World champion Beibut Shumenov to defend title vs. Junior Wright this Saturday night in Las Vegas

Las Vegas (Kia 18, 2016) – World mekemeke Association (WBA) Wā toa Cruiserweight World Shumenov Beibu (16-2, 10 Koó) makes his first title defense tenei Rāhoroi po (Kia 21) against WBA No. 11-Whakatauria Junior “Hurricane” Wright (15-1-1, 12 Koó) at The Chelsea inside of The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas.
I’m happy to get the opportunity to fight tenei Rāhoroi po,” Na ka mea a Shumenov, “but I wish that I could fight more often. I’ve been ready since January. Every training session I gain new knowledge. I am a completely different fighter than in my last fight.
Shumenov’s last fight was back in July, in which he defeated B.J. Flowers (31-1-1, 20 Koó) by 12-round unanimous decision in Las Vegas to capture the vacant WBA Interim title, making the former WBA light heavyweight champion Shumenov the first professional boxer from Kazakhstan to be a two-division world champion.
By becoming the WBA Interim cruiserweight champion, Shumenov also became the No. 1 ranked mandatory challenger for WBA Super cruiserweight titlist Denis Lebedev (28-2, 21 Koó), who also fights tenei Rāhoroi in Russia against International Boxing Federation (IBF) toa Victor Emilio “Tyson de Abasto” Ramirez (22-2-1, 17 Koó) in a unification match.
The WBA has already mandated that the Lebedev-Ramirez must fight Shumenovwithin 120 ra. The WBA, Heoi, has failed to explain why it also declared a WBA “te wā” cruiserweight world title fight tenei Rāmere night in France between No. 2 yunier Dorticos a No. 5 Youri Kalenga (since upgraded to No. 3), especially after announcing that it would work this year to have only one world champion in each weight class.
Shumenov, o te akoranga, is risking his mandatory position by fighting Wright, the former 5-time Chicago Golden Gloves champion. “I need to stay active,” Shumenov explained why he’s taking such a risk. “Nga whawhai, I gain experience and it also helps me develop my fighting skills.
The 12-round Shumenov vs. Wright title fight is on the non-televised portion of The Cosmopolitan show.

WBA Interim cruiserweight world champion & Mandatory challenger Beibut Shumenov protests Dorticos-Kalenga WBA “te wā” world cruiserweight title fight

