“BRONCO” BILLY WRIGHT: “No one can deny that I’ve earned the right to fight Deontay Wilder for his WBC title”

LAS VEGAS (December 7, 2015) – WBC Latino and FECARBOX heavyweight champion, Bronco Billy Wright (49-4, 38 KOs), is willing and able to step up and challenge Deontay Wilder (35-0, 34 KOs) for his world title.  Currently rated #20 by the WBC, Bronco Billy Wright is currently riding a 20-fight winning streak with 17 of those victories coming by way of knockout.
If Wilder, who is currently looking for an opponent for his scheduled January 16, 2016date, were to take this fight, he would be facing a game opponent in Wright, who hasn’t lost a fight since 1998.  With 31 first round knockouts to his credit, Billy feels he has what it takes to dethrone Wilder.
“No one can deny that I’ve earned the right to fight Deontay Wilder for his WBC title,” said Bronco Billy Wright. “I’ve been ranked in the top 20 with the WBC for the last three years.  This is the American Dream for a fighter like myself who’s been waiting patiently to get an opportunity to fight for a world championship. I’ve paid my dues and I’m ready to take on this challenge.”
“There is no reason why this fight shouldn’t happen,” said Wright’s agent Ivaylo Gotzev. “From the day that Billy made his comeback till now, he’s made a believer out of me with everything that he’s accomplished.  This is America where everyone should have an opportunity to fulfill their dreams, that’s what makes this country great.  The man is active having just fought last month.  Age should not be a factor. If George Foreman and Bernard Hopkins can fight at the championship level in their latter years, then the networks should not have a double standard when it comes to Bronco Billy.  He wants to raise the bar and become the oldest heavyweight champ in boxing history.  He currently holds two WBC belts which makes him more than qualified.  There should be no discrimination in this matter. LAS VEGAS (July 3, 2015) – After recording another first round knockout against late sub Esteban Hillman Tababary (25-16-2, 20 KOs) last Saturday in Bolivia, Bronco Billy Wright (48-4, 38 KOs), who defended his WBC Latino heavyweight title, looks to land a big fight before the summer ends.  Currently rated WBC #16, Bronco Billy Wright is ready for a top level opponent.

 

“Right now I’m at a stage in my career where I feel I’m ready to challenge anyone in the top 10.” said Bronco Billy Wright. “I’m knocking out guys with winning records and I’m staying active, fighting constantly.  I’m very grateful to the WBC for honoring my ranking.  They’ve sanctioned all my title defenses as I hold their FECARBOX, Latino and United States (USNBC) Silver titles. I’ve delivered on every fight by knocking everyone out that they sanctioned. My goal is to to land a big fight before the year ends and I’m counting on the WBC to honor my ranking, forcing someone in the top 15 to fight me.”

 

Adding another first round KO to his record, Bronco Billy, who hasn’t tasted defeat since 1998, is inching closer to breaking the all-time record for first round knockouts held by Shannon Briggs at 33.  Currently, Wright has 29 first round KOs.

 

“I believe if I continue to win and win impressively, someone in the top ten will take me on.” Bronco Billy Wright continued. “If not I’ll just have to keep knocking out everyone in my path till they accept my challenge. LAS VEGAS, NV (April 22, 2015) – After trekking a remarkable 500 miles from Las Vegas, Nevada to Phoenix, Arizona, 50-year heavyweight contender (WBC #17), Bronco Billy Wright (47-4, 38 KOs), has a message to send to the boxing community and the heavyweight division.

 

“I did this 500 mile “Trek for Cures”, Run, Walk and Ride to help raise money for charities that are close to my heart,” said Bronco Billy Wright. “In addition I wanted to send a message to the heavyweight division, letting everyone rated in the WBC top 15 know that I’m a serious athlete coming for their rankings. My next fight will be announced shortly, and my goal is to take out everyone in my path.  I don’t think there is a heavyweight out there that can handle my power.  I humbly want to thank the WBC Cares and everyone who supported me during this journey.

 

The trek ended at the Central Boxing Club in downtown Phoenix, where Bronco Billy was greeted by its members, which included undefeated super-lightweight Jose Benavidez Jr. (22-0, 15 KOs) among others.

 

“The fighters and coaches at the Central Boxing Club were gracious enough to let me end my trek at their gym and it was fantastic.” Bronco Billy Wright continued. “There were some local TV cameras there to talk about my story.  It was a great success and I’m ready to begin my march toward the heavyweight championship of the world.”

 

Billy currently holds the WBC LATIN AMERICAN, FECARBOX , and United States (USNBC) Silver titles.  Right now Bronco Billy is riding a 18-fight knockout streak, 14 of which came by first round KO.  With a few more first round knockouts he’ll break Shannon Briggs world record.  Look for Bronco Billy to make his return to the ring this summer.

