The 30-year-old Russell (29-1, 17 Kos), who was born in Washington, D.C. and now lives in Capitol Heights, Maryland, will make the fourth defense of his featherweight world title on May 18 and his second career appearance at Barclays Center. Russell won his title by knocking out Jhonny Gonzalez in 2015. After stopping Patrick Hyland and Oscar Escandon, he most recently defeated previously unbeaten Joseph Diaz Jr. last May. Russell, who is trained by his father, Gary, Sr, is part of a boxing family. Two of his younger brothers, Gary Antonio and Gary Antuanne, are currently unbeaten professionals.

The 33-year-old is unbeaten in his last four contests, including most recently defeating Marc Vidal for a European featherweight title in October.

The undefeated Heraldez(16-0, 10 Kos) continued to rise up the rankings in 2019 when he knocked out Eddie Ramirez in their February showdown. The 28-year-old from Las Vegas earned a decision victory over Kevin Watts and a stoppage of Maynard Allison in 2018. That followed up a unanimous decision victory over then unbeaten prospect Jose Miguel Borrego in his first 10-round bout in August 2017 on the Mayweather vs. McGregor undercard.
“I’m one of the best super lightweights in the world and I’m going to show it again on May 18,” said Heraldez. “They keep lining them up and I’ll keep knocking them down. Mendez is good, veteran opposition, but I’m going to show I’m on a different level. This is a great opportunity to once again perform on a big stage and I’m going to take full advantage and steal the show.”
Mendez (25-5-2, 12 Kos) most recently fought to a competitive split-draw against Anthony Peterson in March, running his unbeaten streak up to three fights. The 32-year-old defeated Eddie Ramirez and Ivan Redkach in back-to-back fights after losses to Robert Easter Jr. and Luke Campbell. Originally from San Juan de la Maguana, Dominican Republic and now living in Brooklyn, N.Y., Mendez won the IBF super featherweight title with a knockout victory over Juan Carlos Salgado in 2013.
“This fight is do or die for me to become champion again,” said Mendez. “Anthony Peterson ran from me in our fight in March, so if Heraldez does that on May 18, I will be better prepared. If he stands and fights with me, I feel strongly that I will dominate him and make a statement to everyone that I’m an elite 140-pound fighter.”

After losing for the first time in his pro career in a 140-pound title fight against Kiryl Relikh last March, Barthelemy rebounded to stop Robert Frankel in December as he prepared to return to the lightweight division to face Easter. Since the loss to Relikh, Barthelemy made fellow Cuban and former world champion Joel Casamayor head trainer as he looks to return to the championship ranks.
Here is what Barthelemy had to say from training camp at Prince Ranch Bones Adams Boxing Gym in Las Vegas:
How has training camp gone so far?
“Everything has been going well under the guidance of Joel Casamayor and the assistance of my brother Yan Barthelemy and Oscar Vasquez. We have been training twice a day and sparring three to four times a week against solid guys like former world champion and ex-opponent Mickey Bey. Like they say, ‘iron sharpens iron’ and the quality of sparring has been tremendous help in getting me ready for April 27. I feel better prepared both mentally and physically than I did in my most recent fights.”
What do you make of Robert Easter Jr. and what do you know about him?
“I have seen various Robert Easter Jr fights and have been studying him very closely. He’s a great boxer who likes to use his height and reach to his advantage. He’s an ex-world champion who has fought quality opponents. He deserves all of my respect but we are very confident that we will be victorious against him.”
Do you feel you have been able to rebound from your first career defeat?
“Absolut, I have been able to move on and use that defeat as a lesson in my career. They say sometimes we learn more in defeat than we do in victories and that was the case in that fight.
“Sometimes we do not see clearly when we are winning. Bad habits or little details that need correction are overlooked when you are winning. Sometimes we do not even see them. I feel rejuvenated and we have made many important changes that were necessary for my career. You will see on April 27 that there is still much more left from Team Barthelemy.”
What would it mean to become a champion again on April 27?
“We have no doubt that we’ll become champion again for a third time on April 27. This will bring my name back at the top of the sport with many potential big fights to be made. It will mean so much more to me because Cuban boxing has currently gone through a rough patch and this victory will allow Cuba to have a champion once again.”
Any final message to your fans before your fight?
“Please make sure to tune in on April 27. This fight will be very competitive, with two evenly-skilled former world champions looking to reclaim their status at the top of the sport. Fights like this are what make boxing great. Cuba will have a champion once again on April 27!”

