DON KING SIGNS CONGO’S MAKABU; WORLD’S GREATEST BOXING PROMOTER SETS SIGHTS ON FIVE CHAMPIONSHIP BOUTS IN THE CONGO

Platja Deerfield, Florida (Setembre 30, 2019)—The world’s greatest boxing promoter, Don King, may soon be returning to the Democratic Republic of the Congo, formerly known as Zaire.



King signed the Congo’s Ilunga Makabu (26-2), who is the WBC’s number one contender for the vacant cruiserweight championship.



“I have traveled from France, and Makabu from the Congo, to meet here in Florida with Don King,” said co-manager Tarik Saadi. “I have matched the greatest fighter in the world with the greatest promoter in the world and today, junts, we sign for the future of Junior Makabu.”



“I am thrilled at the opportunity to help Ilunga Makabu become a world champion,", va dir King. “He’s a very talented fighter, who is most deserving of a shot at the WBC belt and we will do everything to make his championship dream come true.

Makabu has won seven consecutive fights, the last coming Aug. 24, when he earned a majority decision against Aleksei Papin to retain his WBC Silver Cruiserweight title. LOS ANGELES (Setembre 29, 2019) – Errol “La Veritat” Spence Jr. (26-0, 21 KOs) unified the IBF and WBC Welterweight World Titles Saturday night against two-time champion “Temps De La Funció” Shawn Porter (30-3-1,17 KOs) in an action packed main event of a FOX Sports PBC Pay-Per-View from STAPLES Center in Los Angeles.

“It feels good to win,” va dir Spence. “This is a lifetime dream. It shows hard work pays off. Thanks Shawn Porter, my whole team and all my Texas people for coming out.”

The back and forth brawl immediately garnered well-deserved Fight of the Year conversation as the two welterweight champions traded power punches from the opening bell to the end. Porter showed his trademark aggressive style throughout the action, smothering Spence while throwing his own power punches.

“Shawn Porter is a rough and awkward fighter,” va dir Spence. “I didn’t get off what I wanted to. He’s a true champion. He made it tough.”

That left it up to Spence to weather the oncoming storm and find spots to land power punches of his own. Segons Compubox, Spence landed 44% dels seus cops de poder, a 25% from Porter.

Spence landed one of the decisive blows of the bout in round 11, connecting flush with that sweeping left hook and scoring a knockdown when Porter’s knee and glove hit the canvas. As expected, Porter rebounded strong, going at Spence and putting him on the back foot for most of the remainder of the round.

“I think that knockdown was the difference,” va dir Porter. “I couldn’t come back to the corner with my head down after that.”

The final round was more of the same, with both fighters going toe-to-toe and leaving the STAPLES Center crowd on their feet and roaring until the final bell. The final punch stats saw both men throw nearly an equal number of punches, with Spence edging Porter 745 a 744 in punches thrown and 221 a 172 in punches landed.

“All my punches have bad intentions,” va dir Spence. “By boxing Mikey Garcia, I wanted to show people I could do it with that style. Porter was throwing a lot. I wanted to show I was the bigger and stronger welterweight.”

Després 12 rounds the close nature of the fight yielded a split decision from the judges. One judge saw the fight 115-112 for Porter, overruled by two judges who saw it 116-111 per a Spence. The pay-per-view co-main event saw unbeaten David “El Bandera Roja” Benavidez(22-0, 19 KOs) regain the WBC Super Middleweight World Championship from two-time champion Antonio “El gos” Dirrell (33-2-1, 24 KOs) with a ninth-round TKO victory.

“Everything just fell in place perfectly,” va dir Benavidez. “From the suspension to all the big fights I’ve been in. All of that helped me out in this fight. I did not make a mistake or open myself up more than I needed to. I worked behind my jab and got the stoppage. Things are going to get better and get tougher and I’m ready for the challenge.”

The fight followed a similar pattern throughout, with Benavidez stalking his opponent looking to unload power shots, while Dirrell circled the ring looking to counter and keep him at bay with his jab.

Benavidez stayed in control through the early rounds, until Dirrell turned the tables momentarily in round four trying to batter Benavidez against the ropes, but he was unable to daze the 22-year-old.

In round six Benavidez broke through with a critical moment in the fight, landing a punch that opened up a cut over Dirrell’s right eye. With the blood pouring, the cut was immediately a problem for Dirrell, who now had limited vision to stop the incoming assault.

“He hit me with a clean shot,” dir Dirrell. “That’s my first time ever being cut by a punch. It opened up. There was nothing I could do about it. I couldn’t see the whole fight after that. My corner did a good job on it, but I really couldn’t see.”

