Sampson Boxing Signs a Pair of Undefeated Dominican Prospects, Edwin De Los Santos and Luis Reynaldo Nunez, to Promotional Contracts

Sampson Boxing proudly announces the signing of a pair of undefeated 21-year-old Dominican prospects, super featherweight Edwin De Los Santos and super bantamweight Luis Reynaldo Nunez to promotional agreements.

A crow-pleasing puncher with tremendous will, the southpaw De los Santos (9-0, 8 Biaya), dari Santo Domingo, Republik Dominika, started boxing at the age of eight and went on to win numerous national amateur championships in his boxing-rich homeland. Pada usia 14, he joined the Dominican’s prestigious National Boxing Team and, di 18, made the move to professional ranks. De Los Santos has already captured the WBA Fedecaribe and WBC Latino Super Featherweight Championships in his young career.

“It motivated me seeing how so many other great Dominican fighters have reached places they never dreamed of under the guidance of Sampson Boxing,” said De Los Santos of the signing. I am committed to bringing another world championship home to my country, defending it with pride and courage as many times as possible and improving the economic situation of my family.”

Also a decorated amateur in the Dominican, Puerto Plata’s Luis Reynaldo Nunez started boxing at age six and went on to win a number of national and international championships all over the world as a member of the elite Dominican national team. A fan-friendly pressure fighter with heavy hands, Nunez turned professional at 18 under the guidance of manger Antonio Tineo and trainer Vicente De La Cruz, best known as the trainer of former unified world champion Jeison (el Banana) Rosario. Nunez won the Dominican Republic Super Bantamweight Championship in 2019 and has successfully defended it once. He added the WBA Fedelatin Super Bantamweight Title in December of last year with a fourth-round stoppage of Nicaragua’s Giovanni Gutierrez. Gutierrez had previously gone the 10-round distance with top contender Mike Plania.

“I am grateful to Mr. Antonio Tineo, who is like a father to me. I’m also excited to work with Sampson Boxing and all the opportunities he wins for his fighters. I will be a proud world champion from the Dominican Republic. I also want to improve the economic situation of my family (grandparents and parents) who have given everything to me without asking for anything in return.”

A staunch advocate of Dominican boxing, Lewkowicz has expertly guided the careers of esteemed Dominican champions Jeison “Banana” Rosario, Javer “El Abejón” Fortuna, Jonathan Guzman, Dahiana Santana and Katy Wilson Castillo. He was introduced to Tineo through his long-time Dominican talent scout Cesar “Manguita” Mercedes.

Lewkowicz says he’s looking forward to working with the two young talents and to partnering with Tineo on several more promising fighters in the future.

“I have always supported Dominican boxers and have helped several of them become world champions,Kata Lewkowicz. “I thank Cesar Mercedes for introducing me to Mr. Tineo and I look forward to helping establish several more Dominican champions during our work together. Both Nunez and De Los Santos are elite-level fighters who will be contenders in their divisions in the near future.”

Undefeated lightweight Jamaine Ortiz Takes on Unbeaten joseph adorno

The Technician” vs. “Blessed Hands”

This Saturday in Florida on ESPN+

WORCESTER, Massa. (Bulan April 19, 2021) – Rarely do undefeated prospects with double-digit victories fight each other because of the perceived risk like lightweightsJamaine "The Technician" Ortiz (14-0, 8 Biaya) danJoseph “Blessed Hands” Adorno (14-0-1, 12 Biaya) will do this Saturday night, Bulan April 24th, at Silver Spurs Arena in Kissimmee, Florida.

The 8-roundAdorno vs. Ortiz pertarungan, streaming live onESPN +, will be on the Top Rank card headlined (di ESPN) by WBO World featherweight championEmanuel Navarette (32-1, 24 Biaya) defending his title against challengerChristopher Diaz (26-2, 16 Biaya).

Both young lightweights were decorated USA amateur boxers who are rising stars in arguably boxing’s most loaded division.

“I’m counting the days,” Ortiz said about his fight with Adorno. “I’ve trained hard my whole life. When an opportunity like this comes, I’m ready to prove myself. I think I’ll have a spectacular performance and impress the crowd like I usually do. I’m fighting on another big card; I’m going up not down.”

The reigning WBC USNBC (U.S.) Silver lightweight champion, in addition to being a former WBC World Youth lightweight titlist, the 24-year-old Ortiz recently cracked the top 40 in the WBC ratings at 31, and he’s also ranked No. 5 by the NABF.

