Meet Tomas Yu WMMAA Vice President

MONTE CARLO, Monacó (Feabhra 25, 2016)- Cumann MMA Domhanda (WMMAA) vice president Tomas Yu, de Albuquerque (NM), who is also president of the WMMAA Pan-American division, took time from his busy schedule to address questions about his MMA background and experience, the sport of MMA and WWMMA in particular.
Can you tell us about you and your experience in Martial Arts?
TY: “I’m from the generation that grew up watching 3 Ninjas,Ninja TurtlesI wanted to be a Ninja! I grew up practicing Tae Kwon Do in Mexico, all the way to my black belt. At age 18, I ventured to practice Aikido and Judo in El Paso, Texas. I loved learning and I always wanted to be a rounded student, which is why I always looked for different arts to offset the weaknesses of the other.
How did you first enter the world of MMA?
TY: “I was really looking for a place I could introduce my daughter to Martial Arts. I was looking for a more rounded self-defense Martial Art but not a fight club. I was introduced to the sport of MMA by a good friend and pioneer of the sport, Chris Luttrell. I was immediately bonded to the sport, since that is what at one point all Martial Artists are looking for.
When did you first hear of MMA and what was your first impression? Did
you expect this sport to grow as much as it is now?

TY: “I have been privileged to see the evolution of MMA since 1993 as a teenager, all the way to now, becoming the first Pan-American Division President in the most important Regulation Organization for MMA in the world.
What is your function and main activities within WMMAA?
TYMy biggest function is to introduce simple business principles to the sport of MMA and keeping Martial Art in MMA. What I mean by that is, the common denominator for every individual Marital Art are (Respect, Loyalty, Honor) and the mixture of martial arts should not represent what people perceive MMA is today. It should be a mixture of Respect, Loyalty and Honor. It should be a much more admired sport.
How would you assess WMMAA’s progress during its three year existence?
TY: “Bhuel, as an entrepreneur, I’m never satisfied, I always see ways to do things better but the reality is that, sa 25+ years MMA has been evolving and becoming not just a mixture of Martial Arts but also a true blue sport. Many people have tried to add value to the sport with no real success until this past two years with the WMMAA.
What are the main goals of WMMAA and what are the main obstacles for the association?
TY: “This question has a long and complicated answer! The number one obstacle is pride, pride to admit that past performance or formulas to add value didn’t and won’t work. Pride to admit that working together will pave a new path. The number two obstacle, is UNDERSTANDING, understanding the big picture, like Micro and Macro economics really being two different worlds.
The sport or art of MMA is much more than what we see on television. There is a much deeper impact to society than pay per view.
How do you assess the third World Championship that took place in
Prague?
TY: “Moments like these are the ones that 3 years ago we would dream about. Bhuel, last year that dream came true… níos mó 40 countries participated in the beautiful city of Prague. I can’t explain the clash of emotions when you see and hear country after country being announced as they walk into the arena with their head held high as they carry their national flag.
We as an organization created Continental Presidents to be able to perform better follow through and also be more sensitive negotiating in different cultural environments. Our Europe and Czech Organizing Committee did a wonderful job.
Were there any countries that stood out or surprised you?
TY: “The fact they were there, that’s what really stands out! Some countries were participating for the first time. The level of mental competition for some countries was amazing. I can’t wait for the 2016 World Championships.
What are the2016 mid-term goals for WMMAA PanAm?
TY: “The number one focus for PANAM is the roll-out of our new initiative on ‘Global MMA Officials and Licensingto standardize the sport worldwide, but also standardize the officials looking out for the sport.
Can you describe what 2015 was like for WMMAA?
TY: “2015 was a year of foundations, recruiting, and preparing for the volumes of growth coming our way this year.
What words of wisdom would you like to share with the members of WMMAA family?
TY: “I have always said that in every sport there is a business behind it, chreidiúint: ‘Till this far, MMA is like Capitalit goes where it is welcomed and it stays where it’s treated well'
WMMAA keeps expanding. However there are still multiple countries that
are not yet WMMAA members. Why should any local Federation apply
for WMMAA membership?
TY: “We are the only organization of its kind. They would be able to get courses, national and international licenses but, rud is tábhachtaí, they can be part of history by allowing athletes in their respective countries to participate in our version of the Olympics of MMA.
What would you tell them?
TY: “You are not alone. Here is where being part of a team with qualified individuals opening door. Power really does come in numbers.