Despite having his cut checked by the ringside physician in rounds six, seven and eight, Dirrell was able to use his veteran savvy to stay in the fight. As the fight went to round nine Benavidez increased his offense, slowing Dirrell down enough where he could tee off with power punches in the corner.

As Dirrell tried to navigate away from Benavidez’s offense, he began to take take more punishment and looked shaky on his feet. Referee Thomas Taylor officially stopped the fight 1:39 a la ronda, at the direction of Dirrell’s corner. Additional action saw undefeated Mario “Els asteques” Barris (25-0, 16 KOs) score a close unanimous decision victory over Batyr Akhmedov (7-1, 6 KOs) to capture the WBA Super Lightweight title in an action packed fight.

“I knew this was going to be a war,” said Barris. “He was getting dirty in there but the Mexican warrior in me was not going to let this opportunity pass me by. I dug deep and got the victory.”

The action began with Akhmedov trying to get inside against his taller opponent, while Barrios looked to move and punish Akhmedov with pot shots from the outside. “The plan was to gradually grow the activity,” said Akhmedov. “I knew that I had to win by a wide margin. After the first knockdown, I knew that I had to add activity more quickly than I had planned. So I started being more aggressive. I did everything I could to try to stop him.”

After surviving the round, Akhmedov picked up the aggression and began effectively closing the space down between his opponent. He began to land numerous clean left and right hooks that put Barrios on the defensive.

As the championship rounds neared, Barrios began to experience severe swelling in his left eye amidst the onslaught from Akhmedov. In the final round, Barrios was able to turn the tide back in his favor late in the frame. He delivered a pinpoint right hand that stunned Akhmdov and again forced him to put a glove on the mat.

After the knockdown, the fight went to the judges scores, who saw the fight 116-11, 115-11 i 114-112, tots a favor de Barris. “I promised my city of San Antonio that I would bring this title back home and I did it,” said Barris.

“We both carry power in our hands so it wasn’t a surprise someone went down,” va dir López. “It easily could have happened to me with the power he has. I was able to catch him early, find openings and get the finish.”

Lopez landed a critical blow on his first punch of the night, snapping off an overhand right that connected flush with Molina and put him on the canvas early in the first round. Lopez was patient following up and eventually landed a vicious body shot that put Molina down for the second time in the round.

Molina was able to rise to his feet and make it to the second round, and showed flashes that he might be able to change the tide of the fight. He slowed Lopez’s attack down in round two with a vicious combination of right and left hooks to the head.

“You can never take the fight out of a fighter,” va dir Molina. “I have a never say die attitude and I have my whole career. Va ser una baralla dura, but the better man won tonight.”

“I wanted to keep going at the end,” va dir Molina. “I thought I was still coherent and could still move well. But you can’t go against what the referees say.”

I’m going to give any fighter and any world champion a run for their money. I want memorable fights and I want the best.”

The main event of prelims on FS1 saw former three-time world champion Robert “El Sant” Guerrero (36-6-1, 20 KOs) earn a unanimous decision victory over Jerry Thomas (14-2-1, 8 KOs) en la seva lluita de 10 aspeses de pes welter.

In the opening prelims bout, unbeaten top prospect Joey Spencer (9-0, 7 KOs) scored a third-round stoppage of previously unbeaten Travis Gambardella (5-1-2, 2 KOs) in their super welterweight contest.

Spencer started the action early, leading with power shots while also controlling the distance between him and his opponent. A series of body shots put Gambardella down twice in the first round, although he was able to make it to the closing bell of the frame.

“The body shots weren’t really the plan going in,” said Spencer. “I started off with head shots and he was taking those well. I put one downstairs and I instantly saw it affect him badly. I knew it was a wrap. I was going to keep going to the body.”

Spencer landed a powerful straight right hand to Gambardella’s head early in round two and quickly followed up with a flurry punctuated by another body shot that dropped him for the third time in the fight. Although Spencer looked to close hard, Gambardella was able to fight intelligently and make it through another round.

“I thought the referee was going to stop it in the second round,” said Spencer. “When he let him go I took a deep breath and made sure not to punch myself out. I stuck to my jab and let the rest take care of itself.”

Early into round three, Spencer went back on the attack and connected with a big left hook to Gambardella’s head. Aquesta vegada, referee Ray Corona jumped in and halted the bout 53 segons a la ronda, giving Spencer the TKO victory.

Wilder and Ortiz will renew the rivalry they set in motion when they first engaged in an explosive showdown in Brooklyn that was one of 2018’s best fights. Wilder won that bout by 10º round TKO after Ortiz stunned him and almost had him out in the seventh round. The thrilling match featured plenty of twists and turns to necessitate a rematch.