Ortiz is coming off a sensational, high-profile knockout ofSulaiman Segawa (13-3-1, 4 Biaya), who had never been stopped, in the seventh round last November on the Mike Tyson-Roy Jones, Jr. pay-per-view event.

The lone blemish on the 21-year-old Adorno’s pro record came in his last fight, back on January 11, 2020, when he fought an 8-round split draw withHector Garcia (14-7-3).  Born in New Jersey and raised in Puerto Rico, Adorno lives and trains in Allentown, Pennsylvania.

Ortiz surprisingly may have what amounts to a “hometown” advantage, at least in terms of vocal support, largely because many of his New England friends and family are flying down to Florida to attend the fight, along with his Florida fans.

“My father lived in Florida and I visited him during summers, and I went to second grade there,” Ortiz explained. “I have a big family-base in Orlando. A lot of family and friends from Worcester are going to the fight. I’m surprised by how many people will be there for me.”

Ortiz dipromosikan olehJimmy Burchfield’s Classic Entertainment and Sports (CES), which will co-promoteAdorno vs. Ortiz with Top Rank, and managed byDick Shappy

“Both teams need to be complimented for taking a fight like this.” Burchfield commented. “Two undefeated, young boxers like this fighting each other is what real boxing is all about. Bob Arum, Carl Moretti Team Top Rank have been friends of mine for so many years.

“We turned Jamaine pro and through all these years as a promoter (32nd), mungkin, every decade or so you have a special one like Jamaine, who can become the future of boxing. When you find a fighter who can box, punch and set-up his punches very well, he’s special and I feel Jamaine is special like that, not only in the ring but outside as well. I don’t worry about getting a late-night call about him. He is a total professional, no distractions with him. Jamaine works as a carpenter, he’s learning the real estate business, and he’s also looking into the medical field in the future. He reminds me ofSugar Ray Leonard danOscar De Lay Hoya.  He has that charisma and is a technician in the ring. A very smart kid in the ring. He has a spectacular team of managers and trainer to work with, juga."

“For many years,” Shappy added, “our management team (termasuk di dalamnyaEddie Imondi) had been searching for the right boxer to come along that had the potential to be a world champ. We are very confident that we have found that person, Jamaine ‘The Technician’ Ortiz.”

Rare as it may be in boxing, the reward is ultimately worth the risk for these legitimate fighters, Ortiz and Adormo.

DON KING DEMANDS HEAVYWEIGHT CHRISTOPHER LOVEJOY TO NOT FIGHT MAHMOUD CHARR ON MAY 15 IN GERMANY

Pantai Deerfield, Fla. (Bulan April 19, 2021)—Hall of Fame boxing promoter Don King has sent a Cease & Desist letter to undefeated heavyweight boxer Christopher Lovejoy, claiming he is under an exclusive promotional agreement with Don King Promotions and not permitted to enter any future fights without King’s consent.

Recent media reports have stated that Lovejoy is currently in Germany and has agreed to face the WBA champion in recess Mahmoud Charr on May 15 in Hamburg, Jerman.

Trevor Bryan recently won the WBA heavyweight title after Charr disregarded the WBA and was not allowed in the United States due to Homeland Security visa denial of the Syrian.

The letter demands that Lovejoy (19-0, 19 Biaya), who had previously announced his retirement from boxing, not participate in the bout with Charr or any other future bout or opponent.

“It is unconscionable, illegal, and unethical for you to participate in this May 15, 2021 bout or any bout without DKP’s expressed, written permission and consent,” the letter from King’s lawyer’s states. “Participating in any bout without DKP’s expressed written consent is … willfully breaching the Promotional Agreement and exposes those you have entered into agreement with for your services as a professional fighter to extreme legally liability, as they too are aware that you are under contract to DKP.”

The letter goes on to state, “If you have in fact signed to fight Charr as you proclaim and has been reported in these media reports, you have intentionally, willfully, and maliciously breached your exclusive, world-wide promotional agreement with DKP.”

Lovejoy, 37, lives and trains in Las Vegas. Semua 19 of Lovejoy’s pro fights since February of 2016 have taken place in Tijuana, Meksiko.

Crossroads: doubleheader results from N.H.: Kendrick Ball, Jr. hits home run vs. Bryan Vera

“Crossroads” results from New Hampshire

DERRY, N.H. (Bulan April 18, 2021) -Former New England middleweight championKendrick “Peppa” Ball, Jr. turned in a career-best performance in last night’s main event against dangerousBryan “The Warrior” Vera on the evening portion of the “Crossroads” day-night doubleheader, disajikan oleh promosi dagu granit, at New England Sports Center in Derry, New Hampshire.