Las Vegas (April 29, 2016) – World mekemeke Association (WBA) Interim cruiserweight world champion Shumenov Beibu (16-2, 10 Koó), the only Kazakhstan-native to hold world titles in two different weight classes, is disputing the WBA’s sanctioning of the WBA “te wā” cruiserweight world championship fight, Kia 20 i roto i te Paris, between two lower-ranked WBA fighters, Kaua e. 2 yunier Dorticos a No. 5 Youri Kalenga (recently upgraded to No. 3).
Last Hōngongoi, Shumenov defeated B.J. Flowers by way of a 12-round unanimous decision to become the mandatory challenger for WBA “te wā” toa cruiserweight Denis Lebedev, who was later elevated to “Super” toa.
Lebedev hasn’t fought a mandatory defense i roto i te kotahi tau, ho'i,, when he won a 12-round decision over Kalenga, who had earned his world title shot, like Shumenov, by becoming WBA Interim world champion. The WBA granted Lebedev an extension in terms of his due mandatory defense because of the Russian’s unification fight Kia 21 in Moscow against International Boxing Federation (IBF) taitara-ma'u Victor Emelio Ramirez.
I’m very disappointed the WBA is sanctioning Dorticos-Kalenga for its ‘regularcruiserweight title, when I am the No. 1 ranked and current WBA Interim champion,” Na ka mea a Shumenov. “I repeatedly informed the WBA through emails, texts and verbally that I was ready to fight back in January. I preferred to fight Lebedev but I was willing to fight Dorticos or anybody else in the top 15. For the past few months, I’ve been laboring over what I believe is a very bad decision, letting two lower-ranked fighters, te No. 2 a No. 3 eé, fight for the WBA ‘regular’ taitara. I am shocked and bewildered and do not understand the WBA’s rationale to have either of these fighters declared the WBA ‘regularchampion without first defeating either Lebedev or me, the Interim champion and No. 1 rank contender.
I appealed the decision but, so far, the WBA has done little in response to my appeals other than delay and stall before finally ruling that I will fight the Lebedev-Ramirez winner months from now, ano, ignoring my appeal to stop the regular title status of Dorticos-Kalenga and still sanction a fight between them, its No. 2 a No. 3 rated fighters, for the WBA ‘regular’ taitara. This is unfair to fans, who deserve to watch the best fighting the best, especially when a world championship is at stake! We now have this odd situation where there will be three separate WBA cruiserweight fights in May, all for a different version of WBA world title I just don’t feel anyone should get the WBA ‘regulartitle without first defeating a champion or at least the top-ranked fighter in the division. The WBA knew I was and am ready to fight. Its decision makes no sense and, i roto i toku whakaaro, diminishes the prestige and meaning of the title. I have respect for Dorticos and Kalenga but I think the legitimacy of any world title resulting from a fight between the No. 2 a No. 3 ranked contenders, when the No 1 mandatory contender who already holds the WBA Interim champion is ready and available, to say the least, is highly questionable.
The WBA told me and announced to the media that it was working to have only one world champion in each division. While I’ve been sitting out the last four months waiting to fight, the WBA has decided to allow six different guys to fight for e toru WBA cruiserweight world titles, practically on the same day, instead of crowning only one WBA cruiserweight world champion. I look forward to returning to the ring and my manager, Al HAYMON, has advised me that I will fight in May and we will announce next week. I want to thank everyone for their support and I apologize to my family, hoa, fans and my country, Katatānga, for this chaos the WBA has caused that has damaged and delayed my professional boxing career. I will move forward and continue to fight inside the ring, letting my attorneys and manager fight this unfair situation outside the ring.

I te Rāmere, te 15-1-1 Wright got a 1st round stoppage over Jim Franklin on a show in Iowa, and the boxer feels he’s building superb momentum, which will soon result in another title shot.

The fight was over so fast I couldn’t really tell you much about it,” said Wright, kata. “But I threw a really good body shot to put him down and then afterwards I just threw a lot of combinations when he got up and they stopped it. I feel great about my win. While training for my world title fight with Rakhim Chakhiev in 2015, I had an injury but still went ahead with the fight. After the match I had surgery and now I am 100 hundred percent. I feel ready for all the top cruiserweights in the world, from what I see there is not much out there to worry about in the division. I would love the opportunity to fight Beibut Shumenov for a world title. He is one of the dominant champions and his fights happen in the U.S. so I feel there is no home-turf advantage, no jet leg to worry about. I feel very confident in this fight and my abilities!”

Las Vegas (Hōngongoi 25, 2015) – Shumenov Beibu (16-2, 10 Koó) patua B.J. Flowers (31-2-1, 20 Koó) i te whakatau loto Rāhoroi night to win a cruiserweight world title on Te Pirimia mekemeke Champions i runga i NBCSN from the Pearl at Palms Casino Resort.

Shumenov came out aggressive early before using his movement late to earn a world title in a second division and become the first fighter from Kazakhstan to achieve that feat. Flores was competitive throughout the fight, countering effectively when Shumenov showed aggression while landing more power punches.

I roto i te 12th-round Flores wobbled Shumenov on the ropes in the closing seconds, but was unable to earn a knockdown. Shumenov used a strong jab and quick movements to make Flores miss consistently. All three judges scored the fight 116-112.

In a battle of undefeated rising cruiserweight contenders, Detroit o Isiah Thomas (15-0, 6 Koó) earned a hard-fought victory over Horano Shimmell (19-1, 16 Koó) in their 10-round bout.

The southpaw Thomas used his slick-style to slow down Shimmell’s offense and land lead rights to the head that left Shimmell’s right eye cut. Thomas was able to fend Shimmell off on the inside as the broader Shimmell attempted to land big punches from close quarters. Thomas won by the scores of 99-91, 98-92 a 97-93.

