Former Welsh Champ Lee Churcher Returns With A Bang
Newport’s former Welsh and British Masters Champion Lee Churcher made a successful return to the ring last Saturday night, Nottingham’s Matt Scriven by a 40-35 points margin.
Churcher, who hasn’t fought since his ninth round stoppage victory over Barrie Jones that secured him the Welsh title in May 2012, almost didn’t get to fight at all, after his opponent Ratislav Frano, as well as Elimer Rafael, who was due to face Andy Bell, Julius Rafael, who was to be Matt Scriven’s opponent on the night, and their trainer all failed to make their flight from Slovakia.
With time running out promoter Wayne O’Hara initially tried to get the errant Slovakian boxers on another flight, when it was clear that wasn’t going to happen then tried in vain to locate UK based opponents.
With time fast running out Matt Scriven, who had fought Churcher back in 2010, suggested that rather than lose all three bouts off the show that he and Churcher could fight each other.
Right from the off it was clear that both protagonists were in the mood for a good old fashioned slug fest.
After some nice tidy exchanges it was Scriven that was first to let rip in anger, with a scorching body shot, Churcher responded in kind and then for the rest of the round it was pure toe-to-toe pugilistic heaven for the fans, as the pair slugged it out big time.
More of the same in both the second and third rounds, much to the delight of the crowd, who had been on their feet for virtually every second of the fight.
In the forth stanza Scriven came out of the blocks fast, intent on securing centre ring with some beautiful jabs and crisp combinations, however Churcher was in no mood to play second fiddle to anyone, coming in hard and fast throwing powerful body shots and uppercuts at every opportunity.
About half way through the round Churcher landed a peach of a right, sending Scriven to the canvas. Scriven recovered before the count concluded and boxed smart, as Churcher went all out to finish off the Nottingham man.
At the end of four scintillating all action rounds, referee Lee Murtagh scored the bout 40-35 in favour of Churcher.
Prior to the excellent Churcher-Scriven bout, there were five top class exhibition bouts, featuring some of the young guns from Nottingham’s Robin Hood Gym.
These bouts gave the crowd an early peek at some of the future stars that are destined to follow in the footsteps of Nottingham’s most famous boxing star, Mr. Carl Froch.
The first of the bouts featured Robin Hood’s Jack Whitehouse against Will Smith from Leeds.
What a cracking closely fought fight, both boxed beautifully throughout, but at the end of the bout it was Whitehouse whose hand was held aloft in victory.
Following the excellent Whitehouse-Smith battle see Carl Coulthard in action against another local lad Aaron Stark.
Both lads went hammer and tongs for virtually the whole two rounds, but with just about twenty seconds of the second round to go Stark landed a peach of right hand to send Couthard to the canvas, unfortunately Coulthard tried to get to his feet but just failed to make the count.
Next up see Connor Riddick take the victory laurels against another local lad Dan McCreedy.
Right from the off it was clear Riddick wasn’t interested in anything but a good win, letting rip with big rights and lightning quick double handed flurries.
About midway through the bout McCreedy clicked it up a notch, in doing so played straight into to Riddick’s hands, as he was well up for an old fashioned slug fest and ultimately produced the second win of the night for the Robin Hood Gym crew.
The fourth bout of the night was a sensational all action battle royale between Tom Mulligan and Peterborough’s Dominic Masses.
The first round was very much a fifty/fifty round, with both protagonists more than happy to box at a fast pace, however saying that Mulligan shook Masses a couple of times with some pin point accurate exocets.
Round two see Masses in the ascendance, however even though the Peterborough man was backing Mulligan up for a good part of the fight it was the Nottingham man that secured the round, after sending Masses to the deck twice.
With blood pouring from his nose and on unsteady legs nobody would have been surprised if Masses decided not to come out for the third, but he did and as before took the fight to the Nottingham man.
For about two thirds of the round it looked like Masses would turn the tables on Mulligan, having shook the Nottingham man with some big right hands, however it wasn’t to be as Mulligan managed to settle himself after yet another barrage of shots and land a seriously hard right to the head, that sent Masses to the deck once more.
Before Masses had even landed on the canvas his corner had decided enough was enough and quite rightly threw the towel in.
The final exhibition bout was yet another stormer, this time featuring the highly exciting Tom Langley taking on Portsmouth’s Jules Phillips in a four round Super Bantamweight contest.
What a fight, without doubt both lads have a good future in the sport, especially young Tommy Langley, who boxed with a maturity that belied his tender years, keeping his distance nicely and just stepping in whenever he liked to land a cracking right or a tidy combination.
After four fantastic rounds it came as no surprise that it was Langley whose hand was raised in victory, most deservedly in my eyes.
Tom Langley is one seriously talented young man, boy oh boy can this kid box, definitely one to watch in the future, word is the eighteen year old is going to be turning pro this year, I for one look forward to him boxing on the pro circuit, yog tseeb.
With so much drama preceding the event who could have expected that the show would have gone so well and whilst there was only one pro bout in the end, nobody moaned or asked for their money back, how could they, it really was a good night of boxing.