The pre-fight plan was followed as Ball (16-1-2, 11 Biaya) boxed and moved, while Vera (28-17, 18 Biaya) applied pressure, right from the opening bell. Ball took control in the second round, when he stayed in the pocket, snapping off crisp combinations. Ball fired more effective combinations in the third round as Vera started chasing his opponent. Ball started moving around the ring and fighting from the outside in the fourth and stayed on his toes the remainder of the fight.

Ball won an 8-round unanimous decision (79-73, 79-73, 78-74) to become the World Boxing Council (WBC) USNBC (AS) Silver Super Middleweight Champion.

“This was my best fight, because of who I fought, and the magnitude of the fight,” Ball commented. “The plan was to box and move because he was much smaller and slower. At times I banged, when I knew he wasn’t hurting me, but I shouldn’t have taken the risks.”

The 39-year-old Vera isn’t the same fighter he was when he beat three different world champions –Andy LeeSergio Mora (dua kali) danSerhiy Dzinziruk.  The Texan needs to decide if it’s time to finally hang up his gloves.

“This was awesome, definitely our best show to date,” Granite Chin’sCiri -ciri Chris declared after the show. “We feel great about stepping up to give these fighters, especially the locals, a platform to perform on in front of fans. I think a lot of promoters have gotten lazy. They gave us a lane and Granite Chin took advantage. This was our fourth show with fans during the last year. Brian fought hard and he’s a great guy, but he’s not the same guy he was in 2011. He needs to think about what he’s going to do.

“Granite Chin returns here June 26th with another doubleheader. The afternoon show will be the Granite Chin Invitational for open elite boxers. With the New England Golden Gloves canceled again there is a void to fill. If promoters are going to help amateurs, I certainly will, starting June 26th."

PenantangMarquis Bates (8-4, 6 Biaya) dethroned defending New Hampshire Welterweight ChampionRyan diBartolomeo (3-2-1, 1 KO) via a sixth-round stoppage in an entertaining co-feature. A devastating overhand right from Bates gave him his new crown as the referee didn’t even count as the ring doctor quickly entered the ring.

Larry “Hitman” Pryor took the contract out onScott Lambert and he wasted little time taking care of business to become the New Hampshire Cruiserweight Champion. Pryor took advantage of his decisive height and reach advantages, closing the show with a perfectly thrown left hook that sent Lambert to the canvas. Lambert managed to beat the count, but the referee stopped the fight midway through the opening round when he saw Lambert wobbling back and forth on rubbery legs.

Lanky lefthandedFrancis “The Tank” Hogan (5-0, 5 Biaya) graduated last night with a brilliant performance againstLarry “Slo Mo” Smith, who was in his 60th career fight. Hogan put down Smith early in the third round and caught the Texan late in the same round with a lefty-combination to the temple. Smith beat the count, but he was unable to answer the bell for the fourth round, and 20-year-old Hogan became the new New Hampshire Junior Middleweight Champion.

Former New England heavyweight championJustin “Crazy Train” Rolfe (5-2-1, 4 Biaya) positioned himself for another N.E. title shot with a spectacular knockout ofAlfredo “Choncho” Trevino (9-9-1, 1 KO). The 263-pound Rolfe, fighting out of Fairfield, Maine, charged across the ring at the bell and put his Arizona opponent to sleep right in his corner, when he was counted out at the 20-seconds mark.

The newest member of the fightin’ Whitley family from western Massachusetts, welter tak terkalahkanDenzel Whitley, cruised to his fourth victory with his fourth knockout. He drilledAquilandro Brandao late in round one and the fight was stopped by the referee.

TerkalahkanJahye Brown (9-0, 7 Biaya) captured the vacant ABF Athletic junior middleweight title with a hard fought 8-round unanimous decision over a game Mexican opponent,Dormedes Potes (12-4-1, 9 Biaya).  The two fought toe-to-toe from the opening bell and Brown landed the more effective punches inside to earn the victory.

Promising middleweight prospectJulien “Black Dragon” Baptiste ditingkatkan untuk 2-0 with his second knockout, blasting outBruno Dias in the third round.

Fighting for the first time in more than eight years, Sungai Musim Gugur, MA kelas welterDustin Reinhold (6-4, 2 Biaya) won a 4-round unanimous decision over pro-debutingAnthonyAndreozziin what can best be called a rough and tumble match

Menengah juniorCarlos Castillo’s professional debut was a gem as the Holyoke, MA fighter droppedTheo Desjardon dua kali, the last closing the show late in the first round.

