, his father sent him to the Boys & Girls Club to attend an after-school program. “Fitzy” said he had to earn his way into Garcia’s good graces.
“Carlos didn’t talk to me for the first 5-6 seachtaine,” Fitzgerald explained. “Ansin, he put me in the ring as a sparring partner, and I was badly beaten. I had a bloody nose and black eye, but the next day I came back, and the rest is history. Carlos was a great mentor, rough at times, but always there for you. I remember seeing the boxing team jackets. It intrigued me. When I got my jacket and started wearing it, I got respect from everybody, and then I knew that I belonged. I learned a lot about life at the Boys & Girls Club, being with there with people from different generations and cultures. I met many friends there who I never would have met.
“The Boys & Girls Club is safe. I was from a tough area in Worcester. My father worked and it was easy to get in trouble with no supervision. Carlos stayed on top of me to graduate from school and if I was home sick, he come buy with chicken soup to make sure I was alright. My father was in my life big-time, but I joke that I had two moms growing up, my father and Carlos. Going to the Boys & Girls Club was something to look forward to every day.
“Carlos always taught us to never make the mistakes he did in life. He wanted us to go to school, stay out of trouble, and be a good person. He’s helped so many people over the years. Look around Worcester and you’ll see them: police and court officers, fire fighters, and so many others. The Boys & Girls Club was a great experience for me and so many other kids from Worcester.”
(L-R) – Ray Semidei, Carlos Garcia and Jose Antonio Rivera
Garcia has been the director of boxing at the Worcester Boys & Girls Club since 1982. Two year ago, Garcia was inductred into the National Golden Gloves Hall of Fame.
“Never in his life has Jose even raised his voice to me,” Garcia commented. “He treats me like his father and he’s like one of my sons. There aren’t not too many guys like him and he’s so well respected in the community. He came to Worcester from Springfield to train with ne and stayed with me. Jose helps everyone and now he’s promoting to help local boxers.
“We’re at the Boys & Girls Club to and that’s the way it really is here. It’s so good to see so many in this community who’ve gone through our boxing program and are good people, good husbands, good parents. It makes me feel so proud. ‘Fitzy’ was a hyper kid. He’s a real gentleman who now does so much for kids here. I’ve never had a signed contract with any of the pro boxers I’ve worked with because I trust them.”

FAIRFAX, VA. (Bealtaine 11, 2019) - Julian “J-Rock’’ Williamsknew he was walking into the lion’s den when he traveled from Philadelphia to Virginia to face undefeated unified super welterweight champion “Swift” Jarrett Hurd in his backyard. But Williams (27-1-1, 16 Kos) wasn’t afraid.
He came. He saw and he conquered Hurd (23-1, 16 Kos), scoring a 12-round unanimous decision, handing Hurd his first loss and taking the IBF, WBA and IBO championships before a hometown crowd at the EagleBank Arena on the campus of George Mason University.
The crowd and the primetime audience, which tuned in to FOX and FOX Deportes, witnessed a valiant performance from both Williams and Hurd in what will certainly be a “Fight of the Year’’ candidate. The judges had Williams handily defeating Hurd with scores of 116-111 agus 115-112 faoi dhó.
Williams had come up short in his previous attempt at a world title when he was stopped on via TKO by Jermall Charlo in 2016. He was overwhelmed by emotions after his upset victory over Hurd, who was a presumptive favorite over the 29-year-old Williams.
“I am just overwhelmed. This is such a great feeling. I outclassed him. I am one of the best fighters in the world,"A dúirt Williams. “Maybe I wasn’t ready for the title the first time I got the shot. I took the loss. I took it like a man and the whole world doubted me. I went into this fight a five to one underdog.’’
“Tá sé seo ina bhrionglóid fíor. I have been waiting for this for years. I never ditched the gym. I never got into girls or left the gym. I am from the streets, but I was never in the streets. I was in the gym practicing my craft.
“The only people that believed in me were my team, but all I can say is ‘and the new’!”
Hurd is often a slow starter and Williams made him pay for that. He jumped on the defending champion right out of the gate, throwing crisp punches behind a pistol-like jab. Williams dropped Hurd in the second round with a shot to the temple.
“It didn’t really change my strategy. It was just a flash knockdown. It caught me by surprise. I wasn’t really hurt,’’ Hurd said.