Warriors Boxing proudly announces the signing of Argentinean super welterweight contender Dario “El Gallo” Pucheta (20-2, 11 KOs) to a promotional contract. 28-year-old Pucheta went 102-8 as an amateur in Buenos Aires. Robert Guerrero – I’m ready to bring another exciting night of action
LAS VEGAS, NV (Lub peb hlis ntuj 11, 2015) – A few days after his inspiring effort against WBA Welterweight Champion, Keith Thurman (25-0, 21 KOs), Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero is already looking forward to his next fight. The Fighting Irish: Tolan Set For Townley Title Showdown In Belfast This Saturday
Belfast boxers Tommy ‘The Tiger’ Tolan and Philip Townley are set to go toe to toe with each other, for the vacant Irish International Professional Middleweight title, at the Devenish Complex in Belfast this coming Saturday, Lub peb hlis ntuj 14th.
The transformation of Tolan’s career over the past year has been astonishing, following a string of losses going back to 2011 his career began to turn around late in 2014, when he beat Matt Scriven in Leeds.
In February this year Tolan returned to Leeds to secure another excellent win, this time over Slovakia’s Rastislav Frano, who at that time was coming of two big wins himself.
Speaking from his home earlier Tolan said.
“I’m really looking forward to Saturday, It’s going to be a great night.
It’s been two years since I last fought here in Belfast so I’m really up for fighting in front of a home crowd again and hopefully I’ll bring home the belt to really celebrate St Patrick’s Day in style.”
Supporting the all Belfast headline bout sees another local lad Eamonn Magee Jnr, the son of the former Commonwealth and World Boxing Union World Champion of the same name, making his second pro outing against Slovakia’s Dinars Skripkins.
Magee comes into the fight high in confidence, following his sensational second round stoppage win over Zoltan Horvath on his debut back in June.
In taking that victory, Magee Jnr proved to be a proper ‘chip of the old block’, the youngster boxed beautifully throughout, but more importantly finished off his more experienced opponent with a world class left hook, in much of a similar manner as his famous father had done on so many occasions during his illustrious career.
Former amateur star Matthew Fitzsimmons, will be making his pro debut on the show, against Slovakian Aleksandrs Birkenbergs.
Fitzsimmons had a stellar amateur career, winning forty seven of his fifty one outings, and the smart money is on the youngster being yet another star of the future to emerge from the famous All Saints club.
In addition to the bouts above, there will further bouts featuring local fighters.