“Cannon” Berry stops Ibarra in 5

UBO All-America Welterweight ChampionBrandon “The Cannon” Berry (21-5-2, 13 Biaya) successfully defended in the afternoon card’s main event, overcoming a slow start in which he was buzzed to stop challengerGael Ibarra (5-3, 4 Biaya) in the fifth round.

Berry finished the fight in the fifth, when he unloaded twin barrages of unanswered punches on a trapped Ibarra until the referee waved off the fight.

“I’m glad it wasn’t a 4-round fight,” Berry said after the fight. “He was a strong guy. I was feeling it. He tested me. I want to thank my family and friends here, and Granite Chin and everybody involved in the promotion.”

Dalam acara co-fitur, New England heavyweight championMike “Fly” Marshall (4-1, 3 Biaya), in a non-title fight, tersingkirTracey Johnson (4-10-6) in the third round.

Popular Boston IrishmanJimmy Torney (3-0, 3 Biaya) – 6’ 6”, 269 lbs. – needed only 42-seconds and one big right to stop pro-debuting heavyweightMarco Nascimento

Kelas welter MassachusettsEric “Gladiator” Goff convincingly won his pro debut againstJader Alves(0-5) as he pitched a 4-round shutout

Three-time New England Golden Gloves championDemek “Hightower” Edmonds had an awesome pro debut, dropping cruiserweightFrancisco Neto twice in round one, the second a vicious body shot ending the fight. Edmonds, a southpaw from Worcester, MA, is a college graduate and bonafide prospect to watch.

Dalam pertarungan non-gelar, Juara kelas welter New EnglandMike "Orang Jahat" Ohan, Jr. (12-1, 6 Biaya) schooled his 54-fight Las Vegas opponent, menengah juniorRynell GriffinOhan decked Griffin three times in the first round, the third with a left hook to the body from which Griffin was unable to beat the count.

Canadian cruiserweightYan “Wild Thing” Pellerin (11-1, 5 Biaya) landed two stinging rights to the body of 63-fight veteranSteve “The Spoiler” Walker, both flooring the Missouri fighter, the second resulting in an opening-round knockout for the vacant ABF Atlantic title.

Connecticut welterweightOmar “The Beast” Borday, Jr. (1101, 3 Biaya) dominated 65-fight journeymanDewayne Wisdom en route to a one-sided 8-round unanimous decision.

ABEL & KUTIPAN KAMP PELATIHAN JESÚS RAMOS

“Saya suka berlatih dengan anak muda, pejuang lapar seperti Jesús. Kami memberi makan energi satu sama lain,”- Abel Ramos

RUMAH BESAR, THE.

Saya menyaksikan pertarungan Figueroa melawan Ugas.

“Saya ingin sekali mengalahkan Molina. Dia menghadapi beberapa petarung tangguh dan tidak ada yang bisa menjatuhkannya. Tetapi jika saya tidak bisa mendapatkan KO maka saya hanya ingin mendominasi dia dan terlihat bagus mendapatkan kemenangan sebisa saya. "

HAGLER AND HEARNS WENT TO ‘WAR’ 36 YEARS AGO IN ONE OF THE NINE MEMORABLE FIGHTS FEATURED IN SHOWTIME SPORTS DOCUMENTARY FILMSTHE KINGS

NEW YORK - April 15, 2021 – From 1980 melalui 1989, four great champions and future Hall of Famers raised the level of their sport. It was boxing at its best, at its most enthralling. Over the span of one glorious decade, they fought each other nine times.Roberto “Manos de Piedra” Durán, Marvelous Marvin Hagler, Thomas “The Hitman” Hearnsdan Sugar Ray Leonard, known collectively as the “Four Kings,” formed a fierce rivalry and arguably the greatest period in the history of the sport.

SHOWTIME SPORTS DOCUMENTARY FILMS will be presentingTHE KINGS, a four-part series chronicling the four fightersdramatic and divergent ascents to greatness and the legendary matches they produced. They dominated an era of their own creation, but not each other. The weekly series premieres on Sunday, Bulan Juni 6 di 8 p.m. DAN / PT pada SHOWTIME, with all episodes being made available across the network’s on-demand and streaming platforms at premiere.

Today marks the 36th anniversary of the epic middleweight championship battle between Hagler and Hearns. Long considered the high-water mark of the Four Kings era, Hagler-Hearns stands out for the drama and brutal non-stop action that was compressed into just over eight minutes from start to finish. The fight and the opening stanza were consensus Fight of the Year and Round of the Year, masing-masing, but many consider both as one of, kalau tidakitu, all-time best in their respective categories.