People keep asking: why should we use SportID and SportData. Can you
repeat why it is so essential?

TY: “I’ll keep it short. The number one reasonreason enoughis to avoid private owned companies from having biased control on who and how they upload information.

Seo an méid a bhí ar an trodaithe a rá Dé Céadaoin:
KIKO MARTINEZ
I’m very happy to have Robert Garcia in my corner. He has led so many fighters to world titles. I’m excited and I’m anxious to get things going. I’m ready to collaborate and I think we’ll do great things Dé Sathairn.
The people who doubt that I will take this title only make me stronger and more dangerous.
Training camp has been extremely tough with lots of demands due to facing a champion like Leo Santa Cruz because he’s an excellent boxer who I admire. I have completely devoted myself to training for this fight.
Ar an Satharn everyone will get to see the best Kiko Martinez. I am going to be bringing the pressure and giving you all a great fight with power punches to disarm Santa Cruz and take the title.
I hope that fans will change their mindset of seeing me as the underdog and support me because I am here to show something else.
I am very happy to be here and have the opportunity to fight in the United States again.
I love this California weather, it reminds me of the weather of El Canario where I was training and I am feeling great.
“Tá mé réidh. Now all there is left is to wait. We’ve got the weigh-in ahead of us and I’ve already made weight. I will be working up a sweat just to remain active and distracted because I am ready to jump in the ring and start the best fight of my life.
I have won a world title in the United States and became a world champ here and I am expecting to become the world champ here once again. That fight was how I became known here, now this fight will be the biggest fight of my career.
I’ve been studying [Santa Cruz] for quite some time now, since I’ve been waiting to fight him previously, now it has come to this point in this time of my life. I have grown and learned so much since then that I truly feel that I have learned from my mistakes and grown to the best of my life yet.
Luckily [trainer Gabriel Sarmiento] has been training me up until this point. We’re on the same team and we have each other’s backs and he is still fully supportive. I have him in my heart and I know that he will be supporting me all the way.
I am not worried about what anyone is saying. All I want is to get in the ring comeDé Sathairn and demonstrate that Leo and I will put on a huge fight and the audience will not be bored for a single minute.
JULIO CEJA
We have had a long and very intense camp. We are prepared and know what is on the line here because we know that Hugo comes at it with everything he’s got. This is a prestigious opportunity that I have been presented with and we can forecast that it will be an all-or-nothing fight.
This will be a toe-to-toe fight because we both know each other’s strengths and having fought before we know this rematch will be explosive.
From the second we knew there would be a rematch, we immediately started training. We knew going in to this again that it will be a tough fight and this one will be better than the first. It will be more dangerous and more of a fight than the last because of what the rematch represents.
I have trained very hard because I know what is on the line and I am not going to allow Ruiz to take that title from be so easily. It is going to be an all-out battle.
Hugo has reach and height on me but all I know is that once I hear that bell, none of that matters. There’s a reason why they call me the champ and I am confident in my skill to show that.
I am looking to show up and give the fans an entertaining show. I will be looking for a fight all throughout and keep it exciting for the fans who are coming out to see a good fight.
I devoted my life to becoming the champion and my life dream was always to be a champ, so this is something that I will fight to the end for.
I became a champ here in the United States and now that I am blessed with the opportunity to get a rematch here. I’m ready to take full advantage of this chance to give it 100 percent.
GERALD WASHINGTON
I grew up boxing and boxing was always my passion as a kid. I used to go to the local Boys & Girls Club as a kid and I’ve been in love with it since. It’s always been a part of me and I’m glad I can do it again and take over this division.
There are lot’s similarities in football and boxing. You watch film, break your opponent down. We take everything from sparring and practice and take them out to the game.
“Tá sé seo ag dul a bheith ina troid iontach. It’s always a good battle when you have two undefeated fighters. It’s going to be a night full of action. I look forward to the action. I love stepping up and facing top-flight competition.
Rivas has an extensive amateur background. Tá sé ina mór, strong guy who likes the knockout. He’s going to go for it. I’m prepared for a fight like that. I know the pressure is coming. We’ve worked hard since my last fight.
The jab is the key for everything. It opens up all the other shots and keeps the opponent off balance. I’m going to hammer him with it. It’s a major tool.
It’s a great honor to be fighting here in Los Angeles. My whole life has taken place in this state and everyone who has supported me is coming together ar an Satharn to see it all in action.
Heavyweight boxing is always exciting. We’re the hardest hitters in the game. I can’t wait to show everyone the hard work I’ve put in and give a great performance.
I’m going to be smart and disciplined in the ring. But you also have to have a strong will and have the determination to keep moving forward. You have to step to the guy and apply the pressure.
My height and reach is always to my advantage but it’s not that. It’s the legs, the mind, the combinations. It’s everything.
You will see a smart and aggressive style from me ar an Satharn and I’m going to take that into the next level of my career.

