BETHLEHEM, PA. (Jen 29, 2016) – Former title challenger Edner Cherry (35-7-2, 19 Ko) defeated contender LYDELL Rhodes (23-2-1, 11 Ko) pa desizyon inanim (98-92, 97-93 X 2) in a 10-round super featherweight main event of Premier boksè chanpyon MADI zòtèy-a-zòtèy sou FS1 ak Bòks chanpyon from Sands Bethlehem Events Center in Bethlehem, PA.
Cherry, a Wauchula, Fla. who trains out of St. Pete Boxing Club with welterweight champion Keith Thurman, got off to an early lead in the second round, landing a left that stumbled Rhodes briefly.
A former football standout and wrestler in high school, who has competed in both boxing and mixed martial arts professionally, Oklahoma City’s Rhodes made the fight physical and ugly early.
Rhodes said, “He held and a lot which made it tough to get in a rhythm.”
“He was slick,” answered Cherry. “So I held because I didn’t want him to get in those quick shots.”
A sloppy round five saw both fighters slip to the canvas, but neither was ruled a knockdown. What became a wrestling match continued rounds six through 10, with clinching and grappling throughout.
Moments before the final bell, Cherry stunned Rhodes, cementing what would become his unanimous victory.
Cherry said, “I thought it was a great fight. I was in a tough fight aswè a and I am glad to come out with the victory.”
A discontented Rhodes expressed, “It was a heck of a fight. I wanted to back him up in the later rounds but he was strong. It was an ugly fight, but I believe I won. Mwen pa dakò ak desizyon an. Nothing more, nothing less.”
Cherry concluded, “Training and sparring with Keith (Thurman) was great. He’s so strong and it helped me in this fight. We were both training for big fights at the same time and it helped me increase my strength and pick up this win aswè a, without a doubt.”
Televised coverage kicked off with unbeaten Oma “Super O” Douglas (17-0, 12 Ko) stopping Cuban Alexei “The Hurricane” Collado (19-2, 17 Ko) in the seventh round of their scheduled 10-round super featherweight bout.
A fast-rising star out of Wilmington, Delaware, Douglas jumped out to an early lead, controlling the action in the first frame. Douglas continued moving Collado around the ring in round two, forcing a frustrated Collado to clinch, which resulted in both fighters awkwardly stumbling to the canvas.
The Miami native Collado came out aggressive in rounds three and four, outworking Douglas and winning him the pair of rounds on all three judges’ performance.
Sepandan, Douglas settled in throughout rounds five and six. His jabs to the body proving an effective deterrent to Collado’s aggression and furious pace he displayed in the earlier rounds.
The end came in the seventh round as Douglas landed a left hook to Collado’s head that stumbled Collado, forcing him to take a knee and never get back up.
“I noticed that he has his head in the middle and that is unusual for a tall guy,” said Douglas. “So I was focusing on the right hand up the middle. I was able to finish him with a hard right, kite, right combination.”
Collado acknowledged, “He hit me with a good left hook and that broke my nose. I feel it was a close fight though, and I was in the fight up until he got me, but he is a good fighter.”
Douglas agreed with Collado’s assessment of the competition adding, “Se te yon batay difisil, but I had a great camp and that showed aswè a. I think I need one or two more of these kinds of fights and I will be ready for a title shot.”

SAN ANTONIO (Me 29, 2016) – Ansyen chanpyon nan lemonn Miguel “Titere” Vazquez (36-5, 13 Ko) defeated Ecuador’s Erick Zo (16-4, 8 Ko) in a 10-round battle that headlined Premier boksè chanpyon sou FS1 ak FOX Espò Samdi night from the Dancehall in San Antonio.
The former champion from Mexico worked behind a strong jab and brought the fight to Bone throughout the main event. Bone was able to return fire and was effective at times when countering.
The jab of Vazquez eventually led to success with the right hand that was able to hurt his opponent and keep the battle-tested Bone from building momentum.
Both fighters landed at a nearly identical rate as Vazquez connected on 22 percent of his punches while Bone landed 21 pousan. Sepandan, it was Vazquez with the advantage in punches landed at 94 to 74.
The fight featured many close rounds, which was reflected by the varied scores of the judges. Nan fen a, all three had the fight for Vazquez by scores of 99-91, 97-93 ak 96-94.
Nan evènman an ko-prensipal, rising featherweight Miguel Flores (20-0, 9 Ko) kept his record perfect as he defeated Mexican veteran Woubenn Tamayo (26-9-4, 18 Ko) in their 10-round bout.
Facing a southpaw for the first time as a professional, Flores had some trouble early with the game Tamayo who was able to penetrate the defense of the 23-year-old with left hands while also opening a cut with an accidental head butt in round two.
As the fight went on Flores showed improved movement and a variety of effective punches that allowed him to take control of the fight. Most notably, Flores used a bruising left hook to the body that left Tamayo marked up and slowed down his offense.
Both fighters threw over 550 punches but it was Flores who out landed his opponent 175-121. The judges rewarded the still undefeated fighter with the unanimous decision by scores of 100-90 ak 98-92 de fwa.

“I wanted to throw the heavier punches because I thought I could win by knockout, but that didn’t happen. There was an overhand right in the eighth round that I thought hurt him badly.
“He was an elusive fighter and survived, so there are still things that I have to work on.
“There was some difficulty adjusting to the late opponent switch, but overall, pa gen okenn pwoblèm. I had been sparring southpaws as well as right-handers.
“If I could have followed up on some of the hooks and overhand rights, I could have gotten him out of there.
“I’ve always wanted to fight Adrien Broner. I want to make that.”

“Vazquez was awkward and hard to fight. I gave it my all in there.
“I’m thankful for the opportunity and I’m looking forward to getting back in the gym and working on some things before I return to the ring.”

The co-main event of the night saw local favorite Joey “Minnesota Ice” ABELL (32-9, 30 Ko) deliver a dominant performance in knocking out previously unbeaten Wes Nofire (19-1, 15 Ko) in their heavyweight showdown.
The former title challenger bothered Nofire early and often from his southpaw stance and was successful with his left hand throughout the fight. Abell snuck in a strong right hook in round two that stunned Nofire before he delivered multiple left hooks to score the early knockdown.
Nofire tried to weather the storm but a big right hand from Abell again put Nofire down early in the third round. Nofire almost made it out of the round but Abell’s power in the left hand proved to be too much as a series of strong shots sent Nofire down for the final time before his corner stopped the fight.
Abell could hardly miss as he connected on 42 percent of his punches on his way to the stoppage at 2:12 nan wonn nan twazyèm.

Shaw controlled the action with superior boxing skills and strong combinations throughout the fight. Kelly had some success targeting the body of Shaw but was unable to maintain a consistently effective attack.
The punch stats were in line with the judges’ scores of 60-54 as Shaw out landed Kelly 95 to 56 while connecting at 34 percent mark to Kelly’s 23 pousan.