Di bawah, please find the observations and recollections of those who covered that fight, many who are featured inTHE KINGS.

I remember the week of the fight, Hagler wore a baseball hat with ‘WARon the front, dan saya pikir, ‘eh, the usual pre fight hype’until the first bellthen I said, “WOW, Hagler was right.

– Teddy Atlas, Hall of Fame trainer and boxing analyst

I covered the fight as a columnist for The New York Times. Here was my leadUntil Thomas Hearns fell, with the assistance of a smashing right to the face by Marvelous Marvin Hagler, and was ruled the loser at 2:01 dari babak ketiga, hardly a second passed that one of the fighters wasn’t throwing and landing a stunning blow.

– Ira Berkowringside for The New York Times

The excitement at the outdoor arena at Caesars Palace was palpable. As I sat ringside I did something I now do regularly before a match. When both Hagler and Hearns had entered and were in the ring I took my headsets off just to feel the emotion of the crowd better. I wanted to live that moment. Saat Ini, I do that before every big match just before it begins. At the end of the first round, I said on the telecast, ‘This is one of the best rounds in middleweight boxing history.I may have been underselling it.”

– Al Bernstein, SHOWTIME Boxing analyst / ringside, called the fight as part of the live closed-circuit telecast team

I knew trouble was brewing when in the last leg of their nationwide press tour, Marvin stuck dinner napkins in both ears as Tommy stood to continue three weeks of boasting about a third-round knockout. ‘He’s half right,’ Hagler later groused. The first round sucked the air out of the arena and the finish was Hagler’s violent response to all the forces he believed had tried to deny him greatness his whole career. Marvin took all his frustrations out on poor Tommy and left him in a heap on the floor, broken like an old beach chair.”

– Ron Borges, ringside for the Boston Globe

I was sitting first-row ringside that night next to Ed Schuyler Jr., the great AP boxing writer. We were anticipating a good fight, but we had no idea how good. The bell rang and suddenly Hagler and Hearns were fighting in a fury that was hard to comprehend and just as hard to describe. When the round ended, I remember looking at Schuyler shaking my head, not saying a word, and he did the same to me back. It was like ‘What did we just see?’ I’ve seen thousands of fights, but to this day that three minutes of mayhem is forever etched in my mind. No need to watch the old video, I remember it almost punch by punch. Greatest first round ever, and top five in greatest fights I’ve ever covered.

– Tim Dahlberg, ringside for the Associated Press

A wise old journalist once told me, ‘If you’re covering a fight, or anything for that matter, that’s truly sensational, don’t try to write it that way. Underplay it.’ I think of that advice whenever anybody mentions Hagler-Hearns. For fight fans, it was invigorating, inspiring, incredibleeverything we could ever hope for. For fight writers, it was a bit different. How could we describe that first round without overstepping our boundsSometimes it’s easier being a fan.

– Steve Farhood, SHOWTIME Boxing analyst / Covered the fight as senior writer for KO magazine

I will always remember sitting in the truck, as the producer of the telecast, and telling Marc Payton, the director, to stick with the hand-held camera in the last minute of the first round, mesmerized that they had planted themselves in front ofbahwa kamera. It was the longest three minutes of action in my entire career. I turned to Marc at the end of the round and just asked, ‘What the hell was that?’ It was actually a more emphatic expletive than that.

– Ross Greenburgexecutive producer of the fight telecast

At the end of the first round I was literally speechless. The action had been so incredibly intensethey had attacked each other with the kind of ferocity you only see in a horror moviethat I had watched it all with my mouth wide open, and in the dry desert air my mouth had become completely bone dry, so I was unable to get a word out when Ian Darke asked me for my comment. Eventually I managed to say, ‘That’s the greatest round of boxing I’ve ever seen. And all these years later, it still remains so.

– Colin Hart, ringside for The Sun and BBC Radio

Whenever I’m asked to name the most exciting sporting event I ever attended, I respond, ‘Hagler-Hearns.Never do I have to explain.

– Barry Horn, ringside for the Dallas Morning News

Greatest first round in the history of boxing at any weight. Hearns hits him with the best right hand he ever threw, wobbles him, opens a cut on his forehead but two rounds later Marvin fights off the blood and knocks him out. Seventy years covering boxing and I never saw anything like it.