He is coming off a highlight-reel first round knockout of Dominic Breazeale in Brooklyn on May 18. Before that had one of the most dramatic matches of 2018 when he dropped Tyson Fury twice, including a stunning knockdown in the 12º ronda, on the way to a split draw last December.

Born and still living and training in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, Wilder will return to fight at MGM Grand in Las Vegas for the first time since he won the heavyweight title with a dominant 12-round decision over Bermane Stiverne on January 17, 2015. The victory had even more significance for Wilder because it came on the birthday of his boxing idol, Muhammad Ali. The rematch against Ortiz will be his 10º defensa del títol.

“When I fought Ortiz not only did he have the pedigree, but also he had the classification of being the boogeyman of the division,” Said Wilder. “I agree with those who say that Luis Ortiz was my toughest fight to date. No one wanted to fight him and they still don’t. In the rematch there’s more confidence and more motivation to do what I have to do. I’ve already seen the style before. It’s going to make it more fun. I can’t wait to see how he tries to handle me when I’m at my best.

“This is the second big fight for me under my company, BombZquad Promotions, and I’m very happy about that. We still have a lot of work to do to build it into the kind of company that I know it’s going to be in the future, but it’s coming along. To be able to do a FOX Sports PBC Pay-Per-View at MGM Grand in Las Vegas under my own banner is fantastic.”

Ortiz (31-1, 26 KOs) has ripped off three-straight victories since suffering the only loss of his career in that first match with Wilder in 2018, including most recently winning a unanimous decision over Christian Hammer on March 2. L'esquerrà, who was born in Camaguey, Cuba and now lives in Miami, is one of the most avoided heavyweight contenders in boxing because of his vicious knockout power and crafty southpaw boxing skills. In the first fight with Wilder, Ortiz hurt Wilder with a textbook counter right hook that nearly made him the first Cuban heavyweight world champion.

In my opinion, he’s the best heavyweight in the world until someone beats him, and that’s exactly what I’m going to do on November 23 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena on FOX Sports PBC Pay-Per-View. ‘King Kong’ is coming to Las Vegas!”

A three-division world champion fighting out of Los Angeles, Santa Cruz (36-1-1, 19 KOs) holds the WBA featherweight title and will be making his debut at super featherweight and seeking a title in a fourth weight class. The 31-year-old has been a dominant force in the featherweight division since 2015, including two thrilling featherweight title duels against Abner Mares and Carl Frampton each. He lost the belt in his first match against Frampton in 2016, but reclaimed it in their rematch the following year. Flors (24-2, 12 KOs) was originally scheduled to fight Santa Cruz for the featherweight title in February, but severely sprained his ankle in training and had to withdraw from the fight. Nascut a Mèxic, but raised in and fighting out of Houston, Flores rose up the rankings with victories over Ryan Kielczweski, Ruben Tamayo and Mario Briones. “I feel like all of my fights prepared me for this moment. Porter is not like Mikey Garcia. They have different styles and different mentalities. But there are a lot of distractions fighting at home and I feel like I overcame that to lead me to this point.

“I don’t make anything of the words he’s saying. We train hard and we’re focused and prepared for anything he brings Saturday night.

He’s been talking a lot, his dad’s been talking a lot and I’m going to shut him up. They’re going to call me the “show stopper’ after Saturday night.

“I’ve prepared for everything. It’s all about adjustments. I make them fast in the ring. People thought Kell Brook’s experience would help him but it didn’t at all. I can adjust to my opponent’s style and we will show it Saturday.

“It’s the competitor in me to get at him any way I can. Until that bell rings, we’ll do whatever we need to do to let him know we’re really here to fight him.

“When you’re in there with a top level opponent, it’s supposed to be a close action packed fight. I have everything it takes to make each fight exciting when I step into the ring.

“Everyone has seen everything what I’ve done in my career. Everyone knows I can take a punch and I’ll be there from the first round to the last round. We’ll see what happens to Errol as the fight goes on.

“This is the best camp I’ve ever had. The nutrition and everything has been spot on. I’m ahead of schedule and that’s where I plan to stay. I expect to be eating Friday morning.

“I’m aggressive and I’m strong and guys can’t handle it. There are things that happen in the ring and you just have to move with it. I’m always ready to do whatever it takes to get the job done.

“I expected it to get heated today. I know that if I fire at Errol, he’s going to fire back. That’s how the fights going to be as well. Everyone got a good taste of what you’ll see Saturday.

“Being in the underdog position is literally where I come from. Northeast Ohio is always an underdog. Everybody works where I come from. We always do the best we can.