In further action, Dominican power-puncher Claudio Marrero (19-1, 14 Koó) delivered a vicious second round knockout over former world champion Rico Ramos (24-5, 12 Koó). Marrero connected with a strong overhand left that immediately sent Ramos to the canvas, prompting referee Jay Nady to wave off the count. The knockout came twenty seconds into the round.

The televised opener featured undefeated cruiserweight Andrew “Te kararehe” Tabiti(11-0, 10 Koó) scoring a dominant unanimous decision victory over Roberto Santos(12-2, 5 Koó). Tabiti used his length and speed to outwork and outland Santos over the eight-round fight. All three judges scored the fight 80-72.

Beibu SHUMENOV

“B.J. is a strong guy but he was lunging while I was scoring points. I’m still in the learning process and I’m more comfortable as a cruiserweight.

Boxing is an art. I used my skills, positioning, angles and footwork to win the fight.

I feel blessed, I have a strong team that is like one. Without them I wouldn’t have won the fight te po nei.

I followed the instructions from my corner and thought I won the fight clearly.

I had extra motivation to make history. I first did that when I wont the light heavyweight title in 10 fights and now I’m the first person from my country to win world titles in two different division. I’m very proud of that.

Denis Lebedev is my main target. But I want to fight all the best and most dangerous cruiserweights in the world.

B.J. OMAHA

“Beibut always comes forward, he’s very tough, but tonight he ran the whole night. It’s tough to win a fight when the guy is trying to run in circles.

“My punches were crisp and effective and I hurt him. He had nothing on his punches and never hurt me.

“I wobbled him in the twelfth round and then I went in to rush him. He kept moving back though.

“You have to want to fight. PBC is about guys wanting to fight. Ko te aha te reira katoa e pā ana ki.

“I’m ready to get back in the ring, I’m fine. It was difficult to catch up with him because he wanted to move around so much.

“I learned in those last few rounds that even though he was moving around so much, I could pick up the tempo and bring the fight to him.

“You can’t fight a guy who isn’t trying to engage. You have to fight to win the fight. He was throwing jabs while I was trying to hurt him.

I’m so thankful to all my fans who came out tonight, I wouldn’t be anywhere without them. Ka whakahokia e ahau. Beibut, I want the rematch.

Isiah THOMAS

I think I did well in there. I listened to my corner and was able to land punches.

I used my defense, my eyes and most importantly I listened to my corner. I should have thrown some more punches, but I wanted to stay on the outside and use angles.

I knew it was going to be a close fight, he came very hard and I had to be at my best. Me and my team were able to get it done.

I feel great about representing Detroit boxing. I want to carry on the legendary legacy of Kronk Gym and just keep working.

This win is huge for my career. Being on the national stage was a great experience for me.

I want to get back in the ring as soon as possible. I’m going to get back in the gym and get with my team but I’ll be back soon.

Horano SHIMMELL

I thought it was a closer fight than the judges had it. Nothing he did surprised me, Mohio ahau i haere te reira ki te waiho i te whawhai uaua.

I just have to be even more prepared. Ko ia he toa nui, I thought it was closer. But he’s a great fighter.

“Au te pai ahau, I’m going to come back.

CLAUDIO MARRERO

I trained very hard for this fight and I was just listening to the corner and we saw that the overhand was open and I connected on it.

I’ve improved a lot since my loss and I come into each fight better and better. I’m more confident in my preparation and I have a great fight plan.

I’m very excited about this victory. We worked so hard for this fight. I hope that boxing will take Dominican fighters a little more seriously. There are currently two Dominican world champions and I want to be the third.

I want to fight the best of the best. Whoever it is, Ahau rite”

ANDREW TABITI

I stayed disciplined tonight. It was a good test tonight and I’m just ready to get back to work.

I was a little disappointed I couldn’t get the knockout but I felt really good in there. Hats off to my opponent, he was tough and could really take a punch.

I hurt him in the last round and he was holding me, but he was able to stay on his feet. I’m still going to knock guys out but I wanted to show the world I have the talent to go in there and box.

I hope that I left everyone entertained and I’m going to keep on working hard and go from there.