ATLANTIC CITY(April 13, 2019) - Claressa Shields är den obestridda mästare i mellanvikt i världen. Christina Hammer (24-0, 11 Kos), who owned the WBO belt entering the fight, had her jab largely neutralized and her defense exploited from start to finish. Shields landed a remarkable 44% of her power punches and landed on 112 total punches compared to just 49 for Hammer. As impressive as her offense was, Shields’ defense and head movement was immaculate as Hammer was able to connect on just 13% of her total punches, 11% of her jabs and 18% of her power shots.
Speaking to SHOWTIME’s Hall of Fame analyst Steve Farhood following the historic night for women’s boxing, the outspoken and emotional Shields held nothing back.
“I am the greatest woman of all time,”Sa Shields, who nearly earned a stoppage during a barrage in the closing moments of the eighth round. “I did it. She didn’t win a single round. I almost knocked her out. I swear I feel like I’m dreaming right now. Thanks to Christina Hammer and her team. They said she had a hard jab and they weren’t lying. Her jab is off the chain.
“I was just calculating in the first round and after that I started picking her apart,” she continued. “I knew I could hurt her. I thought I finished her in round eight. I thought the fight should have been stopped. She was holding onto me. I just told myself, stay cool, stay cool. I was trying to get the perfect punch to get her out of there.”
Fresh off the biggest win of her professional career, the newly-crowned undisputed champion of the world already has her sights set on another opponent.
“Women’s boxing, we’re on fire. I cannot wait to see the next super fight. Give me Cecilia Brækhus at 154 pounds. That’s who I want next. Either her or Savannah Marshall.”
“I didn’t fight very good or fast,” said a subdued Hammer. “That’s boxing, anything can happen. I wanted this fight. She won, respect to her. She’s a tough, strong woman and that’s all I can say.
“She’s fast, she comes forward. She has fast hands. I couldn’t land my jab as good as I expected. I’ll come back and I’ll be back stronger.”

I co-featured bout, Jermaine Franklin (18-0, 13 Kos), widely regarded as the top American heavyweight prospect, kept his unbeaten record intact with a 10-round unanimous decision over former No. 1-rang U.S.. amatör Rydell Booker (25-2, 12 Kos). The judges scored the fight 99-91 och 98-91 två gånger.
The 25-year-old Franklin dictated the tempo throughout and was far more active and aggressive than his 38-year-old counterpart. Booker had his moments, particularly in the early rounds when he landed several flush power shots but the youthful Franklin pulled away in the second half of the fight as Booker tired and Franklin targeted the body. Franklin averaged 54 punches per round to Booker’s 35 and led 146-94 in overall punches landed.
“I think I had a decent performance,” said the Saginaw, mig. nativ. “There’s some stuff I could work on. I over-crowded myself a little bit and I was a little over-anxious. He had a lot more experience than me and used it to his advantage. He could see what I was doing.
“I learned to stay more patient because I had him hurt a few times, but once I got over-anxious, my whole game plan went out the window. I started messing up and making crazy mistakes I shouldn’t have. Now it’s back to the drawing board to work on my mistakes and come out bigger and badder next time.”
“I felt he out-hustled me, but it was a lot closer than how the judges scored it,” said Booker. “He was missing me a lot more than it looked. I slipped a lot of shots and hit him clean.
“I knew he would bring the pressure, but he needs a lot of work. He stays too centered with his head. He’s alright. What he has on his side is youth. I’d rate my performance about a seven. I had a training camp injury I was dealing with. I’m going to stay active and come back stronger than ever.”
I telecast-öppnaren, undefeated top-five ranked heavyweight prospect Otto Wallin (20-0, 13 Kos, 1 ND) and Baltimore’s Nick Kisner (21-4-1, 6 Kos, 1 ND) had their 10-round bout cut short when the two heavyweights clashed heads in the opening round. Wallin suffered a gash on the side of his head while Kisner suffered a cut over his right eye, hindering his ability to see. At the advice of the ringside physician in between rounds one and two, referee Earl Brown stopped the fight, resulting in a no-decision.