Johnson, of North Platte, Neb., is an American Kickboxing Academy product who returns to the Bellator MMA cage for the first time since a 2011 victory over Derrick Lewis. Including a pair of appearances fighting overseas in Maylasia and the Philippines, Johnson is currently 4-1 in his past five contests, most recently needing just 81 seconds to score a TKO win over Robert Neal. Johnson also owns a win over former UFC heavyweight champion Tim Sylvia.
Meanwhile, 26-year-old Russian slugger Volkov, a Moscow native, has earned 17 of his 24 career victories through strikes. An incredible 15-1 in his past 16 appearances, Volkov’s only loss in that span came in a 25-minute matchup with current Bellator MMA Heavyweight World Champion Vitaly Minakov. Aiming for another shot at that belt, Volkov appears primed for a breakout performance.
At just 24 years old, Guerreiro, of Santana, Amapa, Brazil, already boasts 20 career victories, 17 of which have come by way of stoppage. With Bellator MMA wins over Shahbulat Shamhalaev and Desmond Green already under his belt, Guerreiro makes his fourth Bellator MMA appearance.
Meanwhile, Teixeira is a 28-year-old who hails from just 12 miles away from his opponent, growing up in Macapa, Amapa, Brazil. With just one loss in a 20-fight career that dates back to 2007, Teixeira was victorious in his Bellator MMA debut and now looks to defeat a cross-state rival on an international stage.
Brazilian-born Luciano now lives in Huntington Beach, Calif., where he serves as a jiu-jitsu instructor in his own academy. A Royler Gracie black belt since he was 19 years old, Luciano has started to focus more on MMA in recent years and is an impressive 10-2 in his past 12 appearances, with seven submission wins in that span. He’ll face Miller, of Hacienda Heights, Calif., who returns to action following 16 months on the sidelines after a submission loss to Michael Guymon. Prior to the result, Miller had boasted a five-fight winning streak.
George, of Los Angeles, Calif., is nearing 10 years in the sport but now makes his Bellator MMA debut. While George has never been knocked out in 23 professional contests, he has been tapped out in six of his eight career losses. He now faces Vorgeas, of Laguna Hills, Calif., who owns four of his five career victories by tapout.
Bondole is originally from Portland, Maine, but now makes his home in Huntington Beach, Calif., where he trains with Kings MMA. Bondole seeks revenge after suffering his first career loss in his Bellator MMA debut. He now meets Jones, of Riverside, Calif., who fights for the first time under the Bellator MMA banner. Jones has never fought to a judges’ decision in his eight career contests to date.
Mercurio, of Huntington Beach, Calif., seeks his first victory under the Bellator MMA banner. He meets crosstown rival Parker, who has yet to fight to a judges’ decision in his first five appearances.

Ireland’s Stevie Quinn Jr. Challenges For WBU Youth World Title In New Jersey This Saturday
This coming Saturday, Lub peb hlis ntuj 14th, Ireland’s Stevie ‘The Quiet Man’ Quinn Jr. will be challenging for his first Championship accolade, when he takes on Jonesboro’s Stephon McIntyre, for the World Boxing Union (WBU) Youth Super Bantamweight title on the Global Boxing Promotions and LGM Promotions co promoted FISTS OF THE FIGHTING IRISH event at Jersey City Armory.
Should he be successful in his quest Rau hnub Saturday, Quinn Jr. would have not just the one reason to celebrate, but three, as this will be the first time the 22 year old from Newtownards, Northern Ireland, fights in America and of course as Irishmen the World over know it’s also St Patrick’s day.
FISTS OF THE FIGHTING IRISH has an international flavor, and not just because of Quinn Jr’s attendance, but the huge undercard also features two of JAY Z’s RocNations prospects will be on the card – China’s Olympic Gold Medalist Wang Zhimin and Chinese Heavyweight Zhang Zhilei – as well as Dominican Republic’s Wellington Ramero, who makes his seventh pro outing.

RENO’S OSCAR VASQUEZ RETURNS TO THE RING SATURDAY
MARCH 10th, RENO — Reno’s Jr. Flyweight prospect Oscar Vasquez (7-1, 1 KO) is scheduled to fight hnub Saturday no in Las Vegas.
Presented by Pochiro Promotions and RHP, “Showdown at Sam’s Town 3” will once again feature a night of world class professional boxing at Sam’s Town resort. In a Jr. Flyweight six-round scrap, Vasquez is set to face Cesar Sustaita (3-1, 3 KOs) of Chihuahua, Mexico.
Vasquez has put together quite the winning streak over the past two years. A win Rau hnub Saturday would further his campaign in the Jr. Flyweight division. He held training camp in Los Angeles, CA with trainer Nico Robledo.

(Lub peb hlis ntuj 10, 2015) – A Mike Richman injury has delayed a highly anticipated bantamweight matchup with former Bellator MMA World Champion Eduardo Dantas at this month’s “Bellator MMA: Warren vs. Galvao” event. However, Bellator MMA officials have promoted a previously announced gem from the preliminary card, as a 135-pound contest between L.C. Davis
(22-6) vs. Hideo Tokoro (32-27) will now take center stage as the co-main event on the evening’s Spike TV-televised main card.
Dantas (16-4) vs. Richman (18-5) will be rescheduled at a later date.