– Jerry Izenberg, ringside for The Star-Ledger

Being at ringside for the eight minutes of fury known as the Marvin Hagler-Thomas Hearns fight was as close as anyone could come to understanding the days of gladiators in the Roman Colosseum. The first round was all-out warfare with both fighters exchanging their best power shots. Hearns tried to box in the second, but Hagler wouldn’t let him, and when the blood started pouring from a cut on Hagler’s forehead in the third and there was a danger the fight might be stopped, Hagler later said, ‘It turns me on, the monster comes out.Boy, did it! I never will forget the image of one of Hearns’ handlers cradling him like a child and carrying him to the corner, which is why I led with that picture. Easily the most savage boxing match I’ve witnessed between two all-time greats.

– Greg Logan, ringside for Newsday

Although the action and drama lasted eight-plus breathless minutes, it actually was over in the first minute or so when KO star Hearns landed a flush right and Hagler didn’t blink. It was then I realized that Hagler, normally a patient stalker, had signaled his intention to use his middleweight strength to challenge a big welterweight by pounding his chest defiantly just before the opening bell rang. A night and fight to remember.

– Larry Merchant, ringside commentator for delay telecast

Obviously the greatest round of boxing I’ve ever seen, let alone called. One of those moments that you knew the magnitude of as it was happening. That first round felt like it was a half hour long.

– Barry Tompkins, SHOWTIME Boxing analyst / ringside to call the delay fight telecast

I didn’t know what to expect since it was my first time watching a fight at a movie theater. Whites and Blacks in Memphis only socialized around sports back then. It was a mixed crowd in the theater, but the same reaction: pure joy and excitement. Everyone stood throughout the entire fight. It was violent, courageous, and thrilling.”

– George Willis, covering from a closed-circuit outlet in Memphis for The Commercial Appeal

I covered that fight, dan banyak lainnya, for The Detroit News. I’ll never forget the absolute savagery in the way Hearns and Hagler went at each other from the opening bell, and the way the crowd roared with every punch. One telling moment: Hearns connected with a wicked left hook that turned Hagler half around from the force of the punchbut never fazed him. It has been called the greatest short fight in history, and that stands up to this day. The first round set the tone. I remember after the fight someone asked Larry Merchant of HBO how he scored that first round. ‘I gave them both 11,he replied. That said it all.

– Mike O’Hara, ringside for The Detroit News

My memory of the first roundaction so immediate and reckless that spectators were left breathless. So were the reporters at ringside. I was there for the Boston Globe, and I remember the veteran scribes who sat paralyzed after the bell, unable to type or scratch notes, me included. A deep gash opened above Hagler’s right eye, and Hearnsright hand fractured. In the third round, with blood running down Hagler’s nose, the referee stopped the bout and asked Hagler if he could continue. Hagler snapped‘I’m not missing him, am I?’ When the bout resumed Hagler attacked quickly, bounced three long rights off of Hearnshead, and watched him twist downward to the canvas.

– Steve Marantzringside for the Boston Globe

I remember how difficult it was, on a tight deadline, to give justice to that spectacular first round. How many superlatives could I pack into the story without inducing nauseaHagler quietly, confidently selling the fightsimply, wearing a cap with ‘Waremblazoned on the front. Then that nail-hard infantryman, coming, always coming after Hearns. Hearns out on his feet, chin on referee Richard Steele’s shoulder and then carried to his corner. I can still hear the crowd roaring throughout the short fight, knowing all of us were witnessing a brawl for the ages.

– John Phillipsringside for Reuters

What I remember about this war was there was no feeling (each other) out, they just came out slugging from the opening bell! It was so loud outside at Caesars Palace, the most iconic venue, that made this fight even more special. I wish more fights were outside. I also thought that Referee Richard Steele did a great job and just let them fight!”

– Marc RatnerNevada State Athletic Commission Inspector for Hagler-Hearns

Hagler-Hearns was the first major fight I covered and the first time I was ever in Las Vegas. I was there to do sidebars and run quotes for Greg Logan, who was doing the main story for Newsday. I got a seat in press row when press row was truly ringside, literally within 10 feet of the ring apron. And after the incredible first round, I was on my feet, my legs quivering, when I noticed all the other older, more grizzled reporters were standing too, stunned by what we all had just seen. At that moment, Eddie Schuyler of the AP turned to me and deadpanned in that sardonic manner of his, ‘You know, kid, they aren’t all like this.He turned out to be right. Over the next 38 years and who knows how many first rounds, I have yet to see another one like that.

– Wally Matthewsringside for Newsday