Bronco Billy Wright's 500 Mile Trek for Cures Mission

 

LAS VEGAS, NV (April 8, 2015) – 50-year heavyweight contender (WBC #17),Bronco Billy Wright (47-4, 38 KOs), will embark on an incredible 500 mile trek from Las Vegas, through the Grand Canyon, and into the Phoenix, Arizona area.  Titled “Trek for Cures,” Bronco Billy’s goal is to raise $50,000 to continue the fight to find a cure for cancer.  In addition, he wants to send a message to the boxing world, more specifically the heavyweight division. LAS VEGAS (March 14, 2015) – Last night 50-year old WBC #16 heavyweight contender, “Bronco” Billy Wright (47-4, 38 KOs), annihilated Gilberto Matheus Domingos (22-3, 20 KOs), stopping the Brazilian with a devastating body blow at the1:15 mark of round one.  The10-round main event took place on the RJJ Boxing Promotions at the We Ko Pa Casino in Fort McDowell, Arizona.

 

With the victory, “Bronco” Billy retained his WBC LATIN AMERICAN andFECARBOX titles while extending his winning streak to 18, 14 of which came by way of knockout in consecutive bouts .

 

 

“I’m very grateful for the opportunity to defend my WBC belts here in the United States as it’s been a long time since I fought here.” said Bronco Billy Wright. “Mauricio Sulaiman has been a man of his word, moving me up the rankings as I continue to win fights.  Right now I’m a #16, looking to crack the top 15 with this victory.  Against Domingos, I wanted to make a statement and end the fight early with a knockout.  The plan was to go in and land as many powerful body shots as possible.  It worked and I came out on top.  I’m going to keep marching up the WBC rankings with the goal getting a big fight against any of top contenders.  The problem is, none of these guys want to fight me.  I’m ready to take on all comers ahead of me.”

 

In addition, Bronco Billy recorded his 29th first round knockout.  One of his goal is to break the heavyweight record for 1st round knockouts held by Shannon Briggs which stands at 35.

LAS VEGAS (March 3, 2015) – 50-year old WBC #17 heavyweight contender, “Bronco” Billy Wright (46-4, 37 KOs), is less than two weeks away from his upcoming 10-round main event bout with Gilberto Matheus Domingos (22-2, 20 KOs).  The bout takes place at the We Ko Pa Casino in Fort McDowell, Arizona on the RJJ Boxing Promotions card March 13, 2015.  Bronco Billy Wright gives his thoughts on training camp and defending his WBC LATIN AMERICAN and FECARBOX titles.

“Training camp has been tough this time around.  I’ve been working really hard to get in the best shape of my life.  My trainer Rafael Garcia Jr. has me doing some out of the box training methods that has been real beneficial to my boxing style.  We are finishing up our last days of sparring this week.  I’ll be ready to bring it next Friday.

 

Bronco Billy gives his thoughts on his bout with Domingos….

“I know Domingos is going to be looking for the knockout as am I, so we’ll see who lands the first bomb.  Like in all my fights, I’ll be looking to end the fight early.  If I need to go some extra rounds, I’m ok with that, as I’m in good boxing shape. He’s going to taste some my power, that’s for sure.

 

Bronco Billy comments on defending his WBC titles….

“Defending my WBC LATIN AMERICAN and FECARBOX titles is a pretty big deal for me.  It’s my leverage to compete at the top level as I try to crack the top ten in the WBC.  Right now I’m at #17, but I plan to move up with each fight this year.

“At this age I feel stronger then I was when I was younger.  It’s that old man strength I guess you can call it. I’m smarter, wiser and more discipline at this stage in my career.  I have a goal to become the heavyweight champion of the world and motivation is greater than ever.  A lot of these top contenders are shying away from fighting me.  I just want to earn my opportunity and fight the best.

Bronco Billy Wright – The Tale Of A 50-Year Old Contender

The man is 50 years old and has a belly that protrudes in a manner that suggests his blood pressure and cholesterol levels are in code red territory.

 

Not so, says “Bronco” Billy Wright, the most unlikely of heavyweight contenders I have come across in my decades of covering this red light district of a sport.

 

“I can hold a lemon meringue pie in one hand and a pumpkin pie in the other and still knock you out!” says the Las Vegas resident (46-4, 37 knockouts) in a recent phoner.

 

Wright, who debuted as a pro in 1986 after taking to boxing to get back in shape after breaking his back in a workplace accident, told me he’s set to glove up on March 13 at We Ko Pa Casino in Fort McDowell, AZ against Gilberto Matheus Domingos, a 22-2 (20 KOs) Brazilian.

 

It’s the first fight in the US since 2012 for Wright, who has made Bolivia his ring home away from home of late. “Fighting in America is very important,” said the boxer, rated No. 17 at heavyweight by the WBC. “This comeback is a difficult one to accept for people. I had to go abroad to get fights. Fighting here, I would have just been a club fighter and, nothing against that, but that’s not what I want.”

 

What he wants, he says, is for you simply to tune in and judge him by his merits, not his age or the fact that he has too much of a fondness for sweets. Roy Jones Jr.’s group is willing to give Wright a shot and put him on this card and he’s hoping you have an open mind as well.

 

“See for yourself! Yes, I’m 50 but it works to my advantage. I relax; I have my priorities in check. I don’t drink, don’t do the crazy stuff I did in my 20s and 30s, drinking beer, chasing skirts. No, I’m not the bodybuilder, Adonis-type people have come to expect. I’m an old-school fighter. You had, back in the ’80s, Larry Holmes, Tim Witherspoon, Tony Tubbs; I’m more like a lumberjack.