Hur upphetsad är du för att slåss i USA?
Christina Hammer: “Jag är verkligen upphetsad för det eftersom det här är en väldigt stor kamp. Jag kan inte vänta med att komma dit, kliva in i ringen och få en bra prestanda.”
Vad innebär denna kamp för dig?
CH: “Detta kommer att bli den största kvinnokampen i historien. Vi är båda mästare, hon har olympiska guldmedaljer och andra utmärkelser, så med allt detta kombinerat, det kommer att bli en spelbytare för vår sport.”
Vad behöver du göra för att vinna?
CH: “Jag är en lång tid mästare och jag vet vad jag ska göra i ringen. Jag vet att jag har färdigheterna att slå henne. Jag har bra fotarbete och mitt mål är att slå henne dåligt.”
Vad tycker du om Claressa inom och utanför ringen?
CH: “Claressa har uppenbarligen åstadkommit mycket tillbaka till OS. Detta är ett stort steg för henne och jag tror att det kommer att bli en utmaning för henne. Som person, hon är bara min motståndare, det är allt.”
Kan du beskriva din kampstil och vad fans kan förvänta sig i april 13?
CH: “Jag är lång för min uppdelning så jag använder min räckvidd. Jag har bra fotarbete och teknik och kraft och jag vill visa upp alla dessa färdigheter. Jag kommer att visa att Christina Hammer är en stor mästare. Jag gillar att spela med min motståndare, och när ögonblicket är rätt, Jag slog henne.”
Kan du prata om dina upplevelser som modemodell och varför det är viktigt för dig?
CH: “Jag gillar modellering eftersom det är en annan del av mig. Du kan vara mer feminin och atletisk. Jag gjorde mitt första skott för tre år sedan och jag hade aldrig gjort något liknande. Jag har arbetat med mina färdigheter också.
“Att vara modell är ett enkelt jobb, det ger mig bara förtroende. Att vara en fighter är svårt. Du måste ge allt, för i ringen kan du inte springa bort. Du måste slåss och besegra någon.”
Skulle du någonsin vilja tävla i en annan sport?
CH: “Jag vet inte. Boxning är den bästa idrotten för mig. Det är min passion. Jag ger allt till sporten och min dröm är nu att lyckas i Amerika.”
Finns det någon i boxningshistoriken som du skulle ha älskat att slåss mot?
CH: “Laila Ali var en stor mästare och om jag kämpade mot henne skulle det vara en stor kamp.”
Ser du kvinnors boxning som en sport ökar?
CH: “Ja, det har verkligen vuxit under de senaste åren. Det finns fler slagsmål på stora plattformar för oss och jag tror att detta är bara början.”
Skulle du rekommendera andra kvinnor att gå i boxning?

”Hammer har pratat smack men jag är inte orolig för henne. Jag är bara redo för en kamp. Hon talar om mycket saker som inte har något att göra med boxning. Jag väntar på att hon säger att hon kommer att slå mig med en överkutt eller något, men det är mer av samma sak.

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (April 3, 2019) – Oslagna stigande tungviktareJermaine Franklin och Otto Wallin kommer att leta efter att göra en stänk och tillkännage sig i tungviktdivisionen när de går in för separata lotter live på SHOWTIME lördag, April 13 från Boardwalk Hall i Atlantic City.