MÁRTA 12 BOXING EVENT CANCELLATION NOTICE

NUA-EABHRAC (Feabhra. 24, 2016)—After extensive discussions between DiBella Entertainment, Showtime Networks and Mohegan Sun, an Márta 12 boxing event has been canceled.

Following the injury to Keith Thurman and the postponement of the Thurman vs. Porter bout, we evaluated several options for salvaging the card, but various factors, including scheduling and programming issues, prevented the parties involved from doing so.

The featherweight bout between fellow three-division world champions Abner Mares and Fernando Montiel will remain paired with the Thurman vs. Porter welterweight world championship event, which is being rescheduled for a later date on CBS. The other bouts on the card will be rescheduled on a date or dates to be announced.

Every effort was made to move forward with the remainder of this excellent card, despite the tight time frame,” Dúirt Lou DiBella, Uachtarán na DiBella Siamsaíocht. “Mar sin féin, scheduling conflicts and other factors forced us to make the unfortunate decision to cancel the entire event. There are a number of attractive fights on the table and we look forward to presenting all of them to the fans as soon as possible.

Tickets purchased for the Márta 12 event will be refunded at the point of purchase.

Bainfidh mé úsáid as mo thaithí ar fad chun bosca amach, forluí agus gunna alla Scott Quigg.

“Tá muid sa tóir ar na buachaillí seo le blianta anuas. Níor theastaigh uathu é, deireadh an scéil. Ansin níor ghlac sé ach feidhmíocht amháin faoi bhun par uaimse chun a chur ina luí ar a fhoireann gur cheart dóibh an troid a dhéanamh ar deireadh. Más é an chéad bhabhta sin sa troid dheireanach a bhfuil siad ag iarraidh bua a fháil, beidh Scott i do chluiche mór., turraing mhór.

“Bhí an campa traenála is fearr de mo ghairm bheatha agam, Táim i gcruth mo shaoil agus beidh mé i mo Chraobhchomórtas Domhanda Super Bantamweight aontaithe.

“Ar an gcéad dul síos táim á dhéanamh seo do mo theaghlach. Tá beirt pháistí álainn agam agus an bheirt Christine (Frampton) agus ba mhaith liom an chuid is fearr dóibh, is é sin a thiomáineann mé agus a chuireann béim chomh mór orm ar a bheith ar an duine is fearr ar domhan.

“Tá mé 100 faoin gcéad atá tiomnaithe do spórt na dornálaíochta, Caithim dhá sheachtain déag i gcampa traenála i Londain as baile, gan dul abhaile ach dornán uaireanta agus déanaim é seo ionas gur féidir liom a bheith chomh maith agus is féidir liom.

