BIBA To Permit Rehydration Drinks In Competition To Reduce Dehydration and also Risk of Potential Bleeds To Brain

In March this year the British & Irish Boxing Authority (BIBA) became the first Professional Boxing Commission to introduce Infra-Scanners ringside at events sanctioned by themselves, in an effort to reduce the time between diagnosis of possible bleeds to the brain following contests and the receiving of effective treatment.

 

Since introducing the Infra-Scanners the BIBA Deputy Chief Medical Officer Professor Michael Graham, has been undertaking research into head injuries in sport as well as investigating procedures that may assist in reducing the actual risk of bleed to the brain injuries in competition.

 

The on-going research has highlighted a number of concerning issues, one such issue relates to volume changes of cerebrospinal fluids (CSF) which is directly related to dehydration, as such Professor Graham and the BIBA Medical Committee, headed by BIBA CMO Dr Louise Eccles, have made a number of recommendations that they believe should be introduced as they could assist in reducing the risks.

Besides the recent introduction of the ‘Rehydration Clause’ for all day before weigh-in contests, the first of these new initiatives to be introduced is that from January 2018 rehydration drinks will be permissible for consumption by competitors during the one minute break between rounds during all contests of eight rounds and over, in an attempt to reduce excess dehydration during longer duration contests, which potentially also reduces the risk of bleed to the brain injuries.

 

The Effect of Fluid Intake Following Dehydration on Subsequent Athletic, Cognitive Performance & Potential Traumatic Brain Injuries

A systematic review and meta-analysis (McCartney et al., 2017) of sixty-four (64) trials derived from 42 international publications indicates:

  1. A beneficial effect for fluid intake on athletic and cognitive performance is strongest when a continuous exercise task is employed (i.e., high intensity sport e.g., bocsio).
  2. The magnitude of improvement is greater when the continuous exercise is performed at elevated environmental temperatures and over longer exercise durations (i.e., boxing multiple rounds, in closed environments, where temperatures are greater than standard room temperature and pressure).
  3. The volume of fluid consumed, relative to body mass (BM) lost, does not appear to influence the size of the treatment effect. The fluid intake at levels that comply with current recommendations for restoring body water content (1.25–1.50 L per kg BM lost) are as yet inconclusive. Rehydration drinks must be allowed ad libitum.

Joshua vs. Takam is the first of two consecutive heavyweight world bouts on SHOWTIME. “First and foremost, massive credit to Eddie [Hearn] because he’s done amazing work. He was ahead of the game and he’s managed to allow this show to go ahead. Credit to Carlos Takam, a true athlete who stays fit all year round. He’s not someone who just trains for a fight, he seems to keep himself conditioned and that’s what we like. He’s the same as myself. And I think – what would I do? Would I give up the IBF belt? Hell no. I worked too hard for it.”

 

CARLOS TAKAM:

“I’m ready for this fight, I’m ready for everything he has. I’ve been waiting for this opportunity for a long time. We were in the gym getting ready, hoping we would get this chance.

White Plains, NY/Philadelphia, PA — Demetrius Andrade, two-time and undefeated world champion, showed that he has the drawing power to go along with his unquestioned ring talent as his bout with undefeated Alantez Fox outdrew both the main event and opening bouts in the ratings last Saturday night by over 90,000 viewers on HBO Boxing After Dark®.
The Andrade – Fox bout peeked at 685,000 gwylwyr. That number outdrew the main event, the WBA World Super Featherweight title bout between Jezreel Corrales & Alberto Machado. That is an impressive number considering the sports viewing competition was incredibly strong. That competition was headlined by Game 7 of the American League Championship Series (New York Yankees – Houston Astros) as well as two high-profile college football games featuring Penn State and Michigan as well as Notre Dame and USC.
Those games were all still going on when Andrade and Fox walked to the ring but were well over by the time the main event started.
“To have Demetrius pull in that viewership going against The Yankees, Penn State, Notre Dame, Michigan and USC just shows the interest in an American boxer who can be considered one of the best out there. Schaub asked Wilder as the only American heavyweight champion, why he hasn’t received the notoriety yet that he deserves in the U.S. “I don’t get it either,” Wilder said. “It’s mind boggling to see Americans support others before they support their own.”

The one to watch, 25-year-old knockout sensation Shohjahon “Descendant of Tamerlane” Ergashev has been added to the untelevised undercard of the Dydd Sadwrn, Tachwedd 11, Danny Jacobs vs. Luis Arias and Jarrell Miller vs. Mariusz Wach boxing event at NYCB LIVE: Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Uniondale, Efrog Newydd.
Jacobs vs. Arias and Miller vs. Wach are presented by Matchroom Boxing USA, in association with Brooklyn Sports & Adloniant, Salita Promotions and Roc Nation Sports. It will be televised live on HBO World Championship Boxing beginning at 10:00 p.m. A/PT. Considered one of the best current prospects coming out of Central Asia, the popular Ergashev (9-0, 9 Kos) is a former four-time national champion in his home country. Fel gweithiwr proffesiynol, the dangerous southpaw has won his last five fights in the first round.

Although it’s his first fight in the US, he will have hundreds of people from his community in New York City and from around the country, and even from Russia, coming to support him on Tachwedd 11.”
In his last appearance, in June at the Floyd Mayweather Boxing Academy in Zhukovka, Rwsia, Ergashev needed less than a minute to knock opponent Sunatollo Rakhmatulloev down twice and stop him at 0:50 o'r cylch cyntaf.

In other action that night, undefeated New York City police officer Dimash “Mellt” Niyazov (12-0, 5 Kos) born in Shymkent, Kazakhstan, now residing in Staten Island, NY, will also fight in a six-round lightweight bout on the non-televised portion of the undercard.

LAS VEGAS, NV (Hydref 24, 2017) – Prince Ranch Bocsio (PRB) has signed managerial agreements with four standout prospects from Mexico, super-featherweight edwing Davila(16-0, 9 Kos), featherweights Isaac Avelar (13-0, 8 Kos), Mexico Featherweight titlist Daniel Colula (12-1-2, 3 Kos), and female Mayran Salazar (6-2). All fighters were signed to Damien Vazquez’ “siwgr Hyrwyddiadau” and will fight constantly in Aguascalientes, Mecsico.
“Signing talent from Mexico is a vital piece to my operation,” Dywedodd Greg Hannely. “Our goal here at Prince Ranch Boxing, is to have a solid foundation of fighters from Mexico, in addition to having great talent from America. Sugar Promotions had their first show last week in Aguascalientes, Mecsico. Their next show will be scheduled before the end of 2017.

The 30-year-old Alexander (26-4, 14 Kos) will end a two-year layoff due to health issues when he steps in against Castillo. Alexander, St. Louis, Missouri, won the 147-pound world championship with a unanimous decision victory over Randall Bailey in 2012. He lost the title via unanimous decision against Shawn Porter the next year. Alexander, a southpaw, was a unified champion at 140-pounds and owns victories over Marcos Maidana, Lucas Matthysse and Jesus Soto Karass.
“Two years is a long time to be away from something you love but I wanted to make sure when I come back that I would be 100 percent my old self,” meddai Alexander. “My last outings were not me, and a lot of my fans and people that know me are aware of that. The 30-year-old Grayton (15-1-1, 11 Kos) is coming off a technical draw against former champion Kermit Cintron in his last fight on Mawrth 17. Grayton, Washington D.C., suffered the only loss of his career when he was stopped by technical knockout by Bryant Perrella on June 4, 2016 before returning to defeat Kareem Martin in August last year leading up to the Cintron fight.