“The resume is for everyone else to compare and contrast. Per a mi, it’s all about who’s in front of me. I believe I have the right recipe to be the person to get the job done Saturday. I have the style to challenge him physically and mentally.

“I don’t think this fight is going the distance and I know I’m having my hand raised at the end. He got dropped with a jab and I hit harder than Ronald Gavril.”

“Shawn Porter is going to leave the ring with two belts. I’m going to hit him. I’m going to hit him hard and I’m going to do things you’ve never seen anyone do against Errol Spence.

“I’m expecting there to be adversity for Errol. There’s going to be a moment where he realizes he’s losing this fight. He has to be solid psychologically. I don’t know if he’s going to be in the ring. I believe I have the advantage there and that I know how to get into his head.

“I think Errol’s confidence is natural like mine. But I think that he’s fed his confidence to the point where some arrogance has come out. I think he’s going to show that in the fight early on. He’s going to have to adjust. Once he recognizes that, I expect the arrogance to go out the window and that he’ll have to figure it out.

“I’ve never seen Errol go through any adversity in the ring. I don’t think anyone has been able to challenge him the way I can challenge him. Tinc moltes ganes de fer-ho.

“Southpaws always bring the best out of me. I’m young again. You’re going to see the best Shawn Porter.

“I think Errol has a lot more to lose in this fight. He’s never had to deal with a loss, and most people aren’t expecting him to lose. He’s in the perfect position being considered a top welterweight. But from my perspective, I just have absolutely no intention on losing.”

ANTHONY Dirrell

“This is going to be a good fight. David Benavidez is a warrior and I don’t take anything away from him. But I know that I have all the tools to beat him. He’s never fought someone like me. Everyone he knocked out, he was supposed to knock out.

“I have everything I need in my arsenal. I’m versatile. I can switch it up if I need to. If I need to sit in the pocket, I can. If I need to box, I can. I just don’t think Benavidez is what everyone makes him out to be.

FILADÈLFIA — Per 50 any, J Russell Peltz ha viscut i respirat la boxa. A l'octubre 4, celebrarà el seu aniversari d'or com a promotor de Filadèlfia amb una targeta de vuit combats titulada “Sang, Suor & 50 Anys,” al 2300 Arena. A les nits de baralla, inclòs durant el Jack Dempsey vs. Gene Tunney va lluitar 1926 a Filadèlfia, ell seria al costat del ring, recollir actualitzacions i copiar-les i comunicar-les als serveis de cable.


Tal com diu Peltz, seu pare, com molts pares de nens que van arribar a la majoria d'edat als anys 50 i 60, no era expressiu amb les seves emocions. “Simplement no era el tipus de persona,” va començar Peltz, després va fer una pausa. “Més que jo, que ho podria mostrar. La meva mare era l'emocionista, amant.”


El que brilla quan es parla amb Peltz, és com s'estimaven els seus pares. El seu pare li va donar una oficina per treballar, i dues vegades li va prestar diners quan Peltz necessitava un impuls per passar un espectacle o un mal any. Una fractura es va desenvolupar a la família quan Peltz es va casar amb la seva primera dona, una noia no jueva, a 1969, contra la voluntat dels seus pares. Aquest desacord marcaria la resta dels seus anys junts.


En 72 anys, Peltz mira enrere aquests anys i veu un egoista, versió immadura de si mateix, que no tractava tan bé els seus pares. “Mai vaig tenir una relació madura amb els meus pares,” Peltz diria més d'una vegada. “Em penedeixo terriblement d'això.” El seu oncle li havia dit que la seva decisió de casar-se amb la seva primera dona era matar la seva mare, i Peltz el va creure. La culpa és palpable mentre descriu els darrers dies de la seva mare.


L'amargor que havia sentit amb els seus pares’ reacció davant el seu matrimoni i les seves revoltes “aconseguir una feina real” l'actitud cap a la professió escollida va posar un espai entre ells. Després que tots dos hagin passat, l'orgull i el ressentiment van donar pas ràpidament a la culpa i el penediment.


Al final, era casa de la seva germana i després dels seus pares’ casa a la qual aniria quan el seu primer matrimoni es va trencar. Cada dia s'aturava i saludava el seu pare, que li havia construït una oficina sobre la seva empresa de fontaneria. La fundació de la seva família, que s'havia construït sobre l'amor i el compromís silenciosos, es va mostrar inflexible al llarg dels anys.


