THIRD-ROUND RESULTS: 72nd annual Lowell Sun Charities Golden Gloves Championships

Central N.E. semifinals round action
this Thursday night at Lowell Auditorium
LOWELL, Mass. (January 20, 2018) – The 72nd annual Lowell Sun Charities Golden Gloves Championships continued last night with Central New England (Greater Lowell) novice and open class action at historic Lowell Memorial Auditorium.
Novice quarterfinals and semifinals matches were held last night, as well as preliminary bouts in the open division. The female championship bout in the middleweight class was also held last night, in which Amesbury’s (MA) Jessica McFadden edged Brookline’s Samantha Surface, 3-2.
The Fight of the Night was an open-class welterweight showdown between Salem’s (MA) Charlie Espinal and Amesbury’s Kenny Lawson, which Espinal won by a score of 5-0.
“It was a good night,” New England Golden Gloves Executive Director Bobby Russo said. “Good weather helped draw a big crowd, the largest of the season so far. There were a lot of good matches, some open division to go along with the novices. The Espinal-Larson match was the best of the night, a war from start to finish. It was the type fight you didn’t want either fighter to lose. Espinal had a little better boxing and experience that carried him to victory.”
The action switches to Thursday evening (Jan. 19) next week at Lowell Memorial Auditorium with more novice and open class matches. See the complete 2018 schedule of events below as well as last night’s complete results.
Season tickets for the remaining seven events are still available and reasonably priced at $75.00 (general admission). To purchase call the Lowell Memorial Auditorium box office at 1.866.722.8881 or order online at www.lowellauditorium.com. LOWELL, Mass. (January 13, 2018) – The Central New England (Greater Lowell) second-round of the 72nd annual Lowell Sun Charities Golden Gloves Championships concluded last night at historic Lowell Memorial Auditorium with that featured 13 exciting men’s and women’s novice class matches.
The quarterfinals are on tap next Friday night (Jan. 19) at Lowell Memorial Auditorium with novice and open class matches. See the complete 2018 schedule of events below as well as last night’s complete results.
“The first bout (Rodriguez vs. Picariello) of the night was awesome, one of the best I’ve seen in years,” Tournament Executive Director Bobby Russo said. “It was a lesson to be learned for fans: don’t come late! One of the great things about amateur boxing is you never know what the fight of the night will be and last night it was the first.  Rodriguez showed a good skill level, especially for a novice, and Picariello had tremendous determination. He kept coming and they both threw a lot of punches. It was a great way to start the show.”
Season tickets for the remaining seven events are still available and reasonably priced at $75.00 (general admission). 2017 National Golden Gloves champion Poindexter Knight, Jr. wins his Pro debut

New York (December, 11, 2017)–On December 1st, welterweight prospect Poindexter Knight, Jr. won his anticipated professional debut when he stopped Samuel Forjoe in the first round of their scheduled four-round bout at The Strand Ballroom and Theater in Providence, Rhode Island.
The 2017 National Golden Gloves champion out of Philadelphia landed a hard combination the corner that had Forjoe bending over, and the bout was stopped in just 63 seconds.
Knight is the latest top-prospect to debut for Split-T Management, and he is promoted by Evander Holyfield’s Sports and Entertainment.
“Everything went well, I was excited and nervous, but I got through it,”said Knight.
“I thought my opponent would have a little more for me, but I did what I had to do in there and I got him out of there.  It was great to get the knockout in my pro debut,” continued Knight.
Knight is eager to get his next victory, and he is looking to do in front of his hometown fans.
“I am hoping to fight in front of my hometown fans in 2018.  That would be a goal for the upcoming year.  I can’t wait as I am coming strong in 2018.”
Knight is trained by his father Poindexter Knight, Sr, and the elder Knight was happy with his son’s performance.
“Poindexter looked relaxed, and it looked like it was his 10th fight.  I am happy to be with Split-T Management.  They gave us a chance when no one else did.  We wanted to turn pro for a while and a lot of managers made a lot of broken promises.  I put Poindexter back in the Golden Gloves, and he won, which opened a lot of doors,” Said Poindexter Knight, Sr.
“Like my son said, I would like to see him get at least five fights for 2018.  That will keep him sharp, and he will continue to learn.  We had a great 1st fight, and we will continue to work hard and get better with each fight.”
Said David McWater, CEO of Split-T management, “I’m truly excited about Poindexter Knight’s future – he has the skill and more importantly the drive to be one of the very best.”

LOWELL, Mass. (March 3, 2017) – Western New England won its fourth consecutive New England Tournament of Champions open class team title last night in the grand finale of the 71st annual Lowell Sun Charities Golden Gloves Championship, at historic Lowell Memorial Auditorium.
Western NE had seven individual winners to earn the Bill Hoar Memorial Award as the Most Outstanding Team.  Northern New England finished second with three individual winners and Central New England had two.
“Once again,” New England Golden Gloves Executive Director Bobby Russo said, “it was a great tournament with so many good, competitive matches.  We had the biggest crowd of the season turnout for the finals.  The draw was done by computer, so the marches were nice and fair.  I really liked the way these boxers were matched. The fans here in Lowell have been appreciated for a long time watching good fights and we plan to keep that rich tradition going.”
Western New England bantamweight Nathan Martinez, who defeated Joseph Valdez on points last night, was named the recipient of the Thomas Costello Memorial Award as the Most Outstanding Boxer.
Norther New England lightweight Liz Leddy won her sixth All-New England title with a close points win over Kelsay Kaiser, while three-time National Golden Gloves champion Rashidi Ellis (Central New England), who is the No. 2 rated lightweight in the United States, took a decision against defending N.E. champion Lyndsay Kyajohnian.
Western New England light heavyweight Elivis Figueroa captured his third All-New England crown.  His teammate, Hampton Miller (pictured below), stopped Sean Gabriel in the second round to win the Rocky Marciano Memorial Award as the Most Outstanding Heavyweight Boxer.
Last night’s open-class winners qualified to be members of Team New England at the National Golden Gloves Championships for men in Lafayette, Louisiana (May) and women in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida (July).
.
“New England will be sending a strong team to the National Golden Gloves,” Russo added.  “We may only have three female boxers going to The Nationals, but each one of them have won national tournaments.  Anyone of the male boxers on Team New England could win at The Nationals.  I think Elvis (Figueroa), Yarmarco (Guzman) and Josniel (Castro).  I will offer the Team New England head coaching position to Luis Rosa from the winning Western New England team. We’ll also be brining Carlos Garcia (veteran coach from Worcester), who will be inducted into the National Golden Gloves Hall of Fame.)
Proceeds from the Lowell Sun Charities Golden Gloves Championship went towards sending the New England Golden Gloves champions to the National Golden Gloves Championship, in addition to supporting local athletes and area gyms, the Boys & Girls Club, soup kitchens, homeless shelters, cancer funds, scholarships and many other great charitable causes.