“Tá sé ráite ag daoine gur cosúil le meaisín traenacha Quigg. Is féidir liom a rá leat go bhfuil mé ag traenáil chomh dian céanna mura bhfuil sé níos deacra, ach ní meaisín mé. Ní gá dom a bheith cláraithe le feidhmiú.

“Seán (McGuigan) is cóitseálaí iontach, Bhí mé á rá ar feadh i bhfad. Ach anois tá daoine ina suí agus ag tabhairt faoi deara. Oibríonn Shane agus mé féin go dian ar thaicticí agus ar theicnící agus muid ag druidim le gach troid, ach tá a fhios againn araon más gá tactics a athrú i lár na troid is féidir liom smaoineamh ar mo bhealach trí chomórtas. Ní féidir le Scott Quigg.”

SCOTT QUIGG:

“Is é seo an t-am iontach anois don troid seo. Is seaimpíní an domhain sinn beirt, táimid beirt gan sárú, agus creidim gurb é seo an t-am iontach dom dul amach ansin agus jab a dhéanamh air.

“Is troid é atá uaim le fada an lá. Is troid é atá ar siúl le fada an lá. Nuair a shínigh Carl ar an líne phonc, bhí mé céim níos gaire do gach rud a d’oibrigh mé a bhaint amach; ag éirí is fearr.

“Bhí mé i gcónaí ag iarraidh an deis a chruthú gur mé an duine is fearr. Anois tá an troid déanta, Táim aon mhilliún faoin gcéad muiníneach go mbeidh an bua agam ar bhealach iontach. Is féidir liom a bhuachan ar phointí, ach bainfidh mé Carl Frampton amach.

“Ní raibh aon duine ag súil go n-éireodh liom Kiko as sin go luath. Dá gcuirfinn stop leis go déanach nó má bhuaigh mé ar phointí, ansin bhí sin déanta cheana féin ag Carl, mar sin an t-aon bhealach a d'fhéadfainn creidiúint a fháil nó a thaispeáint do dhaoine cad atá mé in ann ná KO dó go luath.

“Le Carl agus a fheidhmíocht sna Stáit, phioc siad de láimh (Alejandro) Gonzalez ó liosta de na opponents mar cheap siad go mbeadh sé an ceann is éasca. Theastaigh uathu dul thall ansin agus breathnú go maith ina U.S. tús ionas go mbeadh na Meiriceánaigh go mór faoi - agus ba bheag nár éirigh leis.

“Tá meas againn ar a chéile mar throdaithe. Ní éiríonn tú i do churaidh domhanda de sheans, tá a lán obair chrua agus neart tallainne i gceist. Ach tá siad i do turraing mar go gceapann siad nach féidir liom troid ach bealach amháin. Ní dóigh leo nach bhfuil mé in ann oiriúnú agus tiocfaidh mé ar aghaidh ag siúl. B'fhéidir go ndéanfaidh mé sin, ach má thagann mé ar aghaidh steaming, is mar tá mé chun KO dó.

“Tá daoine ag rá anois toisc go raibh mé ag cnagadh guys amach go luath go leor go raibh mé ag dul amach le haghaidh na stadanna, ach ní mar sin atá an scéal. Tá mé ag dul amach agus bhí mé ag dornálaíocht.

“Má thuirlingím glan ar shármheáchan bantam nó ar aon mheáchain cleite ar domhan, Cnagfaidh mé amach iad. Mar sin,, ní mór dom a chinntiú go roghnóidh mé an t-am ceart agus go n-osclóidh mé na bearnaí. Agus nuair a bheidh na bearnaí ann ansin tógfaidh mé iad.

“Ní thugaim aon aird an bhfuil an slua taobh thiar díom nó an bhfuil sé taobh thiar de mo chéile comhraic, ach tá a fhios agam le fírinne go nglacann sé compord as a lán tacaíochta a bheith aige. Nuair a bhaintear as sin é, léiríonn sé a leochaileachtaí. Sílim go gcuirfidh sé sin isteach air.