No va passar gaire després de la mort de la seva mare que va conèixer la dona que es convertiria en la seva dona actual–un antic company de classe de l'institut Lower Merion. Peltz sabia des de la seva primera cita que es casaria amb Linda Sablosky. No es trobaven enlloc els sentiments persistents de dubte que va tenir en el seu primer matrimoni. Per a algú que es veu a si mateix com a poc emocional i poc expressiu, l'enormitat del seu amor i devoció per Linda des d'aquella primera cita fins avui és evident. En quatre hores d'entrevistes, va ser quan va parlar de la Linda quan va sonar més complert i animat.


“La família ho és tot per a Linda,” va dir Peltz. “Va reunir cosins separats i altres membres de la família i es va apropar molt al meu pare, trucant-lo cada dia.


“Si la meva mare hagués conegut la Linda,” va continuar, plorant suaument, “hauria tingut una raó per viure.”


Linda va encaixar sense esforç al seu món de la boxa. Sovint assistia a esdeveniments, viatjant amb Peltz. “Linda és el tipus de persona que pot existir en qualsevol món, en qualsevol ambient, i tothom l'estima.” va dir Peltz. “Em va ajudar a la boxa. La gent diu, ‘Què dolent pot ser? Ella es va casar amb ell!’


“Linda mai està ociosa. Ella pot omplir-se 24 hores al dia. Ella és la reina de la botiga de dòlars. No aguanta seure sense fer res. Si Linda ho té 400 coses a fer i només vull fer 200 d'ells, ella diu que sóc avorrit.”


Els dos tindrien dos fills, Mateu i Daniel. Mateu, la més antiga, estava interessat per la música i les noies. Era un "deadhead".,’ el sobrenom atorgat als fans de Grateful Dead, i va viatjar amb ells durant un estiu. Finalment es va traslladar a Israel i es va convertir en rabí. Es va casar i va tenir quatre fills.


Daniel era l'atleta, participant en diferents esports, inclosa una curta carrera de boxa amateur que Peltz va amagar a la mare de Daniel durant un curt període de temps.


Peltz va fer tot el possible per no perdre mai cap partit. “Ell sempre estava allà per mi,” va dir en Daniel. “Va viatjar molt, però sempre va fer temps per als meus esdeveniments esportius. No va perdre cap fita.”


Peltz i la seva dona van perdre Matthew a causa d'una sobredosi de drogues 2017. Ell només ho era 38. Sobretot perquè en el moment de la meva carrera això va passar. Per guanyar un títol mundial com aquest, en una terra estrangera, venint de darrere de la tela, sense cap tir per guanyar excepte per nocaut…amb la Linda cridant i plorant i es va aixecar d'un salt perquè estima en Jason. Va ser tan genial. Una sensació tan meravellosa. Un dels moments més destacats de la meva carrera. No és el número u, però és com l'1A.”


Nombre un, afegir, va ser quan va ser el seu primer càrrec, Bennie Briscoe, va noquejar a Tony Mundine a París 1974: “Això sempre serà el número u. Va ser una eliminatòria. Érem desfavorits. Va ser el meu primer viatge a Europa i va ser la lluita més gran que es podia tenir sense que fos pel títol. Va ser una nit tan meravellosa.”


El seu protegit, La nena furiosa Michelle Rosado, qui està promocionant “Estimar, Suor & 50 Anys,” és un dels molts que veuen en Peltz com una figura paterna. La boxa sempre serà el lloc on Peltz pugui estimar en veu alta, però el seu llegat serà per sempre la manera en què va estimar els qui va tocar en el passat 50 any.

LAS VEGAS (Setembre 16, 2019) – The next wave of Reno boxers will continue its rich boxing tradition October 25 a “RJJ Boxing on UFC FIGHT PASS®,” co-promoted by Joey Gilbert Promotions in association with Silver Legacy Resort Casino at THE ROW in Reno, Nevada.

Organized boxing was held during the early 1880’s in small mining towns in the Northwest section of Nevada, professional boxing matches were conducted there later that century.

Jeffries, stopping him in the 15º round at what was reportedly the only venue ever built for a single boxing event. Boxing stars including Jake Kilrain, Tommy Burns, i Abe Attell were introduced to the reported crowd of 16,528.

Richard first brought another Hall of Fame heavyweight champion, Jack Dempsey, to Reno in 1915 for his ninth pro fight, when Dempsey stopped Emmanuel Campbell in the fourth round at Airdrome Arena. To fight, Dempsey had to “ride the rails” from Utah to Reno, stored away on a train with hobos. Dempsey returned three years later to knockoutJack Moran in the opening round at Moana Spring Arena.

Dempsey may have been involved in unsanctioned fights in Reno as well. Desperate for money during the early part of his boxing career, Dempsey is infamous for walking into saloons and saying, “I can’t sing, and I can’t dance, but I can lick any SOB in the house.”