Franklin möter Rydell Booker medan Wallin tar på sig Nick Kisner i ett par 10-runda attraktioner som leder upp till huvudevenemanget. För både Franklin och Wallin, de ser april 13 som ett steg mot deras större mål.
“Booker är i vägen för där jag så småningom försöker vara,” Said Franklin. “Jag är en del av den nästa generationen tunga vikter och jag arbetar hårt för att hamna som tungviktmästaren när dammet sätter sig. Jag hittar alltid ett sätt att vinna och jag ska visa det 13 april.”
“Kommer till USA. för den andra delen av min karriär är mycket spännande,” sa Wallin. “Jag har åstadkommit mycket i min karriär i Europa men detta är en ny början. Det här är det ögonblick som jag har drömt om sedan jag först snörde vantar och jag kan inte vänta med att presentera mig för fansen här.”
En 25-åring från Saginaw, Michigan, Franklin hoppas kunna visa att han är grundad att bli den nästa amerikanska mäktaren i tungvikt, och är redo att ta manteln från den nuvarande WBC-titlisten Deontay Wilder och den långa raden av amerikanska tungviktmästare som kom före honom.
“Jag kommer att höja tävlingen bland tungviktarna,” Said Franklin. “Uppdelningen är definitivt tillbaka på kartan och jag planerar att ha en hand i att göra den måste-titta på TV igen. Amerika behöver ett annat ansikte i tungviktdivisionen och det kommer att bli jag.
“Jag tror redan att jag är världens bästa tungvikt. Det finns många stora, starka tungviktare, men jag är en balanserad idrottsman, vilket gör mig annorlunda. Jag är stark, snabb, atletisk och bli bättre med varje kamp.”
Även om hans hemland Sverige inte är känd för boxning, Wallins hemland har tidigare producerat en tungviktmästare i Ingemar Johansson, som berömt stoppade Floyd Patterson i deras första kamp på Yankee Stadium i 1959. Efter att ha besegrat den svenska svensk tungvikten Adrian Granat i sin sista kamp, Wallin beslutade att det var dags att slåss i USA, efter tidigare träningsläger i New York med tränaren Joey Gamache.
“Träning här i New York ger mig en stor energi och det visar i min prestanda,” sa Wallin. “Det är världens centrum, och medan jag är helt fokuserad på utbildning, Jag matar energi från staden.
“Ingemar Johansson är naturligtvis en stor inspiration för mig. När han kom till USA. och slog Floyd Patterson, han var den dåligaste mannen på planeten. Jag vill ta den manteln och bli en hjälte för unga svenska boxare, precis som han har varit för mig.”
Förutom att vara Wallins U.S.. debut, de obesegrade tungviktarna kommer att göra sina första uppträdanden på SHOWTIME och det kommer att vara Franklins första gången slåss i nordost. De hoppas var och en att visa upp sina respektive talanger och är beredda på vad som kommer med den ökade plattformen.
“Det här är en stor chans för mig att visa upp mina färdigheter, men jag behandlar det fortfarande som en enda kamp,” Said Franklin. “Jag kommer att anpassa mig till min motståndare och avslöja hans svagheter. Jag förbättrar mig alltid för att när du tror att du vet allt, det är när du vet att du vet ingenting.”
“Jag är bara ett barn från en liten stad i Sverige och jag har arbetat hårt för att komma till denna punkt,” sa Wallin. “Träning här i USA. och kämpar här kommer att hjälpa mig att få den bästa prestationen i min karriär. Rolan börjar i april 13 och jag slutar inte förrän jag är mästare.”
Båda undertecknade nyligen med Dmitriy Salitas Salita-kampanjer och i april 13 kommer att inleda ett år som kan lämna varje kämpe på botten av ett titelskott.
“På April 13 två av världens bästa tungvikt, en från USA, en från Sverige, kommer båda att ha en chans att göra anspråk på att de är redo att utmana för tungviktstiteln,” Said Word.

Lion, (16-0, 8 Kos), who started boxing at the age of eight, has dreams of emulating his biggest boxing inspiration, Roberto Duran, by one day becoming a world champion. He draws inspiration not only from Duran’s aggressiveness in the ring, but also from his tactical fighting style. The 24-year-old from Albuquerque, N.M. has sparred with elite boxers such as Leo Santa Cruz, Jessie Magdaleno, Nonito Donaire, and Tomoki Kameda and assures he is more than prepared to withstand Tabanao on April 5.
Tabanao, 25, made his pro debut in 2012 in his home country of the Philippines. He will make his television debut this week as he looks to move up the super bantamweight ranks. Tabanao won the WBO Oriental Featherweight Title in 2016 with a third-round technical knockout of Ibrahim Balla to then lose it to former 122-pound world champion Issac Dogboe. He suffered two consecutive defeats after losing to Dogboe but has admirably rebounded by winning his last four bouts.