Sensing he had stunned Hurd, Williams came out firing in the next round. He picked up the pace and Hurd decided to match the ferocity of the attack rather than wither under it. Midway through the third round, Hurd landed a blistering left uppercut that snapped Williams’ head upward and slowly started to regain his form.
Hurd and Williams went to the trenches in the middle rounds, closing the distance and fighting in tight quarters. Conventional wisdom would seem to favor Hurd in that space, because he is physically bigger than Williams. But Williams did more than hold his own.
By the seventh round, the fight had become a war of attrition and a test of wills. Hurd was cut over his left eye in the eighth round. By then, Williams was completely in control.
Williams said he was well prepared for everything that Hurd threw at him, but it was by no means a cakewalk.
“He wasn’t easier to hit than I thought. He was crafty and he had heavy hands. I just stayed poised. I listened to my coach and I just worked,’’ Williams said. “He couldn’t hurt me. I saw everything he was throwing. I knocked him down. The game plan was to win however I could. I adapted on the fly. We knew he had certain tendencies and worked on his tendencies. ''
Hurd said he didn’t feel like himself in the fight against Williams. Fighting in front of a raucous hometown crowd filled with family and friends as he hails from nearby Accokeek, Md.
“I wasn’t able to get off. I can’t really call it right now. I have to go back and watch. I was loading up on my shots instead of just letting my hands go,’’ Hurd said. “J-Rock was just the better man tonight. There’s definitely a rematch clause in our contract and I’m going to go for it. I’m going to come back better than I was tonight.’’
Super lightweight sensation Mario Barrios (24-0, 15 Kos) scored a devastating second round knockout victory over Juan Jose Velasco (20-2, 12 Kos) i comh-gné. Barrios of San Antonio, Texas kept his undefeated record intact when he landed a crushing body shot that sent Velasco to the canvas midway through the second round. Referee Hugo Spinola counted out Velasco at 1:16 of the second round as the Argentine was on his hands and knees trying to catch his breath.
Barrios said he was trying to be patient and use his jab to set up the perfect shot.
“I saw him opening up every time he would step in. I knew one of the body shots was going to do it and I found the sweet spot,’’ Barrios said. “We weren’t expecting it to end that quickly. I wasn’t predicting a knock out, but I knew I had the power to do it and stop him.”
“I was very confident. I had a great camp. I can’t thank Virgil Hunter and the team for the preparation for this fight. We knew he was vulnerable with body punches and that was something I work on regardless. It is one of my favorite shots. I have been working on it since the amateurs.”
Barrios said he would build on the victory over Velasco and continue to climb the ladder at 140 punt.
“I want a world title shot. I am always in the gym. I am always ready. I want all the smoke at 140. I want any of the champions. And I’m ready to bring a big fight to all my hometown fans in San Antonio.’’
In the opening television bout middleweight contenders Matt Korobov of Orotukan, Russia and Immanuwel Aleem of East Meadow, N.Y.. stalked each other for 10 babhtaí. They took turns pressing the action and playing the aggressor, dishing out and absorbing the best that each had to offer. In the end Korobov (29-2, 14 Kos) and Aleem (18-2-1, 11 Kos) had fought to a majority draw. One judge had Korobov winning 97-93 and two judges scored it 95-95.
In the sixth round Korobov landed a combination that rocked Aleem and had him in trouble momentarily. But Aleem weathered the storm. Aleem came out strong in the ninth round, practically running across the ring to meet Korobov, who had slowly raised his 36-year-old body off the corner stool at the last second. Sensing the close nature of the fight, both Korobov and Aleem unloaded and landed some heavy shots seeking to keep the outcome away from the judges’ scorecards.
Aleem said he thought he won the fight.
“I didn’t feel like he was doing enough. I was trying to use my range. He was just touching me. I realized when I started hitting him that he didnt have the gas.,’’ Aleem said. “I am faster than people think. I see open shots better than people expect. I made a statement tonight and I want to keep making statements.”
Korobov , who lost a unanimous decision to Jermall Charlo in his last fight, said he felt sluggish during the match against Aleem.
“I felt heavy and not totally sharp enough. It was hard to react and stop him from going inside. I have things to work on.,’’ Korobov said. “He was tougher than I expected. He wasn’t as strong as Charlo, but he is a really good fighter. He kept coming forward. He wasn’t afraid. He just kept throwing punches.”