“Tá na hÉireannaigh thar a bheith paiseanta faoin spórt agus tá a fhios acu a gcuid dornálaíocht istigh. Faigheann siad taobh thiar dá bhfear agus cruthóidh siad atmaisféar iontach. Beidh an t-atmaisféar ag dul in olcas níos mó mar go bhfuil muid beirt ag barr ár gcluiche agus tá go leor marcaíocht air seo. Tá go leor mórtais i gceist – beidh sé leictreach.”

“Chuaigh mé isteach sa dornálaíocht le bheith mar chraobh dhomhanda. Tá sé sin déanta agam agus anois tá spriocanna nua socraithe agam chun airde níos airde a bhaint amach mar ba mhaith liom dúshlán a thabhairt dom féin gach lá.

“Tháinig Ricky Hatton ina réalta thar na bearta agus bhí an-tóir air sna Stáit Aontaithe. Thóg sé 40,000 Brits go Las Vegas agus tháinig chun bheith ina réalta domhanda. Sin an chéad sprioc eile atá leagtha amach agam dom féin agus is féidir liom é a bhaint amach má fhanaim ag obair go dian, coinnigh mo thiomantas agus mo fhócas.

“Tá an troid seo á fháil anois ar SHOWTIME sna SA. Is é an chéad chéim. Rachaidh mé amach agus déanfaidh mé jab ar Carl, buachan ar bhealach iontach agus cuirfidh sé sin borradh faoi mo phróifíl sna S.A.

“Níl mé chun an crios WBA a thabhairt suas. Ba mhaith liom dul i ngleic leis an chuid is fearr. Is é Guillermo Rigondeaux an chéad cheann eile mar is é sin a d’ordaigh an WBA.

“Tá mo dhírigh ar Carl a bhualadh. Breathnóimid ar an troid is fearr amuigh ansin. Dúirt mé i gcónaí, ‘Tá mé amuigh ag troid leis na cinn is fearr agus an chuid is fearr a bhualadh.’ Mar sin, Is léir go mbeidh mé ag troid le Rigondeaux. Níl faitíos orm troid leis. Nílim ag faitíos ón dúshlán. Tá rath orm ar an gcineál sin tasc agus ag troid i Rigondeaux - atá rangaithe mar Uimh. 1 sa rannán mar gheall ar a bhfuil bainte amach aige – dúshlán ollmhór a bheadh ann. Creidim go hionraic má thagann an t-am agus muid ag troid, Is féidir liom é a bhualadh.”

SHANE McGuigan, Traenálaí Frampton ar:

“Tá go leor díospóireachta ar siúl faoi cé a bhuaileann níos deacra idir Frampton agus Quigg. Tá a fhios agam gurb é Carl Frampton an Sár-mheáchan bantam is deacra ar domhan.

“Rud amháin nach féidir leat a mhaíomh ná cé a bhfuil an pedigree is fearr aige agus cé aige a bhfuil an inchinn dornálaíochta is fearr. Tá lámh ag Carl sa dá roinn agus tá sé chun é seo a thaispeáint ar bhealach brúidiúil agus cliniciúil.

“Is féidir le Carl bosca den chos cúil, is féidir leis troid ar an gcos tosaigh agus tá cumhacht uafásach aon-phunc aige.”

BARRY McGuigan, Tionscnóir Frampton:

“Bíonn Carl chomh fionnuar i gcónaí nuair a bhíonn an teas air, céimeanna sé suas go dtí an pláta agus seachadann.

“Fiú sa troid dheireanach a rinne sé nuair nach raibh tús iontach aige, D’éirigh le Carl fós é féin a tharraingt le chéile agus an méid a bhí ag teastáil a dhéanamh chun an bua a fháil.

“Is buaiteoir nádúrtha é. Bhí orm a bheith ag obair go dian díreach le bheith in ann dul san iomaíocht ag leibhéal domhanda. Is dóigh liom gur féidir an rud céanna a rá faoi Scott Quigg, ach do Carl tagann sé níos nádúrtha. Déan é seo a chomhcheangal lena eitic oibre dochreidte agus sin an fáth a bhfuil Carl Frampton ar an duine is fearr ar domhan.”