On what they know about their opponent:
Lion:“Tabanao is definitely not a pushover. Han har 17 segrar och 11 of those by knockout, so we definitely know that he can punch. I’ve seen a video of him, he likes to counter off the high guard. He’s fought a former world champion, Isaac Dogboe, and went the distance with him. Så, he is a tough competitor for sure, but I think with my boxing and ring IQ, I can get the victory.”
Tabanao:“Angelo Leo is a good fighter. We need to use a good strategy to win this fight—and we have it. We trained very hard targeting his weaknesses. He’s in for a surprise this Friday.”
On what a win from this fight will do for their career:
Lion:“A win over Neil Tabanao will probably set me up for another 10-round fight and after that I will hopefully be competing on a world title eliminator. I think in the next two or three fights I’ll get a world title shot.”
Tabanao: “I want to be recognized in the world of boxing. Leo is a step towards that goal. He doesn’t know what he’s in for.”

Lion:“I had a very good training camp. I have a very good team. Min pappa, is my head trainer, he is the one in charge. Luis Chavez is my other trainer. He lives in New Mexico trainer and comes down when I fight. Steve Cartledge and John Sinclair are helping me with my strength and conditioning. We started increasing the rounds in my sparring and we are trying to get the conditioning up as well. I have been training super hard for this fight. I feel that I’m in tip-top shape.”
Tabanao: “I had a good training camp. I trained with my coach Sonny Dollente at Mabuhay Boxing Camp at Dujali Davao del Norte in The Philippines. We worked hard on perfecting our strategy; we are ready to counter whatever Leo may do on Friday night.”
How does it feel to fight on national television?
Lion:“It feels like a dream come true to fight on national television. I’ve been working so hard for this moment. Slutligen, I get to show everybody who I am and what better way to do it than as the main event on TV. I’m going to take full advantage of this opportunity. Everyone will see what I’m all about.”
Tabanao:“It means a lot to me to be able to fight on national television. I hope this is the first of many televised fights. I want to become a renowned and successful boxer to be able help my family. I’m determined to do it.”

The 28-year-old Easter (21-1, 14 Kos) won the IBF Lightweight Championship in 2016 by edging an exciting split-decision against then-unbeaten and current IBF titleholder Richard Commey. After two successful title defenses in his hometown of Toledo, Ohio, Easter defeated former champion Javier Fortuna by decision in a January 2018 fight in SHOWTIME.
That victory set up a unification with WBC champion Mikey Garcia, in which Easter survived an early knockdown to push Garcia the full 12 rounds before coming up short on the scorecards. At 5-foot-11, Easter has continued to show the combination of size, skill and athleticism that made him a highly regarded prospect following an amateur career that featured a spot as an alternate on the 2012 US. Olympic team.
“I’ve wanted to fight Barthelemy since he had the lightweight title and vacated it, and now I have the chance,” said Easter. “He has an awkward style and I’m up for that challenge. I am still coming in as the taller fighter with a reach advantage and I’ll use it to make this fight go how I want it to. He is a former world champion and he is coming to bring it just like I am.”
A decorated Cuban amateur who hails from a boxing family that includes his older brother, Olympic Gold Medalist Yan, and younger brother, unbeaten featherweight Leduan, Rances Barthelemy (27-1, 14 Kos) will return to lightweight to vie against one of the best fighters in the division. The 32-year-old now trains in Las Vegas and previously captured a 135-pound belt by defeating Denis Shafikov in December 2015.
Barthelemy won a 130-pound championship by defeating Argenis Mendez in 2014 and attempted to become the first Cuban three-division champion when he moved up to 140-pounds for his first fight against Relikh, a title eliminator that he won by decision. The 35-year-old dropped the title in a unification showdown with Terence Crawford in 2016 before bouncing back by defeating then unbeaten Jamshidbek Najmiddinov. Last June he dropped a decision to unbeaten contender Josh Taylor and most recently he defeated Siar Ozgul in November.
